I got into it with a girl about co-washing and shampoo. She said shampoo is only for your scalp. I explained that your hair gets dirty too. For a long time, I've been reading the ingredients on the back of labels and listening to my hair. I don't believe the hype of every new product on the market. I have the book called The Science of Black Hair and she doesn't say anything about not shampooing. Especially as I live in London with pollution and extremely hard water, shampoo is the only thing that is going to get that out! I have very fine hair so much so the Trichologist told me to stop braiding my hair in any thing more than 2 or 3 French braids. She showed me my strands under a microscope of where the small braids and cornrows were causing micro-tears in my strands. Funnily enough she didn't say stop using shampoo either. Lol! People really need to know the science of products, of ingredients and of hair and how and when to apply them. Also I just watched Cyn Doll, another cosmetologist and she was reminding people that products also have a ph level to check whether store bought or home made. They pushed these products to make money, that's it. We really don't need half of the products out here. I like to Cowash every once and a while but not consistently throughout the month. I'll just do one week or to refresh but that's it. I think people do it cuz the Glamtwinz do it 😅

People who use regular conditioner as a deep conditioner .. I'm like sis, a 5-10 minute conditioner will not do anything for you if you leave it on any longer. These products have specific instructions for a reason.
Traders Joe's Tea Tree Tingle conditioner is a regular conditioner, but I use it to deep condition sometimes and it is awesome. My sister uses it also.

Good information! I would appreciate a product application video. I use a leave-in, cream moisturizer and grease (LCO) on wash day because it keeps my hair moist and conditioned. I may reapply moisturizer and light grease several days later depending on how my hair feels. I use two different lines for this only because I like to switch things up. The grease is either Dax or Blue Magic Coconut Oil for the most part. A lot of naturals don’t like grease but it works for me and it’s a lot less greasy than oils and butters.
When you reapply the grease do you spray water or leave in and then put grease back into your hair? Im trying to figure out how to reapply it. When i do it on wash day i do leave in, moisturizer and grease
TheFactsAccordingToGabbie1791 If I need to reapply, I will use a light layer of moisturizer or leave-in, then a light coat of grease, mainly on the ends of my hair.
Great video! I don't use conditioner. I use oils. I never understood why washing hair with conditioner was going to clean it. Thanks for sharing with us.
Cowashing does help to refresh my hair and scalp if they get a lil smelly or itchy from dryness when i don't have time for a full wash day. It does give me another day or two before I need to shampoo. That's about it. I love shampooing!
Yes. I cant cowash...my hair will get buildup so quickly...I have to shampoo...yes I need more than a leave in for my hair to retain moisture...I will use a buttercream on top of my leave in.🤗
You have saved me many a dollar. Here in Barbados products are ridiculously expensive so I have to be considerate with my coins but still do what's best for my hair.
Conditioner is designed to ph balance after a shampoo right? Manufacturers now are putting in some pretty good moisturizing ingredients now so I can see how people mix up the terms.
You are so right! I have a 200 year old year old picture of my ggg grandmother and her hair was to her but, thick and beautiful. She wasn’t using all these hair products or tools. It’s all about the money.
I LOVE shsmpooing my hair and i clean all of it, not just the scalp. My shampoo is the best. I tried solely cowashing for 3weeks straight as an experiment using straight conditioner my hair was trash, limp, dull and just yuck, had to shampoo 3xs and clay wash to bring my hair back to its springy life I dont condition, i go straight to deep condition after the shampoo, then leave in and butter/buttercream. Thanks Narada
Thank you so much. I moisture my kinky hair every day with water. And my hair loves grease. Back in the day we did no co wash. Clean your hair & scalp. Love your videos.
I recently added the Indian Hemp hair grease back into my loc care routine with rosewater and Wild Growth oil on occasion. My scalp feels so much better now and I use the grease maybe three times a week. I spritz with the rosewater two to three times a day. Thanks for the advice.
Yay! I'm glad to know my advice is working great for you! Thanks for the update! See if you can get it down to greasing your scalp once or twice a week. You shouldn't need so much of it.
The thing about cowashing is so true!! I cowashed for years because I just didn’t know and I was following the advice of people from UA-cam. Over that time my scalp health really deteriorated.. my hair grew fine and looked fine but my scalp was always itchy.. I always had dandruff.. one day after cowashing my scalp would be itchy again so I’d wash it AGAIN. And I had no idea what was going on.. I was reading natural hair forums and tons of women were saying they stopped cowashing because of the same things and washed their hair with shampoo for each wash and their hair and scalps were doing great. Surprise, surprise... I started washing my hair with shampoo twice a week and my scalp is 100% better
Along with not cleaning. Conditioners often are not water soluble so they create a barrier to lock water in your hair. But if you always are coating your hair with conditioner no water can get into your hair in order to moisturize your hair.
Pure truth one thing that truly frees not only your purse, but your piece of mind from the product nonsense. Would be simply using REAL natural ingredients for your hair. If you eat well then right in your kitchen should be exactly what you need for your hair to succeed.
Honestly I haven’t been using conditioning my hair in awhile. I haven’t found a really good conditioner that helps me condition. I shampoo and go straight to deep hair mask.
Thank you I started back using grease on my scalp once I saw your retwist video and it has felt sooooo good😍. I had been trying to just use different oils and water but my hair and scalp stayed dry. I haven’t scratched since I used the grease. I have one question though. I know I need to spritz my hair with water daily, but how do you maintain a retwist while spraying water everyday. As soon as water touches my hair it puffs up into an fro at the roots.
This makes perfect sense now. For example, I have my hair bleached and dyed. I use other products to MOISTURIZE. But I use conditioner to keep my hair supple and soft as it is more fragile than someone who has done nothing to their hair. I moisturize my hair, but use conditioner to keep the moisture in and retain the pliableness.
Naroda, I get it! I used to do a lot of this STUFFfrom watching youtube, but your hair won't grow. I shampoo and grease my hair and scalp. I apply aphogee light protein every once in a while, but that's it. My hair has grown so much in a year. Believe me I listen to what you say. Please keep giving your knowledge to keep me on track. Thank you....
When my hair was at its best while relaxed I used the cheapest products and the only thing I left in my hair was olive oil and shea butter. Now that my hair is natural it’s harder for me to work with just those products. I finally found what works but it’s not necessarily cheap. But I’m trying to find cheaper alternatives now that I know what ingredients are good for me.
You sir have taught me to keep my regime simply! Moisturize, condition, seal! Not necessarily in that order. Lol. Please don't leave us you seem a little annoyed with us, but I promise I will listen. I know we naturals can be annoying we jump on EVERY new trend today and think our hair will grow to the floor tomorrow. But I listen to soooo I reinerate, PLEASE DON'T LEAVE US...

Thank you for this video, I needed this message. I know you said you'd pray on it but if it makes any difference I myself would really appreciate a video/s on different products and application, especially coming from you. I think maybe if we all had a better understanding on how to apply different products as opposed to going out and buying every new thing that claims to solve all our problems, it might make a difference. I'm 7 years in and very open to learning and trying different things. Thanks again ☺
Would a deep conditioner be considered a moisture intensive product? It has been recommended for general natural hair care (e.g. " Deep condition twice per week"), but does everyone really need it though? What is the deep conditioner doing? And what's the point of it if you're going to follow up with a layer of moisture intensive products that work anyway: leave-in, then cream, then grease/butter/oil?
Jazzerlat45 before i loced my hair i started to dc twice a week... I experienced little to no shedding/breakage... I didn’t think it was necessary but my hair changed sooo much in just a mo after i started twice a week dc and it was noticeable after the first two and i never even had to use heat.
@@jessicab331 Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm eager to hear more people share their experience with deep conditioners (if they need it and how their hair benefitted from it or lack thereof). I haven't deep conditioned in ages and the times I have attempted to deep condition, the deep conditioners I had never worked (Cantu Masque and Eden Bodyworks Natural Hair Masque Treatment. By the way, no slip in either one and not moisturizing in case anyone is curious). My hair grew healthy and has been manageable with just using a rinse out conditioner after I shampoo. I don't know if I'm just lucky or there actually is potential for my hair to look and feel better using a deep conditioner that actually works. What deep conditioner did you use when you had free natural hair?
@@Jazzerbean i used sm 10 in 1 mask but hoenstly i think there's better dcs out there. what brands does ur hair already like> u can try from that. for me, i feel like dc didn't do an "OMG AMAZING" type of thing for me. at first, it seemed great, but i was doing it weekly, so i stopped and did it twice/once a month. a lot of ppl say to do it often but i dont rec u do it.
The As I Am co wash is the bomb tho. It makes my hair feel thicker after washing. Maybe it’s all in my head, but I love how it makes my hair feel afterwards. However, I do wash my hair with DE oak protein and henna shampoo. Love that as well.
I always say the same thing, cowashing is like taking a shower and cleansing your body with lotion. I glad someone else sees it the same. Don't be afraid to shampoo, because your going to put the moisture right back in afterwards just deep condition following the shampoo, plain n simple.
hey, What tha......! Hey! Welcome back! Ok...bout to shetup n watch, good 2 see you! ok watched, came bk..Everything YOU said! I love washing my hair, hair grows from a dry clean scalp. I've noticed that yes my hair "feels" good under the coating of conditioners but its an illusion often that will cover up the true signs of the health of my strands and scalp having bacteria growing from all the moist environment. Often even leading to spotting. When my hair is moisturized good once, and my scalp left alone, (and i wash 2x wk) so where it feels a little dry but I know its been cleaned with a good organic shampoo with healthy benefits (diluted w/lots water) I then leave it alone and notice new growth pushing out everywhere, till I go decide to help it and add leave-ins ;( and it stops....i started leaving it alone with all these products.
I used a CoWash once that was pretty much shampoo. They marketed it as "co-wash" since that's what was popular. I was surprised and kept using it because I love shampoo. 😂😂😂
I wear wash and goes a lot I find it keep my hair moisturized. I use leave in condish with oil mixed in to set my curls and mist my hair with water oil mix to refreshen. Wash day (which is once a week sometimes every two weeks) I use shampoo and conditioner. I find that if I keep my hair routine simple my hair thrives
Hello, I understand what your saying everyone's hair reacts differently for me I wet my hair in the shower every day and add conditioner's on my hair every day. My hair loves more protein base products more with rising my hair in the showing with conditioner and adding some protein products every day and than fully washing my hair once a week with shampoo my hair is past bra strap length. Your right co washing is not shampoo!
If you haven’t already, and if you have the inclination, will you do a video on the different types of cleansing agents available shampoo? I personally avoid sulfate and sulfate derivative cleansers because they irritate my skin but there are all kinds of cleansing agents that clean and feel different on the hair. I love soap bars made with saponified oils as a shampoo but I’ve had good experiences with shampoos based on Castile soap, coco-betaine, SCI, and other similar cleansers. Maybe if people understand how many different things fall under the category of shampoo they can find something they feel comfortable using.
Glad your back😊😊😊 when you have the time can you do video for us lazy naturals lol how to maintain hairs health for people who dont use products as often
I still love the as I am co wash but will only use in the summer when I use a true refresh of my washn go mid week. I once used co washes as a true cleanser and yep my hair broke off my hair has grown so much since I've gone back to using shampoo. I use shampoo twice a month only cause I don't use products that cause heavy build up.
This is why I’m completely turned off from buying products because I feel like they’re half assed and contain RANDOM “natural berries” n shit just to say they contain them and say “oh it has strengthening coconut milk”. It has no purpose to have a pina colada on your scalp. I swear, my hair feels better with just plain water and absolutely NO leave in products compared to when I use things. Everything nowadays cause me buildup and takes the shine from my hair. So I’m trying something new for once and doing nothing but cleansing and conditioning, then rinsing. So far so good, I have curls in places where I didn’t think was possible and I credit that to removing the bullshit products and going to the very basic water as the ultimate “product”
And for my hair, I can’t even use pure oils, my hair absolutely hates it. Hair will feel the exact same, just oily. Soft with shea butter, but only for a while then it’s crunch city
So whenever I wash my hair (every 3-4 days) can I put moisturizer that you rinse out and then put leave in conditioner for best moist hair and manageability and if yes what’s the best natural products
When did people get so far away from just using common sense? I'm in my 40s, and I've been natural for over 20 years. I wash, condition, and moisturize my hair, and then use an oil or butter to seal in the moisture. When I had locs, I washed them, skipped the conditioner, and just used water and oil on them daily. It really is that simple. People make things way more complicated than they need to be. You don't need a whole bookshelf full of products, 14 hour "wash days," and routines filled with a whole bunch of who shot john just to maintain healthy hair.
@M ah I understand that you agree with this, but talking about mental illness like that is nasty. It's existed even before it had a name. Humans have always complicated things. Always. Do not be that *ignorant* , or at the very least *don't share it* .

Yes. I cant cowash...my hair will get buildup so quickly...I have to shampoo...yes I need more than a leave in for my hair to retain moisture...I will use a buttercream on top of my leave in.🤗
I love to hear your perspective on Natural Hair Care.
I Totally Agree With You
You have saved me many a dollar.
Your page and knowledge is so underrated! 😀
You are so right! I have a 200 year old year old picture of my ggg grandmother and her hair was to her but, thick and beautiful. She wasn’t using all these hair products or tools. It’s all about the money.
Bottom line > KEEP IT SIMPLE Y'ALL!!
Thank you sir for giving us the business!😀
*Got to drink water*
I LOVE shsmpooing my hair and i clean all of it, not just the scalp.
My shampoo is the best.
I tried solely cowashing for 3weeks straight as an experiment using straight conditioner my hair was trash, limp, dull and just yuck, had to shampoo 3xs and clay wash to bring my hair back to its springy life
I dont condition, i go straight to deep condition after the shampoo, then leave in and butter/buttercream.
Thanks Narada
all the products on the market does tend to be confusing...Thanks for your explanation...you make things so much clearer and simple
Thank you. My locks are strong but still needs good care.
Thankyou for being so truthful. I truly appreciate you and how you are helping us naturals.
@@AfrikanHairGod ok, I'll definitely try cutting down now.
Aquarius 83 the Kuza Indian hemp brand was my hair grease back in the day! But I just use nature’s blessings now
@@makeda2010able it was a throwback to my childhood too
Me too! My roots aren’t so dry now
The thing about cowashing is so true!!
I don't Co-wash at all
Me either! That's like saying half clean hair.
The hard pause @ 9:34 😂☠🤣☠😂😭 I'm so glad you're back!🥰😁
It was a much needed video. I've few cowash between wash but I could not leave without a shampoo.
Thanks for the info and the ppl in the comments, I learned something new. Thanks everyone 🙂
That’s why I always read the labels
I love your videos..so much knowledge with a little humor.
You do the loc method?
You sir have taught me to keep my regime simply! Moisturize, condition, seal! Not necessarily in that order. Lol. Please don't leave us you seem a little annoyed with us, but I promise I will listen. I know we naturals can be annoying we jump on EVERY new trend today and think our hair will grow to the floor tomorrow. But I listen to soooo I reinerate, PLEASE DON'T LEAVE US...
You do the loc method? What do you use?
@@thefactsaccordingtogabbie149 yes ma'am loc method all day, henna every two months or so follow up with a deep conditioning with heat. Keep it simple, my hair is flourishing.
@@thefactsaccordingtogabbie149 oh, I'm forgot I use a leave in, black jaimacan castor oil, wetline extreme (blue) as my cream and I two strand twist. Style as desired😁
Agreed.I cowash daily with carols daughter black vanilla conditioner and wash weekly with shea moisture sulfate free shampoo. My hair is shiny, moisturised and growing. I have tightly coiled 4B natural hair.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful advice! You and Moknowshair say to shampoo your hair. I don’t cowash my hair because I don’t see the benefits. I haven’t switched products either because I stick to what works! I mean I’ll try new products but I always go with what works for my hair.
Good information! I never did like co- washing - I need to see and feel suds. Haha
You really need to just teach classes. We really need more beautician's that educate! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ and charge lol
You are a great teacher! Thank you for your service 😘
WITHOUT WATER THEIR IS NO MOISTURE
You are very knowledgeable
Thank you for your knowledge, I love when stylist drop knowledge, missed your channel last time I saw you, you were saying you were pausing :)
Oh and love the locs
Ohh I had it wrong!!! But makes sense ...taking notes
@@Jazzerbean you'd have to try one u like and use it for a month to see results
@@jquiet6487 Of course :) If you deep condition, do you recommend any deep conditioners?
@@Jazzerbean i used sm 10 in 1 mask but hoenstly i think there's better dcs out there. what brands does ur hair already like> u can try from that. for me, i feel like dc didn't do an "OMG AMAZING" type of thing for me.
at first, it seemed great, but i was doing it weekly, so i stopped and did it twice/once a month. a lot of ppl say to do it often but i dont rec u do it.
Thanks for sharing Narada!!!!💚💚💚
The As I Am co wash is the bomb tho. It makes my hair feel thicker after washing. Maybe it’s all in my head, but I love how it makes my hair feel afterwards. However, I do wash my hair with DE oak protein and henna shampoo. Love that as well.
❤️❤️❤️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾thank you, thank you, thank you!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤️❤️❤️
Yes please do a product application video!!
You always give the best advice!!! I love it!
I use my coach for my wigs. So soft😊 Never made it on my head.
I used a CoWash once that was pretty much shampoo. They marketed it as "co-wash" since that's what was popular. I was surprised and kept using it because I love shampoo. 😂😂😂
So I just did the big chop and was looking for a stylist In GA and never thought to look on UA-cam. Ugh
Before you even really got into the video I felt you. A lightbulb went off! Conditioning is controlling and maintenance, managing.
I cowash but like once a month I shampoo more often.I used sulfate free shampoos
So GLAD you are still do videos. Tell them honey
Glad your back😊😊😊 when you have the time can you do video for us lazy naturals lol how to maintain hairs health for people who dont use products as often
thank you for clarifying this! Love your Channel
This is the kind of advice I need for my hair--advice from a licensed professional.
Great Video, I usually cleanse my scalp with a shampoo and follow up with a co-wash on the second wash, is this a good practice?
I was just thinking this when people on Twitter say shampoo, conditioner and gel 😐
Right also deep conditoners too even creams pomades 👍❤
What do you think of using a shower cap for a few hours to sort of steam hair (in theory)? Moisturizing?
Thanks for the info! May help to jot down some notes to stay on track.
Say again for the people in the back!
@M ah I understand that you agree with this, but talking about mental illness like that is nasty. It's existed even before it had a name. Humans have always complicated things. Always. Do not be that *ignorant* , or at the very least *don't share it* .
Yes yes yes tell it 😍😍😍😍 love this video
