  • In this video, Mike Campbell talks about the solid-bodied Rickenbacker 12-string he let Tom use for the cover of "Damn the Torpedoes". He also plays a little of the song he wrote on it, "Here Comes My Girl". This was not included in the film and was a bonus feature on the DVD and Blu-Ray discs.

Amen to that!! That Rick has got a beautiful jangly, twinky, clinky, chimey way of getting its signals across to us!! It's mostly all in those Split-bar vintage, orig. "toaster"(as they're appelated) single-coil pickups!! They have a proprietary sound all their own, 'specially sitting on maple!! I've had the pleasure of owning 3 Rick 12-strings...my orig, which I still own, FireGlo, a MapleGlo 360/12 like Petty plays on The Waiting..which I sadly had to sell to pay bills.., and a 1988 reissue of Geo. Harrison's doublebound 360/12, which preceded Mr Campbell's famous axe. Wasn't too pleased with that one, though gorgeous. Sold it for what I paid, luckily.. Own a mid-70's Rick 4001 bass in FireGlo, love it..plays beautifully, sounds deep & punchy, like they should. Rickenbacker guitars are unique, a Law into themselves, pros & cons notwithstanding.

"It's basically how it went." LOL...Yeah, it's basically how a platinum, gaZILLION-$$ record is done. Can this awesome living legend be any more cavalier? NO ONE else on UA-cam is teaching this song accurately, and here's Mike showing me in thirty minutes. I loved it so much, I found a guy 90 minutes away selling his 2007 Model 620/12 (same body & color), drove there and snatched it up! And Mike's right... It has beautiful, high-harmonic overtones.

They had no idea if that record was gonna be a smash or not. Nobody ever does when they set out to make a record or do any creative endeavour. Easy to look back now and be nonchalant after most of those songs are still on the radio to this day. Anything showbjz related is a crapshoot really.
They were also not doing a lot of overdubs. Just playing straight through printing right to the multitrack through that Neve 8028 at Sound City that Dave Grohl now has.

Each guitar has its own color, but the brightest color for me is the Rick 12-1993 plus model (with the wider neck). I just bought a Rick 12 1993 Plus model (with wider neck). The model happened to be a demo, so had a welcomed discount of about $500 dollars. When I got this baby home, got it tuned and set up...that first full sound sent chills through my body. After God and then my wife, I'm still free falling in love with this Rick-12. For me, personally, nothing communicates such divinity and purity than the jingle jangle of 12 string Rich. Heck with the Harps! In heaven I have no doubt what Angel's really play are Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitars! DUDE!

A fringe-trimmed jacket is weirdly simpatico with a twelve-string guitar. Keep it stringy, everyone.

Yes his painting analogy is what I should use to explain to people why I have so many different looking and sounding guitars and amps. It’s always metal dude who always ask me why I have Rickenbackers and Gretschs even though I’m more of a “hard rock/punk” musician or whatever. And I’m like, sometimes even the heaviest of songs needs a layer or two of super delicate, clean, jangly guitar. Or maybe a layer of crunchy 50’s style rock n’ roll guitar. Subtle dynamic shifts in the instrumental aspect of a song are equally, if not more important than the melody itself. You don’t have to hate the classics to be punk. Pop rock is the ultimate music teacher

Wow, great video clip. Very interesting history in that Rickenbacker. Very recently we were talking about TP and the HB's overall sound and how well put together it is. What Mike just said about selecting a particular guitar tone for a song being like choosing color for a painting is so true. Great tone is a beautiful thing!

Awesome sounding guitar, I had a 360/12 and had to sell it due to Financial down turn and I intend to buy another one, j[they are unbelievable Priced!] just because of the sound and The Heartbreakers and Roger McGuinn. Thanks for showing this one of Yours.

Hardly any guitarists really talks about the personality that each guitar ever made has.. and he’s right.. every guitar whether $100 or $100,000 has one sweet spot. What a great piece of Rock history that Rick is.. and sweet to behold ..

“An’ sometimes I catch myself waitin’, wond’ring, worryin’ about some little thing that don’t add up to *nothin’* … and then …” I hear that incredible harmonic “saturation” of a Ric-12 😎❤️🤩😁!
Thanks, Mike - your stories and insights are the *best* ❤️! I’m still gob-smacked that this was consecutive-production with George’s Ric … as we said in Texas: “Yew Cain’t Make This 💩Up!” 🤠😂🎸

      To Sam B
idiosyncrasies is a good description...... you can’t just treat it like a regular guitar. I try to emulate these sort of sounds. Lots of cascading notes overlapping each other. The Byrd’s tambourine man or turn turn turn.
