Nope. Ever since using ACV haven't had an issue in 6 months

How many time a day you take ACV? Thank you
I changed my diet dramatically after a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. No more sugar or almost nothing with any form of sugar in it. Haven't had a single episode of heartburn in just over a year now. I was and am still amazed. Don't want to put the good doc out of business but give it a try folks.
Helps so many things Steve. Congrats. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Cutting out sugar and carbs was the best treatment for me. I had heartburn and reflux for years. Totally gone now for over 2 years and off meds.
Cutting out the FAT was key for me. Sugar is pure carbohydrate and is an essential NUTRIENT. the fat we eat is the fat we wear
Yes same here. I had the worst GERD or IBS for years. I quit grains, sugar and I've not had any issues in over 4 years.
So what i should cut guys all off cut something and feel better
I think this is the best channel going! Informative topics, great Docs and thanks for Dr. Aryhat (sp)… a topic near and dear to my Heart ♥️ (burn). Always so reassuring to hear what I have found first hand. I’m in Victoria (BC) with a great Gastro Doc. Long standing moderate/severe GERD (confirmed through hose in the nose tests) and I’m a lifer on PPI’s but no damage found on gastroscopy and on recall for one every 10 years. Stomach valve doesn’t quite close and not a surgery candidate because of weak swallows. Regardless, life style can be key. I hike, I yoga, try my best at food intake but I love chocolate and green tea. Ah well, the PPI and Gaviscon work quite well for me. Thank you for this video. For those that haven’t … SUBSCRIBE. These Docs are Rock Stars!
Thank you so much Cheryl. We love Victoria - such a beautiful city. Glad you have what sounds like a sound strategy. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Give up sugar in all forms. Learn all the 160+ names and get it out of your diet. Heartburn will disappear. No chocolate, no more medicine.
I had GERD for years. Gave up all sugar and carbs, haven't had it since. No heartburn, reflux, or bloating whatsoever.
Yes sugar and white flour can be a problem 1Corinthians. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
This topic hits very close to home. My mom passed away after a year long fight with esophageal cancer. Her only symptom was difficulty swallowing food. I have silent reflux and my only symptom is cough and increased pghlem production. Daily pantoprazole has helped a lot. So definitely seek treatment if you are having this problem!
So sorry to hear that Linda. Thanks for sharing your story. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I had "both" inspections done the same day...I made a point to remind the gastro guy to not mix up the tools! Nexium a day keeps the heartburn away...thanks for the great info!
Or at least make sure you do the upper first Dino! Thanks for watching and subscribing
I’ve gone to the hospital several times thinking I was for sure having a heart attack before finally being diagnosed with GERD. I’ve had my esophagus stretched in hopes that would help my swallowing issues. I have also switched to decaf coffee and that has helped a lot. Great video Docs!!
Best of luck K. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Swallowing issues? I'm no doctor, but this does not sound like GERD. Difficulty swallowing can indicate B12 deficiency, which suggests that insufficient IF (intrinsic factor) is being produced by the parietal cells in the stomach (pernicious anemia.) Please confirm your B12 status and supplement as needed -- low B12 is nothing to mess around with!
Why did it feel like you were having a heart attack. Because if the pain?
@@jrod2422ify yes, my chest was hurting really bad. Dr said that acid reflux symptoms can be similar to
a heart attack.
After many prescriptions of PPI nothing seemed to work for me until I read a book, The Plant Paradox. Basically got rid of all processed food, 90% of grains, some particular vegetables. Never had heart burn again and to my surprise never had a headache again. Totally gone! I haven't taken a med in 2 years. It is a tough diet to follow especially when you have "social" pressure around with people enjoying the traditional western meals but overall it is great to feel good.
Thanks for sharing Raf. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I would welcome more videos on GI problems e.g. Diverticulitis, IBD, IBS, etc. There are meds available for these, yet the underlying causes for a sudden onset are not always apparent. Knowing which condition is likely based on symptoms would be helpful - like the way Dr. Mike Heffernan discusses heart issues. The role of the gut has been more significant then we thought - even with mental health.
Agreed Goldies24. Looking to get Dr Arya back for a host of topics. Thanks for watching and subscribing
My mother self diagnosed heart burn, took antacids but did not speak to her doctor. Died of a heart attack during her sleep. Her chest pain was an undiagnosed heart problem. See your doctor if you have chest pain.
Oh no helend222. We are so sorry to hear that. Very true. See your doc. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Another nice video from “Talking with Docs”. I wish they had spent a little more time trying to differentiate heartburn from possible cardiac chest pain. Typical “classic” heartburn is ofter worse when lying down or after a big meal, and usually occurs at rest, and sometimes is associated with a bitter acid-like taste in your throat or even a chronic cough or hoarseness. But, burning chest discomfort may be cardiac in origin, especially if it occurs with physical exertion, and you have risk factors for heart blockages such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and significant family history for heart blockages. So, if the latter applies to you, you may wish to consider an evaluation with your local cardiologist, especially if you are middle age or older.
Dr. H, the heart dr.
Stress is a big factor. I know some people think it's old fashioned thinking, but it's true. There is nervous gastritis.
We would agree. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Stress can be a factor. But it's a minor factor. Visceral fat due to being overweight or obese, or a hiatal hernia, are by far the main reasons a patient might suffer from GERD. The above-mentioned foods that may trigger GERD are simply triggers, not causes.
I love your videos. You speak so we can understand. Thank You!
You are very welcome Barbara. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
2 months ago my doctor said I had slightly elevated blood sugar and cholesterol. I decided to loose some weight. My goal was 15 lb. I cut out all factory foods, sugar, bread, baking. I’m eating lots of meat, vegetables and fruits.
I haven’t had one episode of heartburn since I started this diet and as a bonus I’ve lost 8 lbs. so far. With me it’s definitely carbs.
That is awesome Pat. Congrats. Thanks for watching and subscribing
That was a great video!!! I suffer from reflux for almost 15 years, I take medication twice a day but still use Gaviscon PRN. I’m going to speak to my Dr. about getting this test. Thanks docs 😃

Let’s not forget reflux can be life threatening. I had it so bad meds didn’t touch it, so I carried the economy sized maalox with me at all times. I also had to sleep sitting upright. One night I must’ve slipped down too far, refluxed, and woke up choking on it. I had a terrible time breathing as I had aspirated and my throat almost closed completely. Needless to say, I had surgery for it shortly after that and I have been able to drink OJ and sleep in a horizontal position since.
Wow Elaine. That’s scary. Glad you are ok. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Your informative videos are very much appreciated. Thank you. Would you consider a future topic to be on the medication Prolia, which treats osteoporosis? Rheumatologists say it is a game changer. Dentists say they can't do dental implants on patients being treated with Prolia but rheumatologists say they are misinformed. As orthopedists, you probably have an interest in this treatment, too. Thank you!!
We can certainly add it to the list Susyn. We have a lot of patients taking Prolia. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Eat a radish or 2. It really works! I eat a radish almost daily & have not had heartburn since I have been doing this.
Aww, you always make my day!! Great topic as I have severe heartburn. Used to take Nexium daily, but am now on Milan-pantroprazole daily and get endoscopy every 2-5 yrs. Dr. Missiuna sends his regards, he said you two are funny😁. Stay safe docs 🙏

I have suffered from chronic gastritis and oesophagitis for over 35 years and I have a gastroscope every two years. I take Losec every day and my doctors are always surprised at how inflamed my oesophagis and stomach is each time they scope me. Never had they said anything about the possibility of me getting cancer. I am now concerned that I might need to get a scope more often since I am high risk.😊 I have changed my diet and treat it seriously but I didn’t know about the mint chewing gum. I chew gum all day, sugar free, of course but I have peppermint flavoured. Another change I will make.
Wishing you the best of luck
Trigger foods
Some people choose to avoid common trigger foods, such as coffee and chocolate, to alleviate GERD symptoms. However, this approach has little clinical backing, while results vary between individuals.
Some common trigger foods may include:
- chocolate
- mint
- carbonated beverages
- acidic drinks, such as orange juice and coffee
- caffeine
- acidic foods, such as tomato sauce and citrus fruits
- spicy foods
- alcohol
People with GERD may choose to try eliminating each food type from their diet to see if their symptoms improve. If symptoms do not improve, they can incorporate the food type back into their diet.
In 2022 guidelines for diagnosing and managing GERD, the American College of Gastroenterology suggests avoiding trigger foods to help manage GERD symptoms. However, they also state that there is little evidence to support this recommendation.
Foods that might worsen GERD or reflux esophagitis symptoms include:
- meat, which tends to be high in saturated fats
- oils and high fat foods, which may cause the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus to relax, and also slow down digestion
- high glycemic index foods, which are typically high in refined sugars
Milk
A 2021 reviewTrusted Source examined the relationship between cow’s milk allergy (CMA) and GERD symptoms in children.
The researchers found that children with CMA often experienced symptoms of GERD after consuming cow’s milk. Ongoing research is examining whether this also applies to adults. However, CMA is rare in adults because many allergic children develop a tolerance for cow’s milk by the age of 6 yearsTrusted Source.
The evidence for a link between reflux symptoms and milk is mixed. Some studiesTrusted Source even suggest consuming milk is associated with lower rates of nonerosive reflux disease.
However, people who experience regular discomfort or bloating after eating dairy products with cow’s milk may find that eliminating them from their diet reduces these symptoms.
Thanks for sharing. Elimination style diets are commonly used in trying to find relationships between food and symptoms. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Every body is different. I can eat all of the above without any problem. But black tea is a real problem; I had to give it up entirely. My advice for sufferers is simply to experiment, and see what works for you.

Hi Docs! I’ve had acid reflux since the 90’s. I had a positive Ph probe test so I had a Nissen fundoplication in 2001. It’s helped a lot until 5-6 yrs ago. Now my EGD’s show red inflamed esophagus and stomach. My esophageal manometry is normal, two years ago it wasn’t. I’m on Dexilant and that helps. I really have to watch my diet. Thanks for the info. Regular exercise helped a lot. I struggle with heartburn after radiation and chemo for colon cancer so it is a concern. I also take pain medication for a spinal injury that is sublingual and that causes acid reflux. It got worse after I gained weight from the steroids administered with the chemo for nausea. My doctor prescribed medications to reduce acid and to coat the stomach before eating. That helped me get control of it so I could concentrate on changing my habits - no alcohol, no coffee, no eating after 6pm, no sugar, no red sauce as with spaghetti. I can’t say it loud enough - *get a colonoscopy if you are over 40 or showing symptoms of digestive issues, bleeding, etc.* I had signs for two years but Covid restrictions made scheduling a test very difficult so I just let it go. The polyp grew into a tumor. Don’t procrastinate. *Please!*

I've been on Omeprazole since 2003, had ablation in 2015 for pre-cancer. I'm checked every year from 2015-2022. Now they want to go 5 years which I feel is too far out. I also have gastritis. The gerd still continues. Is there something better than Omeprazole and is this a lifetime of taking medication? Any suggestions?
Sorry to hear this. The PPIs seem to be th best we have and often are lifelong. Removing food triggers helps some but often there is no specific cure. Best of luck
Another wonderful video. I used to have to crawl to the bottom of the bed, slide head down to the floor so the acid stuff would drain out of my bronchial area and then suck on my partial Tums until I feel asleep. Went far more vege and stopped eating after 5PM . Now my heart burn is only alcohol use related.
Thanks I'm dealing with this presently.

My Dad started with severe reflux that complicated his lung issues. Then went into Barrett’s Esophagus. Ended up with stomach/esophageal cancer. Luckily it was caught in time. They took out 4 inches of his esophagus and a 1/4 of his stomach.
Wow Laura. Hope he is ok. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I've had GERD for years! I had an endoscopy and he took a sample of my stomach. It was some kind of bacteria, which was cured by a prescription. Years later, it came back and this time they found that I have a Hiatal hernia. I have taken 20 MG Prilosec. for over 10 years and still have heartburn once in a while and need a few Tums. Now I have liver damage that may be from too much Prilosec...
Oh man Terry sorry to hear that. It was probably H pylori
@@TalkingWithDocs Yes, H pylori is what it was. I couldn't remember the name, but you got it.
So I had a minor flutter in my throat and the 1st doctor put me PPI's- here's the downside- extremely difficult to get OFF of them. I mean your body stops producing stomach acid (which we now know is necessary for a variety of reasons) - once I tried to wean off- reflux came roaring back-much worse. Ugh. So my new GI doctor- said, " you have a hiatal hernia-go see this surgeon; he can perform a procedure to fix it and end the reflux". He also told me that I was good candidate since my weight was low and always stable. Had the surgery 6 Jun 21- last day of heartburn was 5 Jun. NONE since the procedure. I would never take PPI's again-- total ick. So my hats off to Surgeons- they FIX the problem- medication just masks the symptoms. What was the surgery like? Easy peasy- 1 night in the hospital- home with liquid Tylenol and heating pad for minor discomfort. The only issue was the funky diet (about 12 weeks) and now....Jan 2022- I feel great. Surgeons ROCK!

Such a huge fan! I have chronic heartburn due to meds I take daily. My diet and weight are fine, but I take Dexilant ever day to control the discomfort. All was well for years until until I developed colitis and was advised most anti-heartburns meds may have this unfortunate side-effect/condition??? WTH?
Hi Flip Flop. Sorry to hear that. There is som evidence that PPIs and NSAIDS and some anti depressants can aggravate microcolitis. The gut is very sensitive. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure will give heart burn too
a table spoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before meals helps
Thanks for the tip!
I rarely had heartburn but was having some chest pain so I had a scope. Turns out I did have “silent” heartburn and a small spot of Barretts. Two years of PPI’s fixed it and all good for the last few years.
Great video. I made some lifestyle changes and raised the head of my bed by 2" (using a 2 x 4) and raising my head using two pillows and haven't had any reflux events. It's really about lifestyle changes, eat early, minimal alcohol, avoid sweets before bed try to stay away from chocolate especially.
Good advice Dave. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I personally can tell a difference depending on how much stress I’m under so I try to meditate before bed each night. It helps! I’ve heard stress turns off your proton pump inhibitors or something, causing the acid to leave the stomach.
Also, as a Speech Therapist, I see a lot of people who report heartburn who are edentulous. I encourage them to get dentures so that they can fully masticate their food so that the stomach doesn’t have to work so hard producing acid to break down the meat (if you don’t have teeth, then you are NOT chewing your food up but only gumming it). I often find that edentulous people resort to a meatless diet because meat makes them nauseous. When I educate them from a swallowing perspective, it all makes sense. Once they get dentures and can chew up their meat, they begin to enjoy it again.
Hi J A. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
@@TalkingWithDocs could you cover Bile Reflux please
I've got my teeth (knock wood) but have been pescatarian for years. Once a year I allow myself a cheat meat. This year I cooked a duck leg for Thanksgiving and the smell and texture made me nauseaus. So no judgments to meatlovers, but not everyone who can chew can stomach meat! I may never eat meat again! Though meditate or being creative through art or just watching comedy helps with stress!

Hi all. I've seen many references to the fact that mint relaxes the esophageal sphincter, resulting in the escape of stomach acid. That being the case, why are so many over the counter reflux remedies mint flavoured?
Baffling!

Question for Dr. Arya: Set-up; Gaviscon Extra Strength Antacid chewable tablets - In Canada (this product has Alginic acid sourced from brown seaweed and the label lists a measured amount of this ingredient. In the U.S.A., (our Gaviscon Extra Strength Chewable tablet formulation ingredient list doesn't provide a specific source of the included alginic acid nor is the amount of this ingredient listed.)
Personally, I find that the Canadian version is more effective than the U.S.A version.
Dr. Arya, do you know of any science-based reason why alginic acid sourced from brown seaweed and/or a specific dose of this ingredient might be beneficial in treatment of "heart burn"? You Docs are awesome!!!!

Great video! After suffering with GERD for years (progressively worse) and I was prescribed Esomeprazole (prilosec) which works great BUT now long term use is causing kidney disease in people (CKD). Also taking this med just re-enforces bad behavior to eat whatever whenever. So, I stopped taking it and SOLVED my heartburn problem for good -- by getting an adjustable bed. I have not had one problem since and its been over a year.
Unfortunately the medical machine makes no money on simple solutions, and my Dr and the GI specialist never mentioned it (I wonder why?)
Believe me, it really works.
Hi G. Glad you are ok. We always recommend lifestyle modifications first like eating healthy but many patients simply do not want to do that. Elevating the head of the bed with pillows or an adjustable bed is great as well. And yes all medications potentially have side effects for sure. All the best! Thanks for watching and subscribing

Fundoplication eventually will be on tbe books for me
40 years ago when I was in medical school a patient visited the ER 3 times in an 18 hour period with "heart burn". We admitted him because he really had a rare kind of ischemia of the arteries of his heart.
With heart burn there are key elements. 1) FREQUENCY 2) SEVERITY 3) DURATION 4) RESPONSE. More often is of more concern. If the patient is disabled by the attack versus barely notices. If the pain persists especially after attempts at treatment. Response to treatments tells a tale as well.

Hi elham. Very welcome. Worth considering if you still have symptoms. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Recently had an endoscopy all,is good, however I get heartburn a lot, can’t seem to pin point, I love toast with PbJ, I get heartburn, rather than give up my peanut butter, I put very little on the toast now, 🥲 still heartburn, ruins my day 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
That was interesting! Thanks!
You are welcome Darlene.
I just happened to mention to my allergy doctor that I was waking up at 5 AM every morning and he said he believed that it was due to reflux.
I have been taking Protonix for 35 years and only recently watched a UA-cam video where Doctors indicated that it was never designed to be taken daily.
After a failed back surgery where we tried to fuse L4 and L5, it was discovered that I had the bones are in a 80 year old woman.
Do you think that the Protonix could’ve caused my weak bones?
I have tried taking an antacid instead of a Protonix, but my reflux came roaring back, and I was forced to sleep on my inclined chair in order to keep the acid in my stomach.
15 yrs ago I was diagnosed with Barrett’s but the last two endoscopy’s were clean.
Is there a way to get off of Protonix so that the acid reflux doesn’t come roaring back?
Do you agree that Allergies to grass, trees and weeds can cause the excess production of histamine, which in turn causes the excess production of acid which in turn can trigger the reflux.

I thought that the bile I felt in the back of my throat was postnasal drip, but he indicated that most likely it was acid being sprayed onto my back of my throat from this faulty sphincter that should be keeping the acid in my stomach.
So antacids have long been implicated in osteopenia and osteoporosis. Avoiding things like caffeine and alcohol are a great start. Sleeping with the head of your bed elevated slightly is important. Let gravity help you. Some people are tested for H Pylori bacteria as this can have an impact. As for the allergies they can play a role but likely secondary. Definitely worth a chat with your gastroenterologist.
Are burning/hot spices related to heartburn? Related to esophageal cancer?
Oh heck! I nver knew that about heart burn!! Thanks for the insight

My heartburn went away when I addressed my dust mite allergies. For me, it was allergy shots and an occasional Claritin.

I had one of those endoscopy things some years ago. Yes, Gerd was involved. In fact, what brought me to the doctor was I lost my voice for a month, he found that my voice box was swollen. I guess they found a hernia there as well. I rarely have heartburn.
Hope you are ok Linda. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Good information thanks again!
Would you mind asking Dr Aryhat briefly talk about IBS d
A topic most doctors said incurable.
Hi Rhoda. We can add it to the list. Yes the mainstay of treatment is trying to avoid things that aggravate it. Thanks for watching and subscribing
