Rich info...I bought an old o64 sthil chainsaw and borrowed it to a friend. Got it back piston needed changing... replaced jt and that piston didn't last for 3 days. Took it to another guy said piston is gone.... asked me to make sure I got a piston with nakasil. Nonetheless I'm out for knowledge on these and after watching your video I'm quite confident I can tackle this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
each time you show me new valuable information for my own build! during this series i learned a lot why i damaged moped cylinders by porting them and didn't a proper chamfer when i was young. Now i can do my chainsaw properly by what i learned on this chanel!

Another great video! One thing to add maybe is the ring end gap in the cylinder, if too loose what that looks like, or a few more ring wear tips and comments also. I know this is more about porting break in - but you thoughts on ring wear, and when to buy a new ring, or even how far a piston can be scored before you can't clean it up would be great. Some old saws you can't get parts easy, or they cost so much, so reusing and cleaning up the old cylinder and piston, even if scored, and just putting a ring in might save the saw, if you like the old saw ... also, if something has been run with a crappy air filter, and sucked a bunch of dirt and dust in, what that wear looks like. Again, thanks!
I can’t wait until it’s broken in. I like the simplicity and old school approach that Echo takes. Separate on/off and choke controls. Non -stratified engines(in chainsaws anyway), and quad port design. They are very utilitarian and easy to start with lots of torque but don’t expect to win any races. I think it will run well just that it won’t outperform the mighty 266SE.

Hello Tinman, I have ported 3 saws so far with your tutorial. They all are very nice. The latest saw I have done is a 80cc dolmar (cc116). It was kind of a slow saw (7000rpm in the cut) now it is much faster (about 9500rpm in the cut). I tell you, all of my saws have experienced massive gains. I am very greatful that you do these videos. I just wanted to thank you for your help again. I have learned a lot from you and could already help other with my knowledge. (Funfact: I am 19 years old and I live in Germany)

Good morning,I just put together a kit saw,watched a bunch of videos.Guess what they all did or did not do.They all either got in the way of critical assembly ie..hands in the way or whole body lol and say "that's how ya do it".Bottom line...dont't forget the details no matter how small thank you for your time.
Tinman, @ 7:00-7:15+ minutes, This is what my first old 075 piston looks like. Some pretty healthy scoring and some lighter scratches on the skirts. The cylinder had some light aluminum transfer and slight scratching. But the largest scratch area on the piston and cylinder seems to line up with a small hole in the side of the wall up by the dome. There is a screw that threads into the side of the jug but there is a hole inside the cylinder in line with it. The Compression release is not there, but a screw in plug on top of the jug. I am curious to try to reuse the cylinder. Pretty sure the piston is shot, but who knows.

I'm pretty sure I heard you mention somewhere in these videos that your average work week is about 60 hours. I have a vague idea about the amount of time it takes to edit videos. Just picked up a Husqvarna 272, looking forward to going through it timing it, porting it. Has a brand new highways piston and cylinder, so we will see how she goes😆 Thanks for all you're knowledge
I am really getting alot out of this series. I've gone and ordered a bunch of tools to learn how to do this work and I am grabbing any saws I can get my hands on to play with and learn on.

That's what I love most about doing my own work- I'm the same way. Everything takes me longer than it would to take it in to a shop or have someone else do it but I much prefer to make sure it's done clean, done right and I know exactly what went into it. Its satisfying. 😄

I've always been real easy on saws after putting them together. I usually run it blipping the throttle randomly until I feel it get warm. Shut her down and let her cool completely. Then do it again but a little longer. Do that 3 or 4 times and then run it in wood with it extra rich for a couple tanks

GREAT video Tinman!! I missed this & p. 14 my first couple times around...or just felt an Echo didn't really need them ROFL....but w/ my chinesium pair of 660's, one's new top-end having ~5 tanks and the other still on tank#1, these last two parts are golden!! Lemme ask-- How risky do you consider it to go and actually remove, then re-install(new Motoseal, basically) the cylinder, so you can inspect the entire piston? Seems the bottom portion of the skirts are critical to the assessment but, sadly, you aren't seeing those w/o removing the jug...am tempted to do so on one of my builds, the one still on tank #1, because of an oddity wherein I seated my finished cylinder in Motoseal and the damn piston was rubbing the cylinder as soon as it past the exhaust port!! Hadn't done that once during testing & working of the top-end, and I wasn't able to replicate it when I re-Moto'd it the following morning (which is the current build), very weird but it's the only thing stopping me from actually opening up and looking at the entire piston. What, specifically, do you think is most important during break-in? I see the rings' seating as a critical portion, but - beyond that - all I can think of is slight carbon&oil buildups blocking any minute leakages and just 'smoothing out' roughness (which is, I'm guessing, why a saw only really needs a couple/several tanks' worth of babying, yet still continues getting stronger for another half dozen+ tanks!)
Asked stihl dealer break in. They told me run it. First tank no more than half throttle. Step throttle speed up next tank. After 3rd tank let it eat. I like way you do break in. Just like with a general break in a new vechical . Step it up as get time in it.
Once I idle anr blip the throttle for a tank or so to heat cycle it I put it in wood fat and let it eat. I'm never an advocate of 1/2 throttle cutting as the flywheel spins at 1/2 speed and the saw could get hot from lack of air from the slow moving flywheel.
Where do you get your parts for Echo I need a spring that latch’s air cleaner lid one of the springs is stretched a little needs to latch a little tighter ?

Not that I plan on taking on a porting project I find this information useful for regular maintenance.
Detonation from cheap gas will cock the piston upon firing and scuff the piston skirts also

I have a really ratty 800p in a box, I'd like to find a better one to build on the channel. This 670 is a very nice saw ported I will say.

yup seen heat failure many times from faulty fuel tank vents. had one fail on my husky 55 and ended up boiling fuel

Interesting seeing the rings only partially broken in. Looks like its on track to be a strong saw.

That Echo looks a little bigger than my little baby. I have a CS3000 Top Handle.
I was going to tear into a saw to practice on. But it's a clammy lol. So I'm hoping my old poulan will work! I've got to many projects 😂

Your piston can look like that from muffler modding and not getting all the metal out too. Just throwing that out there
