    When changing duplex:
You can select all you want to change
    Right click and click properties
Check the box next to duplex
    Modify value and hit OK.
    Save a ton of time!

Hey Josh, there is a way to change settings on multiple memory slots all at once. Use Shift-Click to select multiple sequential memory slots or Ctrl-Click to select non-sequential slots. Then right-click on one of the selected slots and choose Properties. This will allow you to change any of the settings for all of those selected. For example, you can select all your NOAA stations and enable Skip and set Duplex off. Thanks for all you do for the Ham community!

Should be pinned at top, since he couldn't figure this out or get over the slowing down to click them all individually. I just clicked well over 1oo times to change the settings. was fed up, thought about it, tried a few things, and came back to comment if it wasn't already well known. Cheers!

I've been a Ham for 20 years (never thought I'd own a Baofeng, but bought it to teach), and programmed a lot of radios, both by hand and by computer. This is without a doubt the best instructional video I've ever used, enough so that I was able to make changes on the fly.

Hey, Josh! From 1961-1965, I was a Radioman on a Destroyer for the USN. During that time, I served off the coast of Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Japan, Hong Kong, and various other places. My job (well, I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you) was mostly CW work, spending lots of long hours deployed doing everything from coastal weapons intervention to submarine patrol, and work with our firepower. I ended my service as an E-5 Petty Officer. Since 1965, I've thought very little about communication over distance, although I still have CW rattling around in my head. Recently, I became the Staff Photographer for the local NICA league (Kids, mountain bikes and races). In that capacity, I'm all over the race course. I'm also a certified First Aid/CPR/AED guy, because I teach T'ai Chi at three YMCA's. Long story short, as a rover all over a significant distance, it made sense to plug into the comm network in case i was needed (Yes, we have an attending ambulance and staff). I've re-kindled my fascination for electronic communication, and am starting with a UV5R. I've got the radio, am tuned into some local service frequencies, and will copy the frequencies at the races. I'm not transmitting, as I'm just studying for the Technician ticket, and don't want to be part of a problem. JUST writing this to say that your videos are well-constructed, clearly rendered, and appropriately directed as to talent levels. I've subscribed, and expect to learn lots with your videos. Thanks for your work.

Hi Don! Thanks for the great comment. I enjoyed reading it!
I’m glad you’re getting in radio. It’s a very broad hobby with lots of interesting niches. CW is still quite popular due to its efficiency.
      Lots of luck!

If you program in all your public works, police, fire ,etc, then when you have them all in, highlight them all, right click them, hit properties, check the box for duplex, and set it to off. That will set all of them at once so you aren't clicking for a half hour. Made it half way through mine when I figured it out.

I was just playing with the CHIRP software, and was doing some of the editing duplex like you suggested, you can highlight multiple rows with the normal selection methods CTRL+L-click, shift + L-click, etc. then do a right click and select properties and the select the option to edit, drop down box, option... you'll see
    Save you all those clicks

You weren't kidding about needing to light some candles and open up some wine before sitting down to program your radio!! Your suggestion was spot on about allowing CHIRP to run through the security settings, but now the radio won't respond to CHIRP"s cloning request. I thought I purchased the OG programming cable, but apparently, I must have overpaid for a counterfeit. Even with downloading a new driver, the radio won't respond. This is gonna be a fun (ergo, long) night!! Good thing we are quarantined!! lol

Finally got my Baofeng F8 programmed with the help of this video. I did have issues like probably taking about 7-8 times of plugging in the Chirp cable in before it work. The first couple times, I might not have pushed hard enough in with the cable on the radio side. Then trying to figure out which of the USB connections was the right one. Then watching this video on my iPad mini made it hard to pick up on some of the details. The download from my radio must have worked cuz there were only two channels showing but then when I went to upload the chirp file the the download link was grayed out anyway I was able to work through this and figure things out. Anyway about 2 hours later the radio was programmed. So far I’ve only heard the weather info on the radio 73 channels downloaded.

      Christi’s husband,
Hey, my friend! Please disregard me if I’m wrong,
but If I recall from deep in my obscure memory banks, somewhere, on another channel, various people were running down others who
were not passing their Technician test on the first pass. Your wife (or another Christi) spoke up, defending
those unable to pass the first
time. She really let ‘em have it, too! And she was quite correct in doing so. Christi
cited learning disabilities, and and brain injuries among reasons first timers may need a do-over. She said instead of calling them lazy and unmotivated, others should be praying for everyone’s best outcomes.
Her story was quite motivating. If that is your Christi, Sir, you caught yourself a good one👍🏼👍🏼

    Bought my first Boafeng !!!
Online. 5 days ago. Amazon France; Switzerland is too small, we don't have our "own Amazon".
Baofeng was to be delivered this morning.
Instead I got a letter from customs: "The device you have ordered does not comply with Swiss regulations. Its use and importation into Switzerland is prohibited. The device has been confiscated by customs."
    So much for that ....

    Yo!
Learned a lot from your video.
Instead of individually turning each channel's duplex to 'Off', You can do this instead:
Use 'Shift' or 'Ctrl' to highlight multiple channels
Right click on any highlighted channel, go to Properties
    Hit the Checkbox for 'Duplex'
    Change to Off, Hit OK
Saves a few minutes of clicking!

WAAAAAAAAAKKKK! i am SO with you on this!
i just got a gt-5r ('legal'? version of uv-5r) and it took a half hour to figure how to turn it on.
i'm used to squelch and frequency knobs. 'on/off' to me is a push button. there are 24 buttons counting the one to release the battery.
      makes my head hurt.
and did baofeng not include the cord to keep the price down on the basic unit? whatever. i bit the bullet and got one off amazon.
some radios increase watts out by using a greater amp hour battery. will a 3800maH battery
      do that? i will investigate.
i was gifted an amazon tablet last christmas. it took me 2 days to figure how to turn it on.
no knobs and the on/off button had to be held down for 3-4 seconds to do it's job. no instant on/off. came with NO instructions.

I have two Baofeng GT-3s. Was pulling my hair out trying to program them until I discovered CHIRP. Two things I've noted. First, CHIRP does not always automatically recognize the COM port the radio is connected to, so you may have to manually select the COM port through trial and error. Second, you may have to set CHIRP to a different radio than your model in order to get the radio to properly import and export. Other than those minor glitches, it's a great tool for programming these radios.

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  4 роки тому

It’s not a glitch, you have to provide the serial port. Just being up your device manager and then plug in the cable. The new cable in device manager is what you should point CHIRP too.
Further, the radio types also aren’t chirps fault. It’s the all the cloned baofengs that are internally identical.

Great video Josh! I used it to program a Baofeng GT-3WP this evening. Worked like a charm.

Thanks Josh, Having never used 2m/70cm before this was a great video to explain not the "how to program" but the "what to program" ie just the call channels and repeaters. I have a new AT878 that needs filling up. If you want to QSY to a clear frequency from the call channel, you just dial it up, you don't need to programs loads of simplex channels. Here in VK I don't think we have all that many repeaters so I could program a few simplex frequencies anyway.

You can update more than one row by selecting all frequencies you want to change (select multiple by holding either ctrl or shift) and then right click and select properties. Then check the box you want to update and select the option followed by OK.

For turning off the transmit on the weather and other stations.. You can click on the top one, hold the Shift key, click on the bottom on, all between will be highlighted, right click on one of them, Properties, click the checkbox beside Duplex, select what you want in the drop-down and then click OK. It will change all that are highlighted.

I still say the Kenwood TH-F6 was the single best HT every made. 400 memory slots, including 7-letter names. Triband, with 220! And wide receive from AM to 1.2ghz. The best HT I've ever had. If only it could do cross-band repeat, like the older TH-79 could do...

I’ve had my uv5r a couple of years now and never used chirp, always done it off the keypad this way it gets you to know your radio.

I have zero clue how to do this on the keypad. I need to learn! But this has helped me to listen while I study for my test. Best of both worlds.

I am not big on Baofeng or similar radios. I do have a few of each that we use on the farm. However, for amateur I will not use, but with that, I use the RT System for cables, programs and both in kit form for all radios, work, amateur and not worry about if its in English and no download virus/malware ....

Hi Josh. Thank you for the awesome videos! You give very clear instructions and you make complex concepts easy to understand. I’m studying right now for my technician license...hope to take the test when all the Covid-19 craziness is over. BTW, I used to live in Cerritos...graduated from Artesia High long before your were born! Keep up the great work.

This might be already mentioned and is probably late to this, but a quicker way to change the data in Chirp is to export the data as a .cvs file and open the .cvs in a spreadsheet program and make make your changes within the spreadsheet program. After you make your changes, save the file as a CVS and import it back into Chirp and out to your radio.
