How to port a chainsaw part 2: Timing your cylinder (echo CS-670)

over the last year, in prepeartion for taking on my new interest in chainsaws and porting, i've bought approximately 15 saws, an ultrasonic cleaner, a compression tester, a mightyvac pressure/vacuum tester, a foredom flex shaft, a timing wheel, and a few other things. I haven't done my first port job yet, but I am taking in all of your training. i am extremely confident I will be able to make nice work saws after i finish all of your training. it all makes perfect sense. i love how you explain things. you truly are a great teacher. i originally intended to port 4-5 of the saws and leave the rest stock, but you said it is addictive to port saws. i can already see that coming!! thank you, sincerely

Tinman, break the rest of that plastic off the T-handle and weld a piece of round stock to it. Works for me and saves me a trip. Love watchin your tutorial. Thank you for sharing with the community

Good day all. A little trick I’ve learnt to fix those stripped holes in plastic. Is to place a piece of weed wacker string long ways into the hole then the fastener. I hope this helps someone🙂
Also . To not strip them .....turn screw backwards until you feel it drop into the threads. Then turn forward . 👍
Thats what I do as well
I’ve used aluminum foil, but I bet trimmer line is better for plastic. It would certainly be easier.
Small section of an appropriate sized zip tie also works a charm….

This is so good. Always start with the basics, just like you're doing, (timing wheel,etc), and take ones time, measure twice,three times, and cut once....

Man, perfect timing... Night before I saw this I was doing the ring trick for the transfers, but was not sure I had it right. This helped quite a lot. I'm following this like crazy. THANKS!
Time for me to buy a timing wheel. I put a dual port muffler on our stihl 461 and tuned it with the help of your tuning video. Definitely a difference! Thanks for your help man, this is great stuff!

Great intro. I started the cs-680 the same way. I got it running today as picked up. It was missing the clutch, so I will be shocked if I don’t find an oiler issue or maybe an air leak. It will take more investigation before I tear it down. The crank end was good, and there’s no play but I can’t believe it was abandoned just because of a $45 clutch.
Tinman I crimped an alligator clip to a piece of tie wire. Then you can clip it to a fin. It works on everything I've timed.
I didn't mean to be so coarse in my first comment on the 461. I apologize. I really need to know how to deck a saw & time it right. I port a bit of the transfers, exhaust from the piston out & intake to the piston. I've also got some prototype air cleaners for a 461 & just those adjustments have made it the hottest saw I've ever ran in 20 years of climbing & cutting trees. Once I learn this timing & decking stuff I'm gonna be unstoppable. Also did these things to my 372xp x-torq & its a banty rooster. I love every bit of this slow shit. I must be slow🤤 42 & still climbing... but I love it & chainsaws just as much as you do. Thank you.

Hey guys, how's everybody doing? Greetings from the mountains of East Tennessee. Listen, I have a cs4600 45cc saw that looks like a smaller version of this cs670. First off I love the design of this cylinder, especially for a saw designed in the '80s. But a ferrous metal ring is pressed into the intake port, which the rubber intake boot slips over. I have no doubt that the designers in Japan didn't press this metal ring into the cylinder head for shits and giggles. Although I do see evidence of enough overengineering to make the Germans blush I can't quite see the purpose of this ring. I was thinking it serves as a heatsink perhaps to lower emissions but I don't think they worried too much about such things back in the 80s. Does anyone have a clue as to why they did this? Love the channel and the enormous depository of valuable information it has become. I've been an A&P aircraft mechanic since 1990 for whatever that's worth.
I’ll admit I may of been 1 of those impatient ppl that couldn’t wait to port there saw lol!! 😬But luckily it all worked out😅

This series was incredible. I'm not mechanically inclined to tackle these upgrades just yet. I've successfully rebuilt an older Stihl top end, but that timing wheel has me nervous
Yeah, this one was pretty intimidating. I know it's probably super simple to figure out when you do it a couple times, but I've watched it twice and still aren't fully understanding.

Bondus “T” handle Allen SAE, Metric and torx are the best. They have rubber coated all steel handles

The timing wheel on the camera v your eye is called parallax. It comes into play in shooting and surveying.
hey tin man drill a hole in a sacrificial piston or cut the piston in a pie shape and stick a small camera in there to see your transfer on the inside weve done it and it works

Tinman, I believe I have a rival for how dirty your echo was. I am close by if your interested in seeing it just for laughs. I’m going to tinker with is see if I can make it work. First pull rope broke, haven’t hardly looked at it since.
I just bought a 660 and a husky 550xp. They both seem great out of the box but id love to have them both ported. I just got them both 2 weeks ago and they dont have 2 hours on either of them yet. Id hate to ruin either of them but im wanting them to run like ones i see on UA-cam

Thanks Tinman! Sure would be nice to have a collet setup on the timing wheel. 3 jaw jacobs chuck is ~.003" run out on a good day. Do you find that a 3/8 chuck will handle most crank shafts? I learned to not use rosin core solder too. Puts a some junk in the cylinder. Waiting with bated breath for the next episode!
I’ll be porting my poulan wild thing I just replaced carb and fuel lines on. If that goes well. I’ll port my clone 660. I cut big oak here in Florida and it would help speed up jobs. Thanks bud

Hey Tim man if I delete the gasket off the cylinder head and check the squish will I’ll have to re adjust the carburetor in rich or lean ? Or should I just warm the Saw up and run it a few minutes and do a plug check ? Any help would be greatly appreciate it thanks buddy
Hey Tinman. I use a drill chuck like yours and i found that using vacuum caps meant for cars helps hold the drill chuck tighter if you put one over the threads. It also helps insure you wont mess the threads up to. i forget the actual size sitting here but i all buy is the small assortment pack.

@@tinmanssaws They make a couple style caps. the colored caps seem to be a little thinner. I use those because of that.
Almost looks like you could put a husky 56mm 395 XP cylinder on that echo With some work . When I get a motor that's dirty like that I use purple cleaner with some dawn in a spray bottle and clean the heck out of it & then with the garden hose & spray it off with air & WD 40. I like your degree will set up.
tinman, does it matter when timing your transfers with a ring which way you turn the timing wheel when piston is at BDC? And in general, when finding the timing numbers, does it matter which way you turn the wheel?
