Therapist and Vocalist React to Killpop - Slipknot

  • Jake Luhrs, vocalist of August Burns Red, and Therapist Taylor Palmby analyze the lyrics of "Killpop" by Slipknot. They discuss how the song paints a picture of a painful cycle that many people get stuck in which is believing they constantly have to prove they are worthy of love. This performance-based cycle becomes a prison that feels difficult to break free from. The song provides the answer to this which is breaking free of the prison and practicing self-love.

      Interesting how, even in psychology, context is important... Without said context your interpretation is pointless/useless. An important lesson for any field... That said, I appreciate the approach even if it falls short. Progress is desired over perfection.

      I dont believe him. Hes said that since the 90s on many songs. The music industry doesnt exist anymore. No one cares about radio play. That's just Corey's answer. To not get vulnerable. My opinion of course

    The song is my reflection on my relationship with music. That's who the 'she' is. And not just music, but the music industry in general. So there's a love-hate relationship there that really kind of comes into view." Corey Taylor

    I love this song. I have now watched your video on it 4 times and I get something different from it every time. I told my 16 year old transgender daughter to watch it because of the relationship she has with her dad. Your channel has helped me so much. I love the music, lyrics are so important to me and I love the way you put a therapeutic spin on them. I think your channel is helping me more then my therapist is. I'm in recovery and it really helps to find an outlet for feelings besides just the meetings because not all my feelings have to do with drugs and alcohol. Thank you for heart support

    Watching this I realise I have been on both sides of this. Being in a toxic relationship doesn't necessarily mean either person is toxic just the situation. There was one party so interested in me it was embarrassing and I finally realised I was being unfair (the attention was nice so it took a while to realise what I was actually doing) then there was another party I really liked being around but they clearly didn't feel the same way but kept me in contact just enough to make me think the was a potential something. I figured out both "relationships" were toxic to me in pillar opposite ways and to them respectfully. It's kind of a hard pill to swallow but I see it now.

    Absolutely, our will and therefore intent determines who we become not necessarily just the environmental circumstances that we live through. They will most definitely affect you but you don't have to let yourself become them. I find when we're hurt and want to be hurt for any kind of reason it's usually because we are validating for ourselves to take the blame and wallow in that realization rather than confronting and challenging it.

    • @Sarahlouisseize
      @Sarahlouisseize 2 місяці тому +2

      Also when Corey says "Die and fucking love me" you could say he's singing it about himself or more specifically that part of himself that hated himself. That what his journey is about and by this point he was well aware of that. The first two albums from Slipknot is the wallowing in the hurt pain and using it as a fire to let yourself burn in. After the passing of Paul Grey the group as a whole was kind of forced to see parts of themselves that they were ignoring or resenting and you can see them accepting that ugliness through the next 3 albums with less direct themes of death and more just relatable depressive thoughts and mindsets. To give people hope because they weren't given any and they know how much you have to struggle to find those answers on your own.

    I've always heard, "just love yourself." I fully understand how beneficial that could be, but how do I just start loving myself, when hating myself is all that I know, and therefore, my most deep-seeded defense mechanism? If I hate myself, no one can hurt me more than I hurt me... How do I overcome that?

      I totally relate. My self hatred had kept me from being harmed by outside opinions. People try to insult me and harsh me, but they fail miserably and it absolutely drives them nuts. Is that bad of me to feel OK with them having no power over my self perception? Can't hurt me at all, Only I hold that power.

  • @KNETTWERX

    The song is a metaphor about his and the band’s relationship with the music industry. For example you create a song that you work hard on and you truly love. Then the industry changes parts of the song until it is unrecognizable from what it was. Now they can’t put out a song whining about the music industry or tearing it apart, so they used a metaphor so they can express their rage about it. It is a very common thing for them and other bands to do.

    Killpop is the only song that helped me understand myself, I have not related it to relationships or whatever, but my whole life I struggled to get better cause in order to do that, one must first be able to accept and understand oneself, right? So.. in short, this song helped me understand that I'm happy when I'm capable of helping others, saving them from themselves, while at the same time, I'm also most happy with myself while being in the middle of a phase where I'm most self-destructive. And I can take it, so much that it scares people. Which is incredibly counter-intuitive. So I just like to also mention that, this song, to me, is more about the relationship I have with myself, within myself vs towards others than in any other type of relationship.

    There are actually two girls in the video and instead of having identical makeup they have opposing makeup so that when they stand side by side they look like separate people but when they face each other they are reflections of each other, which illustrates for everything the band loves and hates about the music industry (which the song is about) they are self-aware that they are the reason why the relationship continues. They hate it for what it is, but they love it for what it gives them. Which can be applied to romantic relationships as well for obvious reasons. It reminds me of the concept of twin flames; which is a Vedic belief that soul mates who are meant to be together by divine providence are separate people and even when they do not seem to be on the same page they are actually a reflection of each other and the only reason why they don't realize it is because they both have their own preconceptions about the other person. Allowing their own egos to constantly get in the way of their connection, and no, I am not talking about the stupid "Twin Flames" MLM cult either.

They have destroyed about 5 careers and some more are coming. Trust me on this topic. They are humble ppl but when someone even tries to poke them, they will create tsunami that washes opposition away. Dr.Dre is also an perfectionist. From ThriceTheThird: @jacobware3281 Feel free to share more, if you ever want/need. <3

    • @HeartSupport
      @HeartSupport  17 днів тому +1

      From Micro: @jacobware3281 Oh friend, you are surely not insane in any way. What you describe is that you are struggling, and what is says about you is only that you're a human being trying tofind their way in this world. Being called insane would be somehow stigmatizing, and you certainly don't deserve to have that type of label put on you. You didn't choose to struggle or to have a depression. It's absolutely not your fault, and in no way it would ever define you or your worth. It's a hardship that happens to be a part of your life, although it doesn't define who you are and what your soul is made of.
      It's understandable though that it feels somehow like being insane, and maybe therefore inadequate in this world. I've personally been struggling with a high functioning depression and complex ptsd for most of my life, and these definitely make me feel a lot of times as if I am some kind of outsider. Somehow too broken, somehow unable to fit in, somehow not equipped to be "normal" and live a "normal" life - or at least what looks like it. It's really hard when it feels like you're carrying unwanted burdens in your life that prevent you from the being the person you want to be or doing the things you want to do. It is this giant wall that places itself between you and the world around you, making you feel alone and profoundly isolated as a result.
      Depression speaks many lies, and one of them is often to make us believe that we are not good enough, that we are worthless compared to others. That this invisible wall is also something impossible to control and impossible to heal from. It feeds on the despair, hopelessness and helplessness it adds into our own world, and it's really hard sometimes to separate it from who we are. For a long time I've personally felt like building my identity around my struggles, and it's a trap I've been having a hard time to get out from. I don't know if this is something you've been experiencing yourself, but I would imagine that sometimes it must feel like you're profoundly alone with this and that nothing would be enough to help you keep your head above waters.
      What your statement says about you, my friend, is that you are a freaking warrior. Navigating in this world while dealing with a depression can be pretty wild. It's too often stigmatized, not understood enough, not seen enough either. It's a tumultuous journey that too often we are forced to explore just on our own. There should be more support, openneness and understanding when it comes to depression. In any case, your efforts are seen and understood here, even if they might remain invisible to the eyes of most.
      I don't know if you have support in your life, but you certainly deserve to have some and to feel connected to people who are safe to you, who would see YOU without any judgment and without any fear.
