    Having been introduced to this universe very, very recently through the recent Dune movie, I feel somewhat overwhelmed with the sheer scope and complexity of this story. I'm really grateful for your content for clarifying a lot of questions I've had since my first watch. I really, really want to get stuck into this saga. I haven't felt this engaged by a fictional world in ages I just want to know more.

    After being hooked in by the movie, I started reading Dune in January of last year. Upon finishing the first book I stumbled upon this video, but as soon as I saw that it had future spoilers, I stopped watching
    Today, 1 year later, I just finished Chapterhouse. And I can confidently say that this series changed my life in this past 12 months, and changed my perspective on many things. Frank Herbert is a genius and I'm thankful to be able to glimpse at his thoughts so many years after his passing
    I can also now watch this video entirely and say: thank you, Quinn, for sharing your passion with us. No one in my close proximity actually read these books, and watching your videos sometimes feel like discussing theories about Dune with a friend. Thanks!

    First of all I would like to thank everyone that has enjoyed, liked, and commented on my video. I have taken into consideration some of your comments regarding my pronunciation. Some of them agree with such as Kwisatz Haderach and Tleilaxu. Names like Alia, and Leto could have different pronunciations depending on the accent. I also might agree that the word Missionaria Protectiva should be pronounced as "misheeonara" but I definitely disagree that matre should be pronounced "Ma-truh" or "Ma-ter" I will check with the audio books and improve the pronunciations that I think need to be improved.

    • @Shan_Dalamani

      @IdeasOfIceAndFire:
      First, thank you for making this video. I stumbled on it only recently and decided to post some comments and have been having a very enjoyable conversation with another fan.
      Regarding the pronunciation: I would ask that you pronounce "Alia" as the name is pronounced in the Lynch movie, with the emphasis on the first syllable. There's really not much I disagree with in the Lynch movie's pronunciation of most names and terms, other than Chani. My personal preference is a hard "C" and the "h" is silent, so neither the movie nor miniseries matches the sound in my mind when I read her name. Frank Herbert made a recording a long time ago in which he discussed the pronunciation of some of the terms in the novel. I don't know if that is still available, as it wasn't on UA-cam where I heard it.
      "Matre", I think, should be pronounced as "Mater" - as in the Latin word, with a long "a". There are many words that are pronounced the same no matter the order of the last two letters (consider the English pronunciation of words like "liter" and "litre"; in English Canada they're pronounced the same, although some people prefer the French spelling).

    As a child in the 80s, I wanted to watch the movie, my parents said they didn't understand it and didn't like it. I was strangely compelled to watch it, almost as if pushed to. It came on HBO one morning and I watched it instead of Saturday Cartoons and understood more than my parents did who tried to explain what they had seen for themselves. They were completely LOST and didn't understand anything. I, now know, that I understood the story quite well at age 9. I'm still strangely pulled to this universe. I noticed the Warhammer 40k stuff that was inspired from Dune when I got into that game system. Weird to hear this story now explained and seeing some inspirations Frank must have had from the Bible. Always leaves me with a strange but familiar feeling when seeing anything associated with Dune. Like....prophetic feeling.... I dont know how to explain it. A.I. thought explored in the 60s when most of the world was concerned with Vietnam and conflict. But Frank was over here warning us about the far future of computers taking over humans. Crazy.

      @zannaifacedancer5915 5 років тому +4

      It did not confuse me so much, since Children of Dune ended up with Leto II as the emperor and becoming a great sandworm too, so despite shifting centuries, GEOD was logically related to that ending. The jump in Heretics confused me at first, however now I bless that feeling. By the way I love your username.

    This is my favorite book series of all time, it changed my life as a teenager. I suffer from anxiety and I recite the Litany Against Fear everytime I feel it coming on as crazy as that sounds. This book series showed me what it meant to be a Messiah, and to know the suffering of being a man cursed to be the savior of mankind at the cost of his own existence. I cried my eyes out at the end of Paul's saga.

      Me too. I have adapted my own version of the litany against fear and i still use it when necessary:
      I shall not fear.
      Fear is the mindkiller.
      Fear is the little death,
      that obliterates the mind.
      I shall not fight fear.
      I shall embrace it.
      And when i turn my inner eye,
      To see its path
      Only i shall remain.

      The new Dune part 1 is PHENOMENALLY portrayed on screen with over all incredible portrayal of all the characters and plot fantastically presented on screen. The film is FILMED with nuances from performances and subtle foreshadowing and metaphorical symbolism of what’s happening and what’s to come! Obviously not the same as the book but it’s still VERY nuanced in all fronts of its filmmaking and portrayal of its story! The new movie DID gain mass popularity and so did the channel, how to look at the incredibly amazing presentation the movie presents the story! PHENOMENAL film and a masterpiece of modern sci-fi cinema entirely! LOVE this movie for what it was able to achieve and be and I’m so glad many others agree for what it was able to achieve!

After ur finished, is it possible for you to cover the remaining books like the Butlerian Jihad, House Corrino, winds of Dune, etc... written by Brian Herbert, his son and Kevin Anderson. I've read all 6 originals yrs ago as well as 10 books in the expanded series. They're pretty good. Basically all prequels except for the the newest ones. If you haven't read them yet,i recommended that you should start. They fill in all the history, bad blood between the houses , the machine wars,etc.

      Interesting mix of novels, Lynch movie, and not too much of the nuDune nonsense by KJA/BH.
      I hope you will leave nuDune out of this. They contradict established in-universe history, character traits, and the actual _character of the Dune universe itself_ with their repetitious, retconned stuff.
      Some of the pronunciation is uneven in this video. I hope that's cleaned up in future videos (especially the weird pronunciation of Alia's name; that grated, when it's made perfectly clear in both the Lynch movie and the Dune/Children of Dune miniseries how her name is pronounced).

    I first encountered the Dune novels in 1978. At that time the series ended with The God Emperor of Dune. I was so blown away by the series and the insights it provided into the human psyche that I made it a point to read the 4 novels yearly. I was able to maintain this practice until I got married in 1991. Since then I have read the series regularly but not yearly. I also added in the Chapterhouse Dune and Heretics of Dune novels when they were published. I found your site this evening while battling insomnia and trying to relax. I am very impressed with "Quinn's Ideas". You have obviously spent a great deal of time and effort in your works about the Dune books. I want to take the opportunity to thank you for that. Ir is rare for me to find anyone who has studied this sci-fi series like I have but you obviously have. I would love to discuss viewpoints and observations from the novels with you, especially God Emperor of Dune. With the release of the Dune movie approaching, I am going to study all of your guides and other presentations. I find Frank Herbert's Dune universe to be fascinating and no one has produced an adequate adaptation of his work for a movie. I hope they are successful this time. I agree with your assessments of the previous productions and have often believed that the only way I could get it done right would be to do it myself...LOL. Although I would love to try and have definite ideas of what it should be, I am intrigued by what I have seen of the latest production. I can only hope that they have achieved something special and epic. I will be watching and posting. Hopefully we will meet up at some point. I agree with just about every interpretation that you have made from the novels. I am impressed. We will chat sometime.

      @@gigglehertz I also love Frank Herbert's style so much. That's why I adore all the first six books. His son and Kevin J. Anderson just couldn't match that in my opinion, their books are still interesting because of the story, but something that I dearly love in the first six books is missing. Such a shame that Frank didn't live to finish the original story.

      @@vincentbalinos4114 (Heavy spoilers for Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune. Final warning): Paul and Chani had a son and named him Leto II (Original Dune). This son was killed in a Sardaukar raid (As Mandobird1 said). Some 12 years later (Dune Messiah), they have two more children, twins, one of whom they name Leto II. So Leto II the elder was the first one from the original Dune, and Leto II the younger was the second one born in Dune Messiah. Funnily enough, since Leto II the younger was preborn, he was in some ways older than Leto II the elder ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Hi Quinn! I just wanted to say thank you for all of your work over the years bringing this series to new eyes. When the movie was announced a few years ago, I watched the trailer and two days later, your video on spice melange popped up in my recommended. I slowly knocked out video after video until I decided to tackle your overviews of the books. After seeing the movie, I went back and rewatched your videos with a new fervor until I couldn’t take it any longer and bought the books for myself.
    I’m currently a hundred and change pages in to Children of Dune, and I haven’t read a book without losing interest partway through since I *had* to read books a decade ago in high school, and I want to thank you again. Not only have you brought an amazing series to my attention, you’ve resparked the love I had for reading when I younger.
    Reading through Dune and Dune Messiah, I found myself drawing what I think is an interesting parallel to prescience as portrayed in the novels. Having watched your full overviews in the novels multiple times, there were parts that I felt like I already knew, all the way down to recognizing the quotes you used - and it gave me a sense of security, I was in a place “I had already seen,” as Paul does entering situations he has seen in his visions. It gave me an exhilarating feeling to reach the small sections that were left out or briefly summarized in your videos, I didn’t know what was going to happen, I knew what would happen in the end, but in the moment to moment, I was blind.
    I hope that makes sense to and can be related to by at least one person out there.
    And Quinn, if you see this, thank you again. I look forward to your future Dune videos, and I’m excited to dive in to other series you have recommended. You have exquisite taste.
