Alia’s story never fails to break my heart. Consciousness forced upon her before birth, sister of someone completely unrelatable, abandoned by her mother, and victim to her mind. Especially how Messiah lulls you to think she can live a (somewhat) normal life with love.

Near the end there's a point where Ghani feels the inner personalities clamoring to take over, but then feels her mother standing at the door to keep them shut out. I smiled huge at that part.. I like to think of Chani's ego memory protecting her daughter against what happened to Alia.. and to some extent Leto.
I think i pulled off a Ghanima. I'd had Alia's death spoiled for me, and I forced myself to forget it. Until i read it myself, and the memories came crashing back

Paul Atreides wasn't as concerned about the personal sacrifice of the Golden Path, but betraying his philosophy of not committing atrocities for the greater path of mankind. Leto's Fremen philosophy allowed him to allow evil acts in order to achieve the greater good. Such an interesting dichotomy, and allowing the Dune saga to be so morally complex.
I think Paul knew it must be done and just couldn’t bring himself to commit atrocity. Leto was able to, only after forsaking his humanity, literal and figurative. I think the author was saying something about what it means to be human.
The Dune series has always been too much for me to absorb to get into it. But I could tell It was deep. These videos have seriously helped me get the foundation of the universe and I think I'm ready to start reading them again and have dusted them off after years of sitting in my closet. Thanks for that. I have covid 19 (beating it) and am quarantined for the foreseeable so having something to deep dive into has helped a lot.

I'm a 70's child too. Read the Dune cycle many times but I didn't like the 1st three books from Herbert's son (House Corrino, Harkonnen and Atreides). The David Lynch adaptation wasn't that bad. For a project this big done in the 80's, I thought it was amazing, and I still do. I mean I get your point; there was many things that could've been better, but I'm pretty sure we would've disliked some parts of of Alejandro Jodorowsky's version too. You should watch the documentary "Jodorowsky's Dune". It's awesome! Can't wait for Villeneuve's version!!!!!!
The final line of “Children of Dune” is one of the best final lines in all sci-fi: “One of us had to accept the agony, and he was always the stronger.”
I managed to read the series completely blind without knowing anything, so when it was revealed that Farad’n was the one writing all the historical notes at the beginning of chapters it was such an amazing revelation to me.

Alia's mother abandoned her and made her live w/ a weight that she was unable to carry on her own. And her brother Paul was too busy with his holy jihad to give her the help she needed. She was all alone.
Just started reading the first book and this is the best thing I've read in my 32 yrs of living on this world.. its amazing how creative a human mind can innovate
I love these videos because Dune is so dense that I forget the details. These help remind me of stuff so things make more sense as I get further into the series.
...I found it despairing for Alia, that she @ 19 was left by both he support to fend for herself, in the midst of all those enemies that surrounded her. I thought is was cowardice of her brother and especially her mother, for leaving her unsupported. No wonder she succumbed?
jessica proved once and for all that she really was a vile piece of shit when she abandoned alia. Alia is the way she is because of jessica, and only because of jessica.
But then the theme of parents or parent figures appearing infallible only to then fail and leave the next generation to fend for themselves continues through the series.
Can you imagine being Paul? You know the future, you know you are the cause of Trillions of people dyeing. This is the thing he knew it like he was the one killing them. Remember also if you kill 1 person your a murderer if u kill 10 billion it becomes a statistic. I dnt know how that would weigh on ur soul. Leto had billions of people to help him take the weight of ALL he had to do. I think Paul knew Alias terrible fate and he could do nothing to stop it. Remember he was the tool of fate, he could not escape it. He was trying to save ALL of humanity from some great enemy. But I do agree with u Alia is one of the most tragic characters in the entire series.
No, he reads all those Arabic (Mahdi, ar-Rakis, Wadi etc.), and Germanic (Laandsraat) names as if they were English. It is unacceptable. The only foreign word word he read propely is the Slavic word "Sietch" (Polish ortography: Sicz, Ukrainian ortography: Січ).
After i finished a book i come here to get a review and hopefully some more explanation cause i feel stupid af, at this point after three books, iam pretty sure its meant to feel like that? The quality of these videos is crazy, the level of detail, the images and the way u read them is a treat in itself. Thank u so much for the hard work u put into this.
These eloquent readings and explanations of these stories give me a profound appreciation of these novels which I am now itching to purchase. It also makes me love the movie even more. Its flaws and how it strays from the novel is completely excusable. I never knew the dune universe was soooo complex and intricate and to translate that into a 2 hour film was quite an accomplishment. Had Lynch poured all those intricacies into a 4 hour movie it would have bombed utterly even if the handful dune scholars at the time may have loved it.

I want to reread the books but can't find the time. This is a really nice middle ground. I can't watch the movies again because they just fuck with my experience of the books. That world just lives inside of me. I was backpacking through the middle east and had the books with me as my only entertainment. I stayed with Bedouin people in the sinai desert and only a few of them spoke English. So it was very introspective. Can you imagine what it was like to read dune in that environment? This was before phones and there wasn't even electricity. I would wait for the sun to come up so I could continue reading. Later I ended up at a kind of spiritual commune in the south Israeli desert. The desert was different over there and the commune was built on an old army base. They did army training in the desert nearby and at night you could see tank convoys or herds of camels. I continued the books over there. I dont think any reading experience can come close to that. The story of those books often fades, but the world was as much around me as inside of me
The character trope of Alia and Her mother Jessica, remind me much of Mary Shelleys themes in Frankenstein. Dr. Frankensteins monster, Alia, and Leto II are some of the saddest characters I have ever experienced. It brings one to feel grateful about a normal human life.

I loved DUNE and the Dune universe since the 1st time I read them; and I find your DUNE videos like water in the desert. The art you used, the editing, the reading parts - they simply bring me so much joy that I'd like to drop all the books I'm currently reading and start my Dune saga all over again. Terrific video, mate, you deserve tons of respect. My favorite part in this book was when Stilgar killed Duncan.
I've been waiting for this. But GEoD is the one I've been REALLY looking forward to since this series started. Cannot wait! This video was incredible. I was so psyched to see the hour+ long run time because I knew nothing would be left out. Between the attention to detail, the artwork/music and the intense readings of excerpts from the book... the videos in this series are perfect.
Dune is what got me into mind expansion techniques and away from religions. Best books I've ever came across. My parents grew up reading the books and use to read it to me when I was growing up which I like to think kept me from messing up like most teenager's do. The dune novels should be required reading in school.
The fact that Pual refused the Golden Path (even though he couldn't see to the end of it) is very telling of his character. He had already seen and been the cause of too much death and destruction. I think because he was not preborn, he could not except the further destruction of his humanity. He would have rather seen humans die out on its own than be the cause of so much of its destruction for a possibility of survival. Leto II may be doing this for the right reasons, but has questionable morals. Paul is more of a hero in my eyes.
Despite knowing what was to come Paul couldn’t emotionally accept it when it became reality. Chani’s death was too painful for Paul to truly bare it. Leto was much more emotionally distanced from it
I feel so sorry for Alia. The curse she is fated to before she is eveb born is monstrous and she is left unguided in how to fight it. Even her own mother takes it as a given that she is doomed, yet Ghanima becomes living proof that had Jessica stayed and shown her more of a mother's love she could have warded off the Baron much as Chani's love for Ghani warded her
Well that was bloody, well and truly, spectacular. Searching for Dune analysis/commentary a few months ago, I stumbled upon this channel and have been waiting with bated breath for this installment (my personal favorite Dune novel, btw). Worth every minute of waiting. And then... and then... along the way IOIAF dropped another glistening gem of a promise upon our laps: A treatment of Asimov's "Foundation". Once that gets going in earnest, to keep the content going I would also love, LOVE to see a treatment of The Culture books by Iain Banks.

I have a newborn and REALLY want to read God Emperor but I just don’t have time to read this book. My son and I say thank you for your efforts, and for giving new dads like me a chance to read the series.
I had to read the whole series 4 times before a little bit of understanding seeped in. (I was in my late twenties and not so bright) Now I revisited Dune through this channel and I am amazed. I want to read it again. Being there. +++!
Ok I gotta tell you how much I loved watching this Video last night. You really GET what the dune books are about and have a masterful way of telling the story through these beautiful renderings of the characters. I read these back in the 80's and have always loved them. They are dense and smart in a way that you don't often see. I got home late last night from work, and decided to play this video. I've watched some of the others and enjoyed them too. But something about this one really touched me last night. Thank you for doing such a great job with these. GOT is nice and all, but I think your pivot to Dune was a great idea and you're doing a great job and really do it justice. Something not all the Movies and TV productions have done - I thought Scifi channel came closest to really capturing the spirit of the material. The lynch movie was a disappointment, it watered down the impact and turned "the wierding way" into a tech gadget and stupid. Even though it was glorious to see his visuals and see the material produced on the big screen with mostly practical effects as well. I hope that the upcoming reboots and TV production are half as good as you have been at capturing the essence of the material. I'm now a subscriber of your channel keep up the excellent work. :)
Really, really high quality stuff mate! Absolutely incredible. Alia is my favourite Dune character. It's no surprise that she and Duncan fell in love - they did not choose their paths, but were the victims of the ambition of others. They were powerless against the power arrayed against them. Yet they loved, and sacrificed their love of each other for each other. Of all the characters in the book, I am the most sympathetic to her. And whilst she "succcumbed" to the abomination which destroyed her, there remained a tiny corner of her soul in which love still existed. And it was that corner of her soul still containing love that overcame the hateful abomination she had become. In the end it was love overcame the demon in her soul. Love sacrificed itself for the sake of love itself. The Duncan gholas were very different from that point on. Wearied, colder, resigned. Less human. Well that's my interpretation anyway!
Phenomenal summary of one of the most interesting and convoluted novels in the series. You did a solid job unwinding the layers within layers of political intrigue Herbert squeezed in here. I think you also captured the heart of The Golden Path. Paul was unwilling to make the personal sacrifice, but he also could not accept responsibility for the millennia of sacrifice which must be thrust upon Humanity in order to save it. Just realized that the Golden Path has parallels to the Foundation in Asimov's books. Great minds think alike, I suppose.
these videos have me stoked on actually reading the series, now that i know how this thing tends to unfold. it used to feel like "essential, or required reading". now i understand why, and that helps immensely. thank you so much for this.
I think this is my 5th time through your dune series, I don't normally watch a video more than once, these are masterfully done, a brilliant compression of a complex story so compellingly delivered.
Could you do a video on Alia Atreides after God Emperor? I loved her character since the first book and found her fall into abomination to be so sad. It’s been years since I read the books but her story stuck with me the most out of all the characters.
Probably my favorite character, tbh i don't like much what happened to her, it felt weird and out nowhere and there is no catharsis to her ending, it's just sad. Wasted opportunities, imho. edit: Also, i liked lady Jessica in Dune, she is clearly a flaw character but a very well written one. There is a great moment with her when she tells Paul to be his own person, it is a great arc for her... after that book though :sigh:
@@bartomiejzak7974 Because Yueh himself believed she was dead when he joined the house, and indeed until very shortly before the events of Dune. So no one was lying, there was no lie to uncover.
@@bartomiejzak7974 You may want to re-read Dune. The reason that Yueh was even able to bypass his conditioning was because his wife was a bene gesserit who taught him how to break his conditioning. The fact that Yueh was even able to break his conditioning was unkown to the Atreides. Also, Yueh knew his wife was killed by the Harkonen. The only reason he betrayed the Atreides was so that he could guarantee his revenge against Vladamir by having Leto kill him.
This was the whole point. The first book was designed to be disguised as a typical kind of heros journey story whereas herbert's vision was more a complete criticism of the whole idea of the charismatic hero and leader and how we should reject them. Paul becomes just that at the end of the first book. Then we get the idea pushed further with leto II who is pretty much an evil tyrant even though technically hes doing what he does to save the human race
@@jackburton4536 What a dumbass that Yueh was. He knew his wife was dead, and he still betrayed the Atreides. Had he not done that, and let Tufir know what the Barron's plan! was it's very likely that Leto would have defeated the combined Harkonen and Corrino army and become Emperor himself, having exposed Shaddam for the backstabber that he was and won the full support of the Landsraad. Would not have been a more satisfying revenge?

I finally read Dune this month. I'm on God Emperor right now. I wish I had read these years ago. I think Frank Herbert is my new favorite author. These are brilliant 👏
These videos are so good! First time reading through the six books and it’s helpful to come back and watch these after I’ve read one book and started the next, almost like rereading the previous ones to keep important details in mind. Thanks for making these!
Would you consider doing videos on the philosophies on life, politics, etc, that Herbert touches upon in his books? I know you lightly go over them but as well as you cover the plot & characters of these books the philosophy he writes is on par with Niche, or many other great authors. Just an optimistic thought 😉

When Ghanima says “I told you to pity her” after what happens, it was so emotional.
The more I learn about Alia, the more I find myself sympathizing with her.

I want to reread the books but can't find the time. This is a really nice middle ground. I can't watch the movies again because they just fuck with my experience of the books. That world just lives inside of me.
I was backpacking through the middle east and had the books with me as my only entertainment. I stayed with Bedouin people in the sinai desert and only a few of them spoke English.
So it was very introspective. Can you imagine what it was like to read dune in that environment? This was before phones and there wasn't even electricity. I would wait for the sun to come up so I could continue reading.
Later I ended up at a kind of spiritual commune in the south Israeli desert. The desert was different over there and the commune was built on an old army base.
They did army training in the desert nearby and at night you could see tank convoys or herds of camels. I continued the books over there.
I dont think any reading experience can come close to that. The story of those books often fades, but the world was as much around me as inside of me

The character trope of Alia and Her mother Jessica, remind me much of Mary Shelleys themes in Frankenstein.
Dr. Frankensteins monster, Alia, and Leto II are some of the saddest characters I have ever experienced. It brings one to feel grateful about a normal human life.

I loved DUNE and the Dune universe since the 1st time I read them; and I find your DUNE videos like water in the desert. The art you used, the editing, the reading parts - they simply bring me so much joy that I'd like to drop all the books I'm currently reading and start my Dune saga all over again. Terrific video, mate, you deserve tons of respect. My favorite part in this book was when Stilgar killed Duncan.
I've been waiting for this. But GEoD is the one I've been REALLY looking forward to since this series started. Cannot wait! This video was incredible. I was so psyched to see the hour+ long run time because I knew nothing would be left out. Between the attention to detail, the artwork/music and the intense readings of excerpts from the book... the videos in this series are perfect.
Dune is what got me into mind expansion techniques and away from religions. Best books I've ever came across. My parents grew up reading the books and use to read it to me when I was growing up which I like to think kept me from messing up like most teenager's do. The dune novels should be required reading in school.

The fact that Pual refused the Golden Path (even though he couldn't see to the end of it) is very telling of his character. He had already seen and been the cause of too much death and destruction. I think because he was not preborn, he could not except the further destruction of his humanity. He would have rather seen humans die out on its own than be the cause of so much of its destruction for a possibility of survival. Leto II may be doing this for the right reasons, but has questionable morals. Paul is more of a hero in my eyes.
Despite knowing what was to come Paul couldn’t emotionally accept it when it became reality. Chani’s death was too painful for Paul to truly bare it. Leto was much more emotionally distanced from it
I feel so sorry for Alia. The curse she is fated to before she is eveb born is monstrous and she is left unguided in how to fight it. Even her own mother takes it as a given that she is doomed, yet Ghanima becomes living proof that had Jessica stayed and shown her more of a mother's love she could have warded off the Baron much as Chani's love for Ghani warded her

Well that was bloody, well and truly, spectacular. Searching for Dune analysis/commentary a few months ago, I stumbled upon this channel and have been waiting with bated breath for this installment (my personal favorite Dune novel, btw). Worth every minute of waiting.
And then... and then... along the way IOIAF dropped another glistening gem of a promise upon our laps: A treatment of Asimov's "Foundation". Once that gets going in earnest, to keep the content going I would also love, LOVE to see a treatment of The Culture books by Iain Banks.
I really love these videos because the pictures and the perfect summarizing make it much easier to understand what I've just read.

Ok I gotta tell you how much I loved watching this Video last night. You really GET what the dune books are about and have a masterful way of telling the story through these beautiful renderings of the characters. I read these back in the 80's and have always loved them. They are dense and smart in a way that you don't often see. I got home late last night from work, and decided to play this video. I've watched some of the others and enjoyed them too. But something about this one really touched me last night. Thank you for doing such a great job with these. GOT is nice and all, but I think your pivot to Dune was a great idea and you're doing a great job and really do it justice. Something not all the Movies and TV productions have done - I thought Scifi channel came closest to really capturing the spirit of the material. The lynch movie was a disappointment, it watered down the impact and turned "the wierding way" into a tech gadget and stupid. Even though it was glorious to see his visuals and see the material produced on the big screen with mostly practical effects as well. I hope that the upcoming reboots and TV production are half as good as you have been at capturing the essence of the material. I'm now a subscriber of your channel keep up the excellent work. :)

Alia is my favourite Dune character. It's no surprise that she and Duncan fell in love - they did not choose their paths, but were the victims of the ambition of others. They were powerless against the power arrayed against them.
Yet they loved, and sacrificed their love of each other for each other.
Of all the characters in the book, I am the most sympathetic to her. And whilst she "succcumbed" to the abomination which destroyed her, there remained a tiny corner of her soul in which love still existed.
And it was that corner of her soul still containing love that overcame the hateful abomination she had become. In the end it was love overcame the demon in her soul. Love sacrificed itself for the sake of love itself.
The Duncan gholas were very different from that point on. Wearied, colder, resigned. Less human.
Well that's my interpretation anyway!

Phenomenal summary of one of the most interesting and convoluted novels in the series. You did a solid job unwinding the layers within layers of political intrigue Herbert squeezed in here.
I think you also captured the heart of The Golden Path. Paul was unwilling to make the personal sacrifice, but he also could not accept responsibility for the millennia of sacrifice which must be thrust upon Humanity in order to save it.
Just realized that the Golden Path has parallels to the Foundation in Asimov's books. Great minds think alike, I suppose.
I would a definitely read a Dune series set between Children Of Dune and God Emporer Of Dune !
Don't go giving Kevin Anderson the idea. He'll produce 3,000 years of Leto II as BBC Sherlock.
The best part of finishing the books is coming here and recapping it all and getting some visuals.

Could you do a video on Alia Atreides after God Emperor? I loved her character since the first book and found her fall into abomination to be so sad. It’s been years since I read the books but her story stuck with me the most out of all the characters.

Probably my favorite character, tbh i don't like much what happened to her, it felt weird and out nowhere and there is no catharsis to her ending, it's just sad. Wasted opportunities, imho.
edit: Also, i liked lady Jessica in Dune, she is clearly a flaw character but a very well written one. There is a great moment with her when she tells Paul to be his own person, it is a great arc for her... after that book though :sigh:

@@bartomiejzak7974 Because Yueh himself believed she was dead when he joined the house, and indeed until very shortly before the events of Dune. So no one was lying, there was no lie to uncover.
@@bartomiejzak7974 You may want to re-read Dune. The reason that Yueh was even able to bypass his conditioning was because his wife was a bene gesserit who taught him how to break his conditioning. The fact that Yueh was even able to break his conditioning was unkown to the Atreides. Also, Yueh knew his wife was killed by the Harkonen. The only reason he betrayed the Atreides was so that he could guarantee his revenge against Vladamir by having Leto kill him.

This was the whole point. The first book was designed to be disguised as a typical kind of heros journey story whereas herbert's vision was more a complete criticism of the whole idea of the charismatic hero and leader and how we should reject them. Paul becomes just that at the end of the first book. Then we get the idea pushed further with leto II who is pretty much an evil tyrant even though technically hes doing what he does to save the human race
@@jackburton4536 What a dumbass that Yueh was. He knew his wife was dead, and he still betrayed the Atreides. Had he not done that, and let Tufir know what the Barron's plan! was it's very likely that Leto would have defeated the combined Harkonen and Corrino army and become Emperor himself, having exposed Shaddam for the backstabber that he was and won the full support of the Landsraad. Would not have been a more satisfying revenge?
I missed this series, i thouight it was gone due to the long wait between messiah and this video, great work as always, can't wait for god emperor, the best book in the Dune series, and if it wasn't gated by 3 other books, I would put it in the "EVERY HUMAN HAS TO READ THIS" category

Would you consider doing videos on the philosophies on life, politics, etc, that Herbert touches upon in his books? I know you lightly go over them but as well as you cover the plot & characters of these books the philosophy he writes is on par with Niche, or many other great authors. Just an optimistic thought 😉
