  • Today I will show you how to Install macOS Big Monterey 12 on an Unsupported Mac, MacBook iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Pro - Basically ANY MAC that has been made from around 2008 onwards. However I will show you how you can check if your Mac is comptible with Monterey.
    To be clear this guide shows you how to install Mac OS Monterey, it is up to you to backup your data first and use Monterey at your own risk, I am not responsible for any loss of data etc...For me as you can see I installed Monterey and it worked for me, however due to unforeseen circumstances I can't help with all install steps if it doesn't work out for you. I also can't support or guide you on the use of additional Apps you may install like for example Office (word, powerpoint, excel), Final Cut Pro, Photoshop etc... they may work - they may not. However do help others in the comments if you get Apps to work what other are struggling with.
    Please make sure your Mac is Compatible here;
    dortania.githu...
    Using OpenCore; I have successfully installed macOS Big Monterey 12 onto a 2012 MacBook Pro and you can to on your Intel Mac!
    You will need a USB stick and and the OpenCore Legacy patcher.
    The USB stick I have used and works with MacOS Big Sur is this one;
    UK - amzn.to/2UKD7EW
    You can download this from OpenCore Legacy website;

I bought a second mac which was running Catalina and my current mac Montery and I tried to migrate data but it didn't work due to the OS compatibility and after following your instructions its all up and working. Thank you for this info. I installed Monterey on an 120GB SSD from OWC that I had bought for a Mac Mini expansion, in an external enclosure. So my late 2008 MB Pro 5,1 w/8GB RAM now runs OS 10.11.6 from the spiny drive, or with the external plugged in it runs Monterey. It took me a few tries to get the installation right and the 'About one minute remaining' at the end took an hour or more to finish. I have some things that won't run on the latest OS so this gives me two machines in one. Further info on my MB - This machine sat for years, I thought it was dead, because the power supply light was on and the machine wouldn't work. I plugged in my old power supply from another MB by accident one day and this MB came back to life.

    Great instructions! I bought a used 2012 Mac Mini on the cheap, just run a certain program that I needed. My hopes were dashed when I found that it could only install the software on a recent OSX version that the 2012 machine would not upgrade to. Coming from a Windows background, I did not expect this. The patch saved me. Thank you for the video!

    Can't thank you enough for this video Matt. It has saved me a small fortune. I bought a new MacBook Pro last year because I was stuck on High Sierra on my (mid 2011) 27" iMac with 24GB of RAM and 1TB SSD and couldn't upgrade to the latest levels of PS and LR for photo editing and other software that I use. My iMac was working perfectly apart from that. I was about to invest in a new monitor to go with my MacBook Pro as I missed my 27" screen for photo editing. Your instructions were very clear with plenty of warnings on backup etc. I did have a few squeaky bum moments as I could not get my bluetooth Magic Mouse or Keyboard to connect after installing Monterey. I had to borrow USB versions of both from friends to get past these steps. However, once Monterey was fully installed and rebooted both connected as I would expect. I don't know if you have tried installing this on an iMac, but I would suggest that you recommend to have USB mouse and keyboard available just in case. Thanks once again.

    With your help, I installed MacOS Monterey 12.5 on three old Apple computers: A MacBook Pro 13-inch Retina (Late 2013), a Mac mini (Late 2012) and an iMac (27-inch, Late 2009). It's sad that these perfectly good machines are denied the latest operating system by Apple. My MacBook Pro already had solid state storage, but by just installing SSDs into the Mac mini and the iMac, they're working great. (Note, the Find My and Maps apps don't work on the 2009 iMac). I really appreciate your help and I appreciate the work of the team who developed Open Core Legacy Patcher.

    had a bit of trouble on a mac mini 6,1 from 2012. followed the instructions and ignored the prompt to install opencore to the usb after creating the installer, which seemed odd. installed to efi of the machine instead as recommended. maybe i misheard. a short while after starting install, came back to a powered off machine. when powering on no chime, wouldn't boot from either choice after using option key to boot - received a circle with line through it and link to support mac startup website. grabbed a backup mac and installed opencore to the usb installer, made sure to choose correct target model identifier. then was able to complete install. and now can boot off the hard disk no problems. thanks for this guide! all to get automated captions from captionator. now to reinstall my digi 002! lol wish me luck. i'm not frugal you're frugal. if I were to do this again, I would focus on writing opencore to the efi of the usb installer initially and post install would install both opencore to the efi and also the post install patch. the patch said it was already completed but i did it anyways and it overwrote all the files.
    I used opencore 0.6.6 and monterey 12.6.6. downloaded monterey elsewhere not through opencore. hope this helps someone.

    Nice video, but absolutely no need to erase your original OS when installing or upgrading your OS. It will install/upgrade over it perfectly well, just as if you'd done a standard OS upgrade from Apple. All your Apps and settings are still there. No need to recover them from a Time Machine backup (although do still make one).
    Upgraded an HFS+ High Sierra machine to APFS Big Sur with OCLP and it both translated the disk system from HFS+ to APFS as well as did the installation and upgrade to Big Sur. Because that's what Apple does and they're actually doing the work. OCLP just says "Yes, this machine is compatible (wink), over to you Apple." When all the dust has settled, it applies any required patches.

    I just succesfully installed monterey on my macbook pro 13 mid 2012, took a while though since first I installed it on the wrong drive, so I had to start over again and then when I was finished it started rebooting again and again, I thought it had just got stuck on a bootloop, but I let it do it's thing and it rebooted like 5-6 times before it went on to the setup phase, but now I have monterey installed and everything seems to be working. And now, I can install xcode on my 2012 macbook pro, I'm glad I didn't shell out the extra money for a 2015 macbook pro that would've been officially supported by apple for monterey. Also, I have 16gb of ram and a big ssd in my mbp, would've had to settle for 8gb/128gb ssd base model 2015 mbp otherwise. These opensource guys behind this project deserve my thanks for doing this, allowing people to keep using their old macbooks without them becoming e-waste. I should probably try this on my old 2011 imac as well.

    Hello, I've used your tutorial to install MacOS Monterey on a 2012 IMac and it worked well, thanks ! However, I've recently updated the IMac to the 12.6 version and now the graphics are weird : I can't control the brightness and everything is dark and a bit slower. What can I do to fix it ? should I not make any updates if I install MacOS Monterey with your tutorial ? thank you in advance !
    Update : I updated OpenCore Patcher and installed the patches and everything is back to normal !

    Well, what a great video. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
    I tried a few other tutorials, had zero success with them, and wasted several hours. I might add that a few screens were a little different from yours along the way but nothing I could not work out.
    The final part of the installation got to "Under one minute remaining," and it must have taken about 15 minutes. I was beginning to think it had frozen, but it hadn't. Several Apple logo start-up screens kept looping over and over. At that point, I removed the USB drive and shut the PC down. The restart took forever, but eventually, it started up OK.
    My MacBook Air originally had OS X Yosemite dated Oct 2014 and the PC is a MacBook Air 7,2 so this is a great update, also when I went to run the patcher there were none required and the old PC is running very well considering it only has 4GB ram and is an Intel i5 with 128 SSD.

    Worked. 2010 MacBook pro. The open core software has changed a little but do the same as the video. Do everything the same way. Make sure you download the installer to the right place and the open core installer and if you did everything right you're usually just sitting there waiting for a really long time for things to download and to install. It restarted about 4 times showing the installer and I thought it was stuck in a boot loop but it was just installing.

    Mate, I had a 2012 imac I bought running on Catalina, and I needed it for Final Cut Pro but FCP turns out cannot be installed on Catalina! I was ready to resell teh imac before I saw your video...went step by step at the same time with you and it worked! well done, really good content!

    Thanks for this video, I updated my MacBook pro early 2011 with SSD and 16gb ram, and although now turning on the laptop takes more time the Monterey works really good. Something I've noticed is some last version apps run good and others are not opening, it is a shame as the computer still has a lot of ´life´ and the companies are pushing us to buy the newest gear for access to their programs.

    Incredible step by step tutorial! Thank you so much Matt.
    My early 2011 macbook pro was slowly being rendered usueless and operating very slowly and many apps starting to stop working.... I knew the hardware was still fine and capable but Apple are dirty by not allowing me above High Sierra.
    I followed this video at every stage after a ridiculously long 1st time time machine backup... my mac had 8gb ram but 500gb spinny HD.
    However i managed to install OS Ventura 13.6.4 using your steps and opencore 🙌 in 6 hours (honestly thought it would be an all day & night thing - think i was lucky by having 8gb ram)
    I now have Ventura and macbook is working fast and fantastic again, just need to reinstall my apps and paste my files from my earlier time machine backup.
    1 thing to note... upon doing the final step 'opencore patcher - Root patches' i looked at my usb files and the opencore patcher download was NOT THERE only the OS installer... so i worried i may not finish the last phase and fix patches.
    I went on safari and followed all the instructions again from early in the video when downloading the opencore launcher.
    Fortunately once it downloaded and opened, it gave the option to 'root patched version' or whatever it says, as i was worried it wouldnt know.
    I ran the root patch option as Matt showed (except i had to redownload it as opposed to it still being on the usb as it was for Matt)
    The mac restarted and then i trash canned the opencore app as stated.
    And boom! All done. Absolutely buzzing by this and has saved my computer.
    Literally do everything slowly and watch each step in the video as you do it, to avoid mistakes.
    Thank you Matt you legend ❤

    Great video. The only (BIG) issue is that the new installed iOS has a lot of network issues like: Not being able to connect to other Wi-Fis, once deactivated Bluetooth I cannot reactivate it, Airplay not working (which was the reason for all this). Any idea on what is going wrong? I have searched for hours, but could not find a solution.

    Thanks Matt, I have just got a 2012 Mac Mini cheap off eBay as my first Apple product (haven't been able to afford one before), it was better than I thought, it came with a 256Gb SSD and 8Gb RAM as opposed to 128 SSD and 6Gb RAM advertised. I've just upgraded to Catalina but can't load a lot of Apps I want. So I'm hoping I can use Opencore Legacy Patcher to bring it up to Monterey 😊

    Matt - i have a really buggy imac 2013 doing various mad stuff so i know something not right. Its bog standard & so i was hoping Monterey instal might just eliminate it. In opencore i don't get the download link in assets, its just spinning a wheel constantly. Tried different browsers etc. I take it its the imac and its problems causing obstacle to the download would you say ?
