Totally agree and that applies to the majority of the NIN catalog. Really, NIN is one of those bands (I use the term loosely as it's just Trent until the later stuff) like Tool or Pink Floyd that writes albums, not songs. The Fragile, from my point of view, was an extension of The Downward Spiral and just had him expanding and building on that base. Luckily it takes me almost exactly the length of that whole album to mow my lawn so I just pop that on and can listen from start to finish otherwise I might never get the opportunity to experience it as often as I do! 🤣
On a serious note though. He was stating that he has to do these things to escape his depression. And even though after is degrading, but while he is in it he is perfect. So the song is a cycle.
Don't get me wrong but I feel we should take a look into " " 9:35 Pretty Hate Machine" Is "Head like a Hole" Trent dealing with a Narcissistic relationship? Every song on this Album rocks! True breakup music for those of us who were discarded by a Narc...
the quiet lyrics at the end... Through every forest Above the trees Within my stomach Scraped off my knees I drink the honey Inside your hive You are the reason I stay alive
My friend used to say "through the forest, and over the river to grandmother's house we go". and no matter how into the song we were, everyone in our goth/ metal head group would belt out laughing because of it.
NiN is great for this channel’s subject matter. It’s important to understand the context of the album “The Downward Spiral” which this song is in, it tells the story of a man slowly devolving into insanity and eventually doing something irreversible. At this point in the man’s journey he is trying to escape his problems by turning to… what is talked about in this song
I appreciate you pushing past the shock value and digging in to the deeper meaning behind this piece. I've tried many times to play this for someone as I really relate to it but they rarely make it past the 1st chorus. It's a man crying out for help. He only knows one way to make the pain stop and all he wants is a few fleeting moments of peace. But all most people hear is "FUCK YOU LIKE AN ANIMAL" and they're done. Again, Thank you.
Trent is a genius. He has and keeps saving me since 1989. Help me get away from my horrible struggles. Masterpiece. Fun fact he wasn’t going to put this in the record. ❤More NIN please!!!!

You absolutely nailed the theme here. This is about feeding an alter ego and putting your pain into (ew) someone else. The act in this song is closer to an expression of violence than love. The imagery of traditionally disgusting things being sexualised is confronting (the carcass being oddly yonic, the eel being phallic, the bound monkey, the lizards and birth etc). It mocks and even completely misunderstands something "sexy". Then there is the sounds... Heavy synth and bass that resembles a pulse drowning out tragic piano that finally breaks through at the end. In fact this whole album is a beast and helped me through the darkest of my days. The algorithm may not permit but this album from start to finish is amazing and tells the story of a depressed man creating an alter ego, succumbing to addiction and self loathing. Definitely check out the closing track "Hurt" if nothing else
Well this should be interesting never saw this reaction coming,😂 I understand its sort of seemingly taboo song but artistically I kind of like the raw kind of slightly disgusting way this song makes me feel, it's got a great sound
Ohh girl, I love how you got it right away, most of the time people just get shocked by the lyrics. You should listen to the whole album! I'd love to hear your therapist perspective on such a dark and intimate album.
This song /video hit so many NAILS on the head for the forefront when it comes to INDUSTRIAL music, but you hit the nail on the head with most of what you are listening to amd relating. I could go further... but I highly recommend you listening to the entire album of 'Downward Spiral. Especially knowing the last track "Hurt" was eventually covered by Johnny Cash only about 10 years later, or so.
👏👏👏 your analysis of the lyrics are spot on- especially if you take the whole album into account - but it seems that the symbolism of the visuals may have stumped you- will make more sense when you dive into the album as a whole 😊
Very good analysis! You totally get the meaning of the song, wich sadly , many other reactors don't!The song comes from a concept album that describes the complete downfall of soul.I really think an complete album analysis of 'The downward Spiral' would not only perfectly fit into this channel, you also would love the musical artistry and the very well written lyrics of it! It's nothing less than a masterpiece!
I’ve enjoyed these videos and music breakdowns. Feel like some Pearl Jam would be relatable to people as well, rearview mirror, in my tree, and deep are a few tracks that come to mind. Thank you for doing these and I do believe this does help people out there either dealing with or folks that have overcome and help inspire them to help others and spread positivity, through the power of music.
Trent Reznor is a genius. He is the godfather of industrial metal music. He was one of the pioneers of taking electronic sounds and fusing a dose of heavy metal. The result is both catchy and terrifying at the same time. Add to it his lyrics that were generally shocking in some way, to force you to think and analysis oneself.
65 year old white woman. During covid I took the opportunity to try to listen to music I have not heard before they have been popular or talked about over the decades. One of my first discoveries was nine inch nails the immediate reaction was profound. Anyway this song hold me in yet tore at me. I stumbled on your site today no idea where I was going at that point.. but what caught my eye was that someone anyone had done a reaction of some kind of that song. After listening on top of it... It was a non-judgmental therapeutic look at the depression and addiction and all the things that are so covered up... Lights to think about but I wanted to let you know how grateful I am to discovered someone you can analyze something the other glance repelled so many. That right there is the story it needs to be told. So much incredible pain and indescribable horror I think... The underlying current is trying to find a way to say help me.
You want to witness the journey of a man through his music. Go down the Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor rabbit hole. Trent transformed over the past 35 years
whilst slightly late try reacting to Johnny Cash's cover of the Nine Inch Nail's song "Hurt" by Trent Reznor, Trent I believe after hearing Johnny's version basically went "You OWNED THIS SONG, we are not worthy", it was also Johnny Cash's last song before his wife and he passed.
I just loved the analisys. I can relate so much with what you said. Thank you so much for this. And I want to share a thought that I personally had on the lyric of this song. When I've listened the entire "The downward spiral" album paying close attention to the lyrics and knowing that it is a conceptual album, I realized that in the song "Closer" he is talking about a very hard drug, and not about someone to have sex with. Is like he is saying: "I know that having you in my organism is breaking me apart... but oh my god, you're so delicious... I think I need help"
A really good video that depicts someone out of control is 'Wrong" by Depeche Mode. If I remember it was meant to portray their own struggles with addiction. In the video a guy is rolling backwards in his car, out of control, damaging everything that gets in its way. Only to come to at the end to scream for help, but it had become too late.
Another NIN music video that's interesting from a psychological perspective is the music video for Burn which was recorded for the soundtrack of Natural Born Killers.
I wish other nin songs would get requested for these videos. Songs like "right where it belongs" " the great below" "every day is exactly the same" and "something i can never have" would do more to get people interested in Mr. Reznors music than the harder favorites like "closer" or "wish". It can be a bit much for some at first.
3:50 compulsion This was an insane album listening as a 16 year old, went to the tour in 1994. The last album, Pretty Hate Machine is an industrial masterpiece in my book
The song is pretty straightforward and uncomplicated: it's simply about a guy with low self-esteem in a sexual relationship of some sort with someone, and uses it as an escape instead of dealing with his issues, at the expense of others. Also, this is the edited video because the unedited is filled with nudity and drawings of genitalia.
Love the understanding of the song .. props to you for that. As for the vulgarity thing.. some of us grew up in an environment where vulgarity is the norm when it comes to speech or expression. Saying something vulgar is akin to saying the word 'cake' when speaking of desserts. I honestly am amused when someone gets offended by something I say. That's a them problem.. because being offended is a choice
I was seeing a woman that she always sang along with that song she was lovely and kind and she loved me but I don't know why but she did. My first concert was nin at 94 in Chicago.

You let me violate you You let me desecrate you You let me penetrate you You let me complicate you - My favourite four lines of lyrics of all time from my favourite musician of all time, Trent Reznor.
An industrial masterpiece. The Downward Spiral and The Fragile are amazing albums. Almost all of NIN stuff is great. I really like their second album Broken. This came out in 1994 that was a GREAT year for music. 1991-2000 were the best music. Really 92-99 but I say 91 because Pearl Jams first album technically came out in December 1991 and Mother Love Bone was pre 1992.
Even as a therapist it does seem like you give off this genuine emotion of a reaction just like the rest of us can relate to because I find myself doing that all the time sometimes.
As a child of about 8 to 10 years of age, I would have (and still do) very much detailed dreams I could/can recall and at the moment of awakening...I would understand I was awake and would adjust to the fact, I am still in my life and my body and still living the same life.
67 years old Love this album but not suppressing I was a teenager in the 70's and cut my teeth on concept albums Prog rock and heavy metal quite often with complex musical themes powerful complex often touching on dark or controversial subjects the album is aptly named "the Downward spiral" like most concept albums best listened from start to finish to fully understand each track and the album as a whole.

Great analysis of this song! A LOT (if not most) people totally miss the point of it! … another GREAT song from this era (mid 90’s) that touches on this topic of “excess to escape the self” is TOOL’s “Stinkfist” , highly recommend it!!!
Yes this a cool song. Yes Trent Reznor was a tortured soul like me. He was an addict. He got clean in 2002. I got clean 5 years ago. That’s why I always identified with NIN and Trent Reznor specifically. He grew up upper middle class like me and he was older than me but I was a freshman in HS when this album came out. I already had their first 2 albums but this one brought it to another level and The Fragile capped it off.

Whoever is analyzing the data of us for you to keep keeping it engaged to this content is the real winner, thxs dr we need more of these
Thank you for doing this! I love these videos! This is extremely helpful in my own maze of life.
Was brought up on NIN since birth. Love/hate some songs/albums but I will always love "them". Trent is a genius
I've heard this song a million times and never thought about it like you explained. Wow. Thanks! ❤
I remember this song being our ANTHEM when it came out mid 90’s.
When I was single in the 90’s….. this song was money
And now he's doing soundtracks for Disney movies. Love NIN.
Nine inch nails - lights in the sky.
Thanks for the video!
The lights in the sky tour was absolutely epic. I saw it on 2 dates, some of the best shows I've ever seen.
@@Mike4891w yeah, real, fantastic show!
I think I need help"
you need to do the whole album. SOOOO much material for your analysis .It's like a concept album about self destruction .
I love how this song has a STRONG sexy vibe.
Yeah they channeled it so smooth
3:19 - editor is wise. 😂
haha when I saw that note popup I was like "oh, a fellow traveler?" 😁
Lol fr, the broken short film gave me irreversible brain damage
🤣🤣🤣
The broken movie is a masterpiece by a certain Mr Peter Christopherson… of the Band Coil. . . Coil are mind blowing….🤯
Oh man the amount of emotion in the lyrics and imagery in so many of his works. Please do "Something I can never have" for more emotion from NIN
And pick the woodstock 94 version... There's just something about that performance that hits different
The entire album is a masterpiece, I would love to see more from it.
NIN - All The Love In The World
Yes
A really good video that depicts someone out of control is 'Wrong" by Depeche Mode. If I remember it was meant to portray their own struggles with addiction. In the video a guy is rolling backwards in his car, out of control, damaging everything that gets in its way. Only to come to at the end to scream for help, but it had become too late.
Nine Inch Nails has been my favorite band since I was 13. I cannot wait to see your reaction to the imagery in this video.
I was seriously watching your channel yesterday and looking if you had made one on closer. And here we are!
That whole album is a work of art! It's pure genius! Please do more of it!
Broken is NIN's masterpiece
Close tie with "Pretty Hate Machine" but I think Broken has the edge. There were a couple of great remix EPs that spun off Broken too.
Face (mind): utter disgust
Body: vibing and enjoying it
yeah, that's pretty much it
If you like weird industrial music with heavily analyzable lyrics, please do Skinny Puppy. It’s… beautiful
2:18 when you’re drunk and you lay down lol
💀
Trent has been filled with angst and anger for 30 years....thank god
3:50 compulsion
This was an insane album listening as a 16 year old, went to the tour in 1994. The last album, Pretty Hate Machine is an industrial masterpiece in my book
Taylor, you're a genius! Great reaction to this video. You're also a feast for the eyes. May you have a great week!
Watch it again, it is the uncensored version, she just blurred it out.
Yep
You can watch the MTV version, which just has “scene missing” or certain parts cropped out for kids to watch…censored lyrics as well I think.
A ground breaking album and cinematography from floria
Love her work
Wonder what you think of a warm place
This man has always been well ahead of the curve, Legend
The whole album of Pretty Hate Machine and Spiral was EPIC
Love the understanding of the song .. props to you for that. As for the vulgarity thing.. some of us grew up in an environment where vulgarity is the norm when it comes to speech or expression. Saying something vulgar is akin to saying the word 'cake' when speaking of desserts. I honestly am amused when someone gets offended by something I say. That's a them problem.. because being offended is a choice
I love how immediately you got it!
I was seeing a woman that she always sang along with that song she was lovely and kind and she loved me but I don't know why but she did.
My first concert was nin at 94 in Chicago.
Check out Head Like a Hole and Terrible Lie by Nine Inch Nails
Also check out these songs by these bands:

You let me violate you
You let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you
You let me complicate you - My favourite four lines of lyrics of all time from my favourite musician of all time, Trent Reznor.
God damn, I think you nailed it! Not just the song, but addiction in general!
You can never go wrong with more NIN
Even as a therapist it does seem like you give off this genuine emotion of a reaction just like the rest of us can relate to because I find myself doing that all the time sometimes.
As a child of about 8 to 10 years of age, I would have (and still do) very much detailed dreams I could/can recall and at the moment of awakening...I would understand I was awake and would adjust to the fact, I am still in my life and my body and still living the same life.
I remember when this video first started playing on mtv. Good times, man. Good times 😂💜
Wow. Amazing analysis. Help me is the most repeated line..New perspective on this song now. Thank you
I would really love for her to make a video reacting to the video of Corey Taylor doing a therapy session with Siri Sat Nam Singh
That would be interesting. I saw that video, and it was incredible
Wow, this is the most insightful reaction i've seen about this song. This song is in an album called 'Downward Spiral' about just what you're describing.
Everyone need a bad ass therapist like you .
First time hearing this song was a wild ride of emotion for me.
Great analysis of this song! A LOT (if not most) people totally miss the point of it! … another GREAT song from this era (mid 90’s) that touches on this topic of “excess to escape the self” is TOOL’s “Stinkfist” , highly recommend it!!!
NIN is amazing! I wish Trent and Co would put another album out and tour again!
How has this channel not listened to Johnny Cash's "Hurt" yet? Perfect song to explore! Def recommend next!
