    I think comparing our hair to our skin and the process of moisturizing our skin after a shower was a good analogy. If I understand correctly you're saying water by itself isn't moisturizing our hair it's only hydrating it, but water plus oils and emollients is moisturizing because it hydrates and has ingredients that prevent or slow the rate of water (hydration) loss from the hair.

    Narada,
    Let your videos be as long as they need to be. That’s what’s wrong with our society that has a short attention span. I am guilty of that. I told my hair stylist that i was frustrated that my hair was always dry. She reiterated to me that my hair wasn’t dry at all. I just don’t truly know my hair, and it doesn’t look the way i “expect” it to i guess. Also my hair is naturally a dark reddish brown, so it looks “dusty” sometimes because of the color. Great video ♥️

    Please don’t apologize for the flow of the video. I like videos like this cause at the end we still got what we needed and then some. But yes I watched your video years ago with you explaining moisturized hair is a behavior and not a feeling. It actually made me pay attention to my hair more and I realized what I thought was a dry feeling was just my hair texture because the “behavior” of my hair was still pliable and when I pulled on my hair it bounced back. I think people are so used to their hair being so coated in product that when it’s not they just feel their hair isn’t moisturized.

    The video was clearly articulated and the points gave great direction on what to look for when we study our hair for maximum hydration and performance. Less product, your hair has it's own memory and will not mirror the next head of hair and look more for hair behavior and not a feeling. Less is more.

    The comparison to wet skin out the shower and hair was a perfect breakdown for me to understand this better. It makes perfect sense if I don't moisturize my skin It begins to get tight and dry and in some areas crack especially when its cold. So if this is whats happening to my hair it all makes sense. I have realized the less i do the better my hair is. My next issue i need to solve is why my scalp is so itcy. I dont have dandruff and I dont have a bounce of product in my hair. At this point im thinking it's an internal issue rather then something im doing wrong on the outside. Thanks for all your videos and knowledge. Your doing a great thing.

    I have hair that is coarse in texture, its just what it is so I don't fuss about it feeling silky and hydrated all the time. Its very defined when wet and wash and go'ed but best believe in a couple of days it will feel parched lol so I just spritz it with pure distilled water and it's hydrated but still feels coarse, it is what it is! We move on 👍🏽

      My hair is naturally high porosity so it's not going to have a nice smoothed cuticle unless I slather it in products. Which I don't do because I don't want a heavy build-up and it's wasteful for me to coat my hair in that much when it doesn't need it. My trichologists convinced me to give up a lot of styling products so I know my hair doesn't need to be smooth and shiny daily or weekly. It only needs to be soft and flexible for me to know that it isn't dried out. My stylist likes the smooth and the shiny. Lol! But he uses his special techniques and minimal product to get that on my curls. I can't even remember the last time I used edge control on my hair. I use it on my wigs. lol!

    I often wonder if people are truly getting their hair properly cleansed. I'm one of the ones who hopped on the water only washing bandwagon but I did come away with learning how my hair was supposed to feel due to not using any product on my hair for a length of time. When I eased back in to using products I was hyper aware of how my hair felt coated with different types of products, how it felt when it was properly cleansed, and how it felt when it needed to be cleansed. Had I not experimented with water only washing I don't think I would have truly understood my hair on this deep of a level.

    Hello, am currently going through your videos as someone who previously followed Black Girl Curls approach to haircare. I noticed that in many videos, you explain how people will use products to mask the true texture of their hair. That dryness is a behavior, not a feeling and we should examine how our hair behaves. But then you’ll also talk about how moisturized hair feels soft and has a sheen to it, even though tightly coiled hair tends to be more rough (don’t love that word for our hair, but you use it in the video and it works) as well as matte. So my questions are, 1) how do you make sense of embracing tight textured hair when moisturized hair seems to describe something our hair isn’t, I.e. shiny and soft. 2) in your comprehensive cosmetology playlist, you say humectants retain water/are moisturizing. In this video, you echo that at around 17:30. But it seems you’ve proven humectant based gels can’t do this?😭 that emollients from an oil/grease/leave in are necessary for hair to be moisturized, so could you clarify? If moisturizers slow rate of water evaporation/hold onto water longer, and humectants do this, what makes humectant based gels so different from say a grease when referring to moisturized hair?
    If these questions have been answered, I apologize and will keep watching videos. Am only 8ish hours in to your videos. I know you repeat yourself a lot, and do not want to contribute to the labor you already have piled on your plate. So please feel free to not answer if this was already addressed.

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  3 роки тому +20

      Thank you for sharing your experience. It may be that your hair doesn't require as much to retain moisture (TRUE low porosity) than some others and for you the conditioner is adequate enough. I do have some clients that don't need much of any additional products to maintain moisture as well. Imagine if you were someone that smothered their hair with moisturizers, butters, oils, etc. all the time....it would be so difficult for you to see just how minimal was needed for your hair because you use products as a routine instead of for purpose. This is what I want the main takeaway to be from this video.

    I didn't know much about conditioner (and I plan to go watch your cosmetology 101 video and keep learning some more key basics!) and because of that, I was feeling a little wary about my decision to not use/rarely use conditioner for the past two years.
    I found that my hair does so much better without it. It's manageable and strong and moisturized without conditioner.
    It was interesting and a relief to finally learn, from this video, a bit more about what conditioner is really best used for.
    I had always thought it was the KEY to moisture and that I somehow getting by miraculously without it 🤣

      Conditioner comes in so many forms honestly. Many of the moisturizers, leave ins, use similar ingredients as rinse or conditioners. Oils, butters, and hair grease also serves as conditioners (the coat, protect, and have softening properties to hair) which is why I don't use rinse outs on my sisters locs.

    I realized climate/weather change play a huge role in the moisture retention of my hair. This is the first time I’ve worn my hair out consistently in the winter and realized I couldn’t get away with certain things like I can for other seasons. I still don’t need oil (I used to think sealing with oil was necessary until I started doing consistent wash and goes) but I needed products that were more emollient rich. Certain stylers make my hair feel too soft or wet in the summer due to humidity but work perfectly in the winter. It’s crazy how much the environment can affect your hair/how hair products perform on your hair.

      @@PrettyPenny1234 I personally like slip because it minimizes breakage and tangles for me. Lack of slip can lead to matting but someone who isn’t as tangle prone as me may not have the same issues. Everything you said was 100% accurate. I have 4B, high porosity hair. I use to slap on products on my hair without sealing the hair, yet wondered why my hair felt dry after a day. I also didn't use a protein in my wash day. My hair was always dry despite my attempts to hydrate it and reapply products (that did not seal). It didn't take long for my hair to break, and need a big chop. Two years ago I stopped all of those bad habits. I stopped buying styling creams, and started to make my own diy products. I made a shea butter mix for sealing, and an aloe vera moisturizing spray. I also learned how to do a low maintenance hairstyle to keep my hands out of my head. This really helped me to see how the hair reacted to the butter and regular hydration. I also incorporated a protein in my wash day. My hair grew out from a pixie cut to neck length, and the crown is florishing for the first time. All I needed was shea butter, castor oil and water. LOL You're so right, you have to observe and feel the hair. You can't just throw a bunch of things at the problem without assessing the problem. Thank you for the video.🙏🏿❤🤗

I keep my hands out of my hair for as long as possible. I wash my hair every two weeks, so I need a product with protein to help with moisture retention. I bought L'ORÉAL Elaine Total Repair 5 Protein Recharge. I plan to use it once in the second week when my hair starts to get dry (I don't want protein over load, so I'll only use it once). I also liked the description of things to look for on order to get an idea of how my hair behaves it dry vs when it has moisturizer and how to learn to watch my hair in its natural state to see how it responds. I'm keeping it simple with just soaking it with water letting it absorb then applying oil. I do this ever other day and washing maybe every three weeks, probably should wash more frequently but I don't want to do too much to my hair as I'm starting to learn it and Im lazy😜 . Try it and see. The needs of your hair ever changing. Also think about not only what you are putting on your hair but also what you are doing to it. Are their any processes that may sap moisture out of your hair? If the shampoo and pink lotion isn't enough perhaps your hair is deficient in moisture or protein. I recommend trying a treatment using the aphogee 2 min reconstructor (not the 2-step)

    • @marleyhill34
      @marleyhill34 3 роки тому

      If my hair is brittle, I increase misting and steaming my hair. If that doesn't work then I clarify and chelate my hair because it could be due to build up. I'm high porosity with ultra-fine hair so protein hardly makes my hair brittle/dry.

    So basically, the conditioner completes the hydration process/starts the moisturizing process while leave in conditioners(with emolliants and humectants), oils/butters, and/or creams complete.
    Someone please tell black girl curls; they tell people rinse out conditioner is enough to finish the moisturizing process...then go straight in with a styler, preferably a gel or mousse which we all know isnt the most moisturizing.

      Someone told me that the moisturizer had been discontinued now that I think about it. You can add in any other products that you deem necessary for styling along with the ultra sheen. It mixes well with just about everything so long as you are light with it

    The beard is looking so lush and luxurious. Oops I deep condition my hair every week. 🙈🙈🙈🙈 Caveat: I do so on the recommendation of my trichologists. They provide 6 products only. Shampoo, deep conditioner, leave in watery lotion-like detangler, leave in heavy cream-like conditioner, scalp mist and scalp gel. No stylers, no oils, no butters, no brushes, no diys, no cornrows, no brushes. Steam with hot towel daily. It works for me. 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ And it cuts down my routine significantly. I have way less products now than when I started my natural hair journey in 2009.

    Nutrition. My skin and hair improved with daily vitamins and a better diet. Also consistency. Going gung ho one week about your haircare and then forgetting about it for the next two weeks won’t yield long-term results.
    You’ve also got to take care of your scalp conditions. If you know you get dermatitis, eczema, dandruff whatever you’ve got to manage it. Healthy hair isn’t growing through all that.

    Thank you for this video and I say repetition is good. I notice my hair is dry when the hair looks "spider webby," and it snaps. That's how I know it is dry and it also sticks out everywhere. I am now trying to pay more attention how it looks and feels before, during and after it is washed. I have gone w/out putting products on my hair after a wash and thought I was going to lose ALL my hair, but I was mistaken. I got use to putting products on after washing, but that ONE time when I ran out of time to finish my hair, I noticed my hair was dry, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. However, that is always not the case.

    Okay, I have been waiting all day to share this information with you. So I would like to say, you are very knowledgeable and really pay attention to black hair. I mean literally. You look at all the specifics. And you come with knowledge from a scientific perspective which is extremely helpful. I remember that video and said it word for word 😂when you mentioned the title of : Moisturizer is not the same as conditioner..... Because I use that advice whenever I wash my hair. I remembered what you said, with that: Great advice and knowledge. Thanks so much for being on here and stopping some of the myths that have been said about washing your hair in cold ONLY was the solution to making our hair feel softer. I take your advice and carry it on me in my pocket. 😂 . The recent videos that you have done( which are the last 2 I mentioned) were very professional, very knowledgeable. You know your stuff! I use your advice and share with my friends. But most of all you are so comical with jokes and entertainment , with your facial expressions😂 and everything .Very amusing. So dont stop the informational videos like these last 2. I enjoy it !!and I use it. Also could you go more into what are good moisturizers for natural hair? I know you talked about the differences between oils, butters like for heat protectants before, But can you discuss, when to apply the moisturizers, such as : after washing , is it really beneficial to apply a moisturizer over a leave in conditioner or wait a few days for cuticles to close up on the hair shaft because that's when the hair will need it ( moisturizer)? Cause you don't want to overstress the shaft by laying on top much stuff at the time , it doesn't need it, right? So what are good moisturizers and when are the best times to apply them.. Thanks so much your knowledge... Pray to the gods😂😂😂😂🤣🤣

    In my experience, after I condition, my hair feels softer. It starts to feel "drier" as the hair dries, even after putting in oil and leave in. I then twist my hair. The next day, the hair feels smoother and "moisturized". So, it's like you said: hair "moisture" can feel different depending on how it's style, build up, etc. Because when it's time for wash day, no matter how stretched my hair is with build up, it truly IS dry. I can tell a difference. Thank you for the video, as I did get good info out of it

    You better be moved by the Roots
    Great analogy with the skin and shower.
    I agree with you on the idea behind the No raw oils etc.. challenge and the goal of getting to know your hair first then incorporate product and see how your hair feels, look etc... to better understand your hair "needs".
    A little everywhere but the point was made and you have the video references to help.
    Great share! Have fun at skating!!!
    **This video lead me to wonder, can your hair feel and be conditioned but be dry?

    • @denyshadials5702
      @denyshadials5702 3 роки тому +1

      Imo yes, I see it in the stages of my wash n go. My definition of ‘dry’ is (literally) the water has completely evaporated from your strands and when that happens, I have less movement and my hair stiffens.
      So starting from the point I no longer feel wet/dampness on my strands and the cast has dissipated (usually Day 3), my hair has lots of movement and feels soft (conditioned).
      If I’ve used stylers without heavy emollients, I feel more of my texture as the days go on and my hair gets stiffer and moves less.
      If I used stylers with heavy emollients, then my hair will still get stiffer as days go on, but I can feel that ‘layer’ the emollient left behind, even if I didn’t use a lot of that product.
      That’s my view of ‘dry’ and ‘conditioned’ 🤷🏾‍♀️

    • @JermaineAuNatural
      @JermaineAuNatural 3 роки тому

      @@denyshadials5702 I can see how when it’s dry there is less movement and it stiff. Have you noticed the stiffness and less movement with your wash n go of it has frizzed up? Like day 5-7? Does it sound or feel dry then?

    • @denyshadials5702
      @denyshadials5702 3 роки тому +1

      @@JermaineAuNatural
      Oh absolutely! But I’m also the type of person that, when I see as less movement as I want to see (usually day 4 or 5) I’ll either dampen and put it in bun/head wrap situation or I wash and reset my curls-my scalp itches past that 😅. Btw my strands like to spread, so I hardly start out with lots of definition and my hair frizzes from day 2 onward lol ‘wash n fro’ is probably a truer term for my hair type ☺️

    I understand what you're saying, but what does it mean when you have a consistent routine of lightly oiling your scalp every 3-4 days when wearing braids, twists, or locs and your scalp itches inbetween the time frame? Does that mean we're using the wrong oil or not adding enough? Or that it's time to wash your hair?

      You might have a sensitivity to synthetic hair or you might be overusing oils and you need to cleanse your scalp. Oil doesn't make your scalp not itch.

Right now I'm wearing my natural hair in a 2 strand comb twist for the first time and I'm going through the issues that I described. It's been 2 weeks and it was done by a professional stylist/beautician.

      No.

    • @__Selena__
      @__Selena__ 3 роки тому +3

      I realized for me, dryness contributed to more single strand knots than usual. Curl pattern and texture can contribute to them too as it just comes with the territory of coily/kinky/curly hair. If it’s a “fresh” SSK, I usually can get it out with oil and it slips out. I don’t think it’s possible to completely eliminate them but keeping your ends lubricated or moisturized does help. Trimming when necessary is also effective.
