Samantha Mathews my apologies to them 😅 But seriously, it actually says a lot about how she felt about the power she had over these young girls. “Let’s invite the tv channel to show a few girls trying not to cry when I’m crushing their dreams”
I agree, 2012's was the most fair way of announcing the team for everyone, both gymnasts and fans. The new team members were sent right out onto the floor to celebrate in front of the crowd while those who were not selected were able to deal with their feelings in private. It's so, so sad to see those who were not selected here have to sit calmly for the cameras.
Why do they have to show this? I can just feel the crumbling hurt and disappointment resonating from Hollie. Why did they zoom so close to her face? It was so unnecessary.
I don't disagree with the procedure, I disagree with the televising aspect. The difference between this sport and say football, is that the Olympics are every FOUR years, whereas the Super Bowl happens every year. There's a lot more on the line
For most of these 13 gymnasts their careers in gymnastics did not end here. McCool, Kupets, Newby moved on to compete for the University of Georgia. Hollie Vise for the University of Oklahoma, Terin Humphrey, University of Alabama, Liz Tricase, Allyse Ishino and Carly Janiga, Stanford, Tasha Swikert, UCLA. Memmel was the 2005 World All-Around champion and a member of the 2008 Olympic team.
That’s true, but even after all her endorsements dried out, she never went back into the sport again due to back problems. She never competed even once after the Olympics:(:(
@@pme8370 Olympic gold AA is more successful than any of the other accomplishments. Even if Carly never breathed in another gymnastics competition, her one medal still holds more weight than a World or NCAA title
I. Did. Not. Like. how they focused on Hollie at the moment when we knew she had been overlooked. Then they did the same thing to Jordyn years later. Unnecessarily cruel.
I often wonder what kind of competition she would have had in 2004 had she not beeen injured. If she was healthy doing all around i think she would have been on the team for sure. In 2008 it was really nice to see her get the medal she so deserved, just disappointing that she didnt get to do more than bars there. Ugh. So many what ifs.

Marta said that if Nastia was of age, she would've been on the team without any question. She was literally beating all the seniors Sorry, just had to say that. xD

Lisa Vega Because the US would never do such a thing. And in the US, celebrities are really in the spotlight, just like how Nastia is in the spotlight right now. Everyone would find out her real age immediately, whereas countries like Romania and China keep things hidden.
***** The point was that Romania would fake ages, not because she's saying that she's Romanian. Same goes for the Chinese team - they would've just said she was of age.

The Us team made a lot of breaks on beam, bars and floor. Memmel would have been a much stronger choice on many of those events, because she could have filled in for Kupets, who was injured and we could have pulled her off beam and floor, two of Memmel's best events.

Because substitutions cannot be made after 24 hours prior to the beginning of the prelims. That's also why Peszek was not replaced when she rolled her ankle right before prelims in 08 - it was too late.
@tmwalkerm It's a rule. Like say a team picked 6 all arounders for prelims, but then only put in specialists for 3 up 3 count, when those gymnasts could have qualified the team the first day because they only each train 1 or 2 events, that rule is in place to force countries to have all arounders on the team, and event specialists, but to put more emphasis on all around because that is the basis of the sport. Unless she had gotten hurt she couldn't have been replaced
Vise had been steadily declining all year and would have contributed nothing. Her back was shot already and her bars had deteriorated. She couldn't vault and FX was a joke. So please tell me how she was an All-arounder and a good fit for that team. I swear most of you have never even watched gymnastics before. Marta made some bad decisions in this quad but it wasn't in picking this team. It was in alienating and not nurturing the immense talent she had (Postell/Tricase). Memmel was injured (of course) so that's why she was not picked. Tabitha Yim was injured as well. They would have been on the team before Hollie. It was all a moot point anyway because no matter what, I believe the Romanian team would have still been the victors.
Here is the thing, with gymnasts that have extreme flexibility in their backs, like vise, they usually dont last very long bc it gives out, and they start having major problems very early. Take Kristi Phillips for example. (sorry about the spelling of her first name, have no idea how she spells it), she was supposed to be the next mary Lou, but she faltered too early. I can guarantee you that both vise and Phillips have alot of pain and problems now with their backs.
@Huskyowner2007 I agree... but at the time Alicia only had a double twist, and got her Rudi at training camp. I dont think Marta would put her in if it wasn't perfected.
I totally agree! Unfortunately, for 2016, they're going back to the selection camp after Trials procedure. I just hope they don't announce like this ever again.
chellsie memmel was injured for beijing and also injured before athens (at selection camp from memory, correct me if im wrong anyone). i've heard of gymnasts losing confidence there too, despite being already named to the team. selection camp seems more stressful than the actual olympics itself! im disappointed she's going back to the old process for rio. but i guess they like to keep things not so transparent.. which is their call i suppose, but disappointing all the same.
Definitely less emotion between the girls who made it in this video than at trials this year. I like the new process more when they announced the girls at trials right after the competition. I also liked how the girls cried when they got in! That really showed that their dreams came true!!
i preferred the announcement/trial procedure this year. it was more special for the gymnasts and the viewers. so glad marta couldn't put the girls in selection camps, this way the girls are a little fresher and have the confidence longer before the games.
@kakumei77 she wont have too. Lets face it next year the us will have a strong team. If previous years are an indicator the team will probably be Wieber, Raisman, Bross, liukin (lets face it us need a bars specialist) and sacramone if shes well enough if she isnt it will moste likely be Maroney
@GAGALOVER347 Really? I like Alicia because she can help with vault and floor in the team competition and Allyse has the body lines that the Europeans / international judges like.
@ferdyspears Mccool wasn't injured. She faltered in prelims and Marta didn't want to risk using her. Athletes can't be replaced merely because they performed bad in prelims
i wish it would but i wouldn't hold my breath :( even if marta goes favouritism will reign. nastia is still the athlete rep, and along with valerie, WOGA will be having the most input into team selections etc.
I respect Tim Daggett a lot because of what he's done as a gymnast but this team was not as good as the Magnificent 7. All seven of the gymnasts in 1996 had been on at least 1 world team, three of them had previous experience at the Olympics. Miller was the reigning Olympic silver medalist at the time; there was a crap more experience in 1996 then these kids had in 2004.
That’s Marcia Newby at 9:09. I believe you meant 8:53 behind Chelsie Memmel. That’s Liz Tricase behind Chellsie! That’s a crime she never made it to the Olympics! She did so well on all around!😍😢
Well let's see how this worked out: The team wound up losing the gold medal. Hatch didnt add anything to the team except for a vault medal. I think Memmel could have made more of an impact for the team. I agree with not taking Vise or Schwiekert. I think Tabitha Yim would have helped had she been healthy
E Long I would say over Annia Hatch or Courtney McCool. Neither did much, but at least Annia brought home an EF medal, but the team gold would have been possible with any of the others
I remember reading that this team did not get along much at all. They were jealous of the athletes that won the most medals or had the most individual success and the most successful athletes on the team were treated as outcasts.
It's interesting how people keep questioning who was selected each year, when since this began we have won the AA each year since 2004 and won back to back team golds.
@Huskyowner2007 I like your selection... but I think Alicia definitely did not to be on the team. Way too inconsistent. I would replace her with Annia Hatch, and maybe replace Allyse with Mohini Bhardwaj.
I always wonder why marda didn't replace mccool with memmell in team finals. If she knew she was gonna sit her she should of replaced her and at least given herself an option when kupets went down. The deepest group of gymnasts ever. To bad they could deliver when it counted.
someone always breaks in selection camp, whether it be physically or emotionally. it clearly hasn't worked in favour of gold in the past. im fairly sure jordyn was injured at the ranch just before the olympics too. i think they are just put through so much more than gymnasts from other nations (im not american, but i think the selection process for the US girls is INSANE. so much depth!)
metsedudenj interesting how you say Humphrey as alternate when she medaled on Bars higher than Kupets. People argued this fact about her and she proved from being the alternate in 2003 for the World team and also through the 2004 competitions she was worthy of being on the Athens team.
E Long true - she got quite a bit of publicity because of her Pamela Andersen sponsorship, more than for anything spectacular gymnastically. The way her name was pronounced is still funny, though!
+E Long well she was the only US gymnast to make floor finals in the Olympics and she filled in for Kupets on Beam when for some reason she couldnt do beam because of her foot but she could do floor -_-
The US depth was substantially diminished. Memmel, Postelle, and VIse were all injured. I don't think there were any other brilliant floor workers. Uzelac, Yim, and other strong power gymnasts were injured too.
this was the biggest joke of a team ever. from what a hear, there was a lot of politics going on. carly and courtney squared had to be taken, because courtney squared qualified at trials, and carly was the only person capable of contending for the aa title in athens. annia hatch? seriously? she was brought for one event. and who on earth leaves at the home the reigning CO-WORLD CHAMPIONS on bars???
Because she sometimes does in my opinion. Example: Leaving Courtney McCool out of the 2004 Olympic Teams Finals COMPLETELY so she couldn't compete on Bars let alone Beam. Yes she had a bad day one and we didn't know how she would react to competing day two. But she was one of our top three on bars. Carly should NOT have been on Bars day 2 and she would've been a better replacement for Kupets on Beam than Bhardwaj. Instead Marta wrote her off for a possible better chance at the Team Gold. Well we all know that didn't work.
Letissiaskatetapes24 They still placed 2nd though...and considering what the USA looked like the previous 6 decades I think her and the selection committee does a great job.
+Letissia Scott Well I would not put a gymnast who had a meltdown up for a final which is 3-up-3-count. I think the bad decision was putting her on the team. Her beam connections would never have been credited outside the USA. Her bars weren't that much better than Patterson's.
I blame the U.S. judges for overscoring McCool rather than Marta for that one. I have no doubt Marta would have left off McCool if she could have, but the Trials rules that year were that the top two were guaranteed to be put on the Olympic team barring injury. It was a contractual agreement that Marta could not unilaterally breach unless USAG wanted to be exposed to a lawsuit. Showing readiness meant injury-free really. I think McCool didn't compete in finals because she wasn't in an emotional state to compete after preliminaries and apparently cried all night and distracted the other gymnasts on the team as well.
Letissia Scott there’s no way they would’ve sat Carly on any event. I do think they should’ve let Courtney go instead of Mohini on beam but by that point she wasn’t suited or warmed up so it wasn’t an option. Apparently McCool had a major breakdown after prelims and I think that was more to do with it than what happened in the competition. And honestly, she would’ve been fine with the beam issue but her goof on floor was ridiculous. I think that was the nail in the coffin.
I wish Tabitha Yim didn't injure herself right after trials. I think she could have been a great contender for the team for her FX and beam. She may have ended up taking Terin Humphrey's spot (which would have been unfortunate as I liked Terin...if only McCool was not in the top two at Trials, then she could have been left out instead), but her dance combos on FX were never in doubt and she could have scored higher than most of the other American girls there. The U.S. really lost the gold on beam and floor that night.
This is so upsetting considering what we know now about the ranch.

im disappointed she's going back to the old process for rio. but i guess they like to keep things not so transparent.. which is their call i suppose, but disappointing all the same.
Yes, I kind of wish they only showed the reactions of the girls who made it
Tudo funcionar por cara, nem sempre a melhor é que elas conseguem ter a empatia.
Who is the girl at 9:20?
I wished Liz had gone to the Olympics
poor hollie, i feel for her
@Jesusfreak28532 No not Hollie, the girl at 9:09 - 9:10 who's being consoled by a coach
@GAGALOVER347 Really? I like Alicia because she can help with vault and floor in the team competition and Allyse has the body lines that the Europeans / international judges like.
@ferdyspears Mccool wasn't injured. She faltered in prelims and Marta didn't want to risk using her. Athletes can't be replaced merely because they performed bad in prelims
love!
yes
i wish it would but i wouldn't hold my breath :( even if marta goes favouritism will reign. nastia is still the athlete rep, and along with valerie, WOGA will be having the most input into team selections etc.
Thank god that this didn’t age well 🥴
Liz Tricase should have made the team! She was awesome on all around!😨😍
Which gymnast is that at 9:09?
That’s Marcia Newby at 9:09. I believe you meant 8:53 behind Chelsie Memmel. That’s Liz Tricase behind Chellsie! That’s a crime she never made it to the Olympics! She did so well on all around!😍😢
Well let's see how this worked out:
The team wound up losing the gold medal. Hatch didnt add anything to the team except for a vault medal. I think Memmel could have made more of an impact for the team. I agree with not taking Vise or Schwiekert. I think Tabitha Yim would have helped had she been healthy
Ashley Postell belonged on this team
yes definitely over Mohini
E Long I would say over Annia Hatch or Courtney McCool. Neither did much, but at least Annia brought home an EF medal, but the team gold would have been possible with any of the others
It wasn't televised like this in 2008!!
I remember reading that this team did not get along much at all. They were jealous of the athletes that won the most medals or had the most individual success and the most successful athletes on the team were treated as outcasts.
you can't sub a person in in the middle of the Olympics, even for an injury, and definitely not because you're second guessing your picks.
Martha really blew it on this one. Except for Carly.
yeah totally bro
Poor Hollie Vise, a beautiful gymnast, like many was plagued by injuries
This was 2004 but almost looks like it was from the 80’s with some of those ladies hair styles and glasses. !! Lol
It's interesting how people keep questioning who was selected each year, when since this began we have won the AA each year since 2004 and won back to back team golds.
WickedlyMe328 this team didn't win gold tho lol
Adam Travis so? Your point? I know some one who was on this team...
@Nunovurbznzsodontask I never said they won team gold in 04, moron!
poor hollie :(
Why Memmel was not selected?
she was injured.
To bad they could deliver when it counted.
carly patterson always reminded me of a pre-train wreck amanda bynes lol.
someone always breaks in selection camp, whether it be physically or emotionally. it clearly hasn't worked in favour of gold in the past. im fairly sure jordyn was injured at the ranch just before the olympics too. i think they are just put through so much more than gymnasts from other nations (im not american, but i think the selection process for the US girls is INSANE. so much depth!)
@tmwalkerm sorry I meant to say could NOT have qualified the team first day
I would have sent: Patterson, Kupets, Bharwaj, Memmel, Hatch, and Humphrey with McCool and Schwiekert as alternates
metsedudenj interesting how you say Humphrey as alternate when she medaled on Bars higher than Kupets. People argued this fact about her and she proved from being the alternate in 2003 for the World team and also through the 2004 competitions she was worthy of being on the Athens team.
Oops I saw you had her on the team, my bad.
lmao mixing up Sacramone's name with the city of Sacramento at the end. Got a good kick out of that xD
I'm not saying "what ifs" I'm saying and my point was that they made a mistake on choosing the team.
"Mohini Ba-hard-warj" xD
She was a very meh pick for me.
E Long true - she got quite a bit of publicity because of her Pamela Andersen sponsorship, more than for anything spectacular gymnastically. The way her name was pronounced is still funny, though!
+E Long well she was the only US gymnast to make floor finals in the Olympics and she filled in for Kupets on Beam when for some reason she couldnt do beam because of her foot but she could do floor -_-
US had such depth other gymnasts would have made the finals too.
The US depth was substantially diminished. Memmel, Postelle, and VIse were all injured. I don't think there were any other brilliant floor workers. Uzelac, Yim, and other strong power gymnasts were injured too.
They all look terrified sad and happy at the same time. It’s sad:(
Yea true,, but its the way it is in any sport,,as a matter of fact in anything in life,, got the winners and the ones who did not win,,
If McCool made it to the 2004 Olympics why didn't she compete? What happened to her?
tREXrules27 she competed in prelims but had a bad showing so she didn't compete in the team finals
5:32 tim dagget hahaha
Damn, this was 10 years ago!
iamkarenh now 12!
99miyah I'm glad they don't announce the team in public first. It broke my heart to see their dreams crushed.
if you want to feel old, it’s 14 now wow
Kupets also got Gold on beam in 2002 Worlds
That was Ashley Postell not Kupets
Your right Kupets was bars not beam. Sorry my mistake.
this was the biggest joke of a team ever. from what a hear, there was a lot of politics going on. carly and courtney squared had to be taken, because courtney squared qualified at trials, and carly was the only person capable of contending for the aa title in athens. annia hatch? seriously? she was brought for one event. and who on earth leaves at the home the reigning CO-WORLD CHAMPIONS on bars???
And yet Courtney and Terin medal on UB at the Olympics
Why do people think Marta makes bad decisions? We've put an American on the podium in every team and AA since 2001.
Yep, and so did Courtney McCool.
Yim would not have helped. She was overrated and wasn't even close to world class back then...
update
@xGymCouture hollie vise
Carly Patterson is not impressed!
Carly knew how to not show emotion. Until she won. Then it all came out as it should have .❤️
Really? They are doing that for 2016?Thats going to be a little harder!
Whoever thought this was a good idea with so many of these gymnasts being young teenagers?
