- Each novel in the Saga following original Dune deals with the effects of Paul’s impact on the galaxy, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and God Emperor of Dune most of all. At the Start of Messiah, we are immediately faced with problems surrounding Paul's Rule of the Imperium. Dune Messiah opens with a recorded interrogation between a Fremen priest and a historian named Bronso, who has been labeled a “heretic” and sentenced to death, for his accurate writings on emperor Paul Muad’Dib. 12 years have passed since the events of Dune.
At this point in time, Paul Atreides rules from Arrakis as Emperor of the Imperium. Though Paul is the most powerful Emperor ever, he is still incapable of stopping the lethal religious excesses of the juggernaut he has created. The Jihad has been unleashed and it has conquered most of the known universe. 61 billion people have died so far due to Paul’s decision to become the messiah of the Fremen people. But according to Paul’s vision, this is nowhere close to the worst possible outcome for humanity. It is in Dune Messiah that Paul begins the Golden Path. A complex and perilous plan to set humanity on a course that will not lead to its eventual stagnation and extinction, at the same time Paul must balance this with his duties as the ruler of the Galactic Empire and the Center of the Fremen religion.
At the same time, other forces are at work in the galaxy and they are becoming impatient with the new status quo. Several forces are at work and conspire together to undo Paul Atreides and reverse the events that led to his ascension to the throne, these forces include the Bene Gesserit, who are vexed that they have lost control of their Kwisatz Haderach, The Princess Irulan who wishes to bare the imperial children, the spacing guild who are now under pauls control due to his control over the spice, and the Bene Tleilax, who have their own agenda, the Tleilaxu have sent the Face Dance Scytale as their representative.

@@KunjaBihariKrishna Critiquing someone's work, with or without a proper understanding of it, and creating a separate piece of artwork based on another are two entirely different things. When Fincher or Kubrick adapt someone else's story they deliberately try to do their own version of it but try and interpret Fincher's movies and bore him with a misguided "analysis" and he will eviscerate you.
Looking for an artists' approval simply by virtue of being a fan is a misguided exercise in any case.

When I first watched IdeasOfIceAndFire's Dune pieces, I assumed they were professionally written and narrated. When I discovered this is not the case, I was astounded. This young man is amazing, I am grateful for such eloquent retelling of the best science fiction stories ever written.
Surely he scriptted these ? Its completely amazing if he did but got if he didnt it would be another lvl...

The chapter where Paul loses his vision to the stoneburner and continues issuing orders assuredly and without hesitation is so badass and is very possibly my favorite moment in all 6 books

With Alia's story, maybe Frank Herbert was pointing towards some toxic parents and how they ruin their kid's future trying to push them into things favorable only to them.
It brings to mind many children of world leaders and famous people who are hidden from the public eye, yet raised and brought up to be a pawn in a political arena or an extension of their parents legacy. Like the are just a walking conduit for their families name.
@@wakemeup9343 Umm I think you're talking about the theme of pre-destiny and people having their "roles" forced upon them. This trope is often represented using royalty so as to draw a contrast between something we would all want to have yet the character is forced into it.
Sort of the inverse of the Hero's journey. Instead of the Hero rising above "their station in life" the Hero must learn to be their own person and reject the role they are forced into.
A thought just dawned on me reading these comments. Having seen *thousands* of comment sections on a *myriad* of youtube videos all over the youtubes... after all that, I realize with an expletive: "Damn!", the quality of comments here are just incredible!

I recieved a copy of Frank Herberts new book Dune as a Christmas present in 1965 and fell in love with the universe he created. I read the series annually ever since. I just found your series. I commend you. You have done him honour.
This book in the series will always be the darkest and more complicated for me. A true masterwork at odds with what people expected, bringing much needed questioning towards what people assume, have done, do and will still do regarding heroes, leaders and prophets.
The fact that people actually complained about this book and it's outcome is the clear revelation of the deep and ingrained psyche humans have towards some special individuals that manage to shape our destinies.
This book is a deliberated warning towards our nature and millennial traditional way of thinking.

It's my favorite book of the series for this reason.
Uch, completely disagree. People don't have an issue with the message about Paul becoming a tyrant, they have an issue with the book itself! You see Paul's prescience and how it unwittingly placed him at the center of a galactic bloody jihad is never properly explained. Paul insists that the path he is pursuing is better than the alternatives but we do not know what those alternatives are. And even if the point of the book was to demonstrate how it is the very existence of such immense power that causes the inevitability of such destruction, then the book did not really demonstrate this either. The book merely asserts that the atrocities were inevitable without actually showing it.
This series of videos will endure and remain for years as one of the best sources to review de events of the books
Oh man. I remember that scene at the end of the novel. I was floored at just how dramatic it was. So much build up and the tension was crazy.

i knew this book was a different sort of book the moment when the hero from the first book looks back to Genghis Khan and Hitler while his right hand man Stilgar notes their poor murder performance compared to his own. then he literally laughs maniacally
I think this book wasn't what people expected (or wanted) but something needed, taking Paul's role to its logical conclusion. great vids on a great series.

This book is so damn good too. I literally just finished it today and I was blown away by it. I would love to see it put on film. It really is so different from the first book. Messiah is literally a character drama. The story is really contained and intimate and the character work is the driving force. I absolutely loved it! I also just got my copy of Children Of Dune in the mail today, so it's right on time. It's on to the next one!
It was meant to be Frank Herbert's counterpoint to Asimov's Foundation series. Instead of psychohistory leading to a happy ending Frank Herbert wanted to show how Prescience would lead to the death of free will and lead to dictators.
For those of you who have watched or read Attack on Titan the similarities between Eren Jaeger and Paul are incredible. The concepts of free-will (or lack thereof) and having so much power yet being powerless are so interesting in both cases. For people who like Paul's character I would recommend Attack on Titan, even if you think you wouldn't like anime
The only problem is that in attack on titan the ending is really bad, and arguably doesn’t make any sense.
I always thought Paul was more like Eren's father Grisha, and Leto II was more like Eren. Grisha gets the ball rolling but is ultimately horrified by the future he sees. Eren sees the same future, but unlike Grisha, he follows through on making it a reality, turning himself into a monster for humanity to unite against.

@squamousthomas3267 Yeah it really struck me how many parallels to Dune there are in Attack on Titan. The whole ancestoral memory/possession idea is also in AOT with the Titan shifters passing down their memories/aspects of their personality.

The Litany, is poetic,especially the hook. My copies of Dune come from a used book store, and they often have the odd underlining of important phrases. The back-side of the cover has "Fear is the mind killer" scrawled diagonally across.
I wonder if it works? It's easy to remember, but the entire litany is a bit long, and takes some practice to memorize. I just wonder if it works. Were I in *mortal* danger, could it clear my mind, help calm me, and promote logical decisions? I kind of think not. It's catchy, but I don't think it's a true way to dispel actual terror.
The criticism and outcry was surely the point. Dune to many was a heros story, messiah turned that on its head by revealing the absolute annihilation that had been caused Paul's assumption of the role of religious messiah for a fanatical people

it's my favourite too! no one else ever seems to appreciate how brilliant Messiah is! it's the one book i can read over and over again, i feel like Herbert really managed to get the tension and the pacing just perfect. i've read it about 30 times now.
@@ArtemisScribe I think most people don't like it because the pacing is weird. It doesn't have a traditional pacing rythem, it's more like a continuous rising line, it starts really slow and always rises until a spectacular finish

I think the answer to Franks question is simple. Mankind often struggles with purpose, and meaning. Charismatic figures often pose ideas and goals that give people purpose. And fulfillment knowing they are contributing to something greater to themselves.

This book......reading the part of Duncan speaking of his memory with Paul when he was a child, recalling the events at the seaport market, made me cry so much, remembering the characters and how far Paul as come and now he is finally free. Going through the Dune book, then reading this entire book as well, just made me love these characters and the philosophy laid within such a complete sci fi novel.
I am now about to begin reading the third book.
I loved Paul's character. I'm unsure why some label him as evil. He acted in a manner typical of any normal person facing his circumstances. The occurrence of jihad was unavoidable, and it was his religious adherents who carried out the action.
Well, I certainly wouldn’t allow 63 billion people to die just to preserve my bloodline and then just let my wife die just to hold power….

These are great! I read Dune books 1&2, 2 years ago and now want to finish the series. This and the first video in this series you made for book 1 were perfect refreshers to get me ready for Children of Dune

I've read up to the children of Dune twenty years ago on the back of watching the movie .
It's not an easy read because you are bombarded and tormented throughout with feelings visions action and intent .
I'm sure Frank Herbert must have used the Mélange to perpetuate his vision on to the page .

The guild highliner is one of the neatest things in dune, such a massive transport, but also so impartial it’s possible for two warring factions to have assets aboard in separate holds off the ship. How does one win a war unless the guild is behind you. It’s the two things that shape the universe most I think, the guild hold on transportation , and the fall of projectile or energy based weapons (giving rise to hand to hand combat) because of the invention of the personal shield.

I never quite liked the visual interpretation of Navigators looking almost exactly like fish men. Their mutations can vary, but I really loved Lynch's Navigator. Sure it was basically Eraserhead turned Navigator, but I always picture them to look more like that than how awfully they were done in the miniseries.
Agreed. I would argue, the Dune Messiah miniseries [2003] plagarised the visual idea of the 'Floating Fishmen' from Star Trek 'Enterprise' - one of the six alien species of 'XIndi' - from ST Entriprise - The Xindi story arch of the 3rd Season (Temporal War).

I love that you’re doing this series. I’m such a huge fan of the original Dune series, and you can tell be your videos how much of a fan you’ve become. I can even get over how you pronounce certain names (to each his own, lol.) These videos are a great way to revisit the series and mythos without retreading the entire series. And I agree with other viewers, I can’t wait until you get to God Emperor; I’m partial to Children of Dune, and an definitely looking forward to your guide to that book. Bro I'm new to the Dune series and right now I'm currently reading "Messiah". After going through the first book I couldn't help continue on with the expansive story line. That quote at the beginning, man. Holy shit. Blew my mind. I had no idea that’s what Dune was based on. It’s relevant AF in the current political climate. I used to take this channel for granted. Often your videos would get buried among my other subscriptions. However, you’re like the fucking Jedi master, the sensei, the Dean of all things Dune. I search out your channel for content now instead of watching because I happened to notice it in my feed. Well done, sir. This channel is outstanding.

This series is absolutely gorgeous. I had no idea how large the ideas would be as I read on past the first book. It just gets better and bigger. So grateful I finally started it.✌️🇺🇸
What can I say? Great work. The millions lost under Mau'dibs rule must always be tempered with the potential billions that would have been lost had Paul strayed from the fledgling Golden Path. It's hinted at constantly in the book. Though Leto II fully expanded the concept, Paul was aware of and adhered to the Golden Path.
Kwasimitsu prescience and omniscience are curses. No one will ever understand the perspective
It was billions dead, not millions. It was entire civilisations.
As for the merits of the Golden Path, well, there are merits. But that's still untold billions dead.

That was always the weirdest thing about the series to me. The message of the early books, not to trust charismatic leaders or treat your country's government like a religion seems to be undercut by the fact that the Atreides are in fact the chosen ones who save humanity from itself. Isn't that going back on what the first two books were about?
@@MC-pt8kv the Atreides did not want to go down the paths they went down. But they saw that they had to. Because the consequences of them not going down those paths would have been even worse for humanity, as hard as that is to believe.
