Therapist reacts to One By Metallica (ft. Jake Luhrs)

  • Therapist, Taylor Palmby, and August Burns Red vocalist, Jake Luhrs, analyze the lyrics of Metallica's "One" to discuss how even someone's one-in-a-million story can be relatable to all. The pain that someone goes through when expressed can make others feel not alone and the journey to triumph that someone goes through can be used to inspire others to continue on.

This is Metallica's first video and it helped my mom and I connect more. It came out when I was in high school, listening to heavy stuff like this that my parents didn't get. But when I showed my mom the video, she remembered watching the movie when she was in high school. We sat and watched it while I told her the lyrics and she explained the movie. One of my better memories.

When this video came out no one had seen anything like it before. Most people who saw it had never HEARD anything like it before. This was mainstream culture's introduction to Metallica. To this day I think it's still one of the most stunning pieces of audio-visual art ever created.

Glorification of violence!? That's an interpretation that most headbangers would probably disagree with.
Most metal bands write their songs from a neutral point of view as though they're reciting historical facts, not opining from a certain political mindset.
Sounds to me that you just like to demonise anyone who has different beliefs or opinions than yours.
So much for inclusivity and diversity.

I was deaf, blind, unable to speak, and crippled for 12 days after a seizure that nearly killed me. It felt much longer than 12 days as time slowed down. I can confirm it is terrifying. The scariest part was when I started getting my hearing back and hearing the Dr's talk about me like a slab of meat. I was an "Interesting Specimen," and they brought in groups of student Dr's and Nurses to run tests on me without my consent. I overheard one ask another if I was a registered Organ Donor which was fucked up. I could hear but couldn't communicate. Thankfully, I found the willpower to fight through it and learn to walk and talk again. It's been 2 and a half years and I'm about 95% healed. Hopefully, this time next year, I'll be normal again. Never take your life for granted.

idk what people are spazzed about... I'd love to be trapped in my own head! Oh wait, nvm.. I could never win an argument, or on the bright side I guess, I'd always win?
But joking aside, I never did understand this "isolationism" that people are tested and trained for/against for science on long space trips. They must not have met anyone in, or ever heard of jails/prisons... at times you could be in a 6x10 cell up to 23+ hours a day for weeks or months on end.

There's a live performance of them performing this song on The Howard Stern show and James opens up about the lyrics, about his struggles with mental health during his teenage years which inspired the song. They found the movie for the video and intertwined them beautifully and even bought the copyright for the movie to make the video easier to show.

There were a lot of 'heavy' bands active, heck this was Metallica's 4th album, but this was arguably the first metal song to cross over into the mainstream in such a huge way. There were a few videos that featured movie clips, but they were almost always from soundtracks, This is one of, if not the only, video that I've ever seen that interweaves movie clips in a narrative way. Easily one of the best videos ever.

It also brought much needed attention to wounded veterans & the necessity for both physical & mental health. A Metallica fan since high school in the 80s, such a library of iconic tunes. (Do you plan on doing any classic rock or 80s rock? Hope so, I’ll keep an eye out)

As a die hard Metallica fan from the start in 83. This was so hard to digest at first because we all thought it was not as heavy but it took about the fourth time listening and i realized i had to grow up like the band was. Depper subjects and slower rhythm's.

That particular song touched me a lot from the moment I first heard it, even before I knew its meaning, especially from the first time I saw the video, at that time I was only about 12 years old... Now I'm a retired soldier, I was in the Army for 20 years, and I saw many comrades lose legs and different parts of the body and now that I'm no longer in the Army and I see the video again, I feel it more personal and it gives me a lot of feelings of sadness for my fallen friends.

      From djstarion: @jofoloco22 Hello friend,
First of all thank you so incredibly much for your service. I couldn't even imagine some of the things that you and other warriors have seen while deployed. I've heard many stories like yours remembering their fallen friends and comrades in battle, whether it be on the physical battlefield or the mental battlefield.
It's okay to feel sadness for your fallen friends. One of the best things i've heard from a soldier, ironically enough at a Metallica show in Chicago, was when we were leaving and it had been his first time seeing them, just coming home from deployment. He broke down seeing something that reminded him of a friend he lost just a few weeks prior. He said "The reason that flag is flying is because it's being blown by the breath of our friends lost in combat". That hit me so hard but it's 100% true

As a 10yr army vet, this song hits hard. So many of us feel this way. Trapped in the memories and pain. Wrapped in the guilt and shame. Constantly trying to find our way in a world we don't fit in. Begging for it to just stop until one day we just need to die. This is where we are every day.

From runner12: @TankakaT-- I’m so glad you reached out! I’m so sorry for the constant pain, guilt and shame you are feeling. Being trapped in memories can be overwhelming and exhausting. You may not feel like you fit into this world but I promise you that you have value and worth and purpose. Sharing your story and speaking out about what you’ve been through is so important and valuable especially to others who have been in similar situations. Please keep holding on and reaching out. This is a safe place where we care about you and believe in you and are here to support you!

From sangasugarbog: @TankakaT-- Thank you so much for reaching out, I want to let you know that you are heard, and your voice matters. I think in life, it's such a difficult thing to find where we fit in, or deal with the guilt and shame that we bear. It's a normal thing to feel the way that you do. While these emotions and feelings may linger, I promise that this storm will pass. Tripping over what's behind us can be a taxing expense, but we must continue to move forward, and grow. You matter here, and I want you to know that there are people that love you. The world is a better place with you in it. Enjoy the present, and focus on **now**. I'm rooting for you, keep shining your light.

From lu2910: @TankakaT-- I'm so sorry you're dealing with these emotions. I appreciate your vulnerability in opening up to us how you've been feeling. The fact that you have served in the army for ten years is amazing, I can't express how grateful I am that people like you have the bravery many of use do not. I promise you that despite how you feel you don't fit in, you belong on this Earth and deserve to live.
One thing I have found in dealing with my depression is that as small and futile as it is, hope is beyond life-changing. You are not a broken person; You are far from broken. The future you have is not just surviving, but living. There is hope for you, this apathy will turn into joy and you will feel whole.
You are not alone in your struggling and hurting. Peace is never something that is unattainable. Please feel comfortable to reach out and share your story with us. We are right here for you.

    • @HeartSupport

From Micro: @TankakaT-- Thank you so much for sharing about how this song resonates with you and your personal story. Trauma is a beast that keeps haunting you, and I can only imagine how painful it is for you to feel like you just don't fit in this world, and maybe somehow don't belong either. It's hard when it feels like there's an invisible barrier between your inner world and the world around you. Inside there's a storm taking place, a scream that needs to be heard, but on the outside it seems that silent remains, and your hurt is unnoticed.
I hope you will keep fighting for yourself, for you absolutely belong and matter. May you find peace, at your very own pace, to replace traumas as a part of your story, and not as something that would define your identity. You have so much beauty to bring into this world, and there is more to embrace around you. Hold Fast, friend. You're in my thoughts.

i have always felt this was a metaphor for my childhood being the 5th of 6th children i felt i was an afterthought in my family and retreated into my thoughts and feelings and kept everyone at arms length . now at my age i have suffered some tremendous heartbreak as the 3 closest people in my life all recently passed . i am now having those same feelings as my youth . somehow i’ve always been able to persevere and put on a facade of happiness.

    • @HeartSupport
      @HeartSupport  Місяць тому

From Micro: @chrispajewski1007 It's definitely special when you are one of the last children who were born in your family. If there is an important difference of age between your siblings and you it must add even more doubt and fear in your mind regarding this idea of being an afterthought. I've been myself the last of the family to be born and there's a six years difference between my sister and I. For a long time, a part of me has felt like I had to be unexpected or unwanted somehow. It's difficult when you are the little one trying to find their way in the midst of people who are much older than you. It is for sure pretty isolating and having this kind of feeling at a young age can really stick to you as you grow up.
I imagine that, somehow, retreating into yourown thoughts and feelings was really a way to protect yourself and to feel safe. When you make sure that you keep people away from you, you are guaranteeing that you're not going to be hurt unexpectedly. It's definitely something that feels like maintaining some kind of control by not having to worry about what other people could do to you. It really makes sense that this has been a way for you to cope and survive as you grew up, and keeps somehow being a survival mechanism as an adult. The perspective of not being wanted, of not belonging, of potentially being abandoned at some point is absolutely heartbreaking and scary.
It makes sense that losing this three people has also been such a major heartbreak and loss for you. It is the kind of grief that can really reactivate the wounds that we've experienced when we were younger, especially when it feels like we didn't heal from this pain or found a sense of closure yet. Somehow, it is the type of event that forces you to reconsider the ways you've been coping before because as much as it was adapted to things you couldn't control in the past, you also realize that it may not be something that would serve you in the person moment.
You don't deserve to feel like you should put on a facade of happiness or that you have to push through regardless of how you feel at a given time. It's okay to not be okay, even if saying this probably sounds cheesy somehow. You are allowed to be sad and to say it. You're allowed to feel heartbroken without feeling like you have to hide it, and for that I am very grateful that you've chosen to open up here.
My friend, you belong in this world and you matter so very much. You really do. Whether or not people stay in your life, you are not defined by them and your worth remains unshaken by these circumstances. I see you, and I'm sending plenty of virtual hugs your way today.
