There was a Greek playwright (Aeschylus) that is said to have been killed when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his bald head, mistaking him for a rock. Whether the tale is true or not is another thing, but my guess is that was what Karl read/heard and decoded it to be his Plato story.

That was in a book i've got on unusual deaths, in the comical death section. My guess is Karl heard part of it and his brain re-assessed it to a bird dropping it's egg on Plato.

Karl got a little bit confused about Plato dying from an egg.
It was Aeschylus who died from an eagle which dropped a tortoise on his head, it's a way the birds break open the tortoise's shell, presumably it mistook Aeschylus' head for a rock.
I wish the thing about birds breaking eggs to let their kids out was true 🤣

Lots of laughs on this one :) So good.
The bit about 'eyes looking back into their head' did to into a tiny bit more detail on original radio programme, but it was obviously edited out here.
In case you didn't know, Manc is someone from Manchester (England) and Karl is from there.
'Bedsit' (where the guy who slept in the dinghy lived) is a no-bedroom apartment but one that has a bed in it along with the lounge and kitchen all in one.
As you watch Idiot Abroad and get a lot further in, the prostate topic will resurface. I'll leave it at that. :)

Okay so this is one of those moments where I have repeated word for word what Karl said
I can't remember the exact convo but my housemate at uni was talking about evolution and mentioned 'eyes facing forward' and my mind went straight to 'we never had eyes facing into our head'
Now, I stick-by that being a reasonable response. Because actually, forward facing eyes isn't a vital part of OUR evolution like opposable thumbs are. They are unique to us and separate us from our closest ape ancestors.
But all our ancestors back to fish have had eyes on the front (as opposed to the sides).
I think that's a better way to phrase it too. Eyes at the front of your head.
Forward facing suggests their position is the same but orientation isn't. Where 'at the front' clearly means position
    Also:
Aeschylus, an ancient Greek playwright was killed at the age of 67, when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his head. The eagle is said to have mistaken his baldness for a rock and tried to use it to crack the shell of its prey. To add a further strange twist to the death of Aeschylus, Roman author Pliny, suggested that Aeschylus had been spending a lot of time outdoors to avoid a prophecy that he would be killed by a falling object.
    So close!

    • @jgreen2015
      @jgreen2015 2 роки тому +1

@@EaterOfBaconSandwiches again .. they are not 'part of our evolution like opposable thumbs' are.
I didn't say it wasnt important. I said not the same. Our immune system is important and without it there wouldn't be humans. But it's not a part of our evolution like thumbs are
Because thumbs are far more recent and one unique trait which separates us from our closest ancestors. But an immune system. . or binocular vision... Though important is not to the same degree 'part of our evolution like opposable thumbs',
They are a part of our evolution, distinct from opposable thumbs.
Immune system is so basic it stems back to early life and any complex life has it. It's not really part of our evolution but of evolution generally. Forward facing eyes are a part of the evolution of primates. All primates have forward facing eyes. Opposable thumbs are unique to us amongst the primates
Therefore, forward facing eyes are not a part of our evolution like opposable thumbs are. They are distinct.
But to say 'opposable thumbs is when we sawed! It's part of our evolution like forward facing eyes' does suggest opposable thumbs and forward facing eyes are both traits we acquired to become modern humans.
Put another way. . when we talk about finches in the Galapagos Islands... Their eye position on the sides are vital to their evolution. But that's not what we talk about when discussing the evolutionary traits they have developed to make them their unique species. Because ALL birds have eyes on the sides of their head. We talk about their beaks. Because it is that recent adaptation which differentiates it as a species.
Same for forward facing eyes in humans. Yeh it's important. But it's not what differentiates us from other primates. Opposable thumbs do. So those traits aren't the same.
There were primates that didn't have opposable thumbs and acquired them before becoming human There were never primates with eyes in the sides of their head who became forward facing before becoming humans.

So much of his stuff is rooted in true stories. He just never brought the dang thing in rather than riffing some weirdness. He had one about lead plates and chalices that was true based on tomatoes being acidic and breaking down the lead and also Romans using lead for piping and silverware. It ended up being something you'd hear from an excited 7-year-old by the time he said it. I mean, not that I said this well, but I drink and youtube. They really gotta make a law...

Flashing is an odd reaction to seeing someone naked through their window but I think it's unfair that they mocked him for it. I think it's quite sweet that he thought he "should give her a bit back", instead of just looking away and pretending nothing happened, it's like he thought he did something wrong and wanted to make amends for it. It's not what I'd think to do in that situation but it's stil wholesome that he thought he needed to repay the woman. It's an awkward thing to do but there's a kind of innocence behind it.

5:10 I watched a feature film yesterday which was partly filmed in my city, with the rest filmed in surrounding towns and cities, where one of the lead White characters pissed on his own right hand on purpose, and told his mate to do the same, as he knew they would be shaking hands with some Asians a few minutes later.
I later realised that the actor had a surname I recognised (and a first name which I faintly recognised too from street sign graffiti), as being a surname associated with violent crime in my city.
So I Googled his name, and found that he is from my city, and was sent to prison for 5 years in 2006, for hospitalising a man with a samurai sword attack.

@@MandyCaneLane I've since checked out the rest of the credits for that film, and saw another surname of another crime family from my city...
That second credited guy got 2 years in prison for multiple counts of burglary and crashing one of the cars he stole.
Some of his family members have done much worse crimes like acid attacks and murder.
That's at least 2 criminals employed by that feature film.
