Exactly!! The federal government could eliminate any such events, along with countless students who carry illegal firearms to school every day simply by having metal detectors and security at controlled entries/exits. Many, many years ago when I taught at an inner city middle school, we routinely had an officer from Fulton County prison on campus every day. They were usually massive guys who towered above the kids; which would also benefit high schools when available, especially because they are there to be buddies with the students, unlike "campus monitors" with radios and/or an officer from local police who is often in charge of two or more schools at the same time.

This is why I left teaching in the public schools. So many of these students have serious mental, social, and emotional issues that the schools are not equipped to deal with. It's horrifying how many students have mental issues that are simply not addressed, or addressed with a band-aide and then sent back to class for the other students, staff and teachers to deal with on their own. It's sad and scary. And I can guarantee in it's in every school in one form or another.

But teachers are told to take care of absolutely everyone else first, leaving them in the position of being overwhelmed by demands that never stop, that in fact grow each year. Kids need teachers, I totally agree. But teachers aren't automatons; they're human beings that need to have the overarching pressure taken off. Fully 1/4 of all teachers currently teaching say they won't be back next year. Telling someone their reason for wanting to leave is "weak" is not a solution. A woman that has a child with the suspect's father, stated that the parents always gave him his way and anything he ever wanted. They were aware there was something off about him and he displayed all the classic symptoms of an at risk teenager. The suspect's mother was the one who wore the pants in the family, according to this woman and she encouraged him when he requested a gun for Christmas. And of course days before, she posted pics on her FB page of the two of them at a shooting range together. They also have texts messages from the mother to her son when he had gotten in trouble at school cause a teacher saw him drawing photos that were suggestive of him committing violent acts at school, telling him that she is not mad at him and he just needs to make sure that he doesn't get caught drawing them or with them in his possession, so he doesn't get in trouble. The parents having met with the school officials that morning and declining the school's request that they take him home with them, apparently using the excuse they had to go to work, is just another reason for this already troubled kid, with clearly no responsible adult upbringing, who had reportedly stated he heard voices and had reached the point of even writing notes asking for help, to feel even more rejected by his parents and grow even more angry. The fact that the school did not DEMAND they take him with them and remove him from school property makes them just as liable if you ask me. The parents should have been told, we don't care where you take him so you can go to work but he CANNOT stay here at the school as we have a responsibility toward every person on this property to ensure their safety. If they still failed to take him, police should have been called to escort him off of the school property and to his home or better yet to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. The fact that they just sent him back to class which resulted in all of this happening, with full knowledge of the danger they were putting every person in that building in cannot be overlooked. Not taking responsibility away from the shooter at all, just saying that I'm glad the parents who were clearly negligent in this situation, in more ways than one, have been charged and I hope to see that school system in court as well, sued for their negligence
