Here in blistering AZ synthetic felt is not holding up compared to tar paper.

I have used 30lb. tar paper and it has performed great. In our area synthetics have run 3 times the cost of 30lb. tar paper.

Where do you get the 30 pound organic felt underlayment these days? I would question if it is indeed 30 pound or is it number 30? There is a big difference!

That's what I'm thinking of using. Synthetic being made of plastic seems like it would break down in time with heat.

Finally, someone who really knows and is not afraid to tell it like it is. Synthetic underlayment is not waterproof if you use it.

I did my own in plain galvalume on a tight budget. It was harder to work with the building department than the job itself. Shingles suck. Never again. Did I say shingles suck?

Wouldn't it be best in the long run if the metal panel had a coating on its underside ?

Using a machine caliper for checking thicknesses is absurd and the roof is supposed to keep your roof dry not your underlayment secondly lack of permeability on these Is hard on the decking there been numerous problems with synthetic underlayment nails weeping and degradation of roof decking especially if every roof bay is not vented I would use 30 lb certified roofing felt certified d226 type 2 you can also double up on it depending on your location I find they like to use this product one easy to walk on secondly if the do horse crap job of installing your roof they have the underlayment to fall back on eventually it will become a problem a delayed time before you recognize the leak decking damage not to be very truthful not sure how this may apply to metal roofing but again the certified organic felt paper will not cook your decking and or hide leaks if they occur providing knowledge of that leak far sooner hence allowing early intervention to limit damage

What is the reason a building code would not allow synthetic underlayment?

What's a good underlayment for the hot and dry Arizona concrete tile roof 4:12 pitch that requires a double layer and no ice & water shield, 115 wind?
All the contractors here are recommending G-40 or TU-43 SBS modified underlayment for tile roofs. Some of them say synthetics are great for the colder climate shingle roof but they would never install it on a tile roof in AZ.

Mickey, my company specializes in metal roofing so I don't have the expertise to give you the correct advice.

G40, TU 43 or Malarkey 40# are great options.

@@JuanElBautista89 thanks for your reply. I already purchased TU35 as that was the only option i could find in my area after two months of hunting for supplies (big supply shortage).
We'll go with a double layer of TU35 plus regular wood battens because i couldn't find the elevated ones.

I’m in Los Angeles and my contractor is about to install 30# felt. Should I ask for synthetic?

No. 30# is thick, heavy and time tested. It will last as long as the shingles. @@jeffthielke8091

@@jeffthielke8091 Alot of roofers here in Phoenix, AZ are switching back to 30lb felt. They say it is helping the roof decking last longer as it "breathes" better.
