    I understand the etymology. The point is, he changed it's pronunciation, and to avoid any confusion, he even changed it's spelling. Apparently, that wasn't enough. So no, pronouncing it Ricken-bach-er is not correct. I have German relatives with the surname "Hinck". It was anglicized from "Heinken", but pronouncing Hinck as Heinken 100 years later doesn't make that also correct. I think John Hall knows.

    Actually,German immigrant Adolf Rickenbacher changed his surnames' spelling to avoid sounding German at a time in history when being German in America was seen as questionable.So in actual fact,either way one says it is okay.Still,the first name Adolf wasn't changed and that deffinitely sounds Deutsch!

    all arguments aside it doesn't change the fact that Rickenbacker and Rossmeisl were Germans. Rickenbacker was from Switzerland and Rossmeisl from Northern Germany. Both of them absolutely would have pronounced it like this guy does. Regardless of changing the spelling to Americanize the name for the American market, a German is not going to ignore their own dialect and pronounce their own name differently. It would be very unnatural for a German to pronounce the letter a like an American. John Hall and his father may say "back-er", but if Rossmeisl and Rickenbacker were alive they would both pronounce it as "bach-er". If you disagree go find a German and have them pronounce it for you or just ask them how a man from Switzerland named Rickenbacker would pronounce his own name. Even after changing the spelling from Rickenbacher to Rickenbacker, the letter A would not change it's pronunciation. It would still sound like "Bach". So this guy and anyone else is correct. I will say though I would liken it to "tomayto/tomahto". So you can say it either way and be correct.

    • @dansmusic5749
      @dansmusic5749 5 років тому +1

      Correct. Eddie Rickenbacker a celebrity at the time (Ace of Aces, WWI), Americanized his name to BACK er. Adolph, his cousin, wanted to market his guitars using this famous name. So, originally, RickenBOCKer, then RickenBACKer.
      The electric guitar was a novelty at the time which no one was familiar with. The company was looking to legitimize the invention. Eddie's fame was world wide and highly respected. And he loved this country. So Eddie then subsequently Adolf "Americanized" the name. At least, this is what I got from histories I have read on the company.

    • @THEQueeferSutherland
      @THEQueeferSutherland 4 роки тому +1

      Actually, though I think most Germans (or people in general) tend to say "bach/bock", it was actually Adolph Rickenbacker himself that chose the "BACK-er" pronunciation. He also Americanized the spelling as his name was actually Adolph Rickenbacher - I'm sure it was all a way to distance himself from being "too German" sounding in 1918 when he moved to LA. So it's not just John Hall being a dick and choosing to say it wrong, it was Adolph himself that preferred that pronunciation.

    • @stephenhawkingsfootballboo7885
      @stephenhawkingsfootballboo7885 4 роки тому +2

      Guess what. Rickenbacker guitars isn't a Swiss or German company. As has been stated before, the company pronounces it BACK-er, not BOCK-er. It's their product, which gives them the right to pronounce it the way they prefer.
      You can argue etymology and semantics all you want, but at the end of the day, Rickenbacker guitars are RickenBACKers.

      Somewhat. The bodies and necks are CNC made, but they still get a lot of handwork done. Binding, inlays, glueing, dot markers, finishing, and a LOT of final finishing is done by hand. They spend a stupid amount of time buffing the finish. Something like 2 hours per instrument.

    • @DriftSpaceZero
      @DriftSpaceZero 10 років тому +7

      armstrongener
      Actually, it's pronounced like "back," as in "Back to the Future," RickenBACKer; like people who pledge money on KickStarter are "backers." Watch any official RIC factory videos and you'll hear them pronounce it correctly.
      It actually used to be (pronounced & spelled) "RickenBACHer," but Adolph Rickenbacher changed the spelling and pronunciation of his name to the current form of "Rickenbacker" after emigrating to America; it was probably to disassociate himself from the rise of the 3rd Reich, and thus be more successful in America.

    • @teerexness
      @teerexness 10 років тому +4

      armstrongener No, it is pronounces Ricken-BACK-er. Do a search of Rickenbacker President John Hall doing interviews. It's Ricken-BACK-er. Co-founder Adoph Rickenbach-er intentionally anglicized his name to Rickenbacker during The Great War to avoid negative connotations with the German spelling AND pronunciation in the U.S.. In spite of all that, people apparently brain damaged by popcorn advertisements still screw it up on a regular basis. So the answer is, it can't be pronounced either way per the founder's wishes and the current President's pronunciation and it's correctly pronounced Ricken-back-er. Thanks for your time.

      Jimmy J. Rustle the company was started in the 30's by German immigrant Adolph Rickenbacher. The spelling of the company name was changed during the onset of WWII to Americanize the spelling, as immigrants did with family names after checking in through Ellis Island. The pronunciation would remain the same, however. I'm not sure what the person above is on about. Their German must not be very good...

    • @doguecreek
      @doguecreek 7 років тому +2

      Regardless of how you might pronounce the word "Rickenbacker", the name of the guitar is pronounced -BACKer like linebacker. Adolph Rickenbacker (nee Rickenbacher) Anglicized his name himself.
      I own a '66 330 and for years pronounced it German-style until the RIC online forums were created and I got the correct pronunciation from John Hall, the owner of the company.
      BTW, the Swedish store IKEA is pronounced Ee-Kay-Uh by many in Europe, but it's Eye-Key-Uh in America, and even the company markets itself in the USA with this pronunciation. Similar to Nikon cameras, which would be Nee-kon, not Nigh-kon, in Japanese.

    • @GoemonLovesFujiko
      @GoemonLovesFujiko 7 років тому +1

      I live in Japan and I hear this all the time.. Gretsch is "Gure-chi", Fender is "Fendah", Gibson is "Gibu-sohn", and of course Rickenbacker here is pronounced "Riken-bah-kah"... As for the Company itself especially as far as us english speakers go, it is and always will be "Ricken-Back-er" ;)

    I don't agree, I don't think its commendable that Rickenbacker only make guitars in the US. I think its a plain stupid business model, you only need to look at Fender with Squire and Gibson with Epiphone. They sell millions of cheaper copy models that are made in SE Asia that are excellent quality. If Rickenbacker did this that they would make a lot more money and give customers who couldn't otherwise afford it the opportunity to buy one of their guitars.

    • @mattgrimmer9909
      @mattgrimmer9909 7 років тому +2

      Couldn't disagree with you more from a builders standpoint. Their business model is just fine. Small company, everyone paid decently, small product line. I've worked for a number of production guitar companies, and I can tell you that Growth market strategy is not always the best one. Works for some, I think various brands need to find their Niche, an import version of a Rickenbacker doesn't make sense as it would water down their market niche value. A rick sounds like a rick, nothing else sounds/plays like a rick, an import version built to their specs would sound and play like a Rick for less than a US one. Consequently demand for the US version would dip, and their already small market share would get even smaller.

    • @Edward1312
      @Edward1312 7 років тому

      Yes but don't you see that's exactly what punters using Alibaba and Aliexpress are doing, they are ordering guitars made in China with the cheaper parts and labour importing them upgrading them with the better Rickenbacker parts and all for a fraction of the price a new Rickenbacker would cost. My Chickenbacker 12 string cost less than a Rickenbacker tail piece!! An excellent example of how outrageously over priced Rickenbackers are.

    • @mattgrimmer9909
      @mattgrimmer9909 7 років тому +1

      Tony I guess we just disagree. You can't make a Rickenbacker here in the US for what your Chickenbacker costs. The amount of people who would buy an officially licensed Rickenbacker import would be much much larger than those who buy unlicensed copies, that's just a fact of the market. Your purchase isn't the norm, but if they created an import line you would definitely see it eat into their US sales. As a rule Rickenbacker has stayed the size they are because they release fewer guitars, they don't compromise their designs (often), and they cost what they cost. I doubt very much that their pricing is neting them an outrageous profit margin, I'd wager it's probably much lower than it would be if they created an import line. I could see if you had a few company owners getting outrageously rich by jacking up the pricing on models that cost them significantly less to make (there are a few companies *cough-Dusenberg-cough* that do this), Rickenbacker isn't one of them.

    • @Edward1312

      I cant agree with you I don't think a SE Asia version would eat into the US home market as it hasn't to my knowledge for Gibson with Epiphone or Fender with Squire. I also find Rickenbacker bloody minded and litigious approach infuriating because it's stupid and now doesn't work (as it did in the 70's 80' and 90's) as there are loads of easy ways around it. with the Internet for example you can now easily go to a Chinese manufacturer and have a bespoke guitar made for a fraction of the price if you so wish. Rickenbacker should bite the bullet and just except the inevitable and start allowing SE Asian licenced copies.

      That's cool, I can tell you the market share of Rickenbacker is much much much, fractionally the size of Fender or Gibson. Because of the way they are built they have chosen to remain very small. By that standard, it's not as if everyone wants a Rickenbacker. I still maintain for them, the US only business model is clearly a successful one. It maintains brand exclusivity, it keeps resale values high, and it doesn't unnecessarily eat into their already small market share. If you want an actual Rickenbacker, you buy one built by them and their employees. If you want a copy, by all means feel free to buy a copy. Niche market instruments are just that, niche market instruments. A rick will never be a Les Paul or a Telecaster, hence why you don't see a million people copying them. I understand your position, I still maintain that an import version makes no sense for them. As you said, the market has corrected this by having chinese companies who basically will copy anything. For some players those instruments are just fine, they don't put a value on the name, understandably. As to Rickenbacker being overly litigious, you can't be mad at Rickenbacker for litigating copyright infringement, that's silly.
