    My simplistic view on this:
    IQ (and other ways of measuring intelligence) = Potential
    EQ = Unlock the potential
    Is EQ really more important than IQ? If you do not have the ability to understanding something then it does not matter how high your EQ is, you still don't understand it. Which means that you cannot perform particular jobs.
    My complex view on this:
    Neither IQ, nor EQ, nor any other single set of abilities / intelligence determine if you will be successful or not. It is up to you to develop yourself in the areas as needed during various phases in life.

      ***** Most people in life never unlock their potential. Therefore if IQ is potential and EQ is what allows you to unlock the potential then it makes sense that for most people today EQ is more important.

      But if you have no IQ, you might not even grasp the concept of EQ...
      Hence my view that IQ is more important.

    This video helped me a lot, Leo.
    I found I am slightly above average in emotional intelligence. Turns out this is what has been holding me back from my dreams:
    I found all this default behaviour inside of me:
    DEFAULT BEHAVIOUR->
    Being suspicious of people
    Feeling something-like 'being insulted’ when not replied to
    Getting bogged down by hurtful words from parents
    Getting irritated by people from the past should they try to bully me
    Getting irritated by critical comments passed by people I have begun disliking
    Feeling the need to rush with work, rush to work, rush with my endeavours so that I don’t stay ‘left-behind.’
    Easily breaking down in grief
    I am reactive to rejections

    1. I can identify my emotions and I am self aware (tick)
    2. I'm average at controlling my emotions
    3. I'm good at understanding other people's emotions (tick)
    4. I'm bad at managing relationships - really bad
    - No anger management problems
    - I am accountable to myself but I do blame the world for some things
    - I'm honest with myself, lie to other people
    - I don't trust anyone!
    - I am assertive
    - I could work on my communication skills although I don't struggle with it (communication skills mediocre)
    - I am frantic and stressed around work, calm when around people (not working)
    - I am always judging myself and thinking negative thoughts
    - It takes a long time for me to make a decision
    - I procrastinate weirdly (I used to think I didn't have procrastination problems). Not directly (like I don't say, that's it I'm not working or I'll do it later) instead, I set up barriers to working. I go and eat lots of food so I don't have enough energy to work, I sleep late so the next day I feel too shit to work, I find some other distraction that I feel like needs my immediate attention (although it may not), I make myself depressed with some other irrelevant thing (oh I'm so fat or oh he doesn't like me).
    - I have super bad presentation skills - really really bad.
    - I'm a good listener & people think I'm a good listener

    Great video. I do disagree with one thing you said "if you lack confidence then you are lacking in EQ" I know personally that after doing the NBI profile($300 profiling that professionals use) that I scored very high in being emotionally intelligent. However, I lack confidence. I scored highly in all 4 quadrants of the brain (scoring highly isn't necessarily a good thing, it just means this is how you process information). I have always been very unconfident but been able to manage my emotions with intuition as to how other people feel. I truly feel I am very emotionally intelligent. But it is not an easy brain to have. I feel the need to take responsibility for what other people are thinking about me.

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  9 років тому +2

      Notice what happens in the moment the next time you feel unconfident or insecure. What you'll see is an emotional mess. Right? You can't be unemotional and insecure at the same time. Check it out.

    • @brendanball
      @brendanball 9 років тому

      I believe you can be unemotional and insecure at the same time. I am used to having low confidence and being insecure, and I don't see an emotional mess. What I see is that I am simply unconfident and insecure. It is a linear feeling that usually doesn't change. It doesn't change my outward emotions, or the way I act and I can usually redirect my thoughts. My go-to feeling is usually low confidence, but it certainly doesn't seem to me as ever being an emotional mess. I am intelligent enough to usually have an objective view of it. I am 25 yrs old, have a house, 2 reliable vehicles, and am a high level manager after working in this company for 2 and a half years. I achieved this with no help from my parents, and little to none post-secondary education. If the next time I felt unconfident and insecure (which is everyday) I saw an emotional mess I would not see the successes I have had so far in my life (not trying to have a big head about it just having an objective view of my life). Just my 2 cents.

    • @ActualizedOrg

      fgtyhr Look deeper. Insecurity doesn't come from thin air. It's not magic. It is an emotion/thought. This takes more mindfulness to see.

      I don't know which EQ test you took, but on the one I took, a 78/100 would be considered low. I took the test from Emotional Intelligence 2.0 the book. It comes with an online survey code that you can use on their website. But your test might have used a different scale, so... then you might be alright.

    Wonderful simplification of a topic that I would have shredded into a chaotic 2 hour redundancy filled talk. I find it interesting that basically you are describing here (during your treatment of empathy) more than empathy itself but what Tibetans call, Bodhichitta (awaking one's own emotions to the suffering of others as well as 'self'). Then you go an additional step and explain how possessing such emotional sensitivity is helpful in all aspects of life. I am impressed that this can be done, in English, so rapidly. Good job on a very practical, yet quite deep video.

    Well ... EQ is important because .... well emotions are information. Whenever you are trying to resolve a math problem and it doesn't work anything ... if you take a break , and get your emotions in check then ... something clicks , you get inspiration . Inspiration is what it sounds ... someone else in this universe is doing the thinking .... and you just get a piece of the information from nowhere . It sounds strange but ... really people who meditate in Asia get this fact very easily . When you rationalize ... you think with your head instead of getting information from somewhere else . Life is a game ... and someone does the thinking while others reap the rewards . It always was like this . We live in a Matrix where this stuff happens all the time . Like in the movie the Matrix . Why do I say emotions are information ? Well any sort of energy is information . When something changes like you move an object from A to B for example .... the information changes about that object ( the object is no longer in the same coordinates ) as well as it was done with kinetic energy . When you put a piece of paper in the fire, the paper burns generating heat, the information about that piece of paper also changes , it is no longer a piece of paper it is ashes . With time those ashes also oxidize ... and that is done with a very small amount of energy . The bigger the energy ... the bigger the information . The better you feel ... the more productive you can be . And it is also tied with your sexual impulses . Those who know this thing ... are more soft when talking, they are better listeners . Actually EQ and kindness are almost the same thing . I say almost because I am not 100 percent sure . But we do live in a matrix based on our sexual impuses .... and those who don't look at women as sexual objects are really winners of the game ... in many ways . A basic look at the game, how it works between people is the Karpman_drama_triangle . A third person always watches the conflict between two people . Do a search on that on google and you will see what I am talking about !!

    • @don77frye
      @don77frye 10 років тому +2

      There was also a book - enlightened garnder ... a very good book , who also says that information in your head comes with emotion . I'd have to say that everything that sourounds us is potential energy source and energy and information is the same thing !!

    Interesting strategy to warp EQ through the Big 5. My EQ is only around 120 (90th percentile) but my IQ is 30 points higher (99.9th percentile+). You failed to mention the most important part. Having a high EQ doesn't mean you're nice. It means you know exactly what you're doing when you choose not to be, and how. It doesn't mean you don't experience anger, it means you understand how your anger impacts your decision-making process well enough to nullify any influences it would have. When you are filled with rage and you use it to organize a movement built on propaganda to mobilize the masses against your enemies, then you probably have a high EQ and IQ.

    I think IQ is just as important as EQ. Actually it depends on the nature of the job. Some jobs require high intellectual skills like scientists require high IQ and high EQ (persistence, collaboration, deep passion). It's easier to increase EQ than IQ. So it's good news for people with average IQ to succeed in life,by increasing their EQ. HIgh EQ people are likeable, which gives a solid foundation for influence ( leadership ). Basically high EQ people succeed by collaborating with others, motivating others, leverage their IQ with genie's IQ to accomplish a common goal.

    I dont believe the part about assertiveness and confidence being related to high eq. I've had encounters with a handful of full blows psychopaths and all were very assertive and confident 2 are in jail for life for murder, 1 raped my niece and 1 I caught having sex with her sons friend. My mom on the other hand is the sweetest thing anyone can ever encounter and comes from a family of extremely successful high achievers and has more eq then anyone ive ever encountered. She's also the least assertive person on this planet and lacks confidence at times

      Yes, it's interesting that there are exceptions like this. One can certainly be confident yet callous or unaware or just a selfish asshole. Confidence and insecurity can also be developed situationally.

      I like your e.g. Cody Williams... It seems to me that any action that leads to negative emotions later on a lot of the time reflects a lack of EQ because high EQ means you know what action is appropriate for your well being and others. Therefore a doctor sitting on a bus may not be afraid to stand up and help a man who has collapsed with chest pain. The doctor is highly assertive. On the other hand, a man who acts on a sexual impulse to do something that is against the law understands that physical pleasure makes him feel good for a few seconds or minutes, but doesn't realise that 1) there will be other consequences to his actions and 2) that these consequences will cause him prolonged negative emotions and unhappiness.

    Leo I didn't found a more suitable video to ask you. I'm by far more sensitive than most men, and when I start feeling emotions I lose all my coldness and reason. For example: I met a woman, we had nothing in common, but with her I have had the most wonderful sex in my life, better than I ever imagined. Then I realized she is promised, but I'm already in love with her. Dont wanna forget her or what happened. I just want to stop suffering for falling in love so easily.

      Dude, that's normal. If you have sex with the hottest girl in your life, of course you'll get butt-hurt if she ditches you. It's hard to burn that out of your system unless you've had sex with dozens of girls like her. That's really the only way to remove that. You need to create more options with girls.

    hi Leo. i have a friend. she does really bad at emotional controlling. she knows very well what if she did as the way of being controlled by her anger or depression, but she still keeps on. she thinks it will make her satisfied and sometimes even happy, because she is making a revenge. if someone makes her unhappy, she will make him or her sad, even if she will be unhappy as well. i really want to help her. i am wondering why some people will do somethings even if they know it do harm to themselves.

    A recent analysis by Adam Chudhurski (2013) shows that without time constraints , the correlation between fluid intelligence and working memory capacity are largely reduced, and performance on fluid tasks becomes dependent on long-term memory; retrieval fluency, associative memory, and relational learning. Because Europeans emphasize speed and linearity in thought , they score higher on Raven's tests , however, without time any practical time limit (inter-day measures) a small percentage of individuals would do very well, at least through certain periods in development, in rarer cases exceeding between 1 to 2 standard deviations above there timed scores. This phenomena has been noted by high IQ (technically, high IEQ) societies. Conventional IQ tests are very carefully designed to be biased against certain minority groups. Currently many theorists of dual processing emphasize the importance of perception and associative-heuristic processes. Even the those who tend to downplay the role of perception on intelligence, like Johnathan Evans , acknowledge it's relevance to inductive thinking (feature-based induction). What IQ proponents have long taken for granted , is essentially, pre-analytic processing that accounts for designing the 'novel set' - which is then analyzed for structure. Tests such as the Raven's which provide relations in A,B,C form, and demand a subject to uncover underlying structure, take for granted , that elements of the set, [A, B, C], have been PROVIDED to the individual, and NOT SELECTED by the individual. In the pre-analytic phase of thought , the associative-heuristic system utilizes low level inductive and statistical based processes, to select elements to form a unique set. For example, [A,B,C]. After the set is structured, analytical thinking becomes relevant in uncovering the structural relationship between the elements (in this case, 1, +1,+1, between A,B,C). There is less argument towards the claim, as IQ proponents make, that a solution to a problem is 'novel', when none of the elements to solve the problem have been selected by the individual. In fact, with IQ tasks, the entire set of elements are spoon-fed to the subject, and the only thing relevant is analysis. (As if the cure for cancer is all jumbled up in one sentence, just waiting for someone to look at). Real world-problem solving requires relating broader concepts in viable permutations, through selective and analytical (IQ) processing. Novelty relates to the 'rarity' of an solution, not any particular process which it may be a result of. And Intelligence is a largely dynamic, developmental quality, that can never be pinned down by any test, especially rigid measures that are conventionally used. Maybe one day, we can infer a person's limitations from elements of structure, but that day has not yet come. For now, achievements (accolades) are usually better indicators of intellectual functioning

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  10 років тому +6

      That's why I've never taken an IQ test. It think it would severely under-rate my intelligence and I don't want that kind of negative evidence holding me back from being as intelligent as I know I am. My intelligence depends a lot of a very high-level intuition. It's difficult to explain to people how I arrive at certain conclusions, but the conclusions come out very accurate. I've never enjoyed math, or puzzles, or logic problems because they seem too unimaginative for my tastes. So much mental processing happens unconsciously.

    Emotional intelligence is also known as EQ. EQ means emotional quotient. The speaker is stressing on the importance of EQ over IQ. EQ is very important than IQ because, after a lot of research in 30 years, it is concluded that EQ is the key for having success and improving performance in business and careers than IQ. Life is mixed with emotions to become successful person which needs emotional intelligence more than IQ. People will assume that EQ is about sociability ,extrovert and being people's person which is not correct. Emotional intelligence is about something that dovetails very nicely with introvert.Definition of emotional intelligence is ability to recognize and understand your emotions in yourself and in others and ability to use this awareness to manage your behaviour and your relationship. EQ has four pillars which are knowing your emotions, controlling your emotions, knowing the others emotion and maintaining good relation with others. First two pillars depend on anger management, honesty, trust, assertiveness, confidence, communication, decision making if your low in any of these that sign that your having low emotional intelligence and negative thinking include in it. The next thing is we link work topics to judge the emotional intelligence which includes presentation, to motivate, to influence and listening skills. If you are not performing well in these things, then you must be having low EQ. We can develop EQ more than IQ. But it is longer process as it may take several weeks or several months to develop any of weak pillars of EQ. Stress can be controlled by meditation. Coaching, reading books can be useful to study your emotions as there are many techniques which help to improve EQ pillars.

    This is what Jordan Peterson, a psychologist, not lke you, says on the subject.
    Answer by Jordan B Peterson, psychology professor at the University of Toronto, clinical psychologist, on Quora:
    There is no such thing as EQ. Let me repeat that: "There is no such thing as EQ." The idea was popularized by a journalist, Daniel Goleman, not a psychologist. You can't just invent a trait. You have to define it and measure it and distinguish it from other traits and use it to predict the important ways that people vary.
    EQ is not a psychometrically valid concept. Insofar as it is anything (which it isn't) it's the Big Five trait agreeableness, although this depends, as it shouldn't, on which EQ measure is being used (they should all measure the same thing ). Agreeable people are compassionate and polite, but they can also be pushovers. Disagreeable people, on average (if they aren't too disagreeable) make better managers, because they are straightforward, don't avoid conflict and cannot be easily manipulated.
    It should also be noted that IQ is five or more times as powerful a predictor as even good personality trait predictors such as conscientiousness. The true relationship between grades, for example, and IQ might be as high as r = .50 or even .60 (accounting for 25-36% of the variance in grades). Conscientiousness, however, probably tops out at around r = .30, and is more typically reported as r = .25 (say, 5 to 9% of the variance in grades). There is nothing that will provide you with a bigger advantage in life than a high IQ. Nothing. To repeat it: NOTHING.
    So yeaah... You don't know what you are talking about. It's sad how you profit with the ignorance of people.

      On average, most "high IQ" ppl aren't THAT much smarter that it makes a real difference. They still need to work with "normal" ppl (even low IQ ones) to be "successful". Therefore they depend on the GROUP IQ, which they benefit from interaction with them. Otherwise they will be replaced by a similar IQ person.
      If you truly have really high IQ, e.g. Nicola Tesla, Isaac Newton, etc., you can become one of the most successful and influential people in history, even as those mentioned never married, and are know to have very little if any social relations...apart from business, like investors and such. ;)

      Well, you can be "stupid" at various academic subjects (particularly difficult ones like math/science) and still be "successful" via being good with people. Think scam artists. ;) In a more normal circumstance, most organized productivity has jobs for various types of ppl. You can train some of the ppl with bad grades and such to do specific jobs really well as a TEAM, where deep profound knowledge is not required. At the same time, you can put an anti-social stuck up nerd in the basement and keep all the computers running where ppl hate him but still need him. lol

    that's the wrongest video of actualised.com i've seen yet. firste of all there is no such a thing called "emotional intelligent", there's no empirical studies or a test or any other way to measure a thing of a bunch of things that can allow us to call them emotional intelligence, like we've done with intelligence, the best name for it is emotional skills or talents, and that's what goleman did, he took a bunch of important emotional skills, like the ability to read others emotions etc.. and concluded that they should be called emotional intelligence!! secondly, there's actually many researches on the differences that EQ makes in jobs, they use a statistal technic called meta-analysis. and the results (schmidt and hunter 1998) were: 7% in jobs that require personal contact (like saling etc), and 0% in jobs that need no "emotional skills"

Maybe it comes naturally for some, but for many you are asking people to basically be liars and that having intelligence isn't important...but in the world of science, it actually is very important to be able to have proper critical thinking skills, etc. Certain areas require IQ to succeed. High IQ is inherent potential. EQ are skills you can develop.
    EQ develops through good nurture or training. IQ is the quality of your nature and is fixed.
    High IQ (being gifted) as a kid means you have different needs than other kids. When you dont meet these needs then you dont develop high EQ.
    So people with high IQ doesnt mean they are not as talented at EQ they just develop it differently than average IQ.
    But our society doesnt meet their needs and focuses on quantity rather than quality. That means it treats every child as if they are average. Its like being a salted water fish and being treated like sweet water fish.
    Thats why people with high IQ as you mention do not usually have high EQ. Their nurture is suited for average IQ children and so their EQ is not developed when they reach adulthood. Likewise average IQ people has better EQ when reaching adulthood cause their nurture was suited for their needs.
    Managers and high ranking employees (which is what is translated as success in society) are average IQ, High EQ. But world leaders, top sucessfull bussinessmen, master craftsmen and artists, revolutionary inventors, important scientists etc. Are all high EQ, High IQ.
    So IQ is how big is your potential and EQ is your tool to reach the maximum of that potential. So no its not one is more important vs the other, its both are important depending on your ambition.

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  10 років тому

      No, IQ is also developed and it has nothing to do with potential outside of the logical type of reasoning that IQ tests. IQ above 140 actually means decreased potential for success. Too high an IQ makes one so cerebral that success outside of math and science becomes difficult. EQ is a better predictor of potential than IQ.

    • @agagagagag6167
      @agagagagag6167 10 років тому

      Actualized.org What you described as good EQ seems to me what a kid who had good parents and growing enviroment would be like.
      See all these nerds who are not able to get their life together? They were lacking something in their nurture and they lack EQ development in adulthood.
      See all these managers and confident people who are good and the socializing and networking game and become high ranking employees? They all had good nurturing and therefore good EQ. Correct me if Im wrong but this is what I understood.
      Also l need you to define success. I defined it as if you can do whatever you like to do in your life sucessfully without having anything to do with the social status it gives you in society. I think you mean success in the "orthodox" way where you climb the ladder of society.
      Its the same thing. If you have high IQ (and high EQ) and your goal is the society ladder then you will do better than someone who has average IQ in that area.
      Difference is that high IQ has fixed ideas and interests that you cannot change with "normal" education and so there are less % high IQ people having this goal. In that sense yes high IQ becomes a hidrance.
      However my point is that you can have high IQ and high EQ. Its just that gifted children need a different enviroment that is not given to them and they are treated like average (and also punished that they are not acting like average). That for them means poor nurture and therefore low EQ growth.

      Agaga Gagag Not quite so. You are taking introversion to mean low EQ. I have high EQ but I'm also introverted so I have no interest in making lots of friends or climbing a corporate ladder. I love nerdy, solitary activities. I had a healthy childhood and I can understand and read people's emotions very well.
      IQ can also be changed. IQ is a really poor metric, IMO. The way it's measured it tests a very specific kind of logical reasoning which of course you can train yourself to be better at.

      Actualized.org No I didnt mean introverted I meant socially akward and unconfident. Its not the same thing. What you describe in your video as good EQ is the opposite of socially akward and unconfident. You can be introverted and still be able to meet the social demands of society that you need to have success within it.
      By nerd I meant the classic manchild that lives in his mother basment with no abilities to succeed. Maybe nerd wasnt the correct word. But you cant tell me this guy hasnt got low EQ. And these people are the results of poor nurture.
      As for IQ I never really searched if it is fixed so you might be right. But I never heard of anyone with average IQ reach "gifted" status. IQ measures your reasoning and critical thinking and your ability to think out-of-the-box. Thats the very definition of intelligence.

      Agaga Gagag Socially awkward and unconfident doesn't mean the person can't be successful. Many of the best scientists and mathematicians are hardcore nerds. Take a look at someone like Isaac Newton, etc. Nerds have so much power in the 21st century. You can rule the world from behind a computer screen!!
      But, yes, of course EQ helps and is a great thing to work on. EQ is correlated with success.

      Redditor If I would have low EQ why would I even care about bonds or real relationships when I can't control my self.
      I would eventually stop on caring of others and I have the brains to do stuff alone anyway, thanks to my IQ.
      So does relationships really matter?

      people with high iq's like that and low eq usually end up as complete messes, think of the nerd who locks himself in a room to make a nuclear reactor and can't related to anyone and is out of this world socially awkward
