The transition straight from cutscene to gameplay is pretty impressive, too. I mean, I know the backgrounds are just 2D images so they just rendered the 3D models in front of the last frame of the cutscene, but still, it works so well.
Damn, it must mean something that in the original opening Aeris looks forward and proceeds with calm, and in the remake she looks BACK and moves forward with caution...
Mostly just a changing of her character in general over the years. She's one of those characters that the original version of her in the original release just... isn't how people think of her. And that was reflected in the Remake. Sad as it sounds dying was the best thing that could have happened to her as it drastically altered everyone's perceptions of her.
This is one of the best game openings ever made. The transition from Aerith to Midgar was a perfect window for the player to get be introduced to the game world. It's like you're following her through a dark tunnel and she opens a door to a strange new land and you fly through it. The Assassin's Creed-ish eagle part they added kind of detracted from that. Edit: Looks like the devs agree, and they cut that shot out of the demo.
I never ever played any FF and saw the remake first. Respect for you guys that played this game and were amazed by it. I wanna like it but damn, the remake did work cuz this understandably ages really bad. (ps: I aint got no nostalgia goggles so excuse my rudeness to this op)
Oh my God, the Final Fantasy VII opening from the Remake looks gorgeous but the original is epic too. It gave you the feeling that you're ready for an incredible adventure. Oh man, I love this game.
See, had anyone actually PLAYED Final Fantasy VII, they would have known the Smash Bros. reveal was for Cloud IMMEDIATELY when the starry background showed up.
+Rubberman202 As soon as I heard the sound of the train 0.5 seconds in I jumped off my chair. "New Trailer Approaching" + The train sound from the opening = Cloud in smash
This does in 2 minutes and a half what your average modern game takes 10 hours of on-rails 'gameplay' to do. XIII lifts this off almost frame by frame and then scrambles its bits around but achieves none of its effect.
It absolutely is. It starts with a familiar starry sky and a familiar setting but becomes stranger and stranger things come into view as the camera zooms out revealing a strange new world to you. Aerith should have been the gateway character to walk you into this world from the darkness opening its grand gates. What's the point of the zoom out shot if you're going to have a bird fly and showing the day-to-day life of the Midgar residents first?
I can't stop myself from being so emotional... it's already been over 20 years! I clearly remember the amazement I lived when I saw this intro for the first time.
Man!!! I just started the remake on the PS5 and as I went through this scene and was like "I remember that but there was something different about it!" Wow!
Anyone ever notice how the first shot of the game is also directly mirrored by the final shot [post-credits Red13 scene not included]? I never hear anyone talk about that
The intro to this game truly presented an ambience that we were stepping into another world. A world where you control the characters and determine their actions. Even their names.
The very first scene of showing the universe, the stars, even for as long as one minute, is in my opinion what already separates FF VII from all other Final Fantasy series. It's seriously perhaps the only Final Fantasy game that gave me such an existential dread, asking deeper questions like meaning of life, etc etc. Final Fantasy VII is actually a very existential game. It's a lot much deeper than most people even think. Such a very rare masterpiece!
I don't have a PS4/5 or Gaming PC. So the only way i had to discover FFVII is to play the original on my Old PSP, which can run PS1 games... This game is amazing I started gaming on Xbox one
I heard in an interview that the Shinra execs think that a remake would be too costly, so they'd rather throw out less thoughtful nonsensical sequels than an amazing remake that would be a surefire hit.
So I’ve just finished FF7 for the first time, and something about the game really struck me. The last shot of the game, as well as the first shot, are both Aeris surrounded by the lifestream. Is there a possibility that Aeris foresaw most/all of the events of FF7 from the very beginning of the game?
Although the remake is graphically more impressive and more complete. It lacks the WOW factor of the original. For those of us who grew up on Final Fantasy back then and first saw this jump from 16 bit Final Fantasy into CD Final Fantasy there's no contest. Booting up that disk demo from a magazine and seeing this was something else.
When you realized that Aerith is the "promised land" Shinra's been looking for the whole time after finishing the game. It's heavily implied that it's the lifestream and the planet whole along, and Aerith, as a cetra, is now one with the planet. That's why the OG FF7 first and last thing we see is Aerith, the true hero.
I keep watching this and asking myself if it really is better than the remake original or if it's just nostalgias goggles. It's really better. The alley is pitch black and the city looks dark and ominous. This opening has a sense of dread and anticipation that the new one does not. And the way the hopeful music rises and contrasts with the dark city and then some how coalesces with it--perfection. The new looks visually better, obviously, but it lacks all the darker/creepier tones.
I really, really hope they remake Final Fantasy VII! I can guarantee that if they remake the entire video game exclusively for PS3, it would probably bring them more money than they'd ever dream of getting from any one game. The old FF VII is hard to come by these days, it'd be amazing if they'd remake it for the new generation, and the old.
