I'm 54, a former track & field, (hurdler) athlete and I am so impressed with your ability to focus, (in a short vid) on testosterone, it's low production over 40, "girlie-diets" with low-carbs, compound exercises, short rest-periods, strength-training frequency, muscle-recovery and steroids.
    Well done bro.

I'm going to be 41 this year, weighed 265 pounds, and am down now to about 245 by watching calories (eating the same stuff just less and adding more fruits and vegetables), riding a stationary bike, and walking my neighborhood. I know I'll hit a tough spot about 230 because I've done this before and that was hard to break through. I'm out of time though. I'm over 40 now, and have NEVER been fit. Never. I was fat as a kid, and stayed overweight my entire life. I want to see what life is like for a fit person just once before I die.
I feel a lot better already, but I wish I had a guy like this I could get in shape with. It's tough doing this without help, and I just hate that I don't have anywhere to put weights so I'm struggling to figure out how to get some weight training into my routine. Gyms are closed now, and even if they weren't, I have 2 kids (one's an infant) and a full time job. The cost of a gym and the fact I'd have to cram going to one into my schedule makes it hard. It's not that I couldn't do it, I just know there are some practical challenges I'd have to overcome that would make it a mind game to stay dedicated. Thanks for letting me vent. Doubt anyone will read this, but what the hell, I'm doing this mostly on my own with no clue what I'm doing and had to tell someone.

Brother, I've been making all of the mistakes that you've mentioned for years. I've always been pretty fit, especially for my age (I'm an old dude), but my last couple years have been plagued with injuries and little results. Somehow, I managed to figure this out by myself, and started doing 3X workouts - full-body - per week. The worst decision I ever made was the 100 pushups per day for 30 days. I saw benefits, but - man-alive, did I pay for those benefits. Continuous cramped muscles, unprecedented fatigue, liquid shits... the whole nine yards. Since dropping the "always cardio" routine, and switching to a 3X schedule of full-body workouts, my core is stronger, my muscles are responding incredibly, and my energy levels have returned. I've worn a 44 Regular sport jacket since my boxing days - almost 30 years ago. I bought a 46 Regular jacket last week that fits perfectly. My chest, shoulders and arms are bigger than they have ever been. And, even though I've only lost about 7lbs, my pants fit better because my waist is tighter. Belly fat is almost gone. I spent 2 years eating spinach and salmon. I ran almost 3 miles per day, 6x per week, with very little results, except for constant knee pain. Now, I eat pretty much what I want, only in smaller portions, and avoiding useless calories like soda or french fries. I substitute wheat tortillas for bread about 60% of the time. I drink black coffee - which I always drank before my lovely wife poisoned me with the idea of adding creamers. I steam my veggies, and cook everything on stove-top with virgin olive oil. Plus, I add powdered Turmeric to EVERYTHING I eat - without exception. I use it like people use salt. I'll be 60 soon, and can outwork, outlift, and outlast most kids in their 20's.

Hi Junito - Sure, I can share. What I generally do is jog/fast-walk on the treadmill 2-3 times per week, about 2 miles each time. Then I do the upright speed bag (you can get one with weighted base for under $100) for about 20 minutes, circling the bag, and alternating hands. You don't need to try and murder the bag, just get a good rhythm with your hands and feet. I then spend about 5-10 minutes on a heavy bag. I do sometimes try to murder the bag, but that's just old habits. LOL Then, I do my 100 pushups - 4 sets of 25 - and tap the speed bag in between, keeping my steps going. I only do this 3x per week, max... between lifting days. That's it, really. My road running days are pretty much over, because it's just not worth the knee pain and downtime that results. I hate using a treadmill, but it's easy to slow down if the knees start hurting, and it does the trick. And, if my knee pain gets too bad, I'm not a mile-and-a-half from home (this happened to me). Basically, I just get my heart-rate up, and keep it up for a good 45 minutes.

  • @biohack6800

One of the very few people on the internet who actually knows what he is talking about! Kudos! I've spent years trying to figure this out through trial and error and can confirm that all these points are spot on. No crazy cardio, no restrictive diets, no 7 days a week exhausting training. All you have to do is strength training (30-40 minutes, foundational exercises) once every 4-5 days to give your body enough time for full recovery (micro injuries tend to accumulate very fast if you don't rest your joints and tendons), and a balanced diet. Your metabolism will go up, you will lose fat while gaining muscle and strength. Not a rocket science, and yet we seem to always chase after some voodoo systems that don't work and can even cause serious issues down the road!
Once again, great video, Man! I've been following the same principles for a while now. Never had more energy in my entire life. Never been stronger. My students, friends and co-workers keep asking for a magic pill and think I'm secretly using some black sorcery, lol. Sometimes it's so hard to accept the simple truth...
    Cheers!

Besides calling low carb, keto, or paleo feminized diets.
      Otherwise it is good advice.
I just eat good quality real food from farmers markets.
Mostly animal based with some veggies, and daily bone broth that is home made.
Never felt better, Iron is back where it should be, old dodgy joints are better than they have been for decades, and my inflammation has plummeted since dropping many carbs in my diet.

I do 16/8 intermittent fasting. Eat then 3 hours later in the gym then home eat again and fast 16 hours. Stronger and younger looking than 10 years ago. Glad your less cardio works for you.

Great video. I have 100% changed my attitude to exercise since hitting 40. Instead of working out hard, I train smart now. Rather than working out to failure, I do shorter workouts, concentrate more on compound exercises and rarely red line it. Adopting this approach has allowed me to keep training consistently and avoid burnout.

So glad I found this video. added some comfort in what i am doing and trying to achieve. I just turned 52, absolutely hated running in high school. Started a couple years ago walking 5Ks and eventually doing interval 5Ks. I am now regularly running 5ks and reached my PR of 6.37 Miles. A friend who is a year older is crushing 5Ks, albeit I dont expect to catch him his advice to me was work on core. My initial times were in the low to mid 30s. My PR event race was 26.42. So I have found some videos to workout to cross fit types. My routine is Monday 28 minute spin bike, Tuesday Core cross fit workout, Wednesday Interval Ladder training run, Thursday repeat Spin Bike, Friday Core cross fit, Saturday outside run trying to hold at 5 miles or above., and Sunday total rest. My golas this year are 25 minute 5K, get in a 10 mile complete run, and get to 200lbs (now at 209).
I guess my biggest question is for me is this too much. My diet is close to spot on as to what you had written on the white board. Thanks for any feed back and I have already hit the subscribe button.

Im 41. I got rid of the belly fat and now I have abs again. Haven't seen them in over 20 years. They been hiding. I'm not completely inactive, my job requires a certain amount of movement each day. The only change I made, was I completely cut out refined sugar. No cake no cookies I drink my coffee black I think you get the idea. I eat a ton of fruit's, veggies, meat, potatoes honey etc I get plenty of sugar. It is the refined stuff that does us in. It was insane how quickly that stubborn belly fat melted away. I have been studying health for a little over 5 year's. I would eat super healthy for a month here a month there cheat day's etc nothing consistent, however never saw any real results. I noticed positive change's (memory, focus motivation and feeling better in general) but no physical sign's. It is amazing how many symptom's we live with and ignore, our bodies speak to us we just need to learn to listen better. One day I came home and saw a beautiful red velvet cake sitting on the counter. I cracked open the lid got out a knife and was about to commit one of the deadly sins, when I had an epiphany(divine intervention perhaps) and was presented with a choice, demo that lovely, beautiful, intoxicating mistress of darkness or cut out the refined sugar. Now at that time I had known about sugar and insulin production, grain's (specifically grass seed's) and the absolutely devastating effect they have on the human body. So it is not like this intervention was out of left field. Why at that moment couldn't say for sure. So I chose correctly. Within 1 week I had noticed my stomach slimming out. Within a month my good old friend ab's had returned. I lost 15 lbs, and that was the only change to my daily routine that I made. With the progress I made in such a short time with little to no effort(except of course cutting out sugar is really no easy feat) I started to implement other changes(that I knew were essential by the way) drinking lot's of clean water, getting lot's of consistent sleep, exercise, diet (or eating habit's may be a more accurate term) reducing the intake of toxin's and eliminating as many existing toxins as possible and the results are, well extraordinary. Let me be clear there is so much information and misinformation out there that you could go crazy trying to take it all in. So I will break it all down. I do not count calories, weigh out my portion's, try and eat every single "healthy food" on the market with every meal, take a bunch of crazy supplement's(some will be necessary simply because modern agro has kinda destroyed the soil in which our food grows or your food is picked way early and allowed to ripen on the voyage, or...or...or...) or exercise insanely every day. Our bodies are machines of necessity, if you need to be strong you will be strong, if you need to be fast you will be fast, if you need to run for hour's on end you will run for hour's on end. So do everything I have mentioned, eat as clean as possible, drink as clean as possible, sleep as much as you need, exercise just as THE FUNK has prescribed and by necessity your body will become what you want it to. There is of course a bit more to this and no rule is 100% but this is a great start. You will need to do some research. It took me over 5 year's to realize it doesn't need to take 5 year's. Want lot's of big muscles lift heavy, want strength and tone workout intensely, want to run forever cardio is your best friend. The hardest part, is getting started, take action now and your transformation will not take years, you will notice changes within weeks, within a month you will be well on your way and in a couple months you will be in the best shape of your life. Your body is an amazingly efficient machine. Reversing a lifetime of damage could take more or less time, each of us are very different and where we are starting from varies greatly. What ever you do get started and don't believe the hype, if it was advertised how easy this can be(with will power hard work and determination of course) gym's would go out of business. Kind of a contradiction but I hope you get my meaning. Ok I will clarify. Eating healthy is difficult as hell requires knowledge, will power and a bit of effort in preparing your food. But you gotta eat and doing it clean and healthy becomes second nature after a time. Exercising on purpose takes will power, but 30 minutes 3 times a week is time you can afford. Changing a life time of bad habit's doesn't happen over night, it takes real effort. So when I say easy I think I mean compared to what we envision getting healthy and lean will require. Start now, every incremental change we make alter's our trajectory. I used to compete in Olympic weightlifting, but prior and post to that I only ever did whole body workouts with compound exercises. the best routine I found was peary rader's 'deep knee bend system', 3 sets of 20 reps 'breathing squats'(two to three deep breaths between reps) supersetted with cross bench pullovers. 3 sets of 8-12 bench press, 3 sets chin-ups or pulldowns, 3 sets clean and press, 3 sets barbell curl, 3 sets hanging leg raises or crunches(alternate each workout). I used to throw in a few sets of dips but your triceps get plenty from the pressing movements. a very old school basic workout but it worked, especially for those of us that never used steroids. I find that the various split workouts just aren't conducive for natural lifters. anyway, great vid, great advice.

I eat fish, chicken, veggies, fruit, and do short work-outs about 2-3 times per week. I can already see the difference and feel so much more energy. I am stationary at work, but have a desk that raises and lowers. I can stretch when I stand and it helps the blood flow. My goal at 47 is to get down to about 180 and just wake up the muscles, build some strength, and to live healthier. My skin has changed its tone and I have had no indigestion since I changed my diet. I listen to my body and it is working. This is a very good video.

I used to do bro splits in my 20s and 30s and never had gains like this. Also, I spent last summer cycling over 2,000 miles and completely lost fat and muscle. It was horrible. My T must have dropped off the charts from my 3+ hour rides.. Great cardio shape, but the muscle loss was just sick. Now working out smarter and your tips reassure me that I'm on the right track. Low to moderate intensity steady state cardio (HR in the 120-130 range NOT HIGHER) is actually a recovery zone and is great for assisting in aerobic metabolism boosting and also helps your body heal after more intense workouts. My point is that steady state cardio is not evil and when done right has a proper place in any sensible workout routine. Particularly for those of us over 40.

Thank you for focusing on this little-known fact in sports science. I'm not an expert in exercise but I have done lots of different types of exercise over the years, and one thing that really caught my attention is how once I hit 35 my reflexes, stamina and mostly proneness to injury changed quite dramatically.
I took up boxing when I was about 32 and know I am 44.
The difference in what I will call physiological health started to decline alarmingly once I hit 40. It was as if my body knew it was 40 and suddenly I wake up in the morning and all that hard training, physical work, seemed to catch up with me and my joints and muscles ached until I warmed up.
I have always been a reasonably thin man until I hit the Creatine in my late 20's and started bodybuilding hardcore. Now I have the small man boobs, beer belly bits overhanging everywhere - and my diet is actually not bad. I try to walk regularly plus I don't eat ANYTHING high in fat, sugar, I stay away from fast food, soft drink, chips, chocolate etc, but I think because of the medication I'm on it's affecting my metabolism on top of the information presented here.
I am really down about my body image, feel ashamed and unattractive, have bouts of depression and listlessness.
I am someone who has really gone from one extreme to another with weight, and it's hard when you're getting positive feedback, compliments when you're in shape, then slowly slack off because it becomes monotonous, routine, boring then the weight comes back like a flash and then you can notice the subtle disapproval from the people around you.
I really think a 1/3rd of the problem is the food industry, 1/3rd the obsessive almost religious fervor generated by the 'self-improvement' industry and the last 1/3rd is the way I and others attach social value to people according to their body shape.
It's great to feel fit and look good in clothes, but damn its hard work keeping it off. In reality, the investment vs the return just doesn't seem worth it. You work your butt off for 3-6 months before you even start to see results ( that's why boxers go into camp for at least 8-12 weeks, training up to 6 hours a day on a starvation diet ), then if you take a break within a month you're back to where you started. C'mon it's disheartening, tiring and feels like chasing a mirage and the worst part is everyone is hypnotised by obtaining their optimal body. Meh. I hope some guys out there can just understand what I'm saying without trying to push an agenda because I'm tired of everyone the expert.
Yes I'm lazy, but happiness surely does not come with a size 32 waist.

Lots of strong comments on keto here. As an ex-professional sportsman / coach who is now cross training for masters (M60) sprint athletics, I've found that the targeted keto diet (TKD) suits me best, allowing me to add carbs to suit my training schedule.
Whilst I'm involved in multiple training activities, in the gym, only HIIT weights gets close to the results I get from just half an hour (including warm up, dynamic stretching, + cool down) of sprint drills at the track.
One other small point, the general medical advice protein RDA for over 40s needs to be at least doubled.

Seems I’m doing the right things for the most part. I got seriously back into weight training 3 years ago at 45. (I was always really muscular and toned in my 20s and early 30s). My muscle tone was all but gone, my posture was bad, my belly was protruding and I had even started to develop man-boobs. Three years of cutting as much sugar, saturated fat and processed foods from my diet, combined with regular heavy weight training with only limited cardio and I’m now back to my prime. My body fat is around 10%, my stomach flat, my posture good and I’m very muscular again. It’s been tough but so rewarding. I did it for the most part as an experiment to see what was possible - age it seems really is just a number. This video tallies mostly with my approach (avoiding fad diets and too much cardio) but I still use the same “bro-split” routines I did 20 years ago. They still work for me it seems... My workouts are far more intensive and targeted than they were in my youth so perhaps that’s why. It’s definitely a slower process to build muscle than it once was but it can be done if you just refuse to quit.

I guess I remember how easy it was in my 20s, 30s, & 40s but these 50s lol, daddy gotta work a lil bit. Keep up the good work!

Agree totally with your comments. I am 65 and are seeing results with whole body workouts and HIIT. I have noticed that you have to eat to build muscles ie low calorie intake limits muscle growth. I also agree with balancing the 4 macros, but don’t go overboard with the carbs. Complex carbs are best as they will reduce glucose spikes.

I'm from Palmerston North City New Zealand thanks for this presentation.
I'm 44 and used to do bro splits now I only do 3 chest workouts followed by 3x 3 minute rounds of boxing bag fitness with a 1 minute rest between each round.
I do this 2-3 days per week.
Sometimes I'll do 3x 50 metres of swimming 1-3x per week as well.
On my days I don't do chest workouts I do boxing and or swimming fitness.

DeeGee Barxx Fasting and compound circuit training is the best way to lose weight and to feel good. Because that is what we are after in the end.

Gee Whizz I am pretty skinny as well but fasting puts you in a great mental state. I typically skip breakfast and lunch and start eating at around 6PM. I do that for about a week. But when I eat normal I eat low carb, and only try to eat the good fats: nuts, avocados, good fish and no meat. When you break your fast you should eat your greens. But in the end it is what you need to feel good. That is our end-goal. We do not care what anybody else thinks about you or your body. It is about you, you need to be selfish and you need to feel good.

    • @umbroraban1075
      @umbroraban1075 6 років тому +2

Gee Whizz Greens give you the Micronutrients your body needs. Take it easy on the Fruit Juices. They give you an insuline spike and it is not very beneficial, at least not for me. They have a lot of fructose as well and that can give you a fatty liver. But in your case there is not much danger if you are a ripped person. Brussels Sprouts are great with some nuts.

Some helpful information in your presentation but don’t agree with your assessment on long cardio, bro splits, and flat out getting after it. I am 49 and jog 25-30 miles a week while doing high intensity weight training.. My nutrition is tight with plenty of protein, carbs, and 20-25% of fat per day. I drink plenty of water, supplements, and vitamins on a daily basis. Also make sure to sleep 6-8 hours a night. My strength is excellent, and I lift heavy with no problem which releases testosterone. I feel just a strong as when I was in younger. Society wants you to believe once you hit your 40’s, it’s all over for you which is a bunch of crap. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind which can accomplish the unthinkable. Stop putting limitations on yourself of what people say or try to put on you. I am running my first half marathon in March and will be doing 4 Spartan races this year. I incorporate hill training in my cardio workouts and hit the weights after a 10 min break. Stop making excuses, believing your limitations , and get after it. You can do this.

Move a little more. Eat a little less. That is the only thing that works consistently. But sure, any diet, followed religiously and accompanied with exercise will work. The reason they work....you eat a little less and move a little more.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and experience with us! I've been on the low carb/healthy fat diet for a couple of years now, and I've gone from 218 lbs to 162. That all happened within the first 4 months. So, whilst I agree with most of what you say, I'd have to concur with another comment, regarding diet; mileage may vary!
Hey, we're not talking 10gr of carb and the rest in coconut oil. I don't calorie count, or weigh portions of protein, I just don't eat bread, pasta, rice or potatoes or sugar. And no processed foods!
After about six months of 3x a week gym sessions - I gave up on the mega-cardio that I'd been doing for over a decade - I've managed to put on roughly 2kg of lean body mass with a body fat percentage of around 12.
    Btw, I just turned 56.

Its funny, just before coming across this video, I had sat down with pen and paper in hand and reconfigured my workout. I am two months away from being 53 Years old and I was still doing the "bro-split " workouts as he put it. Wish I would have come across this video sooner. Would have saved me months of perplexity. What he talked about pretty much fit me to a T. I don't know if I can cut the cardio as much as he suggests. It's something I truly love and its like a form of meditation for me. Well, at least I am on the right track now knowledge-wise.
