I didn't think i would actually watch this in its entirety. But the mans voice is pleasant, and he explains the concepts in simple enough terms that i was engaged the whole time. Thank you for posting.
Another factor which I NEVER hear highlighted is bad sitting posture. While bio chemistry is obviously the major cause of GERD, simple physical pressure on the stomach sac itself forces stomach contents upwards. People who "don't sit up straight" usually with their shoulders slouched forwards often at keyboards physically press down on the rib cage which in turn presses your lungs & diaphragm down onto your stomach sac and into your lower abdomen causing increased pressure within the stomach with the result of forcing acidic stomach contents upwards. Sitting up straight with your shoulders back (and even holding your arms up straight above your head for a minute or so) lifts and expands your ribcage and relieves the downward pressure on your stomach, increasing its internal volume and reducing the chance of stomach contents being pushed upwards into the oesophagus.
This is amazing to hear! Because I have really bad posture when I work, and my whole body feels slouched now even when standing. I hope I can find some exercises to fix my back and posture permanently 😁😁
@@hawthorne1504 I'm not familiar with Pilates and the movements and stretches involved, but if it involves movements such as bending at the waist in a "touching your toes" sort of way, then if done after a large meal then certainly that would increase the pressure within the stomach sac and potentially force its contents upwards into the esophagus. Imagine a toothpaste tube with the cap taken off, now bend the tube in half and see what happens to the paste inside, you get the general idea. best wishes with your own condition.

Excellent presntation. My understaning is the majority of GERd is caused from not enough acid in the stomach, which prevents the sphinter from closing. If this is true, why was there not more discussion of this in your presentation? I thnk this is critical for sufferers to understand.
Probably because most doctors get a kick back on the number of Rx's they write. I did research on this also. I now use ACV 1tsp diluted in 8oz of water 30-40 mins before dinner. It works!!! They say to check with your doctor first!!! If you have stomach ulcers don't take it. ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER 😊
Agree with you completely Veronica. I too started doing thie same 2 weeks ago and so far so good. Not sure about the "kick back" but for sure its the fast and easy answer for a doctor to prescribe a drug to block or promote some function in the body rather than spend time getting to the root of the issue. PPI cblockers are the 3rd most prescribed drug in the USA which is insane when you think about the fact the probably 95% are unnecessary.@@veronicascott1477
Not sure why you are making this comment to me. All stomach hace acid. Some are overly active and some deficient. The majority of Acid reflux sufferers are deficient, and this is the point of my commentary to the doctor. So if you have been diagnosed via a Ph test that you have accesive acid, then feel free to take a PPI.@@mj24672

@@yonikab8066 GERD is, at least in the majority of cases. It's a chronic disease without a cure. There's treatment, both lifestyle, meds and/or surgery, but they are not cures. The wrap made by surgery, even if effective, lasts for 10 years approximately. The only good news is that the severity of GERD varies from person to person, along with the cause and the triggers. So you can be one of those people who can reach many long remissions, in which you can maybe stop PPIs and maybe even add some trigger foods in moderation. But it will never be like it was before. There are some people that have acid reflux but don't have an incompetent LES. These people can achieve cure, although it can be a difficult process

Hi. I had the same thing happening to me as well. I don't remember if the presenter explained why but I have found an explanation. When we fall asleep the nervous system is working differently and so the resting tone of the lower esophageal sphincter changes (lessens). We lose some tone because we are no longer swallowing on a regular basis. I don't know about you, but I follow an ultra low fat diet and it has helped. By ultra low fat, I mean very ultra low fat. For example, I eat only 'raw' nuts and not ones that are roasted (because they have oil). Another example - I eat raisins without added oil coating - you know, the ones that stick together? The raisins added to cereals and to party mixes have oil coatings. I stopped cooking with oil altogether. Even coconut milk has too much fat - I dilute it with cashew milk. I braise with homemade vegetable stock or steam with water. I eat mostly fish, tofu and chicken. I was grilling, but it broke recently. It's been tough, but I'm finally sleeping through the night. Best wishes to you.
Best explanation i have seen on how GERD happens, and the mechanism of action for different classes of (dangerous) drugs. Also good reminders to chew food thoroughly and eat smaller meals.
Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this in such detail. I had a fundoplication in 2001 due to recurrent bouts of pneumonia which damaged my lungs. My GERD was silent, so I couldn't feel the symptoms. Now, I'm dealing with it again and found all this very helpful! Thanks so much!

In continuation of my first comment or question, is it possible, though, that too much carbohydrates are the causes of imbalance acid in the stomach and may play a very important role for the level of acidity in the stomach? In the majority, we eat more carbs that protein and carbs are converted to sugar, which is more damaging than fat. Would the kito diet perhaps be part of the important healing of the guts? If we look at the increasing population of Gerd sufferers and the increase in the amount of foods high in carbohydrates that we eat more than ever before is alarming. Many years ago, the majority ate more meat than carbs. Many years ago, people in general were more healthy because I do believe that meat fat is easier to digest, even though harder to digest in the stomach, but it is more healthy than sugar. Fruits and veggies "carbs" have plenty of sugar and are hard to remove from our system. Sould we eat more protein "meat with fats" and consume fewer cabs?

Try apple cider vinegar capsules NOT liquid as liquid will burn esophagus that's already stressed from heartburn! 450 mg at night on empty stomach. Also drink alkaline water. Has helped me tremendously!
Kefer and apple cider vinegar. No sugar, coffee, soda, or any caffeine/ chocolate. White chicken, fish, vegetables, and fruit. Please read my comment again. I was not offering medical advice whatsoever. Omeprazole is the 9th most prescribed drug in the USA. Some of these patients and i believe many are blocking the acid long term (over 1 month) with PPI. This is dangerous. So I am asking why the presetation did not spend some time discussing the possibility of not enough acid in the stomach and cause the sphinter to remain open.@@PedroKing99

When i started taking NESCAFE'S TASTERS CHOICE French Roast my heartburn was not triggered and am even able to enjoy it twice a day most of the time. I avoid taking it three times a day though i can tolerate this for a day or two before it becomes a problem.
Very good explanation. Ive found caffine drinks make it worse and for me wheat flour. I have been on PPi`s for 25 years. I am( was) a healthy male, healthy weight but got reflux way back then due to life style like drinking and occasional smoking. Now I cant come off them because I get immediate acid hypersecretion which is very painful and dangerous ( barrettes oesophagus etc ) . Also, I broke my ankle very easily and think maybe my bone has suffered due to the meds. Its horrible .
My Gerd progressed to Barrett's Esophagus😔 and I just stopped the PPI's due to horrible side effects in my belly and bowels...whole digestive system issues. 5 days out...its so hard I am experiencing such bad acid, running to sink to spit it out when it comes up my throat. I haver tried several things lately to stop it...which I believe there is no way to stop it completely, but just ease it some. I take Lily Of The Valley Aloe Vera gel with the inner fillet, at least 4-5 times a day for its cooling and soothing effect and PH properties, Papaya chewable Enzyme's 4 at once daily, An alginate product called Reflux Gourmet, chew gum in between bought at health food store, Digestive Enzymes with Betaine HC two each meal that has protein, also drinking Alkaline water..I am only seeing a 50% change in acid attacks. I'm afraid to do the Apple Cider Vinegar, because my esophagus is already burning from tissue damage, like open wounds and the ACV may irritate it or burn it more. Healing esophagus at this point is not possible, irreversible damage. Please everyone, try to help your Gerd BEFORE it gets to this, because you won't like having Barrett's one bit and it leads to cancer for some people. If only I knew it was that serious of a condition before hand, so I could take better measure to not get it. Now I will have to be on an alkaline diet for life, eat very small meals, get rid of all the chocolate, coffee and eat blander, softer foods. These things help a fraction, but not good enough to protect from further damage. Acid still finds it's way at times back up. Let this be a warning not to play around with this condition..there is only one way it can go ....downhill. Best wishes all!!!
I had same issue re getting of ppi's. I used ppi granules to reduce very slowly. Once off them I had acupuncture. Yes there is science behind this and it worked. I don't eat foods that trigger me eg. saturated fat, full fat dairy, chocolate or wine. If I drink it will be a gin and tonic. I take rennies which is just calcium and magnesium to reduce stomach acid if I have eaten out. On occasion I use DGL licorice to coat my stomach if I feel stomach issues coming on.

So recently, he started keto diet and takes apple cider vinegar. These changes of diet seem to reduce his severity of his attacks and symptoms. No, i don't think so. It feels that way but it is probably just gas stuck in a spot. With me i get a bloated pressure most of the time on my lower left side of my stomach. When i take my omeprazole or famotidine followed by an apple about an hour later than i can feel things ease up and a sense of gas moving. As soon as i push down on that part of my stomach putting light pressure on it i automatically burp which brings even more relief. My sister who is a nurse as well as the doctors i have had told me if its on the left side of the chest and it feels like a child is sitting on your chest than there is something heart related going on. Also if you get up and start walking and feel the pain increasing that is a sure sign something is wrong and you need to get to the hospital as this is not just a case of gerd or heartburn etc. I usually go out for walks and it always relieves or eliminates the heartburn after taking the other above steps if am having a bad case of heartburn that morning. Walking helps to get the trapped gas moving around where eventually i can burp or expel it out of my body thru my bum bum ha ha. Best wishes and remember its about moderation not elimination as my first doctor who treated me once told me.

I like to do Pilates, but do you think that these exercises are forcing the acid into the esophagus?

I don’t believe that because if I make myself throw up, once the acid is out of my stomach, I feel better.
Apple cider vinegar capsules/pills wrk great! Not Apple cider vinegar n liquid form as ur esophagus will burn due 2 heartburn n the capsules by pass that n go straight 2 stomach. Also drink alkaline water 9.5 to start then u can lower to 7 or 8.

- Elevate the top of your bed by ~1.5 inches (3.75 cm)
- Have smaller meals
- Have less fat in your meals
- Avoid: mint, chocolate, smoking, alcohol, carbonated drinks and acdic foods like orange juice, coffee or tomato sauce.
- Don't wear tight cloths
- Reduce your weight
- Reduce stress
- Don't work out on a full stomach
@@KM-vc7iy I have never read that if you get the lining healed it will be less suseptable to irritation. When is the last time you took this much time out of the day to do something for strangers?
Is the acid reflux lifetime ?

Raise the front of your bed a couple inches. Gravity will keep the liquids from back flowing when you lie down
Best explanation i have seen on how GERD happens, and the mechanism of action for different classes of (dangerous) drugs.

Please read my comment again. I was not offering medical advice whatsoever. Omeprazole is the 9th most prescribed drug in the USA. Some of these patients and i believe many are blocking the acid long term (over 1 month) with PPI. This is dangerous. So I am asking why the presetation did not spend some time discussing the possibility of not enough acid in the stomach and cause the sphinter to remain open.@@PedroKing99
Thanks for mentioning the coffee. I will stop my 3 per day de-cafe. Appreciate your sharing this.

I do have z snall hernia and wonder if i could have surgery for the hernia if this would cure the heartburn?? I think the worst part is the insomnia. Thankyou Dr.

Have you checked for peptic ulcer?
My oesophagus doesn’t work so don’t think I could have the op. Does your oesophagus work? The linx op could work but is your hernia hiatus?

Dear doctor, can you explain about acute esophagitis due to GERD, thank you!
MY husband suffers from Gerd. He gets attacked at night, and he gets up all of a sudden because of difficulty breathing, and it's scary until he starts coughing and gets the burn on his trout, etc... So recently, he started keto diet and takes apple cider vinegar. These changes of diet seem to reduce his severity of his attacks and symptoms. Is it possible, though, that Gerd sufferres has a low acid in their stomach, therefore the sufferer need to balance the acid in their stomach and in doing so will help to relax the sphincter of the oesophagus? I am not a doctor, but I want to help my husband, so I will have to understand the level of acid in the stomach and the relaxation of the sphincter. How do these health mechanisms in the stomach work or correlated? Is it like a car that if the engine uses the wrong fuel eventually gets broken? Please explain!
If nothing else works, try using red apple delicious for a few days. It worked for me and my wife and the problem never came back.
I had the exact same middle of the night symptoms. Stay on keto -- my severe gerd went into complete remission after about 60 days on the diet. Also, be sure to eat at least 3 hrs before bed. I also raised my headboard using bricks to elevate my head. Gravity helps! If I go back to the SAD diet for more than a few days, it comes back. Not worth it -- I will stay keto for life!

Does Gerd put pressure on the heart? Soon ass I take a gas pill it goes away?
