    The problem is people need to stop blindly following what everybody and their sister on UA-cam is doing. Figure out and do what works for YOU. I've broken so many natural hair "rules" and my hair has never been healthier.

      gigglyfitzgirl I agree! Throughout my natural hair journey (3 years) I've heard people say you should do a protein treatment once a month. I don't! But I do do protein treatments before I dye my hair and I dye my hair 3 times a year (to hide greys)I don't know if that's ok but that's what I do!

    I use protein, but I was lucky because my mom is a licensed cosmetologist. So I know.. I use aphogee 2 minute reconstructor And water only washing? Wtf? And don't let me rant about the cowashing thing.. cowashing doesn't make any sense to me, it's like washing your body with a body lotion.

    I have NEVER used protein and i NEVER will. My ancestors didnt use protein on their hair so why should i???? I've never used a protein treatment or elasticity treatment because I get enough protein in my diet. These "gurus" ain't gurus. They're not trichologists, dermalogoists or most not even cosmetologist so you can't listen to everything they say or follow everything they do. Listen to your hair. As always, AfrikanHairGod, you speak the truth.

    I said the exact same thing about Naptural85 and the WOW method. She was singing it's praises one week and a few weeks later, she's using black soap. All these people who blindly follow these youtubers will not have a successful hair journey. People have to stop being lazy and do their own research. I totally agree about the usage of protein. My regimen is HEAVILY moisture based. I avoid protein like the plague and my hair is thriving, it's always soft, and I retain length. People wanted to burn me at the stake when I said that natural hair doesn't need protein. Great video and thank you for saying what NEEDS to be said in the NHC.

    RANT TIME: I was about to buy the aphogee protein because youtubers recommended it but i couldn't find it anywhere so i didn't buy it. The oil mix, i freaking bought a lot of expensive oils, essential oils to mix and that shit didn't do anything for me. Wtf is cowashing? I heard some youtubers use shampoo once a month. My stupid ass was literally following what "The Natural Hair Community" said. As a result, i spent $130 dollars in a MOTHAFUCKING DAY buying natural hair products without cones and sulfates or other shit. Never again. I want back to the basic and you know what, my hair loves grease which is a no no for the natural hair community, my hair loves sulfates and the cones and my hair felt clean. And why natural hair products are so damn expensive?

    • @mango8714
      @mango8714 7 років тому +5

      MsHelloKittyLover people don't realise that you don't have to spend hella money on silicone/sulfate free products. you can use apple cider vinegar or clay to wash your hair and if you need to shampoo invest in a simple Shea moisture shampoo. I use either their yucca and plantain, curl and shine, or their raw Shea shampoo. you don't even have to use Shea moisture there are many other sulfate and silicone free shampoos out there. Suave Everlasting sunshine conditioner is a silicone free conditioner that works well on natural hair and it costs 1-3 dollars for a huge bottle. You can use sweet almond oil/castor oil and peppermint oil or Doo Gro Mega Growth oil for your scalp. Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner is a good product for most natural hair and it doubles as a deep conditioner and a leave in and it costs 9.99 at GNC so you can mix oils with it or use it as is to deep condition and not even rinse it out then use a cream and or butter over it like Eden body works curl defining cream or Shea Moisture Curl enhancing smoothie I don't even use a cream over it anymore I use the Shea Moisture Curl Gel souffle over it and my hair is moisturized all week and if you need a sealant I recommend avocado oil and Shea butter, Shea nut oil, or Castor oil.

    • @mango8714

      3 years later I’m reading this and am thinking the exact same thing as you! Just about an hour ago another natural hair influencer recommended I use the aphrogee 2 step treatment because it sounds like my hair is weak. I was describing what my hair has been doing in this past year (to me, extra shedding even though my hair stylist says my hair is healthy), and thinning in 2 spots on the very front of my hairline). I’ve been bleaching my hair for about 4 years and never had any issues. I’m going through extra stress so I thought that might be the cause. I’m also taking the curlsmith vitamins, but haven’t noticed any difference. I still don’t know what to do, but now I’m definitely NOT going to be using that aphrogee treatment.

    • @BISI1984
      @BISI1984 7 років тому +31

      I for one don't really like it because from the first time I tried it by itself it made my hair brittle and dry . I can use it mixed with another oil though but you are right, it seems to be a new trend , all this well known UA-camrs saying that their hair hates it now whereas before their hair loved it.

    • @1perle
      @1perle 7 років тому +17

      Shantia Allen Right?!!! I love coconut oil! I only use it as a detangler or mixing with conditioners that will be washed out anyway. I know everyone is different though, but what bothers me is IF one UA-camr stops then it seems like a WHOLE wave of followers stop too. Just based on ONE person's experience! We don't even know all the factors! Is someone really going to toss out their coconut oil after a bad hair day based on someone else's opinion vs facts? That's crazy to me😅

    • @JessicaJEElaine

    • @MADPunkyHeartLESS
      @MADPunkyHeartLESS 7 років тому +7

      I stopped using it a while ago because it makes my scalp burn, thus causing flakes. It dries my hair out, as well. But as for everyone else, it could possibly be a trend, now that you mention it. It's kind of annoying when so many people stop doing something because someone else stops. That's why I could care less about the natural hair community, lol.

  • @rzrbck84
    @rzrbck84 7 років тому +36

    I like the way you're cleaning up all the mess in the natural hair community. Lol. Whenever I come across a new product or some new "treatment", I do extensive research on it before buying or doing it. And 9 times out of 10, I conclude that my hair doesn't need it. Seems like a lotta people don't fully understand *what* exactly a protein treatment does to the hair structurally. Those pure, hard proteins that people put in their hair makes me cringe,lolz. I would neva!

    You are sooooo right. I'm an almost 3 year natural, and I was concerned about having moisture overload because my texture has softened, my curls have become a little more defined, and more manageable than my earlier years. I was obsessive over it because of all the you tube scares and time blood, sweat and tears I've put into having healthy hair. I almost fed into the aphogee protein craze, but instead I pre-pood my hair with castor oil and stoped using a leave in conditioner every wash. My hair is gorgeous and simply more manageable now. Keep serving us truth honey. BLESSINGS❤❤❤❤❤

  • @tresboujay
    @tresboujay 7 років тому +10

    Thank you!!! Most people that think they are protein sensitive are really just suffering from overload because they didn't need it in the first place. Protein is something you need after your hair has been broken down (by heat, chemical damage from color or relaxers etc) and needs to be protected by a coat of protein. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    It's time to realize that less is more when it comes to natural hair. All these expensive products and whatnot many times do more damage than good. Keep a simple regimen and find what works for you and your hair will grow. I used to spend too much money trying to get my hair to look like these youtubers...all the while they getting the products for FREE so their opinion is bought and paid for. Thats why I love this Channel, you keep it 100!!

    I watch a lot of natural hair care videos for entertainment, not for expertise. The fact remains that only I know what works best for my hair or even perhaps a licensed cosmetologist. A lot of people watch all these hair care videos and constantly change up their regimen & become product junkies, not me. I've been growing out my hair for almost 6 years now and I must say my hair is thriving & growing. I've never even used a protein treatment before. I shampoo, deep condition, maybe a little olive oil (my hair doesn't like coconut oil), and low manipulation hairstyles. Maybe twists or braids every now again but it works for me. My hair would be a mess if I tried every method, product, hairstyle, or regimen that I view on UA-cam. Find what works for you and stop bandwagoning because there's not some undiscovered product or method out there that's going to be magical. Do you own research and listen to your hair.

    You are absolutely right!! I've seen girls do reviews on protein treatments that didn't need it and give the product a bad review and I'm like the product isn't bad you just didn't need it... you really need to only use them when needed or it will cause more damage!! Great video!!

    So true. I have only needed protein once in my lifetime, and that was when I decided to go from many years of flat ironing to heatless styling. I did use aphrogee two step, my hair needed it bcz of all the years of heat styling. Yes I could have just big chopped, but that wasn't the right choice for me. I haven't used a hard protein treatment since then, and I most likely will not need to.

    I'm so glad you made this video! Protein did nothing for my hair (4b-4c) & Keratin left my hair so dry, nothing would penetrate the hair shaft! I went back to the way my mother did my hair when I was young (before perms) hot oil treatments and very little products. So done with the fruit salad creams!

    LOL, you tickle me! But seriously, I look at people applying that apogee and getting that helmet head and know that ish would tear my hair up. I made a mistake early on in my journey by using africa's best mayonnaise thinking it would work the same on my natural hair and my hair got dry and hard to the max. You don't have to worry about me trying protein treatments again. What I have that works is what I will continue to use.

    Before I watch this video lemme just say that I do a protein treatment every time I wash my hair (about every 2 weeks). I have *high porosity* hair. My hair needs and loves it. But Imma watch this anyway.
    Let me add that I ALWAYS follow the protein treatment with a deep conditioning treatment. You have to balance it.

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  7 років тому +15

      gigglyfitzgirl you are using what is considered "reconstructing conditioners" that they often advertise as "protein treatments" because they contain proteins. I've never had a problem with using those. In the event that your protein balance starts to shift too much, it will be much easier to notice and fix it before it gets worse. But with you having a balanced routine that seems to work great for you I can't disagree with you. 👍👌

    • @gigglyfitzgirl
      @gigglyfitzgirl 7 років тому +3

      ***** As I got towards the end of your video I started wondering if I was using an actual heavy duty protein treatment like you were talking about. But I think you might be right, I might be using a conditoner with proteins. I don't feel like looking it up now lol but it's called "Hair Hask keratin protein conditioning treatment" or something like that. Might not be as harsh as what you're talking about. But then again I tried an aphogee protein treatment and I felt that it didn't do as good of a job so now I have no idea what to think. But as long as I have something that's working (and affordable) I guess that's all that matters... Thanks for another great video though. Even though I feel like I know my hair I always find myself learning new things from you. 👍Which is why I haven't unsubbed...can't say that abt many other "natural hair experts" on here though. *cough cough*

    • @gigglyfitzgirl
      @gigglyfitzgirl 7 років тому +5

      AfrikanHairGod Ok...so I had to humble myself and come back to this video and tell you that I overdid it with the protein. Over the months I wasn't realizing that my hair was slowly losing its shrinkage and curl pattern and becoming more dry and brittle. I did a deep conditioning treatment (with a heat cap for the first time) and my hair shrunk up and I was like "oh right so this is what my hair used to be like". 😂😂 Then I remembered your strand test video about moisture vs protein overload. So I took a strand of my hair and pulled it and it snapped immediately. No elasticity, nothing. 😭😭😭 I'm getting it back together now and will only do the protein conditioners when/if needed.
      ...WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO BE RIGHT?! 😂😂😭😭
      But seriously, thanks for the help over the years with teaching us these things. It's because of you that I haven't shaved my hair off.

    Excuse me while I look like a stalker viewing all these old videos 😂 but the info be so on point. I was using the Aphogee 2 min reconstructor (not the 2 step protein one) about 1 and a half to 2 years ago and it did feel awesome but as I kept using it I was like hmmm maybe this isn’t necessary I was lucky I was paying attention enough to catch it was starting to feel different before I had an issue. If I feel my hair need “protein” I just use a strengthening conditioner and apparently that is more than enough “for me”. I’m binging on your videos so again please excuse me. 😂

    And according to my mom base on what I understood protein treatments is a building block, it patches up the missing parts of your hair, but as far as I know too, a deep conditioner won't penterate your hair cuticle unless is has a type of hydrolized protein in it.

    We were sold protein as the solution since _before_ the natural hair movement. All of the old products were loaded down with protein and had something about "breakage" on the front. I did have to whip out the hard protein treatment *once* on my natural hair but its been fine ever since--almost a year later.

    I'm so glad you made this video. I have been telling my daughter that we don't need protein treatments and if it is needed it should only be done by a licensed cosmetologist. It can really wreck havoc on natural hair. My hair is bra strap length in 3 years and I have NEVER done a protein treatment. My sister is a licensed cosmetologist (I hate that she lives in a different state from me so she can't do my hair) but she has always told me to never try doing any protein treatments on my own hair. It should be left to the professionals. Hopefully the people that see this video will heed your advice. Thanks for sharing.

    I usually read the comments First time leaving one Luv your channel! Protein treatments are really for people with straight hair which is permed hair Protein treatments can also be used for damaged hair due to heat and dye Do not USE something you already have This leads to protein overload eventually Im going to briefly focus on protein and porosity Many people with low porosity hair are protein sensitive They cant use coconut oil due to the protein It will sit on the hair and make the hair hard and dry I hoped this helped some people

This is my second attempt at going natural by transitioning. The first time was wild with information overload of a lot of misinformation. This time around I've been going with the flow til now recently my relaxed ends are losing and natural thriving. I have yet to cater to both textures and it's starting to show so im cutting back more ends. With that being said, just continuing to find more information through your videos to learn to keep it simple and less stressful

    I agree with you absolutely you are right I am not a licensed hair stylist but I know from experience there is a such thing as too much protein because when a person uses too much protein it dry the hair out and it also breaks it off because it is so dry I used to use a leave-in conditioner which was basically a straight-up protein and I just stopped using it now I rarely use any type of protein treatment just shampoo and conditioner.

    I think there's a huge difference in doing liquid protein like Aphogee and normal protein conditioners once a month. When I first went natural, I heard the message, "DON'T use protein, our hair is protein sensitive!" I stopped using protein, got braids without doing protein and my hair broke off a little. I think it's better to preach balance because some people take things very literally like me. Just my 2 cents. Also it's imperative to do protein conditioners or like you said reconstructive type treatments if you have color treated hair.

    I wish I had seen your videos when I just started my journey. I wasted so much money on products because UA-cam's endorsed them and it took me literally a YEAR to find a deep conditioner that worked. Name it, I tried it.
    I even ordered a shit ton of Shea moisture deep conditioners one black Friday cause every single UA-cam raved about it. I used it twice and it made my hair so hard and crunchy I felt so cheated. Had to give them away and I'm talking about the 1 pound jars.
    It was after some time I spotted a video and realized my hair was sensitive to protein. Looked up protein free deep conditioners and the first one I tried, my hair felt like heaven. It was after that I kinda found my own way with my hair regimen and stopped blindly believing what I saw on UA-cam.
    Love your channel! It's so real and spot on. You tell it as it is. Almost 4 years into my hair journey and my hair is so full and healthy. People assume I use tons of products to get it like this but I always tell them less is more!
