Sweet shops would have been a big thing in UK several decades back, but have reduced drastically in numbers. Most towns (near me at least) don't have a dedicated sweet shop. Sweets would be commonly bought now in supermarkets or newsagents. Don't remember ever seeing a shop dedicated to just toffee (they probably do exist). So they were taking the Mick out of him saying he was very old fashioned.
Yep both Judges and Barristers (lawyers prosecuting and defending the case) still wear wigs in court today. It's been this way since the 17th century. It's part of the tradition and formality of court proceedings. It's quite similar to Canadian courts, but they no longer wear the wigs.
Hi Mandy, Court dress code, and in particular legal wigs, is a tradition that goes back 700 years. It all started with King Edward III in the 14th Century. In addition to robes, judges have generally worn a short bench wig when working in court (reserving the long wig for ceremonial occasions)
Yeah, but it looks ridiculous to see a 21st century lawyer in 21st century professional attire, in a courtroom that chances are is less than 100 years old, and they wear this wig from the Renaissance on their heads. What other professions do this?
I don't know why, but Mandy's reactions to ricky gervais show (even though i've watched them all over 20 times each now, more if you count falling asleep to it) - Her reactions have made me notice more about the actual animations and visual comedy in the show. Some things, because of her reaction to it, I simple never picked up on / noticed before lmao. Such as the fireman on the very tiny ladder against a skyscraper lol.
I hated that comments were removed on the last one. You should keep doing whatever you want and being honest about it. I don't always agree, but that's part of why I come here.

answer to 15:50 yes, in England, Judges and Barristers (litigation Lawyers) wear a certain white wig and robes in Kings Counsel for criminal proceedings...its tradition in England and Wales, not so much America🤣
Judges and barristers wear wigs in British court. Its traditional since late 1600s. Its about being formal and smart. Showing class. Wig wearing was very popular at the time amongst royalty and aristocrats. Though outside the court I think it was also done to prevent headlice. Wouldn't be good for rich people to be scratching their heads all the time at some fancy dinner or whatever
24:22 Five episodes in and you're already beginning to take part in the show. Quite a shift from the first one where it was just bullying (It isn't, Ricky is the weird one here tbh) Can't wait for the next one! Karl just might be a genius but he doesn't apply himself to learning anything and would rather let his imagination take over. A creative genius more than a scientific one. Pretty much all the stuff he talks about is true. At least the headline is. Judges still wear wigs, I think the tradition was born due to flagrant syphilis in the renaissance period, everyone would lose their hair, so it became a fashion statement to have an expensive fancy wig, the nobility made it a whole thing and so noble professions such as judges and magistrates continued the trend and part of their professional routine. I'm either talking absolute shite there or it's true 🤷🏻♂️ but I remember hearing that somewhere 🤔 may have even been on the xfm show 😂
The judges in the UK still wear those wigs. It is pretty much part of their work uniform... And a candy shop & a toffee shop are 2 different things. Toffee & candy are 2 totally different things. Anyway, fab reaction Mandy, believe they have talked about the cutting off heads but remaining conscious before - reality is either modern scientists running electric currents through brains in experiments trying to observe what reactions this prompts in different areas, guillotined heads grimacing after the blade was dropped or based on the stories of 1800s physician Legallois experimenting on how long body parts can function if reconnected right after separation.
The reason why wigs are worn by counsel, court officials and judges in court is because it gives the court a sense of uniformity, dignity and anonymity to all involved. The person is tried and then sentenced (if guilty) by the court/state, not by the individuals involved.
Another great reaction. :) Karls idea with the jury was that if he was a member of the jury on a mafia case then if he put them away, he might have to wear a disguise after so no-one would know who he was. So Karl's thought was to wear the disguise while you're on the jury, say "Yeah he did it" and then carry on his life as Karl cos no-one would know who he was. ;) Genius. The wig thing can be traced back to Louis XIV of France who wore a wig to hide is balding, which was associated with being a symptom of syphilis so was derided. The elite classes of Europe followed suit and wore wigs also, back when courts were basically King’s Courts. Judges and Barristers still wear the formal dress, as it’s seen as a separation between the law and the human enforcing it, though it is entirely symbolic. Judges often choose not to wear formal dress in cases where they don’t want to create an intimidating environment (such as when dealing with children). It’s just a throw back to ancient times, no more than ceremonial dress from other cultures.
Judges have always wore those wigs, for many centuries (in much of the developed world at least); In the same way any public servant would wear a uniform, they are representations of an institution, and are to be seen as such.
I never got on board with Monkey News. You can just skip seven minutes of the show and mentally add "And the twist was it was a monkey. Again." Karl's Diary is special though! 😀

Loved your reaction to this great show, like always. You made me replay Karl throwing the stone a bunch of times lol. Your reactions make the show extra funny and feel fresh even tho I've watched them loads haha. Keep up the awesome work! 🤗
It's an absolute pleasure watching these with you Mandy, best reactions by far ... & I agree with Karl 'n' Ricky, there's no way I'm eating a fish (Fugu) that can be lethally poisonous to me (no know cure for the toxin) and needs a chef with three years or more training & a special licence to prepare it, I don't know if the chef is having a bad day... nope, I'll stick with the chicken thank you 😂
They still wear wigs and not just the judges, Barristers (criminal lawyers) also wear smaller ones. This is a case where Karl is almost right, it does give a certain anonymity, it's to de-personalise the proceedings and judges without wigs (in there own clothes) look so different you'd hardly believe it was the same person.
Barristers aren’t necessarily criminal lawyers as they can advocate in civil cases etc, they just traditionally advocate in court in contrast to solicitors who didn’t (although that’s changed slightly now)
i think the chance of a shop that sold, not candy generally, but just toffee and was therefor a toffee shop for selling just toffee is a bit higher in the states probably
Yeah judges still use those silly wigs. And to defend Karl a bit, they did actually introduce them as disguises (although most judges of the time the wigs came in really adopted the look due to syphilis making most of the nobility’s hear fall out n stuff a syphilis was rife af at one point)
The head chopped off thing was brought up again in the Meet Karl Pilkington video. Most of the content in that is just repeating things from this series
In the UK high courts the judge wears wigs, I have no idea why, have never cared about it, I believe the top lawyers also wear wigs, why was because of fashion during the 17th century, it probably continued just because that's what they did. Although they would claim its respect of power and the law, but they are just kids that like dress up.
@@MandyCaneLane I was riffing on what Ricky Gervais said when he met Larry David - "The trouble I have with watching Curb Your Enthusiasm is .... I agree with everything Larry says." And great reaction as always!
At the time of recording? I mean how old do you think these shows are Mandy? lol Yeah as others have already said, British judges have worn white wigs for 100's of years, and yes it's still going on. Also, the thing about Karl is he doesn't really understand metaphors or analogies. He also has a hard time understanding progress in time, or the progress of society. So he thinks people lived pretty much the same and had the same sort of wants and needs 500 years ago as today. He also likes to anthropomorphize all animals even insects, like his tendanycy to think they have jobs and some of them are lazy and don't do enough work etc. This is why sometimes he seems childish, it's the same sort of realisation level as young childern. OHH by the way, one of the hidden gems of this show (and quite rare) are Steve's stories, watch out for them, his actually a great anecdote teller. So make sure you carry on till the end.
Well, I thought the audio recordings were like 16 years ago or something like that. And during and post pandemic many things changed for hygiene purposes, even if they don't make sense, so I am kinda surprised the wig tradition survived the pandemic 🤪😂
@@MandyCaneLane The only time that sort of thing will change is if the UK becomes a republic. The courts here 'work' for the crown. And if there is one thing the royal family is good for its tradition :P As you might be able to tell I'm not a royalist :D
A "toffee shop" doesn't mean a shop that literallly sells toffee. It means sweet shop, can be any sweets. People from where Karls from use "toffee" as a blanket term for all sweets. If you want actual "toffee" you'd be specific and say caramels or fudge etc
Even the best chefs who prepare blow fish can never remove all the toxins.Mandy try and say the word FISH but try and say it without using the letter i.

If you'd like to see Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, and sometimes Jack Black doing sketch comedy check it out. Since you're a musician, I'd also recommend the "Tenacious D" series, especially if you do like Jack Black.
Ricky Gervais is brilliant. His stand-up shows are great. He makes controversial statements that most comedians won't, including: "there are no gods" & "a woman does not have a penis".
All of that would have been true if you commented it a decade ago. XFM/Ricky Gervais Show Ricky is great, and his old stand ups are hilarious, but nowadays he is kinda laughable. His Twitter is an absolute mess, he loves himself, and his comedy is awful. His demographic is now Facebook moms.
His standup is actually pretty subpar compared to his acting and writing, as for daring topics he just say things morons spout in every pub around the world.
I love that you love these. Anything Karl-related that you watch, are my fave vids yours 😆 You've got all these, An Idiot Abroad (I'm looking forward to ep 2!!), and The Moaning of Life if you eventually get chance!! 🤗
Yeah, your getting that British vibe, excellent . the more Brit stuff you watch you find that we laugh at ourselves constantly, our humour comes from our own eccentricity's, it helps shape the great Actor Johnny Depp whose skill is not dialogue but it is moulding a character in exactly the same way you paint or sculpture. The British by living on top of each other have more complex characters, simply far more to draw from. Dave Allen's work is great to check out then if possible a contrast look at the series porridge with Ronnie Barker
Guessing you’ve never watched any British crime or courtroom dramas, then! There’s some great ones out there, as others have said, wigs are still a thing for judges and a shorter wig for barristers who are essentially courtroom lawyers (we differentiate here unlike the US) especially in higher courts
OMG I just did some searching and the monkey news was actually true again, sort of. There's an article about monkey pets being a fad in New York around 1907-1908 and a group of firefighters had one named Jenny. It even has a newspaper clipping from back then. Karl's interpretation of the story is pretty made up tho 🤣
This show keeps saying "midget" on various episodes, but the politically correct term now is "dwarf." Since so many of us have never seen a homeless Chinese person, that's a reason to celebrate, because most likely most of then are housed since we never saw them homeless. And, the Los Angeles homeless situation is getting worse and worse and worse, and it's been in news and on UA-cam that it's getting worse. Really, in too many places, but especially in Los Angeles. Lack of affordable housing, they say. I remember once doing jury duty, myself.
You ruin it for yourself a little bit when you watch the cartoons first imho. The podcasts in their original form are much better because you get the full context, e.g. the build up to the 'kick a duck up the arse' bit, it just seems to come out of nowhere more than on the tv show. The podcasts are a nice start to get acquainted with the trio. Then afterwards, listen to the old XFM radio shows and see how Karl went from not saying much at all to making up the whole show with his own features like Rockbusters and Educating Ricky. Btw, the very first 2 episodes of that radio show are lost forever.
Lmao! NONE! But I can understand it happening in certain situations for a while. My family was homeless for a few weeks when I was younger... but friends helped us move forward!

Karl's Diary is special though! 😀
😂😂
if it's true what they say that laughter adds years to your life i'm sure karl is single handedly responsible for increasing the life expectancy of millions
Laughter can certainly counter the effects that the stresses of modern life can have on us!
100%!! 😂
Most English common law judges still wear wigs, so lots of countries in Africa, plus the other usual English language countries.
Loved your reaction to this great show, like always. You made me replay Karl throwing the stone a bunch of times lol. Your reactions make the show extra funny and feel fresh even tho I've watched them loads haha. Keep up the awesome work! 🤗
I am so glad to hear that! Thank you so much Daniel!!! 🤗🤗🤗
The reaction to Karl throwing the stone was my favourite bit too XD.
Karl (facing blankly into the distance) *throw* *smash*.

Yes in the Uk they still wear those wigs. Its part of tradition and is suppose to symbolise an authoritative figure .
I love seeing my country's humour with you reacting!😀
Thank you! 🤗🤗
Great video. I also enjoyed your singing on the Avril Levigne cover. Hope to hear more in the future!
Thank you so much Keith! 🤗🤗
It's true, if you have too many options, you feel less satisfied with your choice.
Ricky Gervais in animation form reminds me of Fred Flintstone
100% Robo! People informed me that is because the animation was done by the same studio 🤪
It's an absolute pleasure watching these with you Mandy, best reactions by far ... & I agree with Karl 'n' Ricky, there's no way I'm eating a fish (Fugu) that can be lethally poisonous to me (no know cure for the toxin) and needs a chef with three years or more training & a special licence to prepare it, I don't know if the chef is having a bad day... nope, I'll stick with the chicken thank you 😂
ORANGE Chicken 😂😂😂
@@MandyCaneLane 😂 definitely ☺
They still wear wigs and not just the judges, Barristers (criminal lawyers) also wear smaller ones. This is a case where Karl is almost right, it does give a certain anonymity, it's to de-personalise the proceedings and judges without wigs (in there own clothes) look so different you'd hardly believe it was the same person.
Barristers aren’t necessarily criminal lawyers as they can advocate in civil cases etc, they just traditionally advocate in court in contrast to solicitors who didn’t (although that’s changed slightly now)
@@vaudevillian7 Thanks mate for the info.
i think the chance of a shop that sold, not candy generally, but just toffee and was therefor a toffee shop for selling just toffee is a bit higher in the states probably
Prettiest funniest girl on UA-cam💍
They make Steve appear so much shorter in the animation than he is at the start of the show. He's abnormaliy tall.
Yes! I yave seen him in other things! A proper giant!
In the UK high courts the judge wears wigs, I have no idea why, have never cared about it, I believe the top lawyers also wear wigs, why was because of fashion during the 17th century, it probably continued just because that's what they did. Although they would claim its respect of power and the law, but they are just kids that like dress up.
can't wait for episode 7 😆
Mandy, the trouble I have with watching The Ricky Gervais Show is .... I agree with everything Karl says!
It happens! 😂😂
@@MandyCaneLane I was riffing on what Ricky Gervais said when he met Larry David - "The trouble I have with watching Curb Your Enthusiasm is .... I agree with everything Larry says." And great reaction as always!
Very Good Reactions once again. Keep them coming.
Thank you Jamie! 🤗🤗
@@MandyCaneLane You are most welcome my little love doll. Ha! Ha! 👰🦸
@@RavenZahadoom 🤪
A "toffee shop" doesn't mean a shop that literallly sells toffee. It means sweet shop, can be any sweets. People from where Karls from use "toffee" as a blanket term for all sweets. If you want actual "toffee" you'd be specific and say caramels or fudge etc
Thousands of people in Greater Manchester refer to sweet shops as toffee shops, and all sweets as toffee?!
@@davidz3879 yes, toffees means sweets
@@bradders9743 You've heard many people say toffee(s) to refer to sweets in general?

Have you ever thought about doing reactions to "Mr. Show"? Haven't seen anyone else doing them. If you'd like to see Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, and sometimes Jack Black doing sketch comedy check it out. Since you're a musician, I'd also recommend the "Tenacious D" series, especially if you do like Jack Black.
Will check them out Gary! Thank you for suggesting!! 🤗🤗
@@cupafail There's a wide demographic in the audience of his stand-up shows, as well as of his fans in general.
@@Chimponaut What's moronic about using common sense & facts to hilariously oppose the powerful religious & trans lobbies?

Karl logic = Mandys logic lol 😂
Damn straight! 😎
Karl just likes difference he’s not having a go or anything😂😂😂
Yeah, your getting that British vibe, excellent . the more Brit stuff you watch you find that we laugh at ourselves constantly, our humour comes from our own eccentricity's, it helps shape the great Actor Johnny Depp whose skill is not dialogue but it is moulding a character in exactly the same way you paint or sculpture. The British by living on top of each other have more complex characters, simply far more to draw from. Dave Allen's work is great to check out then if possible a contrast look at the series porridge with Ronnie Barker
The British dont take court seriously so the judges are clowns in wigs😂. Shud probably say this was sarcasm but its not untrue
Guessing you’ve never watched any British crime or courtroom dramas, then! There’s some great ones out there, as others have said, wigs are still a thing for judges and a shorter wig for barristers who are essentially courtroom lawyers (we differentiate here unlike the US) especially in higher courts
Never watched crime anything from anywhere! I prefer to laugh than to learn what horrible acts humans are capable of! 🤪😅
@@MandyCaneLane that’s fair enough! Rumpole of the Bailey is an older one that’s pretty funny

I’m starting to think Mandy is making fun of us brits lol
Lol, why do you think that?
I was also relying on Kanye to save me.
😂😂😂 Love it, thank you!
But it was like before cameras so that’s like why they worked as a disguise
This show keeps saying "midget" on various episodes, but the politically correct term now is "dwarf."
Since so many of us have never seen a homeless Chinese person, that's a reason to celebrate, because most likely most of then are housed since we never saw them homeless. And, the Los Angeles homeless situation is getting worse and worse and worse, and it's been in news and on UA-cam that it's getting worse. Really, in too many places, but especially in Los Angeles. Lack of affordable housing, they say.
I remember once doing jury duty, myself.
Homelessness is so heartbreaking. No one should not have a home 😔😥
That’s been changed again hasn’t it to “little person”? Feels awkward to say that, it doesn’t really roll off the tongue either.
Great reaction as always Keep em coming 👍😂😂. Can’t wait for an idiot abroad episode 2 👏👏👏👏😂
Thank you Antony! Episode 2 coming soon!! 🤗🤗
Thanks Mandy 😜

All Crown court cases are done in wigs. And the purpose of them is to retain some anonymity, although it is now more symbolic than functional.

What the right amount of time to be homeless Mandy? 😂
Lmao! NONE! But I can understand it happening in certain situations for a while. My family was homeless for a few weeks when I was younger... but friends helped us move forward!
@@MandyCaneLane😂 Yes it can easily happen to anyone! I had a few weeks of it myself in Australia as a 19 year old, let's call it character building 💪
I also disagree about the "learning" think about learning how to walk. A toddler learns to walk one day, drops. Next day ater toddler is walking more, etc. Or people who wake from a coma, say that have to relearn something. Just saying.
