Remember: your shield's impact resistance needs to be greater than your opponent weapon's impact power to interrupt their attack combo! Heater has a IR of 5, while the longsword has an IP of 4 -- this is why you see me choose the heater over other shields most of the time!!
Incorrect. the riposte on the longsword has an impact power of 2... it can be blocked by any shield. you can block it with another longsword. or any other blocking weapon.
@@YourBoyBlinn Longsword is a pretty easy weapon to fight against once you know the player type. There are three types of longsword players. Parry gremlins who just hold the right mouse and get hit. If you're fighting one of those, they probably came from a longsword parry montage video and just picked up the weapon or are someone just messing around. Easily countered by getting in close and aiming for their legs, specifically their left leg, as its the most exposed. The next type is also someone who came from a longsword is OP video, but made by someone like Dimo who claims the left click is a viable attack method and is just trying out the weapon. They won't try to right-click and will try a dps trade. Unless they severely outgear you, you can just keep holding down left click as well with either a falchion or arming sword, and you will out damage them without needing to block. I do suggest trying to block the thrust as you close in, but it's not needed most of the time. The third type of longsword player is the hardest to beat in melee. These are the ones that properly make use of the weapons' reach on the thrust attack and space you out so they stay out of range of your attacks, the best way to fight them is to play around a doorway or other area that forces close quarters pvp. And of course. The best option against any longsword player is to use your bow or crossbow because you really cant block projectiles reliably with longsword at all.

No pots and you can only use your cooldowns. Usually in the >125 lobby to keep things more variable then squire gear lobby :D
@@TheDreamOfChaos definitely sounds like fun, but I do feel that duels like that are not indicative of full-on organic combat in the dungeon, where the element of surprise and reaction time play a bigger role. every time I've asked a friend or a random to have a duel, it's always felt a little different than the un-orchestrated combat that happens during raids. but still for sure fun to mess with!
Hey! Ex Ranger main here. Played the last 2 wipes only on Ranger. It’s been a blast getting into the sword and shield combat! I’m loving the parry long sword, and the lantern shield.

thanks for your note! eventually I will reach the bottom of my deep dive into shield tech, and by then will prolly have a decent head start on the longsword :) good luck in your adventures brother!
I love this so much because it's basically the same principles as reality (see HEMA). While the combat isn't at all like reality, the principles of each weapons are the same, love it.
Specifically the shield getting in closer to minimize angles of the longsword. Only difference, is in unarmored combat, one mistake getting in close means you lose, in DAD, you can take a hit to the leg without a problem :P But overall, speed, range, movesets makes sense.
Personally I have found aiming with the first attack of the morningstar at the head first and then dragging aggressively to the left away has been very successful.
Falchion is very effective against long sword if you do 1, 1-2 combos and let the step in of the backhand be the drag. It feels like when I used to sword and board at Ragnarok or Armageddon back in the day.
This is a great guide, but as a longsword user I’d say you missed out on the most important factor which is accelerating your weapon. Any weapon with a downswing can go completely through a sword with fast enough acceleration. That and lots of attack hitboxes spawn much farther ahead of what appears in game, meaning if you hug a longsworder enough any weapon with a stab or others will spawn behind the longsword hitbox, completely nullifying it. The crystal swords second swing is a great example as it applies to both cases here. None the less great guide as always my man Oh and it feels cool so that’s a nice too
ahhh is that why I see some high-level longsword fighters do really fast 180 degree spins for thrust attacks? does a fast spin lie that count as a weapon acceleration (making it harder. if not impossible to block?)? in any case, appreciate the additional info here my guy!!
@@YourBoyBlinn somewhat yeah, I’m a known spin enjoyer(gotten me killed a few times cause I do it too much lmao). The spin helps with a few things, acceleration is a big one of course, but overhead attacks are much better for acceleration and it’s still very possible to get blocked trying to accelerate a thrust or side swipe, so it can help but it’s not a catch all solution. A spin also turns the thrust into a makeshift “side swipe” as ur hitbox stays in front of you as you spin, meaning you can hit multiple targets. A simple drag can also achieve this tho. Against other longsworders the spin helps prevent ur opponent from tracking ur thrust, helping prevent a parry, the same can work against shields as well to help prevent a block. And finally most importantly it’s kinda of similar to how you’ll will see players begin their attack BEFORE they turn around to engage with you, it hides the startup of the attack. The longsword thrust has a very very long startup, so spinning helps hide the start up, theoretically I should jump spinning into a fight so that by the time I’m in melee range my thrust has already begun and has an active hitbox. So it’s kind of a combination of all those factors, and IK it’s considered a longsword thing but any weapon with a thrust or long start up can definitely benifit as well from the technique.(or really any weapon for that matter if used well). Sorry for the paragraph, but I hope that helps!
Have you had any success with the Magic Reflect ability on shield fighter? I've been trying out out but im not sure what exactly counts as a "magic projectile" and seems like warlocks and wizards will just shoot your legs. Perfect block may still be the better replacement for second wind.
I'm still running Sprint & Perfect Block :) the spell reflect skill is only for magic projectiles (e.g. fireball, ice bolt, magic middle, bolt of darkness, etc) and does nothing versus hitscan magic (e.g. zap, curse) or AoE magic (e.g. lightning strike, holy strike, etc). plus the duration is super suuper short. just not worth it at the moment!
Any tips for replicating this on barbarian? They can only use the round shield which has an impact resistance of 4, it seems having 5 resistance is integral to this strat working
I've tried to get some kind of shield barbarian to work, but I struggle with it.. the round shield is the game's worst shield and it's difficult to make it effective without the blocking-focused fighter perks. I think the play for Barb vs longsword is to try and use attack drags on your 2-hander to get around the parry! try attacking wide to start and dragging with the bardiche etc. :)
@@YourBoyBlinn I see. I’m a warlock that’s pretty bad but I run the Heater faction and I swear I get head shot with a long sword so often. This was helpful thanks!
Best way to kill longswords is to face stuff them while blocking which makes it pretty much impossible for them to hit you with the poke, the just smack once and block again, stay hugging them and always try to keep them on the 1st attack and not let them get 2nd or 3rd attack since theyre hoarder to block
for mace combat I would focus on Dex primarily. the faster you can swing that thing, the more savage it is! also if you're planning on playing in solo, you can't sleep in the Agi!! Good luck & let me know how it goes for ya!
and for drags to your right (the opponents right your left) look up and right whilst walking into them shield shenanigans work for you too since you just wanna ram your hitbox into theirs if its to your body just look right guess the position youll have to block in before the opponent even knows with server latency cant chance it either commit or die you gotta imagine your the dude swinging make an opening for them then close it last second to convince them into feeding you parries
i notice you get really close a lot of the time during fights, this also puts you at slight disadvantage no? considering the partial hits with the shaft of the mace
only almost one hits if you're a low hp/pdr class got two body hits and a riposte headshot against a barb once and he still didnt go down, in a 124 lobby
@@YourBoyBlinn is actually worst, since the desync can be overcome by predictions but in a model blocking mechanic is impossible to know where the enemy sword is, imo a timed parrying with cooldown and CD reset on block like in mordhau the melee gameplay will totally evolve a lot
