Thank you to everyone for sharing your thoughts and experiences with this topic. I tend to stay in my little bubble here on my CHANNEL, because I'm tired of constantly having to fight against years of indoctrinated misinformation of natural hair care. I have a wealth of knowledge and experience with natural hair and it has been my life passion and joy ever since I first saw the beauty of my own hair and what it was capable of. Sometimes, I believe that tends to get overshadowed by my personality, vulgarity, and fun shade but I'm happy and willing to share to those that are willing to receive it.
Please share this video so we all can have a proper discussion where we all are able to accurately delineate and make informed decisions when it comes to what you decide to do with your hair.
I see that I have quite a number of new subscribers from this video. For those of you that liked this video enough to subscribe, I offer you a disclaimer to understand that I am not your typical UA-cam content creator and I'm not like any other natural hair stylist. I speak my mind and speak my words with conviction and freedom of expression. If you don't like cursing and derogatory language, if you don't like long videos, or if you unwilling to question and relinquish what you *think* you know about natural hair care, I may not be the channel for you. For everyone else, on behalf of our tribesmen, I you welcome to our AFRO TRIBE!

      Hi,
I'm glad you addressed this. I am a licensed cosmetologist and I am natural. I use oil and butters on myself and my clients. I watched a couple of those stylist and there is a lot of misinformation. One stylist said you only have sebaceous glands on your scalp and I was like🤔. Your body has sebaceous glands everywhere, there are More on the scalp than anywhere on the body. The detox states use no products with oil or butter in the first 5 ingredients. Everyone's hair is different. I did receive some knowledge from watching the trend. Thank you❤

So generally it's well known that oils help the hair & skin. That doesn't mean people walk out of the house on a daily basis w hair or skin slathered w oil. I am not a hair professional, but I have a science background. My main issue is the claim of this trend being based on "scientific fact", I feel it is very misleading. We don't throw around such claims without research to back it. I touched on this in the video I made. When I tried the method, I didn't like it. But that's just me. I think some of the science that people are claiming that this challenge has is the fact that many Black people believe that their kinky or curly hair doesn’t produce as much natural oils when in reality it does and with the detox it helps people learn more about how much natural oil their hair produces on its own. (At least that’s one thing I’ve been listening to). Many ppl want to learn about how their hair works naturally without so much product and in return find the things that their hair needs working on. (What’s causing the breakage in their edges, or why isn’t their crown area growing as much, what’s causing a bald spot somewhere, why is their hair so frizzy and more). I’m not for or against this challenge I think whatever works for someone is what’s best for them. But experimenting with your hair to learn more about it is a great idea.

Thanks for the video. Personally I feel the reason many see they are having success from the no oil method is because they are finally washing their hair more, with shampoo. Also, I feel like many were probably going overboard with the amount of oil they used, only a few drops per section are needed in my opinion. I only wear wash and gos myself, and although it's not like my hair will fall apart if I don't use oil, I definitely see an improvement in my hair from lightly applying oil during my wash and go process.

I’ve been avoiding the trendy videos about this topic. I discovered earlier this year that I was doing too much with oils and not enough cleansing. At the beginning of my hair journey I was using hella oil and Shea butter “to seal” in the moisture, since that’s what I learned on yt. But my hair was always so dull and dry. One time I had a really good cleansing session and saw an instant difference in my hair. It made me realize that I had been dealing with product build up and that the oils and butter were just sitting in layers on my strands. I started cleansing regularly and clarifying when needed. Now I only use a leave in and a botanical gel and my curls are always so defined and shiny with minimal product. I take a little bit of mango butter (Shea is too heavy) rub in my hands and put just enough on my ends (not going overboard like before). Hair is so healthy now , it’s a major difference. Shea butter also makes my hair poofy, mango defines it. I do use oils still but strategically and don’t leave them on for long. I may massage some in my scalp the night before my wash day. Or a quick hot oil treatment right before I wash my hair. I’m not drenching myself in oils and butters. At some point I was even using a Shea butter based shampoo , what a nightmare for my strands. I thought I was really doing something lol I noticed my hair is picky too, it just works better with certain oils vs others . my hair actually gets shiny if I use Argan oil, anything else kind of makes it look dull

One girl stated that if you style your hair with oils it will prevent your hair from receiving any moisture like if you’re outside and it’s humid your hair wouldn’t take in any of that moisture. If your hair is so dry that you’re depending on the humidity for moisture there’s definitely something else going on in the styling regimen.

  • @sart1348
    @sart1348 3 роки тому +60

I think you said the key things pretty early on in the video.
Do naturals *need* raw oils, butters or grease? No. As they don't provide hold on their own, they can build up making it *harder* (not impossible) for water to get into the strands and and of course disrupt the ability for other stylers to work. You also make a great point about manipulation (or lack of manipulation) and hair memory! Thank you for that.
Do they have benefits/things that ppl enjoy? Yes. Primarily shine esp if the hair has a natural dull surface ppl may crave that...and to another extent lubrication/feel...
Luckily oils/butters are in all the products we use...shampoo, conditioners and often our stylers.
I think these stylists are just attempting to cut out extra steps, simplify the routine and give reliable results... at the salon but most importantly at home, for clients to be able to manage their own hair. And it applies for wash & gos but also twists/flat twists/braids/cornrows (twisted out or left in). Different products are reccomended depending on the style.
Layering gels is also another interesting thing that comes down to your climate, your desired look and longevity of style.
I think if everyone comes at the information shared at face value and everyone asks questions in 5 years from now natural hair won't be so contentious.
However we are creatures of habit and so I am interested to see the journey evolve and play out. I'm closely watching the product developer space and how they adopt or don't adopt what is being said right now. I'm also looking at the products that are moving units in the hair store.
    Thanks for your video.

Fantastic video! I think the styling outcome a person is looking for should help dictate what products to use. I’m currently trying this method and from my personal experience it seems like a great way to hit “reset” on the hair. If you’re not sure what technique or product is causing your hair not to reach the goals or style you desire it helps deeply cleanse the hair so you can start over. I’ve previously used oils (not too many butters) in a balanced way and always pair my cleansing products (shampoos) with the method I chose to style my hair in. For example, if I choose to use a heavy butter or grease, I make sure to use a sulphate or clarifying shampoo to properly cleanse the hair. I love your approach to this subject. “Less is more!”Haircare isn’t a one size fits all because there are a myriad of factors that contribute to the regimen a person should create to achieve the results they want. This is just another trend to keep Natural Hair UA-cam interesting remember: Anti Coconut Oil, Wash n Go Only, No Poo, Hella Long Wash Days for No Reason, doing hella Protein Treatments, and now the No Oil Movement, etc. I tried to cut out oils and butter and do the "wash n go" lifestyle. However, styling just took me longer without it. Keeping my hair stretched with some oils and butter works for me personally.

thank you for pointing out that most of these stylists saying “no butters/oils” are pretty much only offering guidance on curl definition. i started to move away from curl definition because i personally feel like it teeters into texturism (ie. only getting compliments when my hair is defined). idk how helpful it is when i just want to put my hair in a protective style or do not care to define it. also, when i had used to have sisterlocks, i rarely used conditioner or oils (usually used one or both when i’d get them retightened). on my own, it was just a good weekly (or every few days) shampoo and a spray bottle of water between washes. i also no longer suffered from bad dandruff, which i experienced prior, but especially when my hair was relaxed.

It’s funny because a lot of people who support the movement are also licensed professionals. My problem with them is they act as if no one can disagree with them and all professionals feel the same and we are dumb for following UA-cam and they are anti UA-cam trends. But I know a lot of pros like yourself don’t agree. They act as if all hair can follow that rule and point out their experience to say yes everyone’s hair is different but some things are universal. They HATE when you say “do whatever works for you”. I think the main point is that you can do two different methods and come out with great results and that everyone’s desired results aren’t the SAME! Also like you said they specialize one type of hair styling. They fail to realize that not everyone wants to only do their hair like that and I feel like they think that’s the only way you should be wearing your hair. And I hate it. They don’t realize that they can be just as bad as the people they aren’t trying to be.

i love your response to this it was very impartial . and i love how you talked about how you used hair grease and oils with certain styles . that totally makes sense . people were acting like their hair was gonna fall out if they use oils . now personally i don’t use raw oils and butters . and i go to a curl specialist (i think that’s what some of them who specialize in wash and go’s will call themselves vs. a natural hair stylist because that can encompass a lot of different jobs that they do not do) . i was a slatherer of oils and shea butter with absolutely no knowledge of why . i just thought that my hair felt dry so it needed something to make it feel soft . but my hair stylist helped me to realize my hair doesn’t have to feel a certain way to be “moisturized”. i also did not wash my hair very frequently . so i think the no oil and butter message is for people like me who had absolutely no idea what they were doing and why . the real essence of styling hair whether it’s a wash and go or a twisted up do or a protective style is to wash, condition, and style . and with whatever style i do in the future since i am a wash and go girl right now - i will forever apply that process . i would always skip the wash but that’s such an important part !

I did use a wooden brush on my hair, which ripped out my hair from nape to front and I had de tangled before brushing it. The brush felt like my scalp was being massaged but the hair loss I experienced ….YIKES I use a clarifying shampoo as needed. When I tried sulphur 8 to regrow my hair it made my scalp itch so bad I had to wash it out🥹

I’m sooooooo glad you made this video! I’ve been thinking about this topic and after every video response or reaction response I kept thinking 🤔 is no one taking into consideration what style you are trying to achieve???? I’m pretty sure the BGC are wash n go stylist, most people doing wash n go’s don’t use a lot of oils and butter we use gel and foams. Also clarifying the hair regularly also helps with moisture retention, I’m a wash n go kinda girl but I love me some avocado oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil. I felt like it was misleading to people struggling with their hair to proclaim something as bad when it’s not it’s just the way products need to be used

Hmm, this is just a theory of mines, however, I believe this trend might partially be a money saving concept for natural hair stylist who specializes in wash-and-gos. If you arrive to the salon with heavy products in your hair, the stylist is then forced to layer multiple applications of shampoo to clarify the hair strands. This leads to the stylist or the salon to spend more funds on shampoo or restoration treatments for the multiple clients they see daily. Of course, if they are seeking for the best curl formation and definition, I am quite sure that they want to achieve that look in the most efficient time possible while using less in-house products from their inventory. If I am correct, I feel as though this No oils/butters concept should have been directly communicated to their immediate clientele and not to the masses of people in the natural hair community. Yes, there is a lesson to be learned which is washing the hair more frequently, however oils and butters should not be deemed as something negative. Please let me know if I am incorrect with the product theory as I am not hairstylist.
It would be nice to know what stylist pain points or grievances are when it comes to inventory and cost.

@@dorothymontrose6371 Yes, this have been mentioned before in the past but the only reason why this method is taking off now is because of the blunt and assertive tone one particular stylist addressed the method on Twitter. Her tone was almost of frustration from having to deal with clients who misuses oils and butters. Stylist have a right to present an alternative, and if that is working for those who misused oils and butters, great! But let's just call a spade a spade. Coming into the salon with almost squeaky clean hair equals less product application and less time at the bowl. I honestly think this method is to improve salon culture. If someone primarily does their hair at home and is able to grow healthy waist length hair by properly applying oils and butters (which has been proven throughout the 10+ years of UA-camrs and non-influencers who grew their hair to that length), this method is not for them. This is why the stylists should have focused on the specific sector of the natural hair community that simply misused oils or their immediate clientele.

From another angle....Yes, it is a money saving strategy for the stylist. Because the client spends less money on other products and therefore have that extra money to spend with the stylist - be it more visits to their salon or buying the stylists' products instead of other brands. So the winner is the stylist. Of course they are pushing the "No Oils/No Butters" trend because it benefits them the most. 🤔

I’ve been using Shea butter on my hair for years, it’s helped my hair grow so much. It makes my hair soft, stretches out my shrinkage, helps me detangle my hair, and seals in moisture for my long term protective styles. Because it does so much, shea butter also helps me keep my hair routine minimal, and it’s one of only 3 products that I use and have been using for the last 5 years.

They also say don't use RAW oils and butters on the hair. They emphasized that for the detox which lasts for 30 days as people often use inferior products incorrectly and too much of it. It is to reset the hair. The products they suggest that people use already have the oils/butters in them, so their point is using raw oils causes certain results in the hair, and why use them if you are purchasing a high-quality product that already has them in them. In their eyes, the product has a job to do, and if you are going to spend money on the product, it should be able to the job it's supposed to do, if you have to add steps, or things daily/restyling, not only are you wasting your money, you are also wasting your time. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Also their style of choice is the WNG. Their advice is for WNG. I have been doing this now for over a year and a half. It's not a trend, as most people think it is basic hair care routine. They have been doing this for years, before YT was a thing. The fact that people are now ‘discovering it’ and discovering it incorrectly I might add, just leads to how misinformation is prevalent in these internet streets.
      Their advice is very simple:
Shampoo and Condition and style every 7-10 days
      Use high-quality products
      Technique matters
Learn how to apply the product correctly
      Be consistent.
