    There are few videos that show a hip roof install as well as this but then this was missing your particular insights on the install of shingles such as architectural/laminated style shingles on such a pyramidal hip roof. I'm trying to gain wisdom tips insight into the best way to do it, for looks /efficiency / best practices/ avoid issues

    Nice vid for sure. I went with GAF ice and water shield for my 1200 sq ft home here in SE AZ. GAF tends to recommend putting their product right over the drip edge. That would not work so well for me here so I am thinking that extra edge narrow piece of ice and water peel and stick might be a good option to put over my drip edge. I will be putting on a galvalumne roof. What do you think? Thanks.

    Put drip edge on first then ice and water, eliminate the small strip of ice and water, water will never back up under the drip in that area

      This is actually a good comment. For several years this has been discussed and researched in the building science world. Many people, still today, do it with drip edge first on the eaves. This is for ease and speed, and just because it's how they have always done it. Research has actually proven that the bond between the adhesive backed ice and water and the aluminum is not strong enough to stop the penetration of water. This is especially true where you have lots of wind driven rain(here in NC) and ice dams. The extra strip was done as exactly that, extra. We typically donnot install that and just bring the first layer of underlayment on top of the drip for any rain that comes before we shingle. Now, on the rakes, we do not put underlayment over drip, we put it below just like ice and water, to stop any wind drive rain from making it's way to the framing. Thanks for the comment and for watching!!

      Agreed, I live in Ontario Canada and have been doing it this way for over 45 years and never had a problem with water backing up under the ice shield by the drip edge, however I wouldn’t put my drip over any underlayment going up the rake edge ever incase of any wind blown rain

      @@remodelingamerica7202 Great video and lots of good points. I don't understand why the roofing industry does not have a 4" or 6" self adhesive flashing product. All of the normal flashing is for windows and doors, and specifically calls out "not for roofing" (see FortiFlash), even though it seems to be the same product, and has clear uses like you have found here. Why not sell at least a 6" wide x 75 ft option of the Ice and Water product?

    The volume on my system is not allowing me to hear your words. I have a headset and can hear some words. Wish I would hear more about this product. I am about to buy underlayment for a 19 x 12 foot section of my roof. First time I've ever tried roofing.

    Would you use this Ice and Water product to cover the "crest" or top of the roof below the top tile? I can't find an answer to what product I should protect this area with.

    what happens when you need to redo your roof in 40 years? Can and should this be peeled off or just reapplied over it? I feel like it will rip part of the OSB off. Is this good in Florida under a metal roof? How about under solar shingles?
    side question but if I'm looking to build a 2 story house with single flat roof and want the minimum number of holes in the roof, is metal the way to go? If am planning a solar roof that will use strips, can the strips be Cellular PVC and be screwed (instead of nailed) all the way through to the rafters?

    Do u use same nails for drip edge as the shingles? Does the drip edge go under or over the ice and water on the rake edges?

    • @LLCoolPass
      @LLCoolPass 2 роки тому

      Same nail type.
      D.e. goes under on rakes. Over on eves.

    This seems like overkill for that tiny roof that's doesn't have a long enough slope to see accumulated rain. Tbh with the tie-offs, use of expensive underlayment products everywhere, and the fact this property looks like it's a mansion on 3 acres...y'all look like an expensive contractor to hire

    • @remodelingamerica7202
      @remodelingamerica7202  4 роки тому +1

      Haha, Interesting observation. They are some of the more expensive, and hard to install but all work great. We since have switched to platinum products for their ease of install, and no longer do the added strip on the drip edge. The homeowner just wanted an "airtight" roof, so we gave it to him, old man... lol
