I've begun to hear claims that many naturals are becoming so concerned with keeping their natural hair moisturized, that they are deep conditioning as much as 2x in a single week! Wtf are you doing to your hair that would make you feel that you need to feel condition that much? Hopefully, this video offers some insight as to why doing that to your hair can cause more harm than good.
I deep condition whenever I wash my hair which could be once or twice a week. I’ve been doing it for almost 10 years and my hair is just fine lol. I also don’t over do it with how long I keep the deep conditioner in my hair though.
I only deep condition once a week when I shampoo. I alternate between a moisture dc and a protein because i have color treated relaxed hair. I also use a protein leave in and a moisturizer which i alternate between
Wearing hair slicked back into tight buns and ponytails will have a negative effect on hair elasticity as well. Definitely experienced that & addressed it with incorporating light protein in my regimen and wearing a greater variety of hairstyles. Great vid 👍🏽
Wait..this roughness feeling on my hair may be texture and not dryness. I've been equating soft hair to moisturized hair and rough feeling hair to dry hair. Please elaborate on this if possible. So many people think they have dry hair and may just have rough textured hair?
Not chebe powder, rice water rinses, and mud washes 🤣💀🤣. I remember the Aztec clay, 🍌, and 🥑 hair mask days, I ain't know they came out with new stuff. We using everything except shampoo, conditioner, and hair grease. You doing the Lord's work out here man.
Great video. I loved the point you made about hair texture. It doesn't mean your hair is dry. Alot of us want are hair to feel soft like the deep conditioning feeling all the time. 7 days a week. Its unrealistic. Its ok our hair is ok. I was guilty of that. Keeping it simple. Having a clean scalp and moisturizing your hair. Makes sense. It all comes down to just keeping it simple. And we don't need millions of products. And loving your hair. Great point.
K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Sis) Yas. I have 3 full heads of hair to take care of: mine and my two daughters, so I don't have time for any extra. And it works! Btw, my family is still using Cantu leave in, the Shea Butter one and the Argan Oil one too. A little water, a little leave in, a little oil and then style. 💋
I got elasticity damage back in the day when everyone on YT was recommending the baggie method. My hair went from soft to mushy. Just can't follow all natural hair trends, gotta know what works for you.
Conrowing my hair back and putting it into a tight ponytail caused my hair to look wavy at the nape even after washing and I have 4c hair. I think that's elasticity damage. Also, i remember conditioning my hair with Pantene. My hair was super soft and it just stretched and stretched until it broke.
I experienced moisture overload my first year of being natural, I decided to deep condition overnight once. I was too tired to finish my wash day. This is why you don’t start doing your hair late when you’re tired. 😂The next morning my hair was just sliding off on the comb, it felt so gummy. I did a protein treatment right away and it was back to normal.
Thank you for posting. It is a very informative video and will help me alot - i've never come across a video that talks about elasticity damage and it is well noted. Thank you!
YIPPEEEEEE HE'S GOT HIS BOTTLE BACK!!! I SO LIVE FOR THAT!!! Thanks another great video, I actually found that each time I shampoo ( about every 2 to 3 wks ) deep conditioning instead of conditioning works wonders. Tho I only deep condition for as long as it takes me to do a full body exfoliation, and shower which is usually about 15 to 20 mins. Then I rinse it all out, and I only use all natural edible foods as my deep conditioners. Since I've been doing this my hair has continued to seriously flourish. Plus I cut out a grip of wasted time that I assumed would have to be used for deep conditioning to work well.
This video is a great reminder. The pressure to have moisturized, defined hair is leading to new hair problems like you said! Some people are doing way too much! I've definitely had to learn the hard way that less is more.
Oh so THAT'S what happened to me in high school when I used conditioner in my hair 24/7 because I had obsessive thoughts about my hair being too dry... 😳 IF YOU READ THIS COMMENT, I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I AM ABSOLUTELY AMAZED AT THE AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE YOU GIVE US ALL ON YOUR CHANNEL 😭😭❤ I don't use those words lightly... I remember wanting a Q-Redew and reading a bunch of reviews about how quickly they broke. Then I saw 2 UA-camrs filming with the ones they pseudo-repaired. I'll stick to my hooded dryer and/or shower cap!
Another great and informative video! I would LOVE to see you talk about "heat training" hair because I think that is just a fancy way of saying "heat damage" but people swear up and down that it's different. Would love to hear from someone as knowledgeable as you.
I rarely comment, but I just have to say that I really appreciate your videos and your real insight and knowledge on haircare. Its a blessing we have someone like you on youtube who is willing to give real information instead of clout chasing and following trends. You also really inspire me to want to become a hair care professional :)
Wow....Your videos are so straightforward...I really appreciate your knowledge...too bad I live in Ohio so I could come to your shop..you are a great hairstylist and educator
This video was needed! I just had a major setback and ended up cutting because of this. U juts described what was going on with my hair. I was dc every week, sometimes two time a week. Sometimes I slept on it, other times I went to work with it. Sometimes I would use it like a rinse out. That plus post partum killed my hair and my edges. I'm recovering now. But DAMN
I definitely agree that steaming certain types of hair can damage it. Or oversteaming can damage the hair. Hair being too soft and mushy from over deep conditioning is damaging too. I have highly porous hair, so I most likely don't need to be steaming it. Some people with low porosity hair may have a better result from steaming. Every time I have to wash my hair a lot because of physical activity, I make sure I balance the moisture with protein, like Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor or Aphogee Green Tea Restructurizer. The Green Tea Restructurizer has helped tremendously!!! I just know about my hair porosity because it sucks up water easily and lets go of water easily. I never did the porosity test. I just study my hair. But yes, I agree with you. You are someone who uses good old COMMON SENSE! I like you!!!
I definitely have some elasticity issues, more so in the front of my hair. I'll begin to incorporate some protein. I used to DC every week and over the past 6 months ive been doing it twice a month. Maybe I'll start doing it once a month to see how my hair responds. Thanks for sharing Narada! :)
Thank you for educating the class, especially the ignorant ones in the back. I love that I’m learning about hair while also enjoying the curriculum at the same time 😂. You are giving me modern day school house rock for natural hair & I’m here for it. Thank you, boo. Love you! Thanks to you I’ve learned to keep it simple with products & to use what works for my hair regardless if it’s not necessarily acceptable in the “natural hair community”. My hair has always been somewhat healthy but its actually flourishing because of you’re advice. I really appreciate you from the bottom of my heart ❤️
You speak the truth. I used so much deep conditioner on my hair to make it feel soft; as a result, it started breaking. Lesson I learned embrace my 4c hair texture. You hit it right on the nail.
I'm doing that now and I realized why wash day was always seen as a burden for me. There is no need to deep condition for an hour every week. I'm actually experimenting to push my deep conditioner to once a month and seeing how that works out. There is no need for all that hydrolyzed protein in my hair, esp when a lot of leave in products are formulated to have some too. And people wonder why their hair was getting protein overload.
Great video as usual. I think I was over moisturizing my hair. Ive gone back to the basics. I've started to use Blue Magic and water again. Thats all my mother used and I always had long thick healthy hair.
Hi there all you said in this clip unfortunately is TRUE I just trimmed off my hair recently for something similar from your experience,so now what i do is wash my hair, condition without heat, rinse that off apply my leave in conditioner, blowout my hair and style weekly, the end as simple as that.
This Video was so helpful to me! THANK YOU for making it!!! I could not figure out why I lost the elasticity in my Hair. I now believe I have over conditioned my Hair. Also, although I only used Rice Water 3 Times last Year, that might have also contributed to my Issue. I have thin Strands, so I believe I just did too much and my Hair just couldn't bounce back. Again, thank you for sharing your wisdom!!!
LOL, this throwback popped up on my recommended! Ppl coming for you about the steamer is hilarious. I'm glad I didn't hop on the steam-ing bandwagon. I don't own any rinse-out conditioners...I DC for 10-20 minutes every wash day (which is usually bi-weekly/weekly) and it works for me. I guess I should look into rinse-out. I know my hair likes proteins, I don't know why. This video is great esp. how "texture" feels like, you should do another video about "texture" vs "dryness".
I have never heard of elasticity damage but had wondered if alternating steam with deep conditioning would make my hair grow faster. Steamer didn't fit my budget so I stuck with deep conditioning. Whew! Knowing me I probably would have over done it trying to get my money's worth out of the steamer. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
This was great. You should do a vid on using too many products at one time and what basics everyone should have. I think people equate the feel of their chemically processed or heat treated hair to their natural hair.
This is FACTS. I’ve explained to a LOT of people that at no point should I not be able to feel the texture of my hair. If I use a product and I can no longer feel the texture of my hair, I throw it out. I think I notice it more because my strands are fine. I think people hold deep conditioning to a higher regard than they should. I looove a good dc session, but it’s not the key to healthy hair (I high key blame the twinz for making folks think that). Also, I don’t believe any UA-camr has done any ACTUAL research on hygral fatigue and they just confuse people instead of helping. I’ve only found one scientific journal in regard to it, and it makes sooooo much sense, but most people are just reading blog posts on hygral fatigue which isn’t research 🤷🏾♀️
doThatGWalk I saw that and people will do it because they have length. I’ve noticed the bad advice for years. At this point I watch them for entertainment, not hair advice.
doThatGWalk I mean the hair type shouldn’t matter when you’re licensed. The problem is they don’t practice. They just damage their hair with heat and then damage it further by trying to push a process that can’t be pushed. Then they sell it to us as healthy hair. I have a super similar hair type. Their methods tore my hair up 😂😂
I can't tell you how much I love your videos and appreciate them! This describes exactly what happened to my hair. I explained in another video I discovered I was over moisturizing my hair. Sure enough my hair was like a limp noodle and I didn't understand why. Anyway she is getting back healthy now because I listened to my stylist. Great video 👏🏾👏🏾
I recall learning from you how co-washing can be damaging and I stopped immediately, Now Im a Poo addict lol but I just love shampoo, I have a huge collection of shampoos from protein shampoos to nourishing moisturizing ones. But You're RIGHT I finally learned the texture of my own hair not the false lie conditioners left me assuming! And you know what, its coily on it's on quite nicely and I do allow it to get dry some times, its ok I've learned to accept the "FEEL" of my REAL HAIR! So shampoo, Thats where my Big Bucks go and I'll buy cheap conditioners unless I love the shampoo so much, I'll buy its matching one. I like to make multiple herbal tea rinses for my hair and to Drink of course, and I actually want my scalp/hair to receive those herbs, not be blocked by conditioners that only mask the real hair problem.
Thank you for your very informative and helpful videos. I have two young daughters and their textures are completely different. I'm learning that what works for one does not necessarily work for the other.
the way i describe it, the hair feels "mushy" . i didnt know what it was but i stopped deep conditioning so often and went back to my shampoo that had protein in it. im glad i listened to my gut.
Thank you for the valuable information. I have high porosity hair, I don't color, use any heat on a daily basis, I got a press and curl last month for Easter. That's the only time heat will touch my hair. My hair is due for a wash soon, will keep it simple like you said. Looking forward to your next video.
Sometimes when we find something that helps us, we tend to overuse it and its not the thing that helps us, it is us not understanding our hair, like you said. Get to know thy hair.
Yep this happened to me with the steamer and I have to cut it. Now I'm going through something similar with my crown being over deep conditioned and losing elasticity and I had to use olaplex this week and I will add protein too. You are 100% correct, thank you for confirming I'm not crazy!
My little sister got damage from the Max Hydration method. It was swelling her hair up her hair and stretching it like heat damage. He hair was getting mushy when wet like with heat damage. She wasn’t even using a steamer.
Thanks for doing this video! Now that you explained it, I definitely believe I have elasticity damage. I use a lot products that bring moisture to my hair and I'm guilty of deep conditioning for way too long. My curl pattern isn't as defined as it once was. Now I just have add more protein to fix the problem.
I no longer do overnight deep conditioning. My hair wasn't "right" when I rinsed it out. When I leave it in normal time and rinse out, my hair is perfect!
I've definitely dealt with elasticity damage in my hair. I currently deep contioner twice a month. Moral of the story: Take the time to learn your hair and be patient. Trying to rush your progress can become damaging.
Sir, you Hav just described my hair to a T. I thought my hair was really dry and I started doing the greenhouse treatment every night for about a month and only giving my hair a break maybe five or six times a month. I notice my hair looks just like what was shown in both videos. I can twist my hair when wet and it looked the very same as the videos, and it is when I can pull one strand of hair and it feels like the hair is stretching. I kinda figured that I had over moisturizer my hair. I am going to go and find me a good protein to use on my hair. Thank you so much!!!
I see what you are saying, and thank you for being straight up. For me I noticed my hair will get limp straight. When I do a protein/henna/rhausoul clay I alternate my dc. I shampoo and dc once week. And go to my stylist for my trims and braids and twist. When I’m not doing wash n go
I love my steamer but I do not use every week. Maybe each other week but nothing more. Plus I also don't sit under it for more than 20 minutes maybe even less.
I wish I had seen this, I over steamed my hair and it's damaged. I have cut from middle back to my neck area. Will see how it goes, have done aphogee no change my hv to big chop.
First of all I LOOOVE your videos. I had relaxers in my Hair from the age of 6 to 29. Needless to say I didn't need it. As a born New Yorker my hair was different, healthier. I moved to Fl a year ago and I absolutely hate my hair from May till Oct. And now I'm shedding like crazy 😔 because of your videos I have determined, I CAN'T determine my hair in this State. I truly think its a combo of water quality and weather. I go from brittle to super soft and elasticity issues. My hair when naturally dry will fall out MORE but still does when I blow dry it, just less. In NY my bi monthly blowout would be great and my fro equally popping. I would alternate protien and moister treatment of needed and be good. But down here I'm dammed in every way. I have tried shampooing/conditioner weekly, bi monthly, bi weekly. Co-washing (my hair really hates cowashing) heat, no heat its INSANE. I'm considering the big chop because to top it all off my hair was never the same after my baby, she's 3. Sigh our hair is part of who we are and I Hate how much I'm hating my hair right now. Sorry for long vent. And seriously thank you for your videos❤
I learned the hard way. Turned my hair to mush early on in my hair journey by over moisturizing. I know more about the structure of hair now and how to keep a good moisture/protein balance and after a 2nd big chop I’m on the right track with flourishing hair. It was a mess though!
I will never invest in something my mama didn’t invest in when I was younger lol. She doesn’t even know what a steamer is. I only wash my hair twice a month (every two weeks) and deep condition the same, but without any heat. Leave it in my head about 40 minutes and rinse it out. Anything done too excessively will cause damage, from the food you eat to what you put in your hair.
I shampoo and DC once a week, and alternate between one that is a combo protein and moisturizer and one that is just a moisturizing DC. Also once a week I just co-wash to restyle my wash-n-go. I don't use heat, steamers, or any of the fad type natural hair processes, and I finger detangle. That seems to be working well for me. I know you can't see my hair or anything, but does that seem like a reasonable routine?
Hi! I really really REALLY need advice! I'm natural and I wanted to wash my natural 4c hair and get cornrows. The hairdresser washed my hair and left it to sit for a bit. I then felt a slight burning sensation, so I checked what it was. I then saw that she used the megagrowth cream activator that comes in the relaxer pack. I asked her why she put a relaxer on my hair as I'm natural and she said she just used the activator as a conditioner, as the conditioner was finished. After being washed my hair felt dryer than usual, it could have been the sulphate shampoo or my hair not being moisturised properly, or the chemicals. She cornrowed my hair, it had no stringy/straight pieces. I do however wonder if it could potentially have been loosened. I'm really confused and upset. Can activator be used this way?
Just subscribed to your channel after watching a ton of awesome videos of yours! I was wondering should I be using a protein deep conditioner every wash day because even though I am natural I wear my hair straightened 9/12 months of the year. I'm curious if the regular heat constitutes adding more protein.
First of all video was informative as always. I wash and conditioning my hair every week. Is it okay to deep conditioning every other week thn other weeks regular conditioning. You mentioned used protein shampoo and protein conditioning. Do you have a brand name in mind. I wish I could visit your shop. Until I can I will be watching your video. ps Looking forward to your skating video.
Hey AfricanHairGod, many thanks for this video! I keep experiencing soreness and tenderness at the sides of my head (the bit of the head which curves downwards - hope I'm getting this right). I've noticed my scalp is a little shiny in those areas and that the texture is quite smooth. In addition to this, the hair in these areas are either thin or broken. I also experience soreness on my edges. Further to this, I have noticed random straight strands of hair on the front half of my head but rarely apply heat to my hair. I would really appreciate some advice on what's going on with my hair and scalp and how to correct it. Many thanks for you help so far! :D
I'm about to search the channel, but while I'm here: where do you feel the clay masks fall on the product spectrum? Cleanser, clarifier, or deep conditioner? Does it contain protein or naw? Why do you suspect the Naturals were so successful with a return of their curls with It? Please and thank you!
I have very fine 2c-3a hair, I put only conditioner in my hair as a moisturizer. I recently big chopped and the conditioner seems to be working fine and causing no problems. But listening to this video do you recommend I stop using conditioner as a daily moisturizer and just use a regular moisturizer?
A curly hairstylist recommended I deep condition once a week. I've been doing that for about a month with no issue, but I may cut back to twice a month just in case.
Yeah, I have just been moisturizing with water+aloe juice and then I lightly coat with jojoba oil. My hair feels moisturized but my scalp is itchy. So, am I wetting my hair too much and making too much of a moist environment on top!”?
U gotta spritz ur scalp too. Make sure ur using conditioner and messaging ur scalp with it. I would hope ur condiitioner is natural & silicone free & fragrance free.
Hair steamer and deep conditioning is somewhat of a new thing. I don't steam at all; I deep condition once a month. Thanks for this info. Btw mom has never deep condition neither steamed my hair growing up and my hair was thick and healthy. Back2basics. Thank you for this informative vid.
my hair does this and I could never figure out why. I don't steam but I will leave a deep conditioner on for way too long. This happens way too much in the front of my head and middle. I just don't get it.
I've had clients that have used it from other stylists when they got color... It don't work their hair was still damage and the color still needed to get cut off after some time
Hey Narada, Can clarifying shampoos strip the hair of protein? Should you do a light-protein treatment or get a conditioner with protein in it after clarifying?
Hey, I have really bad heat damaged ends due to silk pressing my hair every week to every other week over the course of a few months. I don't know if I should cut my hair or to keep try to transition my hair back to its healthier state. I just recently trimmed my ends and I'm seeing different types of split ends throughout the shaft of my hair( straight pieces). What should I do?
It's a personal decision. If it's causing more harm to your healthy hair then it's imperative that you let it go. You will need to keep close watch and care of your hair before you make your decision
People who "heat train" their hair purposely damage the hair so it's looser and easier for them to maintain. Imo don't do it. It's a big chop waiting to happen lol

AfrikanHairGod it is true, its going on. would you recommend just conditioning mid week instead?

Wow I thought doing it once a week was too much. Now I'm just doing every 2 weeks
Deep conditioner 2x a week...Wow that's too much...
Google and UA-cam scholars take note, his professional degree and license trumps your search engine search.
Exactly...

Makes sense! I used to dump loads of coconut oil on my hair and sleep. My hair was effed up!
Yes! The first and last time I pre poo "overnight" with coconut this happened 3 years ago. Never again.

Also, although I only used Rice Water 3 Times last Year, that might have also contributed to my Issue. I have thin Strands, so I believe I just did too much and my Hair just couldn't bounce back. Again, thank you for sharing your wisdom!!!
Thank you for the video I never used a steamer but it's nice to know the information 💜 your skin looks great by the way 💜💜💜
LOL, this throwback popped up on my recommended!
Good points. Shampoo, condition, a little grease and style. I think keeping it simple makes hair care a whole lot easier. 😁
This was great. You should do a vid on using too many products at one time and what basics everyone should have. I think people equate the feel of their chemically processed or heat treated hair to their natural hair.
Agreed..... Also when you don’t wash your hair with shampoo and piling moisture products on it...
Kelsey just said she used to Deep Condition twice a week & they tend to Deep Condition overnight.
doThatGWalk I saw that and people will do it because they have length. I’ve noticed the bad advice for years. At this point I watch them for entertainment, not hair advice.
@@thethirdeyejourney3530 exactly lol. Plus their hair type is like a Silky 3C, so it's a whole different thing from type 4.
doThatGWalk I mean the hair type shouldn’t matter when you’re licensed. The problem is they don’t practice. They just damage their hair with heat and then damage it further by trying to push a process that can’t be pushed. Then they sell it to us as healthy hair. I have a super similar hair type. Their methods tore my hair up 😂😂
@@thethirdeyejourney3530 lol, very true.
That's true it does literally feel mushy
What protein shampoo are you using?
Yes I love your honesty... KEEP IT SIMPLE EVERYONE.
You so right about everything you talkin about very knowledgeable I like listening to your videos❤
I once thought my hair was over conditioned. Upon changing my regimen it was buildup. 😕 lol
What did you use to get rid of your buildup?
I started clarifying once a month. My shampoo of choice is Kinky Curly Come Clean. I also lightened up my leave ins. Used to leave in my rinse out.
I know I have some Elasticity & Heat damage. I haven't heard much of Elasticity damage though.
Moisture Overload.... That happened to me when I was a teen.
I definitely agree with your explanation and recommendation 😁😊😁
I see what you are saying, and thank you for being straight up. For me I noticed my hair will get limp straight. When I do a protein/henna/rhausoul clay I alternate my dc. I shampoo and dc once week. And go to my stylist for my trims and braids and twist. When I’m not doing wash n go
Great video! I look forward to your videos. You're so knowledgeable and explain the issue clearly. Thanks for sharing with us.
So informative...I know this happen to me and I ended up cutting a lot of hair off, I use to dc overnight, but not anymore
I love my steamer but I do not use every week. Maybe each other week but nothing more. Plus I also don't sit under it for more than 20 minutes maybe even less.
I believe I commented on your streamer video. My steamer almost ruined my hair.
Teach! Same thing happened to me with steaming. I stopped using heat for one year and it looked like I had a completely different head of hair.
Thanks so much for this informative video. I really enjoyed it.
Like you say just do the basics!!!
Hi AfrikanHairGod you can try FENUGREEK in your clients hair, if they are not sensitive to it.
I learned the hard way. Turned my hair to mush early on in my hair journey by over moisturizing.
I know more about the structure of hair now and how to keep a good moisture/protein balance and after a 2nd big chop I’m on the right track with flourishing hair. It was a mess though!
How did you get your hair back to normal ?
I enjoy seeing you tell use about hair
Omg...YASS...this is exactly what was going on with me...
I have said this before.
Love you! Always full of knowledge !!
Preach on it!
Can you do a video on ceramides & high porosity hair? No one talks about ceramides :(
True! I read that it can help Hi-Po hair, but I’d like Narada’s professionnal advice on it
I shampoo and DC once a week, and alternate between one that is a combo protein and moisturizer and one that is just a moisturizing DC. Also once a week I just co-wash to restyle my wash-n-go. I don't use heat, steamers, or any of the fad type natural hair processes, and I finger detangle. That seems to be working well for me. I know you can't see my hair or anything, but does that seem like a reasonable routine?
Very informative as always....Thanks for the tips
Excellent video!
Always good solid information
I have a steamer and use it to deep condition. How often do you suggest I deep condition with my steamer and for how many minutes?
Thanks for sharing. As usual, very informative.......
Thanks so much for Sharing! Good information!
Thank you 🌺
I have very fine 2c-3a hair, I put only conditioner in my hair as a moisturizer.
Too much of a good thing is a thing.
The problem is that you don't know when it's too much until it's too late.
Wearing a bun for majority of the time I noticed overtime lost my wavy/curl pattern. Any tips on how to gain my hair structure back would be helpful🙂
Nova Nova Try a protein treatment once a month or every 6 weeks , and hopefully you will get your structure back
Olaplex
Awesome video💜💜💜💜
Great video! Thoughts on Olaplex for the hair? Does it help with elasticity? Is it worth the hype?
I've had clients that have used it from other stylists when they got color... It don't work their hair was still damage and the color still needed to get cut off after some time
Hey Narada,
Can clarifying shampoos strip the hair of protein? Should you do a light-protein treatment or get a conditioner with protein in it after clarifying?
No. It just strips the oils
Right 👍👏❤
9:06 I know that's right.
What is your opinion of Heat Training Vs. Heat Damage? Are they the same thing?
Lol yes. The exact same thing.
People who "heat train" their hair purposely damage the hair so it's looser and easier for them to maintain. Imo don't do it. It's a big chop waiting to happen lol
