When you find out most murder in the US is between family members, you realize that the purge wouldn't result in bands of strangers killing one another. It would be families taking the opportunity to off that brother or whatever they really hated. In which case these defenses wouldn't really help.
The reason for in family murders is easily explained though. They tend to happen in affection, meaning something made a family member snap and murder the other in the heat of the moment. They are after all living together most of the time. On a night where murders are LEGAL, this logic wouldn't apply. I also want to point out that most murders, sexual assaults and beatings happen between people that know each other. It's not just a family thing. That's what makes serial killers hard to catch, they don't tend to know their victims so there's no connections. And a few serial killers do it completely random, not connected to a local area or certain type of victim. Those are the ones that are the hardest to catch and some have gotten away with it.

No... I can almost guarantee you'd have LESS criminals, because many of the criminals are going to kill each other and many criminals are going to be killed by non-criminals. When I first heard the concept of the purge, I thought there would be much more shoplifting and robbing banks rather than murdering strangers for ‘stress relievers’. The more I looked into it I did suspect that people murdered strangers for overpopulation. Still, even when I thought about the murder I thought it would have been with abusive relatives or anything around that circle of reasons. Also how did the leader just shoot the stranger? Did he just get no recoil when he fired? Or is he just so tough that he doesn’t get affected by laws of physics? God I hate questions with no answers
It did seem like the next couple of movies and the show tried to make explanations for things after people kept poking holes into the premise. "Alternate universe where common sense doesn't exist" is pretty accurate.

To everyone who hasn't seen the movie: The real reason why The Purge became a thing was actually for population control, specifically to cut down the homeless and poverty rate. This movie isn't very good, obviously, but to be fair, it is for much better reasons than "letting out stress". Personally, I would have made this movie about a lower class family that can't just leave the country. I also would have made it so that most killing/robbing being done, was done by people the victims knew (since that's how it is in real life).
Still fucking stupid. Just add population control, like China did, and china didn't even need to enforce it, they just did it through the power of money and tax cuts.
I would've made this movie about how all the middle class families get together to tactically strategize how to maximize their financial situation on that day via insider trading tips and tax evasion schemes. Nobody would have locked anything down because they would have no motivation to murder each other because most people don't. And a few of them would be armed just to ensure they could repel anyone who would attack. Nobody would, of course, because predation isn't successful if you attack people who can easily end you, so it'd be largely uneventful. The sequel would involve a 19 year old that gets it on with his 15 year old girlfriend because statuatory laws wouldn't apply. Then they'd continue their committed relationship afterwards anyway, although the parents would disapprove, nobody would be murdered because again, most people don't want that on their consciences. These movies would be extremely celebrated obviously for how accurate they are.
You have a zillion dollars in home defenses but NO motion sensors? And NOT ONE active defense, not even so much as an electric fence? No mines? No turret on the roof? Whatever home defense company this guy works for, I could put them all out of business in an afternoon.
Don't forget, the doorframes/windows and the likings are not reinforced at all. You can 100% build something like that to be very durable but instead of you know the wealthiest guy that could have that done for his family has duct taped the metal sheets onto it. Also a sentry gun or automated defense is difficult. Only if you want to stick around however. If you just like duct tape a motion sensor onto an aa12 and a bunch of motors and then hide in the panic room to God knows not set off the sentry then that would be pretty fucking lethal. And turret on roof is a nice idea but you would have to leave the house and could get shot. But the best thing they could have possibly done but didn't: Leave the fucking USA. Grab your bajillion dollars, buy a house in idk, Denmark or so and live a happy safe life. Where I'm from the only people on the streets at night are drunk people. This movie was so dumb that I had to watch it and I found it even dumber afterwards. But I would 100% want an automated turret. I would definately mount a naval cannon on my roof and watch whatever decides to annoy me evaporate XD

Honestly the kid having the code to the house is not that unbelievable. If the parents died during the purge night for whatever reason while the house is on the lock down, the kids would essentially starve to death as they'd be trapped in the house without knowing the code.
This is one of those stories where the tension only exists because everyone is really dumb, which is literally the basis for most Disney Channel shows.
The brain cells in this movie amounted to one all shared by the family making 1/4 for each member and as the movie progressed it kept on splitting and splitting making it smaller.

I believe the most efficient way of protection in the purge would be setting a death perimeter around your house. Anything that crosses that perimeter when active is killed with some sort of automatic system, will it be friend or foe. Later you just burn the pile of corpses.

When I first heard the concept of the purge, I thought there would be much more shoplifting and robbing banks rather than murdering strangers for ‘stress relievers’. The more I looked into it I did suspect that people murdered strangers for overpopulation. Still, even when I thought about the murder I thought it would have been with abusive relatives or anything around that circle of reasons. Also how did the leader just shoot the stranger? Did he just get no recoil when he fired? Or is he just so tough that he doesn’t get affected by laws of physics? God I hate questions with no answers
It did seem like the next couple of movies and the show tried to make explanations for things after people kept poking holes into the premise.

To everyone who hasn't seen the movie:
The real reason why The Purge became a thing was actually for population control, specifically to cut down the homeless and poverty rate.
This movie isn't very good, obviously, but to be fair, it is for much better reasons than "letting out stress".
Personally, I would have made this movie about a lower class family that can't just leave the country. I also would have made it so that most killing/robbing being done, was done by people the victims knew (since that's how it is in real life).
To be fair the series and other movies do kinda cover that thing.
the actual message behind the movie is that it's a whole lot easier to solve problems before they become catastrophes that require drastic measures.
Still fucking stupid. Just add population control, like China did, and china didn't even need to enforce it, they just did it through the power of money and tax cuts.
I would've made this movie about how all the middle class families get together to tactically strategize how to maximize their financial situation on that day via insider trading tips and tax evasion schemes. Nobody would have locked anything down because they would have no motivation to murder each other because most people don't. And a few of them would be armed just to ensure they could repel anyone who would attack. Nobody would, of course, because predation isn't successful if you attack people who can easily end you, so it'd be largely uneventful.
The sequel would involve a 19 year old that gets it on with his 15 year old girlfriend because statuatory laws wouldn't apply. Then they'd continue their committed relationship afterwards anyway, although the parents would disapprove, nobody would be murdered because again, most people don't want that on their consciences.
These movies would be extremely celebrated obviously for how accurate they are.
If this is how population control exist then no fucking wonder people are stupid.

You have a zillion dollars in home defenses but NO motion sensors? And NOT ONE active defense, not even so much as an electric fence? No mines? No turret on the roof? Whatever home defense company this guy works for, I could put them all out of business in an afternoon.

Don't forget, the doorframes/windows and the likings are not reinforced at all. You can 100% build something like that to be very durable but instead of you know the wealthiest guy that could have that done for his family has duct taped the metal sheets onto it. Also a sentry gun or automated defense is difficult. Only if you want to stick around however. If you just like duct tape a motion sensor onto an aa12 and a bunch of motors and then hide in the panic room to God knows not set off the sentry then that would be pretty fucking lethal. And turret on roof is a nice idea but you would have to leave the house and could get shot.
But the best thing they could have possibly done but didn't: Leave the fucking USA. Grab your bajillion dollars, buy a house in idk, Denmark or so and live a happy safe life. Where I'm from the only people on the streets at night are drunk people. This movie was so dumb that I had to watch it and I found it even dumber afterwards. But I would 100% want an automated turret. I would definately mount a naval cannon on my roof and watch whatever decides to annoy me evaporate XD

Honestly the kid having the code to the house is not that unbelievable. If the parents died during the purge night for whatever reason while the house is on the lock down, the kids would essentially starve to death as they'd be trapped in the house without knowing the code.
This is one of those stories where the tension only exists because everyone is really dumb, which is literally the basis for most Disney Channel shows.
The brain cells in this movie amounted to one all shared by the family making 1/4 for each member and as the movie progressed it kept on splitting and splitting making it smaller.

At least in a place with a purge people know instead of having it happen in dark allies and behind backs. Do you have any idea how common it is for such things to happen? But people will turn a blind eye and pretend it doesn't. So here, have a in your face purge. Because if all that's done is turning a blind eye then deal with the consequences. The film could have shown that well. Instead we get "Another family film". Think of the plot we could have had.

I believe the most efficient way of protection in the purge would be setting a death perimeter around your house. Anything that crosses that perimeter when active is killed with some sort of automatic system, will it be friend or foe. Later you just burn the pile of corpses.
