That's a tough call... it probably depends on my mood at the time. Sometimes I'll prefer the darkness of the Disturbed take on the song, other times I prefer the soaring, almost joyful harmonies of PTX. On balance, given that I'm a huge Pentatonix fan, I would probably lean towards their version of it.
I refuse the challenge. Simon and Garfunkel, Disturbed, Pentatonix--all three give masterful performances. And each arrangement is iconic in itself. Yes, the PTX version was probably influenced by Disturbed's, but I don't see it as a cover of it. I'm keeping--and loving--all three, thank you very much. (There's something magical about Art Garfunkel's voice, though . . .)
It's been said many a time that Simon & Garfunkel's original was meant to be a warning, Disturbed's version was anger that we didn't heed the warning, & Pentatonix's version holds hope that we will overcome. When you listen to each version with this thought, you can both hear & feel it even though the lyrics are all the same. My personal favorite is PTX because I literally feel the hope. Glad you enjoyed as always!
If you want a real treat, check out Pentatonix's version of The Prayer. Scott sings in his low baritone and he sings in Italian. It is one of their best covers to date in my opinion.
I have recommended he check out The Prayer and Amazing Grace. As good as Pentatonix is.. everything they do is a 10/10.. but some songs are just a 11/10
I really have to recommend their cover of "kiss from a rose". Theyve all come so far with stretching their ranges that they swap parts and you never know who will be singing what octave. Its incredible.
@@SirHairless Just... whatever you do, skip their new version of Hallelujah. It is... not good. Their first one is absolutely stellar however, if you haven't heard it already.
So many reviewers seem to miss, or neglect to mention, two things that you pointed out: The point where Mitch seamlessly takes over the melody line for Matt at the top, and that Scott seamlessly takes over the bass line. One thing that always stood out for me (because I *love it*) is Scott's change in timbre at about 2:17. Is it just me or does it change in the middle of the word Vision--from breathy to more...what's the word?...full? Solid? At any rate--I wish he sang like that more often. Two things I love to hear: Scott in his lower range and Mitch in his lower range. You mentioned Kirstin's vibrato--I seem to remember reading somewhere that she has been working very hard on mastering her vibrato.
This is probably my favorite (or at least top 3) Scott performance in any of their songs. His vocal versatility is so impressive and I could listen to him sing deep all day 😅
For an indisputable cover of a cover, check out Pentatonix' "Mad World". The song was originally by Tears for Fears and released in 1982. In 2001, Michael Andrews and Gary Jules completely reworked the poppy beat and almost Caribbean flavor to become the slow, haunting melody most people are familiar with today. That version was used as the theme song to the movie Donnie Darko. Pentatonix clearly worked off the movie version.
Once again your reaction just amazes me. How easily you pick out such details on the first listening pass is just amazing. And your detailed breakdown of showing who is singing each part is great. But I still love just watching your face during your listening part. Your facial reactions as your listening just shows each part of something that stands out to you. Great Job As Always!!
I was one of your viewers who recommended PTX’s cover of The Sound of Silence. I was so excited and happy when I saw your reaction video pop up in my UA-cam feed. I loved your reaction/analysis to PTX’s The Sound of Silence. It’s one of my favorite PTX covers they have done.
Scott always takes the bass when Avi or Matt sing the melody. I saw them live at Hollywood 2022 for the first time and this song was amazing. Have seen them live 4 times the past 2 years. As a singer myself, they are just so incredibly amazing!❤
Love to see you being more and more comfortable in your videos! Like we're getting to know you a bit more during the growth of your channel, both in terms of you as UA-camr and your personal perspective in music. I loved the details you plucked out of these performances and the fun you seemed to be having during this reaction sesh. Thanks for being our online music-friend! Keep up the good work 💃💃
I've never thought of this as a cover of Disturbed's cover. Instead it feels like Pentatonix took a lot of Disturbed's intensity and restores the S&G melodies. Also, thanks for illustrating the complex rhythms and key change.⬅ On a side note, I cannot believe I watched their video 3 or 4 times without really noticing the lens flair. Now I cannot not see it.
I agree. I've never once heard this referred to as s cover of disturbs cover. Ptx always refer to Simon and Garfunkle when talking about this song. Ptx definitely added the melody back that disturbs gritty version took away.
There are very, very few reactions I don't hit the forward button at least once, but I've come back to this reaction a couple times and never skip a second. Thanks so much for reacting to PTX and sharing your personality and knowledge with us.
I love it when you analyze a song. You hear so much that I don't hear at all. Amazing! Thank you, for your reaction! I ask myself when I listen, what am I missing?
Great my friend!! Always love your explanations! Our ladies barbershop is super busy with performances this time of year. Nice to spend a moment listening to your eloquent teaching!!! Blessings from Louisiana!
🤩👍 I was waiting for a PENTATONIX reaction Scott is a vocal chameleon he is a natural baritone but covers bass when Avi or Matt have a lead then he hits SUPER HIGH falsettos then there is the soulful riffs and runs . There is still SO MUCH to discover from this ICONIC group and their extremely IMPRESSIVE arrangements. Sometimes in live performances Kevin has a stomping pad. I LOVE Kirstie's AMAZING vibrato it's so seamless. Also Scott's latest solo gift "Rose Without A Thorn" was nominated for a Grammy🎉 Everyone of them SLAYED!
Your facial expressions are priceless. Loved this and thanks for the breakdown. Check out Amazing Grace by them. One of my favourite versions I've ever heard. The Prayer is also on my listen list. Its incredible.
For me this one isn’t a cover of Disturbed, just PTX being themselves. BTW, this song (when first released) was the first time I had heard Matt sing a melody solo. I was HUGELY impressed and relieved as I was finally certain that the group would continue to thrive sans Avi. As usual, I really enjoyed your reaction.
Scott in the past has often covered the base when the normal base is singing lead - especially live. I heard him sing the base part live during their performance of Hallelujah when Ave was singing his verse. He has a beautiful voice with a very wide range. ❤
I love what someone said under the Disturbed react that Simon and Garfunkel were the warning, Disturbed the anger, and Pentatonix the hope version of the song...so cool ti see them back to back
In “Problem” Kevin vocalizes “one less problem without you” while also beatboxing, so I believe he’s perfectly capable of singing and beatboxing on alternate beats.
And he does it live, too--except that in live performances, you can't here the "s" at the end of "less." Pretty impressive, though, that he can whisper (not "sing," I would say) and beatbox at the same time.
@ yes, when I referred to the “Problem” performance I deliberately said “vocalized” since he really isn’t singing. But Sir Hairless was wondering if he was alternating beats between singing and beatboxing and I was just saying I think he likely could.
Personally, I think the only reason that many people have said that PTX's version is "a cover of the Disturbed cover" is because of how low Scott starts the song off. We don't often hear him singing solo in his lower register. The only other song I can think of off-hand where Scott starts off singing this low (or nearly this low) is The Prayer, which is highly recommended for a little bit closer to Christmas, even though (once again!) it's not really a Christmas song. But other than Scott singing low, there's nothing in this version that reminds me of the Disturbed version. The "growth" that you mentioned at the end is something that PTX does in almost all of the songs they do - it's more of a PTX trademark than "covering" the Disturbed version, as far as I'm concerned. To me, it's simply another cover of the original great song, but with a Pentatonix flair. I'll be moving over to Patreon after I finish with this to hear what you thought of the live version from the Hollywood Bowl!
Yeah like you say growth happens a lot, in many performances. Such as in Disturbed's cover 🎶I do see structural similarities but I'm not here to try and change anyone's opinion. The point of this video is Pentatonix and their work
One reactor did the original, Disturbed and then Pentatonix's version. He stated Simon and Garfunkel were soundjng a warning. Disturbed was anger the warning was not heard. And Pentatonix was the hope.
You just gave me a enormous Christmas gift. 32 seconds after you posted this hubby heard me literally scream YES! Absolutely no arguments. Pentaholics are mostly loving people who are just so greatfull for this quality of reactions. You are going to be more and more amazed? by Scott's voice. He really has shown so much growth. O and my Mitch!!. You are sp appreciated. Greetings from South Africa ❤
YESSS IVE BEEN WAITING FIR THIS ONE!! i love every single one of your reactions, you always point out things that i hadn't noticed before no matter how many times I'd heard the song lol. plus i love hearing your singing voice when you sing little parts 🫶
I like this version better than Disturbed's. I really love Matt's voice, it's butter. And Mitch always give me chills with the passion which he sings it. Great analyse as always, Sir!
Wow! THAT was complicated! Mind blowing, but absolutely beautiful. Even though I do not understand the complexity of knowledge that you are sharing with us, but LOVE listening to you! I always admire someone (as yourself) who is an EXPERT in his field. Thank you, Sir Hairless! 💗🇺🇸
Scott sings the bass in Hallelujah while avi or matt sings their part. You can see it alot in a live version with avi when their singing a Christmas special
scott is super underrated! he takes over the bass and the beatboxing when he needs to! he formed two acapella groups, hes written a book, he makes beautiful arrangements, his range is INSANE, i could go on lol ive been a scott girl for over 10 years, im almost 25, and i could go on and on about how underrated scott is in ptx
I know I know nothing about music, but the depth and breadth of your knowledge reminds me each time the vastness of what I don’t know. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for these interesting reaction... Great to see what else you can figure out and hear. Your reaction is different from other people doing music reactions. I like that.... 🙏🏼👍🏻
For me, one of your most interesting reactions. It's reassuring that even you struggled with the parts at the beginning of this one - I've never been able to work out who's singing what, there. The section about the rhythms was very interesting, as well. I've always thought this was one of their best arrangements, too. Great reaction, Sir Hairless, thanks.
Wow, I love the way you sound when you do your singing parts to show us what their doing. You sound so good. I love Pentatonix. ❤ I'm so happy you reacted to them today.
Yesssssss finallyyyyyyy This is your second video of the four ‘epic’ PTX songs as I like to call them. The first is Can you feel the love tonight, which is really like a massive saga with ever changing sections with a gorgeous Mitchslap as the final touch. I really enjoyed watching your video on that. The second is Sound of silence with I am so happy you finally did it. I’ve been excited the last two days actually since you did Disturbed’s version. It’s a really powerful arrangement without no one in particular standing out, but results in an amazing culmanative force. The third is Hallelujah, which I believe many other people would have recommend already. It’s easily one of PTX’s most popular songs, with some distinctive features as Scott’s bass, Kirstie’s belting, and (spoiler) a nice Mitchslap. It’s such a beautiful song, little bit less intense than Sound of silence, and bit more emphasis on the melodic beauty. The last is Prayer, which I see other people are already recommending. It is probably the song I consider as the most beautiful song by PTX. Just think of it as their cover of Imagine but even better. Kirstie really stands out in the song I think. I will bet any amount of money that it will give you goosebumps all over. Thank you so much for this video, and I hope you enjoy the other two epics in the near future!
$$$$ ... you've earned your $ 1.75 on this one Sir Hairless ! Pentatonix put you on spin cycle with their masterful singing. Really hard to say which impressive part is my favorite in this piece, but I think Kirstie 's entry with the chord change is the stellar moment. I felt that Kevin was so important also with his excellent percussion!!! Really great breakdown Sir. What a blessing it is to hear these five musicians together. TY 🎧🐒🎧🐒🎧🐒🎧🐒🎧🐒🎧🐒
I remember when this video dropped... it was the first I'd seen with Matt instead of Avi. Must have listened to it fifty times. Matt brought a whole different dynamic to the group. Loved Avi, love Matt... they are just different. Check out Amazing Grace, you won't be sorry.
Scott is a Baritone. He and Avi used to switch parts depending on who had the solo. On Hallelujah, when Avi is singing the lead, Scott is singing bass. He can’t go as low as Avi or Matt, but his range is impressive to be able to cover Bass to Tenor.
Thank you once again, Sir. I read a comment somewhere that ‘your favorite Pentatonix song is the one you are listening to!’ To me all music is the gift and I receive it gladly. I think you do as well.🎵
Always a pleasure to watch your videos! As per your request for requests: Mr Grinch (for the season). Again, there's great live performance options as well as the official video.
Reminder: please listen to Celtic Thunder singing, "Sound of Silence." It is sung by Keith Harkin and Colm Keegan. It is very close to the Simon and Garfunkel vetsion!
Always love your PTX R/A. I don’t think I appreciate another group as much individually and collectively. I enjoy all their solo work and collabs with other artists but together? Their arrangement suits their voices and the song. They have fun admitting they are choir nerds and so am I. Always lovely. Thank you. 🤗
Hey Sir H - beautiful analysis and great reaction - as always! I also watched your Patreon live performance add on - very impressive all of it!🤩👌 I found PTX on your channel and liked them straight away and got to know them and admire them greatly....and I don't like heavy metal at all....yet, for some reason, surprisingly, the Disturbed version moved me a lot more! Strange that! 🤔Thank you again for your truly fabulous reviews Sir Hairless, splendid stuff!! ❤🙏💫
I’m surprised to see no one recommending Aha! (Singapore live version) it’s one pf my favorites! You should also react to Hallelujah, Rather be and Light in the Hallway (original)

I have always felt bad bc I rarely hear Scott when they are really blending. A friend of mine told me that was a good thing bc he is blending really well, so thanks for confirming it. I have waited forever for a reactor to show me the piano keys bc if soneone says thats an E5, I have no idea what note that is. Thank you so much 6:11 I hope the second time you talk about Matts final note. So excited. Going back to the reaction.
Glad you've seen Scott here; will wait for your reaction to hiscover of Red's "I Should Tell Ya Momma" impatiently. This is my favorite cover of SOS, still faithful to the original, as well.
Excelente análisis como siempre. A que estamos, podrias reaccionar a la versión de Forestella 😅😅 nunca es demasiado con "The sound of silence" podemos escuchar todas las versiones
I've always felt that Disturbed's version of the "Sound of Silence" communicates to me a rather dark/angry impression while PTX's makes me feel a somewhat cautionary hopefulness but that's just my opinion. Would love for you to react to the most recent Pentatonix version of "Oh Holy Night." Christmas isn't far away!🎅
Love this version. Imo, Disturb's version equates to dispare, while PTX elicits hope. Of course, it is a matter of personal preference. From someone who heard the original by Simon and Garfunkel when released, PTX is my favorite cover. I just love harmonies. Thank you again, for sharing your insight on this amazing group. Look forward to much more. 😊
Sometimes, there's something to say about not not using any brainpower with PTX. Just sit back, relax, and let the experience envelope you. But, as always, I enjoyed your analysis.
Thanks! My channel wouldn't exist without using any brainpower 🤯 As much as many people would rather I said nothing and just watched the video, it wouldn't help with the channel's progression
@@SirHairless Absolutely, I appreciate your hairless brainpower. I do not care for the reviewers whose contribution is "Wow, that was great." Keep up the good work but, sometimes, just chill out on your own - if you don't already. 😀
I love this song. I remember asking for the "Wednesday Morning 3 am" album for christmas in 1966 when I was 9. As to which song I prefer, the Disturbed version is much darker and I think correlates more with the lyrics while the PTX version seems much more hopeful and almost joyful and I love both versions. While they are the same song, they affect me in totally different ways almost like they are two completely different songs. I'm just really grateful that we have such diverse choices and I think it's a testiment that art in all forms is subject to the interpretation, imagination, and experiences of the consumer.
IIRC PTX's cover (of the original) actually came out before Disturb's version. They weren't covers of each other, they both hearkened back to the original and put their own spin on it.
I'm not sure how your video of Disturbed's version of this song landed in my feed, but I'm very glad it did. Firstly, I'm now looking forward to going down a Pentatonix rabbit hole, but I'm also really enjoying your genuine reactions, coupled with the technical analyses. I will definitely be subscribing.
Well you hooked me into Patreon with that live reaction. Couldn’t resist. 🤪 I’ve seen them live several times. Scott goes off script more than the rest of them IMO. I don’t know if they plan it or not but they’ve been singing together so long, they seem to easily adapt to it. I love their live performances because I can always hear their voices so distinctly. Ed Boyer, their studio mixer, does a good job not totally blurring their sound. Sometimes layering their vocals melds their sound more than necessary. Again, I’m biased towards their live performances. PTX’s version to me has some of the flavor of the Disturbed version but it is much more uplifting. Mitch and Kirstie use their lower range in their solos but their upper range for the backing vocals. I love that combo. Great reaction as always. I find it so interesting how different artists interpret songs. PTX always surprises me.
Sir has to do a collaboration with Charismatic Voice and build this channel to the prominence it deserves. Always learn something new when watching here. "Bass Scott" was introduced in Hallelujah when Avi took over the lead and Scott immediately filled the bass line.

The point of this video is Pentatonix and their work
I would have never came up with Kirstie's key change but I it's my favorite part of this arrangement.
❤
YESSS IVE BEEN WAITING FIR THIS ONE!! i love every single one of your reactions, you always point out things that i hadn't noticed before no matter how many times I'd heard the song lol. plus i love hearing your singing voice when you sing little parts 🫶
Love these version so much ❤
Ive never seen a reactor spending so much time to find kevin in the blend. And few notice scott takes the bass for matt on lead.
It's usually not this difficult I was determined😅
I like this version better than Disturbed's. I really love Matt's voice, it's butter. And Mitch always give me chills with the passion which he sings it. Great analyse as always, Sir!
Scott covers the bass line when the bassist is singing lead. I first noticed him doing that in Hallelujah.
Wow! THAT was complicated! Mind blowing, but absolutely beautiful. Even though I do not understand the complexity of knowledge that you are sharing with us, but LOVE listening to you! I always admire someone (as yourself) who is an EXPERT in his field. Thank you, Sir Hairless! 💗🇺🇸
You expressed what I came here to say😀
We NEED Hallelujah!!! Please please pretty please!!!
Scott sings the bass in Hallelujah while avi or matt sings their part. You can see it alot in a live version with avi when their singing a Christmas special
Love this version
I love your reactions! ❤
scott is super underrated! he takes over the bass and the beatboxing when he needs to! he formed two acapella groups, hes written a book, he makes beautiful arrangements, his range is INSANE, i could go on lol ive been a scott girl for over 10 years, im almost 25, and i could go on and on about how underrated scott is in ptx
Matt brought a lot to this group ❤
What to say.... Great reaction, Sir! Wow!
Another great reaction
For me, one of your most interesting reactions. It's reassuring that even you struggled with the parts at the beginning of this one - I've never been able to work out who's singing what, there.
The section about the rhythms was very interesting, as well.
I've always thought this was one of their best arrangements, too.
Great reaction, Sir Hairless, thanks.
Wow, I love the way you sound when you do your singing parts to show us what their doing. You sound so good. I love Pentatonix. ❤ I'm so happy you reacted to them today.
Been so excited for this one!!!!
0:26 There it is!! ❤❤❤
I’d love to see you check out some of Scott’s solo stuff!
Probably the most thorough breakdown I have heard 🎉
Yesssssss finallyyyyyyy
This is your second video of the four ‘epic’ PTX songs as I like to call them.
This is also such an amazing cover of the song! Love it, Scott is so impressive here... Thank you for another great video! ❤️
I knew it was Kirstie because in their vlog she was warming it up. Good job identifying it.
$$$$ ... you've earned your $ 1.75 on this one Sir Hairless !
Such great reactions you give...
This is an excellent song and Analysis
I love this version ❤ it's my #1
The Original and the Disturbed version are both #2
Thank you for doing this
I’m surprised to see no one recommending Aha! (Singapore live version) it’s one pf my favorites! You should also react to Hallelujah, Rather be and Light in the Hallway (original)
Awesome Reaction!
They also sing Imagine by John Lennon; Queens Bohemian Rhapsody. They also have original songs.

I would suggest you back to Simon and Garfunkel, and then decide between the versions. Loving you channel, I’m learning a lot!
It's sooo good yes!
Excelente análisis como siempre. A que estamos, podrias reaccionar a la versión de Forestella 😅😅 nunca es demasiado con "The sound of silence" podemos escuchar todas las versiones
펜타토닉스도 제가 좋아하는 그룹이죠~~^^
Forestella please~~~
그들도 이 노래 커버했어요😊
둘 다 들어보신다면 너무 좋을거 같아요❤❤
I believe Disturbed was 2015, PTX was 2019 😊
I'm not sure how your video of Disturbed's version of this song landed in my feed, but I'm very glad it did. Firstly, I'm now looking forward to going down a Pentatonix rabbit hole, but I'm also really enjoying your genuine reactions, coupled with the technical analyses. I will definitely be subscribing.
🙏 Thank you
Well you hooked me into Patreon with that live reaction. Couldn’t resist. 🤪
I’ve seen them live several times.
