i like that melon race is finally getting some well deserved attention, it's really fun in gmod 9 and it's a shame it's not one of the stock gamemodes in 13
that sounds like a pretty awful idea, cant wait to take the awful competition idea thats ruined modern multiplayer games and apply it to a dead minigame
It will only die out yet again. There were loads of amazing gamemodes that would have constant activity that just gradually lost their playerbase and died out. Gmod itself is already losing players. The game just isn't as popular anymore unfortunately. People still play on there, but not as much as before. You would be hard pressed to find a reasonable amount of players on a unique gamemode (let's not count the big guys such as sandbox, darkrp, starwarsrp, etc.) that isn't in a language other than English, and isn't nearly or fully empty.
Absolutely incredible you were able to talk to Garry about this. I had no idea he was working on a new game either but now I'm hyped. Thanks for the video man, you're definitely one of the best gmod content creators on here, and your work is greatly appreciated.
I really love how often you connected the name and face Garry Newman instead of saying Mr. Valve's name even once haha, he doesn't need the extra recognition.
Only ever played MelonRacer once or twice back when I got Gmod, but holy shit was it a good once or twice. Seriously glad to see people still remember it, thanks for the video and port mate!
Wow, i never knew about that! It has a very similar vibe of Sanic Ball, a joke fangame that plays like a marble race similar to this, just with much bigger and longer races, it's pretty fun!
Does anyone remember that Explosive Barrel gamemode? It was really simple but so much fun, it was 2 teams 1 of barrels and the other were humans armed with modified USP's that had more ammo but fired slower. Exploding a regular barrel usually resulted in HP loss or typically death just like in prop hunt and It worked like infection starting the game with a single sentient barrel, each kill adding a new teammate. I miss it so much...
I love your videos man. Theyre so different from anything ive ever seen before. You cover things that are so interesting and legitimately important for source game history.
When I was younger I didn't had steam, and my father was able to install me a Gmod 9 version of it when I requested his help to get it, I think Gmod 12 was in that moment on steam because there was videos from Gmod tower going on. And melon racer was the only thing I was able to understand xD. Also the outro song be slapping
Awesome video. Melon Race was my introduction to Gmod, my dad installed it on our computer and we would play it all the time! Also the one with the seagull trying to poop on the guy, but Melon Racer was always our favourite.
I have a feeling that Melon Race was removed from GMod much later. I remember seeing it in a 2006 build of GMod 10, and some builds of GMod 11. From what I know, the build of GMod 10 shown here is from 2007, plus the gamemode might have been removed by someone that made a copy of it for some unknown reason. From what I remember, Melon Race in GMod 11 looked a lot like what you see in 6:02, with the weird baby compass thing. Keep in mind that I never played the game back then and was just fooling around with copies of old GMod version floating around the internet, so it's possible that the community might have tampered with it, although the ones I have found are pretty clean and have no mods.
Man, I don’t think I could ever express just how thankful I am to Garry for creating what he did. Incredible part of my life and so many other peoples as well. Melon Race was something I really enjoyed in the days before GMod became paid. I haven't though about that default map for quite some time, but memories came flooding back when I saw it and the rest of the Gmod 9 gamemode page. However, I was hoping with this video you'd be able to find some more of the maps people made for it. I have a very scant memory of one that had a few height levels of track and along the highway at the top there was a fast headcrab zombie, but I probably haven't seen that level for 15 years. I also remember a handful of very futuristic looking melon race maps that were loaded with secrets you could find if you were bored of trying to get the best lap time. Point is, there were definitely more custom maps than was given credit for, but who knows how much of that stuff remains on hard drives around the world today.
It is so cool seeing you and ratlobber cover all these niche source/goldsource things. Really cool to get more insight on all this stuff even all the way in 2023
Gotta say, watching the melon race saga take place in real time over the course of several months, followed by seeing this video pop out? Satisfactory.
I remember years ago when I was running GMod servers I found an old copy of Melon Racer that had been ported from GMod 9 to GMod 12 and then was able to use that to port it to GMod 13 to run on one of my servers. Unfortunately it didn't get much popularity at the time and I stopped running the others (SledBuild, Pirate Ship Wars, Flood). Wish I'd shared the code I had at the time so others could have had servers up too. Happy to hear it has been released on the workshop. Event more happy to hear it will be remade in S&box. :)
I actually first experienced melon race in CSGO i'm pretty sure, with a workshop map back in january 2017, but pretty cool to know its roots are way older than that.
Have you done a video on gmod 9 lua viruses? I remember back in the day making my own lua "virus" that spread like a virus and made the server look infected just like the actual viruses. But if you tried to use any of the common virus concommands it would announce it to the server, freeze you in place, spam your console with audio clips and unbind all your keys. I got to see it spread to a number of servers since I'd play zombie mod a lot and randomly see my chat message announcement pop up. Soon later gmod 10 was released and the whole thing abruptly ended.
I actually had this version of GMOD on a computer for a couple of years. I still have vivid memories of the things i made back then. I remember Melon Race also. It was really fun because the watermelon breaks, so the real trick is learning the track so you could always have soft landing and stuff. Thanks for reminding me about being a teenager and racing melons at 3am with my friends.

This is super similar to the super blocky ball community for roblox in fact, this was a really popular gamemode (except you were in a sphere) in the older days of roblox from like 2007-2014, since in 2006 most people didn't really know what to do with it and 2007 was only just starting to move in that direction. I wonder if the creator of that gamemode (which then got mirrored and mutated into SBB) had connections to the melon race community. The style of the race track is nearly identical to how SBB does it, although you have more controls (A and D move you side to side and allows you to turn harder) and you can't be killed by smashing into something, but if you smash into something it bounces you backwards a lot and that gives a massive precision and speed curve that you talked about. There's an economics term exactly for that kind of trade off, it's the production possibility curve, literally. You follow that accordingly to your own playstyle, it's actually funny how complex such innanely simple mechanics can get on a paper level. I find myself regularly going back to the idea of many games we play sharing a lot of similarities with chess. Chess is a game with very simple rules and mechanics, yet it is one of the most intricate and deep board games that is commonly played with hundreds of years of strategizing and complex mathematical algorithms that can't even solve the game. In that aspect, this form of racing is a similar situation where simple mechanics make for complex competition. Before anyone says, I know that both were obviously inspired by super monkey ball. I mean, super blocky ball literally makes that obvious, but the map designs for SBB and melon racing are more similar to one another than to SMB and the control schemes are entirely different, being adapted for a more (at the time) limited platform. The game completely changes when you remove the tilting mechanic and use a more standard moving mechanic, it's like how CSGO and Valorant play similarly but are totally different games on the paper level because of the more limited utility on Valorant.
