  • In this video I talk through my method for formulating soap recipes. I go through all the details of the process (including how to decide on water amounts for your recipes) and then demonstrate how to calculate a soap recipe using the Soap Calc online soap calculator.
    New to soap making? This is important!
    Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Hey Elly, You are such a fount of soap wisdom and I am so grateful I stumbled upon your site. I've never made anything close to a soap, but now I'm interested in trying my hand at shampoo bars. While this video explains calculations, it doesnt explain the actual recipe. I mean, why did you choose those oils and in those ratios? Will their combination achieve a specific, desired result? For a shampoo bar for oily hair, naturally the aim is to remove the oils but also to cleanse, without drying. Bearing that in mind, how do I create a recipe? I wanted to experiment with ghee in a shampoo bar as Ive heard it leaves hair silky and shiny. How do I decide the quantity of ghee and how do I decide the quantity of other oils and which oils to combine it with?

    💖 What a fabulous teacher! I have been reading for several hours trying to wrap my head around the amount of oils vs sodium hydroxide/water. I have NEVER made soap. I am researching before I even purchase the items needed. I was about to give up. I clicked on this video mainly because it was in front of me, really thinking I would shut it off before it was over 🤪. This was what I needed! Thank you! You have a kind and generous spirit. Teaching others how to do this on their own is such a kind way of HELPING others. I have a very specific reason for needing to make my own soap. I have been ordering home made soap online and I can not afford to put that much money out on bath soap any longer. I am so exhausted from researching and so THRILLED to have this video. I plan to watch all other videos that you have to share! You are so few very much appreciated.

      I had my distilled water and lye since April and just got my molds from Amazon last week.
      Seeing this video gives me the motivation and insight into understanding what to to.
      I did a soap making course since 2019 and was to go onto advanced but then the pandemic hit and the class never started back so I lost the interest but now I'm at it again.
      Forever grateful 💖🙏🏾

    Hi Elly Made my first bar of soap yesterday and cut it today. I want to thank you for all your help. I am stoked. I used light coloured olive oil 80% and 20% coconut oil. Turned out very close to white in colour. Just what I wanted. Sliced it up today. Now to have the strength to wait the 4 to 6 weeks or longer to use it. I want to go out and make more. LOL. I figured out the hardness factor too. Your recipe was at 25%. So I will shoot for that kind of a range. Knowing that mine is a nice firm bar today it will be close to what I want in about 6 weeks. Given the heat we are experiencing at the moment it could be closer to 4 weeks. But all a learning curve. Thanks for inspiring me and being close to the place I live in. That was important to me. To know what works in our climate. You made it look a lot less intimidating. Cheers Kindness regards. Glenda

    Hello from Brazil, Elly! Thank you so much for teaching me how to use this soap calculator. I saw the calculator so many times, but had no idea on how to use it. I want to start making soaps for my self to learn first and then to make it for selling to have an extra income but I could never understand how to calculate the lye concentration. Here people don't teach us that. They only teach us to use melt and pour method that we need to buy for the base which is very expensive and we have no idea of the precedence of the oils/ingredient used. I will be grateful for the rest of my life. Thank you so much. 🥰

      @Susan W you really need to watch many soap making videos, like UA-cam channel @soaping101, @BrambleBerrySoaps (I think), etc. However, I'll reply to your thought about using corn oil for soap. It's not recommended because corn oil makes a soap that tends to develop rancid spots called DOS: dreaded orange spots.
      If you want to use cheap cooking oils please use a soap calculator to create your own recipe.

    INS is a combination of the iodine and saponification numbers and gauges the hardness of the soap. The Calculator recommends a range of 136-165 for INS for the hardness of soaps but you can work outside the range with experience. For example, your soap recipe has an INS number of 122 indicating that it will be on the softer side.

As in, we have to ''cut'' those grams from, for example, the olive oil, and use the ''space'' to fill it with the 30 to 50 grs of essential oils?

    Hi Elly, Another great video. It made it very clear how to use the calculator, but one thing I am still struggling to understand is the LYE concentration, I know for this recipe you chose 40% but if I want to change the recipe, what would determine the % of lye concentration for that? Thank you in advance :)

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  5 років тому +6

      Hi there, well you can choose any lye concentration you like for any recipe, and the calculator will tell you how much lye and water you need. The lye concentration only refers to the ratio of lye to water in the lye solution. It has no bearing on the amount of lye needed for the particular soap recipe, it only determines the lye to water ratio. If you change the lye concentration it will change the water amount, not the lye amount. The lye amounts will change between different recipes, but only if you change the oils. Sorry I think I've explained it better in a comment further down, if you want to read through. I hope that helps!

    Lovely video thank you so much!!! I was left with a question however. You showed the bars and told us how many bars this recipe would make, but you didn't explain how you originally picked 1000 grams of oil.??? I assume it's based on your mold. How do we figure out our oil weight based on our mold??? I've yet to make my first loaf of soap because I can't figure out how much oil to use. I've just stuck to a recipe shared by a friend, and fill as many cavities as I can from that amount. I don't want to make a bunch of slow increased batches until I figure out the volume needed to fill the loaf mold. That would be very expensive and bury us in unsaleable off sized soap bars. So knowing how to calculate the total oil needed for a specific mold volume would great.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  5 років тому +9

      That's a good question, and one I'm frequently asked - good idea for a future video I think! I just work out my mould volume (multiply length x width x height in centimeters and that will give you total gram amount), then I make my oil batch size half the volume of the total mould capacity. That gives enough room for the lye, colours etc, and leaves some space at the top. You can also make it more accurate by working out a recipe based on this formula, then adding up all the ingredients and seeing how that compares to the total mould volume. If you want it fuller, just increase the batch size again until you get the right amount. I always work it out completely on paper before I make the soap - you can get exactly what you want the first time that way.

      Have you found the answer to your question yet concerning the amount of oil you use?
      Desired Height of bar = DH
      L x W x DH x .40 = Oil Amount.
      I like to use .42 myself. I think that works better

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  5 років тому +8

      Ok, so if you have your percentages and your total oil amount, then to get the grams for each percentage amount you just multiply the total gram amount by the percentage amount. Here's the working in a few examples:
      50% of 1000g would be 1000 x 0.50 = 500g
      8% of 750g would be 750 x .08 = 60g
      75% of 1250g would be 1250 x .75 = 937.5g
