I have a 27" 2009 iMac that I use mostly for plugging my M1 Mac Mini into to use as a nice 27" monitor. It works wonderfully well when running High Sierra. BUT one day I used the magic to install Catalina on the iMac, and it stopped working as an external monitor! Fortunately, I had a Time Machine backup of the High Sierra system, and I'm happy again.
I got a strange error . White screen and a circle in the center. I have mac os x 10.6.8. And macbook 4.1. How can i contact you for help? I want to send a video
Hi@@AlinR624, Same Problem occurred with my MacBook Pro Mid-2009 exactly same spec as Matt's; I have gone up to the 16:45 seconds up until then I followed everything exactly as Matt mentioned and did perfectly fine. But unfortunately I have got the sign you mentioned that is called either "NO ENTRY SIGN" or "PROHIBITORY SIGN" and when I use some other commands in order to boot it from the SSD Hard drive marked as "MACKINTOSH" on this occasion a "FLASHING FOLDER" comes up with a "QUESTION MARK" on it! Then again tried to do click on the "Recovery" option no luck at all! I booked an appointment with the Apple Shop in Trafford Centre Manchester Genius Bar and taken my MacBook Pro to them; One of the technician asked as to what happened to be honest I could not tell the truth as I might be refused to help; I just told him that It was one of the Restart of the MacBook pro and I had seen that It was not booting up as it was before? He tried several command options but realised that none of the commands was ending up in a satisfactory result? He even tried to boot my Mac Book Pro from an external Drive with El-Capitan installed on it that didn't work either! Connecting to the Apple server and was trying to download the Software from Apple Network (spine) was the first attempt anyway. Eventually I was told that Either my MacBook had a faulty hard Disk (SSD) or the Flex/ribbon cable that connects the Hard Disk to the mother board was faulty? I replaced Both of them Still my MacBook pro is in the Bricked (damaged heavily) condition and I do not know where and who to turn up to? Apple customer service adviser told me that the MacBook that I own has ended by Apple they neither manufacture nor supply any parts for it? I was advised to go one of the Independent Apple trained Technicians in Manchester area and then again he mentioned that If there is a damage with the mother board it is not worth having it repaired as it might be costing one and a half of the value of the MacBook that have got? and not worth having it repaired! I can not blame anyone this includes Matt who has shown how to do this upgrade in hiss video and he doesn't accept any liability and obviously I have got no right to blame him> It is my fault I did try to upgrade it and it didn't work but just bricked my MacBook Pro? Has anyone else like @Alin Andreca and me experienced same issue or similar issue and found a solution for this kind of error that we experienced? Any help would be much appreciated. I do thank you all in advance for those UA-cam community members who are willing to help on this issue? Regards

This sounds amazing, my question is, do I need to backup all my files separated or use the time machine to protect my files before installing Catalina?
Sonia Tello Good question - I thought it would update to Catalina and keep all the old settings, but.....apparently not. This looks like a very clean fresh installation - and looks like all your data will be wiped! 😱 Will it still be possible to recover all your purchased apps and data from your time machine backups into Catalina? 😳
Hi! I would need an upgrade to Mojave or Catalina, as I am currently having the High Sierra ( 2011 late MacBook Pro) and Lightroom doesn't launch on it... :/ Do you suggest this not official upgrade?

When I’m in disk utility do I click erase on my memory pen or macHD
This is great . Thanks Matt for breathing new life into my 2011 Mac Book Pro . I’ve also upgraded to SSD and it’s like a new machine. It will give it a couple more years of life to it . Edit Having used it now for a day where Office 365 was ok to start with its now failing to open . Any ideas @Matt?
How is to now?
14:47 can’t get past to add the last install to get the os on my Mac mini 2009 any help???
I tried to get Sierra and can't even do THAT! But that's from the app store.
Been frustrated with Mavericks coz almost all apps are not supported and it's been weeks to attempt to upgrade. But when I watched this, Gosh, you solved my problem. Thank you so much!!!
Amazing bro it's been life sever for all the mid 2008 to 2014 mac device's you deserved applause
Does this work without a usb stick?
Yea
Does this procedure wipe everything clean or just installs over the old OS, leaving everything intact?
As I loaded Catalina to my computer hard drive, it wiped everything out. I’m taking my computer and external backup hard drive in to get everything transferred over.
whit this method I can install on my iMac 27 late 2009?
max ender hi, yup it sure will. Is that the core2duo 27 inch iMac?

@@MattTalkTech mine is please help
Hi @@MattTalkTech, Thanks for the comprehensive explanation and given great details in your video tutorial. I watched your video have followed your given steps up to the 16:45 all went well then moving bar under the apple logo stopped towards the end and my MacBook Mid-2009 bricked! Obviously this not your fault and I am not blaming you in any way shape or form! This totally my fault! Whatever known command I have tried; I either ended up in seen a "NO ENTRY SIGN" / "PROHIBITORY SIGN" or a "FLASHING FOLDER WITH A QUESTION MARK" on it! Took the MacBook to Apple Genius Bar in Trafford Park in Manchester I was told that either my SSD or Flex ribbon cable that connects the SSD to the mother board was faulty? But I have changed both of them; still same problem exists?
I would like ask you kindly if there is any way you know how to install El-Capitan again on my newly bought SSD by inserting it into a caddy and using my Windows O/S since my MacBook is not accessible at all?
Thanks very much for your help and response even though you don't have to do so?
Regards
This worked! Saved me money as I was about to give up. You sir are a true #hero. Thank you.
This was super helpful thank you so much, my friend's old MacBook needed an update
So this erases everything on your computer and does a fresh install? Is there a way to just upgrade instead of a fresh install? Thank you
This sounds amazing, my question is, do I need to backup all my files separated or use the time machine to protect my files before installing Catalina?
Sonia Tello Good question - I thought it would update to Catalina and keep all the old settings, but.....apparently not. This looks like a very clean fresh installation - and looks like all your data will be wiped! 😱
Will it still be possible to recover all your purchased apps and data from your time machine backups into Catalina? 😳
Great question
How do I remove Catalina to go back to high Sierra, it’s been giving me more issues then it’s been helping
is it useless for Xcode?
Hi! I would need an upgrade to Mojave or Catalina, as I am currently having the High Sierra ( 2011 late MacBook Pro) and Lightroom doesn't launch on it... :/ Do you suggest this not official upgrade?
Thank you so much! I had just paid some tech guys to install Catalina on my Late 2011 MBP. They said it couldn't be done after taking payment. You just showed me how to do it myself in a 20-minute video. Thank you!
I assume yours was 13inch model and not 15/17inch model as dosdude makes it clear this isn't possible without serious graphics acceleration issues making the laptop unusable.
@@stevebelgrave It is a 13 inch model yes. Although I have noticed FCP will not run on it. It downloaded fine but will not open.
@@MikeMilenko Thanks :)
Thank youuuuuuuu! I can’t express how grateful I am. It took me two days to find a way how to fix this. You saved me big time! 🤩🙏🏻 Wish you all the best! 🥳

Worked perfectly. Now my 2010 MacBook Pro has a new enough Safari that I can use it on my banking accounts. I should be able to get several more years out of my MacBook. Thank you very much for this information.
