    It says right on the box under the picture of the cask on the front: NON CHILL-FILTERED

    Just got around to watching this. Great video as always!
    I feel like I really enjoyed this whisky earlier in my whisky journey. But I agree very much with your analysis now. It doesn't have much interest factor. It used to be the whisky I would use to show people how whisky can taste tropical, not anymore, though (these days it Cotswolds or Rampur).
    It does say it's non-chill-filtered though (only on the box, I don't know why they left it off the bottle.... 🤦‍♂️) In fact, I can see it on the box at 3:44 below special release.
    This just shows how you are right about the design and presentation though. Roy even though this was chill-filtered on one of his streams. They brand all these marketing words over it like; special reserve, crafted, rare casks. But make it hard to find the info we want - like non-chill filtered.

      Oops... yeah that's definitely a slip-up! Hah. Spend too much time staring at the bottle and not enough at the box. But as Ralfy says... the bottle is the contract! Cheers and thanks!

    Great review Geoff . Did I spell it right? Ironically this single malt is the only one I ever purchased and returned to swap for another bottle and never bought again. After your review I’m relieved that I may have made a wise decision. You scored it very low. What would you have scored the old 12 yr version. Sorry if you already reviewed it before. I’m on hold currently with my purchases right now. Money is tighter and the bottles get more and more expensive. I did open the Tamdhu 15 over the weekend btw. Very clean and bright. Not the typical dark fruit (which I love). However this wasn’t just another sherry scotch. I haven’t made any notes on it yet since it was the infamous neck pour. Already I can tell you even though I prefer the “old” 15 Glendronach and the 18 over this one. I would consider this as a daily sipper. Beautiful taste. Elegant but very flavorful. Really tasty and sweet but still soft. Balanced is the word I think. Glad I bought a second one. I’d put this one right now over the Glengoyne 18. That one seems to have more bourbon influence, still nice, but this is a treat.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 роки тому +1

      Glad you like the Tamdhu! I wasn't impressed with my bottle until it opened up, I hope it continues to improve.
      It's been a really long time since I had the old Nectar 12. I was never a huge fan of that one either, tbh. I'm not sure how different they are. In my mind the old and new are pretty similar, but my last bottle must have been like 7 years ago so I'm basing that on (distant) memory.
      Oh, and you nailed the spelling. 😉

    Lemon chiffon pie. I bought it on a whim and was pleasantly surprised with what I thought would be a decent 'summer whisky'. I liked what I considered 'sweet on the front with a dry finish'.

    Hey Geoff! In case you are interested they state it on the webpage again that it is 10+2 years old and non-chill filtered. Thanks for the very accurate review. I agree with you here on some missing strong character, however the Sauternes profile is there but on a rounded, friendly way. 🥃

      @@Gwhisky Yesteday I liked the Nectar actually quite a lot, it is a clear step up from the basic stuff, maybe a bit too pricy step up tho. I only have the QR 12 years old atm and it has definitely more depth and grip. The 14 is there on the list of course🥃

    I'm drinking the Glenmorangie Nectar 12 years old release as I'm watching your review. I love the sweetness, the fruit and some spices in it and sometimes I add couple drops of water to open up the flavors . I haven't tried the Glenmorangie Nectar NAS and was wondering if there is any difference in taste between the two. Thanks for the review.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 роки тому +2

      I haven't had the older 12 in a few years, but in my mind the flavour profile hasn't changed much. If you like the older 12 you should enjoy the new one too.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 роки тому +1

      If you liked the old version you should get along just fine with the new version. If memory serves, there isn't a huge difference in the profile from the old one.

    My Scotch journey started with a Glenmorangie core range gift pack of four 100 ml bottles. I’ve had a sweet spot for the distillery ever since but, like many, wish they released craft-presented bottlings. Thanks for the review! Agree that the 10 year old is a better value. Although even the 10 year old price has been creeping up lately.

    question is... do you or have you drank sauternes before? i think this is a great compliment and totally get wine in the finish

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 роки тому +1

      I don't drink it often or buy it, but I've certainly had it. I do taste the addition of the wine notes, but personally I'm not a huge fan of Sauternes finished whiskies in general.

  • @pharmdiesel
    @pharmdiesel Рік тому

    I understand the cost due to what I waould guess would be the lesser availability of Sauternes casks. However, the flavor profile (in my opinion), does not necessarily justify the extra cost. It is OK, and yes I like it, but when I decide where I am spending my $, it is rare to choose it. I am enjoying it now.

  • @smashexentertainment676
    @smashexentertainment676 3 роки тому +1

    It's sweet, but far from any Pedro Ximenez or Oloroso finish I've tried so far and has a typical sour wine hint, that's why I'll be picking up a couple bottles of Sauternes to see if it's the wine that brings it out. A touch too spicy/harsh for my taste, but not because of ABV. I got few cask strength bottles (57%+) that go down real smooth. Overall I think it's my fault. My expectations were just too high and somewhat different for this bottle, it's a pleasant drink by all means, just not what I expected.
    Btw, by exploring whisky I learned so much about wine xDD
    Too bad A Tale of Cake was so limited that it's gone. Forever. And Tokaj Azsu cask finishes in general are almost non existent.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 роки тому +1

      Not sure about Azsu specifically, but we've had a Longrow, a Benriach, and that's about all I can remember. I'd love to try more Tokaj finishes. I've enjoyed them more than most sauternes!

    Glenmorangie is now into mass-marketing with numerous new releases, mainly aimed at the traveller. Their prices are LVMH level and not for the Scots who love their standard Glenmorangie 10 and the core range. Volumetric expansion for the market requires more casks to be filled. They are obviously tight for casks.
    In this case, they first use the standard 10 YO ex-bourbon casks for maturation. The Sauternes casks that follow are a mix of "used" casks that go to 3 and 4 years resp. It is not cost-effective to send the Sauternes casks back to a French cooperage for refurbishment; the locals can't hack it, so the casks that were freed after the two-year stage up to 2021 are just opened up into their staves and refitted after shaving the wood on the inner side up to the in-drink level. The NAS is forced by older casks, not younger. That is why this NAS whisky costs more than the 14-YO. It is also a poor cousin of the Nectar D'Or of yesteryear.

    When one wants a departure from the standard sherry or port finish, this is a good, sipp-able whisky to share in a small gathering.
    Not much of a difference with the older bottlings (maybe the older ones had a more tannic note akin to overbrewed tea). The finish was disappointing in this one as was the mouthfeel. This is a bottle I would gift to the newly initiated. Good introduction to light whiskys that do not need a lot of furrowing of brows but on the other hand does not get you excited either.
    The Goldmember reference cracked me up. And now I have visions of fat bastard doing his thing. Thanks for that imagery!
    Cheers!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 роки тому

      Agree. Good for beginners as it combines “scotch” flavours with “sweet” flavours. But as far as I'm concerned the Nectar d'Or commits one of the most egregious sins in whisky-being largely forgettable.

      Quite an interesting opinion! I did find this Nectar'r Dor a bit too sweet, sugary sweet at that. Plus the bitterness was to heavy and all in all it felt like a young whiskey to me. Okay but not spectacular. I guess an average rating would do, 55/100. Quite sad that they've dropped the age statement and are selling for the same price as before.
