Great video as always! I have had the Speedmaster professional (Moon watch) since '91 when it was given to me as a gift as I was commissioned into the Army. It was my everyday watch for 20 years or so and went with me around the world to many rough and unfriendly places. I must say it is very rugged and durable. It was my first "Nice" watch and I did not appreciate its true value for many years and treated it as a daily tool watch. I know its was in the water with me many times with no problems. I did finally retire it and had the crystal replaced and a good cleaning and service. Now its put away for special occasions. Truly at Great watch! And much more durable and rugged then one would think. Thanks again for the great video!

HNY! Setting the bar quite high for the new year, excellent video! My (James here) take on the Navi's X-Factor: It's a super busy dial but it all comes together seamlessly that makes the watch legible and functional. That's what makes the Navi special to me; you'd think the markings on the dial would make it difficult to read the time, but not at all with the Navi.

That speedmaster looks absolutely stunning, such a classic. The nato strap gives it a contemporary feel though, it's a very good match.

Good to see you back in the War Room. :) Nice intro btw. Your expertise is really showing through.
You could call me a convert to the Navitimer because I previously thought it was a bit garish. But over the past 6 or 7 months I've come to find my interests with the designs of watches varies greatly. My one rule now is that if I can't tell the time just by glancing at a watch, then it's not for me no matter how pretty it is.

Thanks for this review of two iconic watches. I’ve never owned either, so I can only speak from listening to others and my own opinions. I need to caveat myself by saying that I love watches that have some special quality, call it bling if you want. No doubt, the Speedmaster is a very high-quality, durable (high end, automatic) watch. It is definitely a more popular watch in the horological community. I think this is because watches with any real character which makes them stand out is considered passé. I guess, as usual, I am the non-conformist here because I like watches that catch the eye. I’m not talking about garish Invictas with 50 mm gold cases encrusted with brightly colored stones, just something that stands out a bit which is exactly what I like about the Navitimer. To me, the X factor of the Navitimer is nearly off the charts, while a Speedmaster has no X factor at all, it’s just a nice looking watch. If I look down at my wrist and saw a Speedmaster, I’d know what the time was; if I looked down at my wrist and saw a Navitimer timer, I’ go WOW!

The Breitling Navitimer 01 is my favorite. It would score much better, especially in movement and durability.

    • @davidrichter3681
      @davidrichter3681 4 роки тому

I agree. It should be a 10 for movement. I recently purchased the Breitling Navitimer B01 43mm in the iconic and classic steel and black with the leather folding clasp strap. The in-house movement has a quick set date but it does take a lot of turning to get it to change probably to prevent you from advancing the date accidentally. The movement also has a 70 hour power reserve and a sapphire display caseback which is pretty cool unlike the 41mm version in this video. Love this watch! I like to use the aviator slide rule bezel to calculate average speed when I drive. I have a 6.5 inch wrist or 16.5 cm and it fits fine because of where the strap pivots inside the lugs.

  • @randybrickson4290
    @randybrickson4290 7 років тому

This is by far your best watch review. I think this is due to two aspects. First, the extended shots of the two side by side, with you off camera, facilitates evaluation by the viewer as you compare the two criterion by criterion. Second, your comments are pitch perfect. I can't recall another review of yours where your selection of word or phrasing is so on-key.
Both of these watches are extremely charismatic. I'm much more of a "steel sports Rolex" guy, but the character of these two watches is undeniable.
That said, this particular NATO-Navi pairing is an absolute dog. You put a proper black leather strap on it and it sings.

I bought my Speedy at a time I was as naive about watches as I could be. I hadn't owned a watch for a long while, and never a nice one. I married my wife in Korea and here they have a tradition of buying watches for each other as wedding gifts (there is less focus on the diamond ring, although nobody is going to complain if they get both a nice watch and a big diamond).
Without any research, really - although I knew I was drawn to Omega - I picked out my favorite watch I saw in the Omega shop that fit my little wrist. Three years later, I love this watch more than I did the day I bought it. It's the "Speedmaster Date", and to be honest I don't know what it's reputation is in the watch community. I imagine it is not the most sought after version, with the slightly uncommon vertical dials.
Would be interested to hear from TGV or others what the opinion is of the Date, however all that really matters is that it's lovely and I love it. It certainly is a more squashed and compact package, not as elegant and sexy as TGV's speedy in the video, but I love it all the same

Owning the FOIS I can definitely agree with the score for the Speedmaster. Hello TVG, in my humble opinion your points are all valid. But after many years I have come to the conclusion after many watches that the watches that touch me most are not because of specs or popularity but because how the pieces reach my heart. My reverse panda a23322 just wood me when I first saw it many years ago. I sold my speedy to fund it in part and have absolutely no regrets. I was born in 52 so the navi just has that classic feeling of many years past.

    Hi TGV,
what an amazing intro! Very well done my friend!
I totally agree with your rating and would favor (personally) the Speedmaster all day as the Navitimer is a bit too busy for me. However, concerning "brand prestige & heritage", I think that Breitling is much more known here in Germany than Omega. Rolex and Breitling are the two brands which every person knows, even if they don't care much about watches.
Anyway, great and entertaining "battle" as usual ;)
    Take care.
    Cheers!

Another nice vid, TGV. BTW, your video production values in the opening sequence with the two watches is very, very impressive. Mad skills there, my friend.
For me the classic, basic Speedy with baton hands and the hesalite crystal and stainless caseback is, and will always be, my favorite. Of course, I'd like to have one with a 321 calibre, but those are getting pretty dang pricey these days, especially with the recent auction at Christies driving prices up even further. As for the Navi, man, this watch is just too busy for me. If I were ever to buy one, it would be the Sinn 903, though.
    Cheers and Happy New Year!
    best,
    Stephen

Great video to start the year, TGV! Was surprised that the Speedy pulled ahead by so much; I thought it would be a closer fight. The Navitimer is indeed the more polarizing watch. I didn't care for it at first, but now I see why it's a special timepiece, especially when it's on the wrist. But the Speedy is a classic for a reason, and this breakdown is a great illustration of that.

@The Urban Gentry just a quick fact check: at 22:23 you say you wouldn't see James bond wearing a Omega Speedmaster. The James Bond franchise has been supporting and using the Speedmaster since '95 in James Bond Goldeneye. In Casino Royal, when Bond meets Vesper on the train she specifically compliments his watch and she asks "Rolex?" - Bond replies "Omega". Sort of confirming the brand support.
Ps. Love your channel - I'm just a student, and realize the watch game is an expensive one, but you've sparked a great enthusiasm for watches in me, and I recently got a Seiko SKX007! Love it, and am looking at a vintage Omega Seamaster Automatic (c.'50s-'60s) as an affordable luxury gateway watch! Subscribed today, and will continue to watch your shows! Love your show - FOIS Omega is by far the most attractive of all “affordable “ Speedmasters (I’m not mentioning Ed White 321 movement etc)much more refined with beautiful straight lugs and I really love the lack of crown guards as it’s making it not as cluttered and butch as moonwatch variants and I do realize that it’s just a personal preference. Navitimer is an old favorite of mine but Speedmaster had to come first ,period and I choose FOIS after very long process and a few tries of the latest reference all the way down to “ reduced “ with neither hitting the sweet spot - they just doesn’t wear the same . I also love the fact that FOIS looks authentically refined looking as an original vintage (admittedly without the associated beautiful patina) ,but without the worry of its depleting value should you decide to wear it too frequently. Regards from Cape Town.
    PS
I am currently wearing it on a black NATO strap and it looks just absolutely awesome , also got a Milanese mesh bracelet from the states ,but haven’t tried it on yet . Finally , the Navitimer undoubtedly has the advantage in X Factor as you’ve mentioned and it’s instinctive and just because…😊

I really enjoyed this video. Per your request for feedback, my favorite version of the speedy is the classic 3570 with the manual wind movement. And as "busy" as the Navitimer's dial might be, I have to admit that it looks pretty stunning and I would love to own one. But I agree with you that the Speedmaster is the overall winner due to history, design, and versatility. Thank you for the great videos and for your respect for all brands and tiers of watches. It's refreshing!

    Hi TGV,
Liked the special intro and the review was well done.
I just had the FOIS on the wrist and am falling for it. The more refined lugs, no crown guards, and the applied logo just do it for me. Only letdown are the 19mm lug width and that you haven't git a bracelet from the get-go.
Funny, one of my first watches was a Citizen Nighthawk, which is a homage to the iconic Navitimer!
Cheers from Germany and happy new year!

I agree about the 19mm lugs, a real shame but no watch is perfect and I wear it well with 20mm nato straps, or leather, just trim a tiny bit off and bingo!
LOVE the Nighthawk btw, I see what you mean calling it a "homage", but actually think it is very much its own thing and I respect it for that. Happy new year btw!

I have a Speedy, Tudor RP, Monaco, etc. I have a love for chronos. I was frankly underwhelmed by the speedy which I do have along with a seamaster but the Navitimer oozes with class and style that reminds me of the 50s when style was common. I am waiting for a A23322 reverse panda any day now and am really excited. I have my Speedy for sale right now because I rarely wear it. Watches in this price range are mainly purchased to impress to some extent. It is no longer when everyone has one. The Breitling is identified from across the room. My most recent choice was between the A23322 or a Hanhart reverse panda.

TGV, would you consider the Speedmaster the clear winner in the Omega range? I'm considering upgrading from my current "highest end watch", which is a quartz Tag Aquaracer, and am lusting over an Omega Speedmaster Professional. In your opinion, is this the "gold standard" Omega? Or would a Seamaster be a good choice as well? It's going to be used for dress/casual.

I think the new Navi with the B01 tops the Speedi in every category...
I think we need a rematch!

    Hello,
What do you think of the omega Aqua terra xxl small seconds? I purchased one recently and struggling to find any decent reviews. It is now discontinued.

Is that a blue dial on the Navitimer? Looks fantastic. I think the nato on the Speedy may suit the Navitimer quite nicely, with the off white of the subdials matching the off white stripes.

As always, another excellent video. I was actually quite surprised that the speedy won, considering your fondness of your navitimer. But I'm glad that didn't sway your objectiveness. I'm currently saving for my first Speedy myself. Still debating which outlet I should buy it from, new, grey market, or used. Another watch that is on my radar from Breitling is the Transocean Chronograph. It also has that minimalistic look that the speedy has with the vintage B logo. Anyways hope you had a smooth flight back home. Take care!

Epic battle. What a way to start the year. I have to say I agree with your results and score, great comparison. For me I would buy the Speedy first, mainly that it's just more versatile for almost any occasion.

Breitlings featured in the Bond movie _Thunderball_ . Bond wore a heavily modified _Top Time_ which doubled as a geiger counter gadget. But also featured in the movie was the _Navitimer_ . They used the _Navitimer_ because it has a very distinctive appearance and could be easily recognised by the audience. It served as a minor plot device; the watch being owned by one of the characters and later being worn by an imposter. Worth checking out the movie again to see what I mean.

I really dont understand why the Navitimes is not waterproof. When Scott Carpenter wore the Navitimer as a Mercury astronaut, the watch was damaged by submersion in seawater when the spacecraft landed back on Earth. What an advert, huh...

I have been looking forward to this video for a while now, what a great new intro! And two great chronographs for sure. In my mind the speedy wins, but I might be bias due to the fact that I own one. 😀
Edited as I just realised I wrote u own one instead of I own one.

Great video, actually it would be very interesting to see diferent price ranges comparison specially if they do share other category at the same time for example all divers, dress, aviation or everyday watches.

Note that this is the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 39.7mm First Omega in Space and not the Moonwatch 42mm Hesalite crystal vs. the Breitling Navitimer 41mm and not the 43mm B01 in-house movement. If that were the case, I think that the scores for the Navitimer would have been higher.

Great duel! I have to say, initially, I told myself the Breitling would win the duel (X-factor and brand heritage). It was a pleasant surprise to see the Speedy win the duel. I know it was difficult to stay objective, but I really agree with the duel outcome.
    Customary question for you...
The shirt you're wearing in the video, where did you buy it?
Again, great job as always TGV!

Beautiful 😍 fantastic video mate! what lovely time pieces. I currently own the 311. Speedy Pro. But you ask its got to be the Original Vintage 321 Speedmaster broad Arrow. Tho I love the Co-axial Speedmaster 57 Broad Arrow..... too many watches only two wrists😅

If you ever get one would love to see a duel between your Submariner and the Omege Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial.
As far as Speedmasters go my first and only one I've ever owned is the 311.30.42.30.01.005 which is the one with the hesalite crystal. I'm usually sapphire all the way because of it's scratch resistance however the hesalite just had a certain look that put it over the sapphire for me. Just gives the watch a whole different look.

When I went to pick up a watch I didn't even give the omegas a second looking , the breitling navis beat them hands down and the bond breitling is the top time

Thanks for this review TGV. I was eagerly anticipating this as im currently between two minds of the two. Wish I could get both but i think i will eventually get the Speedy first, as i prefer the more vintage looking domed crystal style of the speedy. Definitely agree the navi has more of an X factor which i like aswel. So hard to choose!!
    Cheers,
    Chad

My problem is that the Navitimer went from tool watch detailing to a sense of over-adornment. It would be interesting to compare an original AOPA to a 2998 Speedy.
Nice comparison TGV, but perhaps you rated the Navi a wee bit high. ?

I've owned a .861 Speedmaster since 1968, and have worn it since I was a late teenager. But I always wanted the Navitimer. I love the look of the Navitmer but I don't know if NASA even tested it for space use.

great video! The speedmaster is just fantastic, its the first really expensive watch I intend to buy when I have the money. For me personally, it would get 11/10 at the X-factor because of its history. One thing about chronographs with big history: Please check out the Russian Strela Chronographs. They were worn by russian cosmonauts, so kind of the russian omega speedmaster. Not many people know about them, I think they are very cool.

Great duel TGV, really enjoyed it. My gut feel was that the Speedy would edge it but it would be a bit closer. I don't disagree with any of your reasoning though. Looking forward to your London photos.

Interesting duel! I would choose the Speedy even though the Navi is more iconic. I like the less complicated dial as I do not have a use for all the calculations that the Navi is capable of performing. The versitility of the Speedy does it for me.
