Stripping down the hair regimen to just shampoo, conditioner, and oil is the BEST way to find out what actually makes a difference to your hair. I discovered that pre-poo, leave-in, and deep conditioner all make a difference but not all are necessary! ALSO, a stripped down routine helps you figure out what hair is supposed to feel like. I think I spent a lot of time thinking my hair was dry because it wasn’t soft. My hair can be well hydrated and not feel like silk or cotton. I think that’s the most important thing I learned.

That’s my hair it’s moisturized but not soft. I wash and deep condition and moisturize. Oil alone isn’t enough for my hair.

Yeah in the past if I just shampoo, condition, oil and skip the leave-in that my hair looks dry and doesn't feel soft, which is why I feel the need to reach for a leave-in conditioner. It makes my hair feel softer. I never realized that just because your hair is not soft doesn't mean that its dry and not moisturized. Thanks for giving me that perspective.

I needed this so much because when I think about it, when I was a little girl with natural hair all my Mom did was shampoo, condition and put oil or grease on my scalp massage and either braid or put it in ponytails and my hair flourished. So I'm going back to the basics, no more 4-5 hour wash days, accumulating more products than I can use in a year (if I washed everyday) and wasting money. Thank you so much for this. I watched with tears in my eyes cause I was about to give up. Thank you for the life line ❤️💕💕❤️

THANK YOU!! While I can see the need for it for some people (perhaps), I think it is over emphasized. I think the most important thing for people is to first and foremost learn about HAIR! Period. Hair is hair is hair. Different characteristics, yes. But at the end of the day, it is all hair. No one attribute is enough for someone to "fix" your hair woes. Learn about hair as a whole and adapt that information to how YOUR hair behaves. You just have to start from scratch, keep it simple and go from there. It all works together. Density, texture, length, porosity. etc. So at the end of the day, it's like chasing ones tail running around for porosity or curl pattern and what not. Hair stylists are not asking you what your porosity is when you come into the salon. They use the right techniques and products based on their understanding of HAIR. Somehow no one on UA-cam has normal porosity. Everybody has either low or high. Ugh!

  • @timothyc.8666

It all makes sense once you compared it to the hair typing system. Hair is hair is hair is hair. Period. Divide and conquer has done a number on the natural hair community (and any other polarized groups of people for that matter). The logic just isn't there because there simply isn't much being put out. I know I'm unqualified to do hair yet I'm observing and imitating other unqualified people experiment and spit out random information on hair rather than a) identifying the true professionals and b) following the expertise that makes concrete, logical sense (not all licensed professionals are making sense either). Sounds crazy written out but this is the madness that exists. I'm glad I found your Back 2 Basics videos. Learning about porosity had me stressing out for these last 7 months and now I can lay it to rest completely. I will also only make MY hair care journey about ME and not what other people are doing. THANK YOU!

The curl pattern system doesn't work because most people have more than one texture of hair on their heads. My curls were tighter in the middle and looser towards the edges. Yet the edges locked faster than the middle. Since you have different textures, would you use different products for each section? That's what creates product junkies.

  • @TextureLove

I think the biggest reason why porosity is so confusing is because all of these porosity tests don't truly work. Knowing my porosity really helped me understand why the heck my hair was always getting dry so easily no matter how much water I drank or how much I tried to care for my hair. I just played around until I figured out the characteristics about my hair to figure out what I needed to moisturize it with cause every type of product isn't for my hair which is hard to admit b/c I am a proud product junkie (LOL). These float tests are really confusing because they're not true tests that work, so it makes things a lot more confusing.

I “buy” into curl pattern because it helped me accept how my hair acts. I spent so much time trying to get that zigzag pattern in the crown area to match the cute spiral curls in the kitchen area. I then said I have different patterns that react and look differently and kept it moving. I have about 4 pattens in my hair and I just say “okay each area of my hair looks different”.

Cause I was told my hair was high porosity and the advice was to use heavy oils and butters constantly and always do protein treatments, to mosturize and seal almost everyday, and to cowash. Come to find out I got product buildup and my hair got dry and brittle!! And I actually needed to be doing the OPPOSITE of what I was taught. And now my hair retains moisture better and is softer and actually growing. I feel like I've been hoodwinked and bamboozled and most of my natural hair journey I was mislead by almost everyone.

High Porosity means your hair cuticles are open, meaning water comes and goes.
Low Porosity means your cuticles are closed. It's takes awhile for the water to come through and once water locks in it's in and takes along time to dry.
Medium Porosity means is in the middle. Open enough for the water to get through and close enough to hold on to moisture.

One thing learning about my hair porosity I learned that I can’t let my hair get dry, because it is so much work to get it moisturized. So I have to stay on top that. And I learned to use less product. I agree 💯% about the strip down. I’m down to shampoo and conditioner as the only two necessary products. The most interesting thing I’ve learned recently is that clean hair is the most important thing, because otherwise no product is going to work.

*Good morning Narada♥I grew up where my natural hair was considered 'nappy'. Seriously, my Mom would yank and pull at the knots and have me in tears. Let's not get into the straightening comb and Vigorols she used to make things easier for her, not me. I grew up in the era of Afro Sheen honey...YEEEESSS!!*
*Honestly, who came up with the term 'porosity'? People were only concerned with what worked for their hair and scalp being clean and that was it...especially my sisters and brothers. I've known folks to use whatever they had and this included bar soaps or dish detergents. As long as there was something to moisturize it, petro jelly, hair grease, Crisco...LOL!! I know what works for me and I may try something because you or maybe one other recommended it but that still doesn't mean it's a great product for me. People have to understand, pleasse correct me if I'm wrong, ALL HAIR PRODUCTS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL.*

I dont know if to much importance is placed on porosity but on learning a little about porosity i changed from using cold water to warm water which i had forgotten my mom actually did when i was young and my hair is dry no more really but i agree with you we have to learn our hair and WE DO TOO MUCH WITH IT OUR HANDS ALWAYS IN OUR HAIR. The more i put my hands in my hair the more it breaks. I wash once a month or longer and my hair loves it i am in my fifties went back natural around 50 my second attempt and like you i agree shampoo the cheaper the better sometimes coditioner and greese or oil.

I agree. I have found it not so easy to even FIND cheap shampoo. In the store yesterday and saw that those shampoos have been replaced with shampoos with labels like color protectant, moisturizing, strengthening, anti breakage, protein formula, etc.
But, yes, old fashioned water and grease is where it's AT!

I stripped my hair routine down too. I use a shampoo bar, a conditioner, an oil, and mousse. The oil is mainly a prepoo. That's it. I love rinsing my hair every other day or 3 days. I shampoo on the fourth or fifth day. My hair isn't dry anymore or tangles anymore. No more expensive shit anymore. I'll occasionally use just an oil for like a week.

The only thing that changed the game for me understanding if my hair will like a product or not is whether there is ANY type of protein in it, how thick the product is, and whether or not there is glycerin or coconut oil high up in the ingredients list. If all of these things are absent then 9 times out of 10 my hair will like it.

Knowing my hair is high porosity did help because most youtubers are low. I thought that my hair was damaged or there was something wrong with the product I'm using. I DIDN'T even know i had a loose curl pattern. I came across high porosity girls using thick products and less water. My hair look drastically different trying their methods. Which by the way i would of never figured out on my own. In the past i was using spray leave ins and working on soaking wet hair. Obviously water evaporates easily out my hair leaving it dry. I didn't understand that my sealing products were too light. Also would be still cutting up my hair thinking there is something wrong with it. Now it's shiny, soft, and finally retaining length.

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  3 роки тому +2

That's the interesting thing.... You ever notice how most people claim that they are low porosity? There are a few people that claim high porosity and almost NO ONE identifies with normal? It wasn't the porosity that helped you, it was you learning and understanding your hair and its needs. You had drier hair that just needed heavier products.
What you are saying is almost like the equivalent of saying I thought I was 4a, but then I started doing what people with 4c Hair was doing and it worked for me, therefore I must be 4c. You just found methods, processes and techniques that happen to work for you as well as people with 4c Hair.

  • @eclipsejamie09

I appreciate your video because I use to be one of those people you spoke of. Now I do know I have low porosity hair and all I need is some heat to open my cuticles to absorb moisture. Now rather that is 100% fact idk. All I know it makes a difference in my hair. Added protein is a no for me. Not because I read it but because I fell asleep with a protein heavy conditioner by accident and I ended up with a mangled hay stack. Keep the videos up and urge people to listen to their OWN hair.

    Hi. Love your videos.
My stylist also recommended that I use your method of Clarifying shampoo then a Moisturizing shampoo after cause I always get build up at the root of my hair for most washes no matter how much/little product I use. And that's it. She said otherwise I need to "play" with my hair to figure out everything else cause I can't be at her salon cause I'm not in the same country as her. I really appreciate that you're being straight up about that even as a stylist instead of saying you need to do steps 6-9 in method x for type q hair. Keep it up.

😂😂😂 Yes! The porosity thing had me like 🤔. I swore I knew my “porosity” about two years into my journey which was last year 🤭🤫😂.This year I was like I don’t know man heck with it this is getting too complicated. I just go with how my hair feels at the time if it feels like it needs moisture I apply it, if it feels like it need strength I just use a deep conditioner for strength and I’m done. Moisturize and strength conditioner as I need it the end I’m out and it works my hair is bra strap length and healthy if it keeps growing cool if not that’s cool to but all the extra is ridiculous. That’s why so many ppl falling off they are making it too complicated and frustrating ppl.
