Hey Dosdude1, just wanted to thank you for your extremely brilliant and professional work creating and delivering for free this macOS Catalina Patcher.
Let me tell you I waisted a lot of time trying to install Catalina on my MacBook Pro mid 2010 (7,1) using Open Core Legacy Patcher (OCLP), but it is extremely slow and unstable compared with your solution.

First and foremost, a trillion thanks for the extraordinary guidance-truly, you've worked wonders. Managing to upgrade to Catalina on my vintage Mac Pro 5.1 was nothing short of a revelation. I've yet to encounter a single hiccup; it's smooth sailing all the way and astoundingly, it's outperforming High Sierra. Monumental kudos to you for that!
The tutorial you provided was nothing short of a masterclass. One attempt was all it took to get everything in order. It’s absurd how Apple overlooks the potential of older models when, clearly, these systems are perfectly capable of running more modern software. As someone knee-deep in 3D modeling and web development, I can definitively say their 'incompatibility' claim holds no water. So, really, an ocean of gratitude for dispelling that myth and for making my work and life remarkably easier and better.

Update to my comment above: I have upgraded to OpenCore to enable unsupported OS's on my 12 core Mac Pro 5,1. This enables me to run a multi-boot set of unmodified, un-patched OS's, including everything from Mojave to Monterey *and* Windows 11. Catalina Patcher was great when it was the only game in town, but times have changed. I'm still grateful to dosdude1 for showing me what is possible on this old heavy iron, but I no longer recommend Catalina Patcher to those looking to extend the life of their Mac Pro 5,1. Best wishes to you and yours...

I had to reinstall the High Sierra and wait for future solutions.

Update: Unfortunately i have been experiencing many stability issues with "Catalina".
I tried installing "Mojave" too (thought maybe it would be better and more stable) but still similar issues.
Simple tasks like using Microsoft Office are hard to use with stability. MS Office for example keeps crashing or cannot write (stops responding on my typing).
    The computer needs restart.
No serious issues when exploring the internet though (I'm using Chrome & Mozilla Firefox).
It is worth upgrading if you need a machine to mainly surf the net and be able to visit any website.

The king of outdated Macs has struck again! :) Very happy to see this, as I way eyeing a MacBook7,1 maschine. Those are super pretty imo! Anyway - I do have a question, well, two actually.
    1. Why use "Reinstall" instead of the normal installation method? Are the procedures of these two different? From what I would guess, "reinstall" would basically write the basesystem and the other files from the installation package ontop to the disk, where the normal install would check for an existing setup and delete some stuff first. Is that assumption right, or is there a different reason for this specific aproach?
    2. You mentioned that you wrote an APFS "bootloader", so to say. Since this has to be an EFI program at this stage, what toolchain did you use to compile it and how exactly does it mount an APFS volume? As far as I know, APFS itself isn't exactly open source. I'd be very interested to see in how this bootloader worked. Plus, can this be patched into a vanilla install? I have a bunch of prepared install medias prepared already - one for each milestone, almost... So I would just use the post-patching tool to finish a job - but how can I attach the APFS bootloader?

    • @FacchiniBRTV
      @FacchiniBRTV 5 років тому +3

After converting to APFS I just closed the Utilities window and did a normal 'upgrade' install. Macbook 6,1 256GB SSD. It uses the default APFS efi loader that apple uses, but because the newer machines get a firmware update that includes this directly, this is no problem. But, because your machine was older and Apple never included it in your firmware, you need to use it separately.

Really neat patcher & fantastic work! This is so neat. Had some hiccups but overall it’s worked pretty well. The patcher did fail on what I thought was supported hardware (late 2008 Alu MB) so I installed in a 2009 MBP and all went well there so I swapped the SSD back into my 08 and the MB booted right up. Just one weird quirk is the Wi-Fi dies when woken from sleep. I read that the fix is to reinstall the post installer patch.

I can't thank you enough for this video and the Catalina patcher. I've spent five days trying to reinstall Catalina after a fatal crash. Apple's system would only allow me to install Mavericks! I tried numerous utilities and various programs only to go around in circles with no fix. Your patcher worked like a charm and your video is very intuitive, straightforward and clear. Thank you my friend. You are a genius :)

Not sure if the card is suitable but I remember having trouble with the Mojave patch and pretty much made my computer unusable. I think it would be the graphics card possibly. I use logic x, cubase, ableton and Final Cut Pro. Would definitely like to try and update again but very cautious after what happened last time. It pretty much ended up blowing almost all my ram which I’ve recently replaced all. I had graphics anomalies as well as the computer screen freezing and eventually the black screen of death. It was a rabbit hole that I will never like to visit again. On the plus side I learnt a lot about resetting and the internal workings of a Mac. 😃

Everyone should be grateful for all the hard work DosDude has put into the software he has written and the explanatory videos he has edited. It is extraordinary that so much talent is available to everyone for not more than a donation. That said, I, as a reasonably tech -savvy but not geek user, found the guidance incomprehensible. Like so many similar videos, it holds your hand carefully through all the pretty obvious, straightforward actions, but then glosses over anything vaguely complicated. For instance, unsupported Macs will very often have new GPUs. This will of course, in 90% of cases be non Mac flashed, so there will be no boot disk option. So the first advice should be: put back your old Mac GPU. Second, having started with a simple set up, there suddenly appear a whole host of volumes which seem to have sprung from nowhere, and which all seem to be given roughly the same names, that can be readily erased. If your system disk is to be erased, why not install to the system drive in the first place, and rely on your back-ups? While there is a ‘to-do list’ of actions there is really no explanation of why things need to be done and what one is attempting to achieve at each stage. In the end I was completely baffled. And please, the verbal ticks ‘go ahead and’ and ‘what you are going to want to do’ are otiose verbiage that just clutter the explanations. Sorry to appear harsh but if one’s set up is not identical then I cannot see how you can modify the routine without knowing why things are being done and what exactly is important.

I disagree and I'm sorry if I'm harsh but this video is not for dummies. You need to get that right. You have a choice! Why would you want to upgrade in the first place? You might want to ask someone who knows how to patch and upgrade rather than being critical about someone who spent hours and hours of time building something, making a video on how to do It and giving it to the public with no monetary intentions. I think we need to be forever grateful for the efforts that has been put by Collin here. You literally wasted your time trying all this and commenting here. It is not for you.

Fotis, the symptoms you described seem to centre under our variant of MBPro as my Late 2011 had no brightness adjustment either on the Mojave Patcher and then discovered that it wouldn’t go into sleep when I closed the lid, and if I did put it into sleep via the Apple Menu, it wouldn’t come out of sleep without a hard reset.
Collin graciously responded to these issues via email and it’s Graphics card related.
I rolled back to High Sierra and it’s where I stay.

Just wanted to add my two cents. I tried to install Catalina on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and it would reboot at the 4 minute mark. When I I checked the SSD no changes had been made to my SSD. When I tried to install to a conventional HDD plugged into the USB it worked fine. I formatted the SSD and cloned the partitions from the HDD to the SSD using the restore function in DiskUtils, applied the patches. Rebooted and the Mac would give me a folder with the "?". I booted back into the patcher ran DiskUtils and ran FirstAid on the SSD, this corrected the problem, I unplugged the USB drive restarted and the MAC started fine and continued into Catalina setup. I hope this helps someone experiencing the same problem.

I don't have an external hard drive so, I tried to see if running FirstAid as you did would help. It seems that using the restore function in DiskUtils and cloning the partitions from your HDD to your SSD is what did the trick for you. I don't want to buy an external hard drive if I don't have to, so if anyone knows of a workaround, please comment.
