Casio MDV106 “Duro” Diver Watch In Depth Review

- This is a review of the Casio MDV106-1AVTN "Duro" watch with its 200 Meter water resistance and classic Diver Watch style. Casio offers the Duro (or "Marlin") watch in multiple color schemes. This is one of several watches on the market from several manufacturers which emulate the general style of diver’s watches like the Rolex Submariner. This one offers 200 meters of water resistance, a 120-position (unidirectional) rotating bezel, a date window at the 3 o’clock position and quartz accuracy to within 20 seconds per month. It has a screw-on back, an all-metal case and a screw down crown to help achieve that 200-meter water resistance. The watch battery should last about three years until it will have to be replaced. This watch uses Casio’s module 2784.
Although this watch is not considered a serious substitute for something like a Rolex or other high-end diver’s watches it still looks great, feels solid, keeps the time well and costs less than a couple tanks of gas (while a Rolex can cost as much as a used car). Plus, it's popular among those who want to do custom modifications of their watches. Some folks want to change out the bezel or even go further, like changing out the hands or the crystal. But if all you really want to do is swap out the standard, resin watch band for something else then it's very easy to do that too. - Наука та технологія
I now own 3 Duros-the original black model with the red second hand, along with the black-and-gold and blue-dialed variants..they’re great additions to my collection, which now consists mainly of Casio watches..
Thanks Greg,
I just bought the MRW 210h 7AV and the MRW 200 from one of your other videos. I had a Rolex, my Casio is a better watch! Better time keeping and more rugged. I had to change the mainspring on my Rolex TWICE. If you want to impress your friends buy a Rolex, if you want a great watch buy Casio! I have five Casio watches now, not as many as you but I'm not done yet either!
Very nice review! :)
I'll add some info about the movement. Yes it is japanese. The indication 2784 is the catalogue number in Casio. But it comes from Citizen. The model is Miyota 2115 (very accurate and reliable Citizen's movement) with battery type SR626SW.
It’s great to have you back
But it’s even greater to see you enjoying being back
EXCELLENT presentation my friend!!!
That’s crazy! The seconds hand even hits the tick marks! Is this the one that Alessandro at TheSlenderWrist talked about? Very nice looking.
Oh yeah, great review. Always love your style!
Thank you very much this helped a lot to wind it. Great review!
Love your videos! You and your WM deals, lucky!
I put my Duro on the Casio steel band... Looks great. Wal-Mart here in Tennessee does not have a Casio display with discounted watches. The are saying at $52.99 I finally found one for $45.00 online and I'm a happy camper.
$45 is still a good value. I got lucky getting the black Duro for just $13 and change but I had to pay about $55 for the blue one. I’m still happy to have them.
Can't beat a casio. My fave watch brand. My school watch was a TS-100. Still got it 30 years later. As always looking forward to your next vid 👍
Picked up my second today from Walmart for $11.48. Blue Version. I typically don't go for blue watches but this is a nice shade. Great video Greg!
Love your style. To the point and sober.
I bought one of these about 3 years ago for 45 bucks. I can't imagine you'd find a better watch for that price but it's just a tad too big for me. I wore it a lot when I first got it, trying to get used to the size, but it just never felt quite right. I really, really wish they would make a 42mm version because that's about as big as I'm willing to wear on my 6.75" wrist.
Good Morning Mr Greg,
For some reason the only Walmarts here in Massachusetts that have watched on clearance its the ones that have a jewelry counter. All other have the watches at regular price. Perhaps Walmart might get rid of her jewelry counter in the future. But before that happens I'll keep on searching. Haha!
I bought this exact watch yesterday (May 10, 2021) for $5.00 at WalMart. The sticker on the box has a date of July 5, 2016, so it looks like it was in the store for almost five years. I was hoping to find another discounted Casio after snagging a G-Shock for $25.00 recently. Perfect watch besides the dead battery but that's OK.
I put more in to mods on my Duro than it’s cost. I bought some NATO straps and a couple of solid link bracelets. I just recently bought a Citizen Promaster quartz diver and I feel like my Duro is going to get jealous. I still want to add a sapphire crystal to the Duro (see Just One More Watch’s channel), but I still plan to wear it occasionally. I’m thinking of getting a nice steel bracelet for my Citizen. The Duro started me on the course of delving into dive watches.
I have gotten several good deals on Casio at Walmart recently. I asked the jewelry counter employee and was told at 2 separate stores that they were going to eliminate their jewelry counters at Walmart. In the future they will only carry the low end (f-91w, etc) on open displays. I've been trolling the local stores and picked up several watches in the $40-90 range for $10 and in the $20 range for $5. You can't even buy replacement batteries for this price! Good hunting guys!
Wal-mart was downsizing their jewelry counter & I got the newer black & gold version on clearance for $10! My best score yet.
Nice! Mine had one yesterday for $15 😊
Great watch at an even greater deal!
Thank you for your genuine reviews. I find them entertaining and a breathe of fresh air compared to other watch reviewers out there. Would you be interested in producing a review of another Casio that I could lend to you?
I suppose I could consider that. Maybe it’s one I’d want to buy for myself. Which model of watch is it?
Thirteen bucks? Wow, amazing price for a really great watch. I love these watches. In the process of collecting all the colour variations.
Duro is amazing. Too bad Casio don't make something exactly like that in the 38-40mm case size mark.
Good watches, they suit a larger wrist. I bought one a couple of years ago in the UK for £36 and sold it on for £45. As far as I know, they are ISO certified for diving. To get it for under $14 is amazing. The only thing I did not like was the clarity of the mineral crystal, it almost seemed misty. The lume was fairly poor, too. Good review. If Bill Gates thinks they are OK, well that’s fine by me. Re modding, you can fill it with mineral oil and it’ll go down 1000m plus.
They're about double that price now.
great watch and the second hand lines up perfectly from what i can see!
Yes, it seems to be a very well-engineered movement.
I have 7 of them....ALL hit the marks !
Great review! Subscribed for more.
Got myself a Duro for Christmas. Couldn't be happier.
By the way. Was that North Star diver styled watch from mid 70's a quartz or an automatic?
Thanks
That North Star watch is an old-style wind-up watch where you have to turn the crown. So it’s not even automatic.
Your Walmarts have all kinds of good deals that I never see in my area, lol.....very fortunate!!
I have had mine for 5 years. I replaced the crystal in South East Asia for 5 bucks. I get eyeballs on it and compliments quite often. I wouldn't change a thing.
The only $13.00 deal I found was an Armitron Horizon. It’s a knock off of G Shock but I like it. Would love t find a deal on the Duro like you did.
You are zo Lucky! If this watch is obtainable at all in Europe, it will cost you about 75 euros! (Amazon Germany price)
I think it wasn't meant to be sold here. That's too bad, it's a great, practical watch.
Nice to have another video from your channel Greg!
Man, you guys in Europe pay so much compared to the rest of the world!
Unfortunately the Duro was made for the American market, it's hard to get and expensive in Europe. Also, 13 bucks? That's almost criminal.
When they told me it was really just $13.49 I decided not to argue.
in the European market the alternative to the mdv106 is the mtd1053. it's not as good looking but it is a little smaller and it has 200m WR while still being affordable..
Also hard to buy in Asia. Seems odd because other dive watches are fairly popular
I have several Casio watches in my collection and I enjoy every one of them. Great price for the watch!
I’ve ordered one with the intention on changing the glass to sapphire and replacing the strap with a titanium bracelet
Just picked one up today at my local Walmart for 11 bucks! Also picked up a trek for under 20. Appears they are unloading their Casio watches.
Nice watch
Crap just for the shortened stem-tube threading, it will wear out the crown threading and fail in time, plus it's not going to seal because it can't compress against the crown's own seal.
Duro's are great beater watches. Put one on and never need to take it off.
I gave it a Thumbs Up.
August 2020 on Amazon UK, these are going for over 108 pounds!!!!
The Marlin only appears on 200 meter certified Casio dive watches,Nick Shabazz reviewed this watch some time ago and was critical of this feature, probably because he didn't know that.I have this model and it is the only watch to get noticed on my wrist (my son admired it) ever........................
Is Nick Shabazz that dude with the stong New Jersey accent? He sounds like a mobster lol
@@NathanChisholm041 No,not a gangster,Moe in "The Simpsons."
Question: Normally in setting time we’d advance the time to between 3 and 9, move the day and date to the day before, and then advance the time past midnite to gett to the correct time on the correct day. Do these casios not like that?
The manual only says to avoid setting the date between 8:00 PM and 2:00 AM because it may not advance correctly. Otherwise, I think it’s okay to set the time and then adjust the date with the crown in it’s first outward position.
I’m having an issue with the date on both of my Duro’s. I set the date to current day and it ends up switching the day at noon instead of midnight. I’m also not setting the time or date between 8p-2a....help!
@@justadudeintheworldman.120 advancing your watch 12 hours will solve the problem.
i am curious if you can convert a battery operated clock to wind up that has chimes
I haven’t done anything like that before. I suppose you could check for parts at Klockit.com or someplace like that.
Duh?
i filled it up with oil and it looks awesome and they tested a cheap pulsar diver oil filled 1.5 km deep haha i think the duro can do that to !!
I remember diver style watches being quite popular in the mid-Seventies. My girlfriend bought me one. Was the popularity the same in your area?
Yes. Before companies like Texas Instruments started selling really cheap digital watches it seemed all the guys in my school wanted “waterproof” diver style watches. But, then, Star Wars was all the rage at about the same time digital watches became very affordable.
@@GoodTimekeeper This was about '74. For some reason everyone was wearing divers.
@@GoodTimekeeper Just got a Duro. Had a bit of trouble getting the screw down crown to re-engage after setting the time and date. Is this common in your opinion?
I haven’t had a problem with the screw down crowns on any of my watches. Maybe it just takes a certain touch and, once you get it, it’s not so bad.
Cool

Here in the UK Casio watch choice is not great. This watch Greg is reviewing is not available as are a few others. I wish we had a Walmart style shop here
David Myers I get that you can’t get this directly in the UK, but there are thousands of different Casio’s available in the UK.
What an opportunity for you. Open one.
You are so lucky to be able to buy watches for cheaper in the USA than we can in Europe.
You pay VAT, when you subtract that your prices are much closer.
Love my Duro. Only wish the battery lasted longer. I get only about 18 months with a quality battery.
Why do people call the Duro "marlin"? That's obviously not a Marlin. It's a sailfish. The Marlin's dorsal fin peaks just above its head and tapers down drastically from there. The sailfish is what's portrayed on the front and back of the Duro. Don't take my word for it, just search "marlin vs sailfish" and find out for yourself.
Casio have removed the marlin due to the trademark expiring!
Yes, I was watching another guy’s video in which he mentioned this. It’s a bit of a surprise that they couldn’t continue using the logo but I suppose that just makes our older Marlin watches more valuable somehow (so it’s an even better deal if you see one for $13 at Walmart). It would have been fun if they replaced the Marlin with some other animal but I guess they’re just leaving that part “blank” for now. Apparently the new MDV106 will be available with a half-blue and half-red bezel and there will be some collectors who’ll like that a lot.
When the Amazon restocked this watches i quickly grab one plus I'm curious about this watch and it's cheap you can buy this in other sources but it's higher price lol
👍👍👍👍
