Catalina, already stunning with grace and beauty. Now she's a queen. Too bad she couldn't end her career on a high note in Rio. She's such a strong athlete and came twice out of retirement to help her country.

They didn't do that this year. Really takes away from the drama and buildup. Now they just flat out switch from swimming straight up to Gymnastics, go to the venue, and the routines start. You don't have time to really build up a story or get into it before it's already well under way.

I loved it too... But man, i just can't stop chuckling at the little digs the NBC announcers just can't seem to resist making towards the Russians, ya know, with their "Tempermental Queen & Aging Coach." With more recent years it has been constant comments about how Russian gymnasts have "lost so much of beauty & their artistry" & all the descriptions of Aliyah Mustafina's personality being "very 'strong & unique ' " & saying how she's "a diva." (Oh just come out & say what u mean already!! you're saying she's a bitch, lol)
      Real cute guys....

As much as I love Russian gymnasts, it always bugged me how they say "for over 50 years the RUSSIANS have set the standard for excellence" instead of Soviets... many of the top performing gymnasts in those days weren't Russian...two of the previous Olympic Champions were from Ukraine. The Unified team in 1992 had Tatiana Gutsu(Ukraine)Tatiana Lysenko(Ukraine)Svetlana Boginskaya(Belarus)Roza Galieva(Uzbekistan)Oksana Chusovitina(Uzbekistan). They were one of the strongest teams in history.

At the time of the 1992 olympic games, Chusovitina was from Uzbekistan. She later moved to Germany to get treatments for her son who had leukemia. Because of the generosity that she received she eventually decided to represent Germany at the olympics. The first olympics that Chusovitina represented Germany was the 2008 Beijing games. She was on the unified team in 1992 and represented Uzbekistan at the 1996 Atlanta games, 2000 Sydney games, and 2004 Athens games.

back then, each skill you performed had a value and all your skills would add up to your starting vaule with max of 10.0 then the judges would then take there deductions from there, so if your start value was a 9.8 for ex, then if its perfect max score would be 9.8 now, witht the A and B scores all your skills add up to a value like 6.1 for ex. then the execution judges then take deductions from 10.0 then add in the 6.1 so if done perfectly your score would be a 16.1

This is one Olympics where the USA team coming in as the World Team Champions hurt them more than it helped... Romania and Russia were greatly improved from the year before, and I think the USA being the favorites may have made them a tad overconfident and impacted how they picked the team and created a lot of added pressure... There was no way to predict McCool would have the meltdown she did though... A fully healthy Chellsie Memmel might have made a huge difference also... When you factor the bad luck with those things plus the injury Kupets had, silver is not actually a bad result...

@SkateNater I do see what you mean. However, just because you train in Russia doesn't mean you're Russian. I believe Nemov trained in the U.S. for awhile as did Boginskaya... they still represented their countries. Also, the Russian team never won a team gold medal up until last years world championships. In contrast, the Soviet team won almost everything. I just meant that it wasn't all Russian over the years and that's what the American coverage made it out to be.

Start value at this time was 9.8 for a DTY. Judges are looking for form such as if their legs are kept completely straight threw the whole vault and if they don't cross their legs, if the gymnast has completed the twists/facing the horse when they land, if they are standing upright completely when they land or if their chest is folded over, how far they land from the horse, and if they land center or have traveled towards the border lines.

18 years later and I still think McCool should've been given a second chance. They had bigger meltdowns in the TF (Patterson's UB, Kupets' FX).
I still don't think they would've won (come on, Romania was untouchable in 2004), but they would've closed some of the gap:
    - UB over Patterson (probably +0.3)
    - BB over Mohini (probably +0.1)
    - FX over Kupets (probably +0.2-0.3)
