Glad to help. It took me a lot of research to figure out how to do it. Once you understand it's mostly about repeating your channel info all the different screens. WW8PR
i have the MD9600 as well, programed a few analog repeaters. have not figured out the dmr yet, going to try this soon. its a nice radio.. just wish i could figure out digital.
Thanks Paul. You're the first I've seen that took the time to explain the process. All the others zip through the video as if all their viewers were already familiar with the software, which is crazy because unfamiliarity with the software is why we're here.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! You Rock man, you got me talking and made my first contact following your video, I made my first contact tonight on DMR!!! I am in south Texas and spoke with Virginia and Toronto Canada!!! You Rock man!!! Im your newest subscriber :)
Hello Ruben! I am also in South Texas, Corpus Christi is my home. Call here is W5HSJ. I agree that this video is a lifesaver... I just bought my first DMR handheld and it is all so very confusing and Learnelectronics has definitely stepped up to the plate and broke this down for us 63 yr olds can understand it.
@@learnelectronics Thank you so much for an excellent video and tutorial! I do have a question or two if I may? So the freq you programmed in is obviously to transmit to your hotspot assumed to be in your house or nearby? I have ordered a new JumboSpot, but it hasn't come in yet. Next question, I assume since I don't have my Jumbospot yet, in order for me to connect to DMR, I would have to use the frequenices to local Corpus Christi, Texas DMR repeaters in order to "connect to the network"? I understand when my Jumbospot gets in, it will be connected to the internet through my wireless router/modem so that will get me into the DMR network. HOWEVER, I will try to look and see if you or anyone else has a UA-cam video on how you actually make a contact, in other words, once all this is programmed into your radio, how to you actually connect and how do you decide or select an individual to chat with? Sorry, I am still very green with the learning curve with all this. Thank you for your patience and understanding! God bless, Mark
Got my Radio ID, had my radio with me at the office yesterday, and I worked from home today, found your video again and was ready to get this HT talking, but I left my radio at the office, SMH. Thanks from a fellow Buckeye and Ham and Electronic Enthusiast. I don't come on YT often but I always check your videos, they are always fantastic and get me interested in electronics again. So I will program my radio tomorrow and must admit this is by far the best explanation and class on getting the DMR radio going and explaining.
Well done, I probably came across a dozen videos that didn't actually address the subject of their title, or seemed to be geared towards people who already knew what they were trying to talk about. The search algorithms these days don't help at all. Thank you.
Thank you for this helpful video! I’m trying to wrap my head around this mode and this is the best video yet for helping an old head analog guy like myself understand DMR.
Actually, DMR is a open European radio standard from ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). One of the first uses was in PMR446 kind of the European equivalent of FRS. Motorola just tinkered a bit with it and put a fancy name on what came out. Their initial intent was to be able to sell radios using the standard to European customers. When other manufacturers started selling to the rest of the world, so did Motorola and that included the United States.
I thoroughly enjoy your teaching methods it resonates with my learning style, I predict this video will continue to attract those seeking a firm DMR footing.
Thank you! That was well explained and will get the ball rolling for me. I just ordered the Baofeng DM 1702B gps and was feeling a little bit like a mistake. What you've just showed me, gives me the power to get it done correctly! I ferry sail boats all over Southern Calif. sometimes things don't work on them? So im making sure that I come on the ready and don't have to fly blind! Keep up the great break downs. We need it!
I think you also need to mention to in the channel section to set the color code and the time slot. Depending on if you are using a Hotspot or Repeater etc etc.
I've had my TYT MD-UV380 literally sitting in the box because of all the confusing videos on DMR programming. I watched your video and it all made sense. I think this old guy will have his DMR programmed and on the air by the weekend! Thank you for making this easy to follow video! Earl - KJ7SNM
About 3 years ago I went to buy one of these DMR radios at a major company. Want mention the name. I knew very little about DMR then. They looked up my location. 2 DMR repeaters that might be close enough for me to operate. He also said if your nice to this guy that lives x location, he might let you use it or you can run it on your PC like most do. I started thinking this guy sure don't want to sell me a radio .I really like your reviews. . So I was biter about DMR from the start. Pretty much over the years I have stayed away from DMR and SDR. My conclusion is any radio that needs a PC for any reason I will not buy. I told someone else that they said in 5 years that's all they will be. To me a radio served a purpose at one time. Hams done phone patch that allowed our veterans to talk to the family over long distances. This was way before my time. In my time we didn't have cell phones. Kinda cool to talk from your your radio to a land-line. I think many of the Elmer's have others to program there radios for them... Keep the reviews, kit building, and all the good content coming... 73s
There are different flavors in Radio world, analog or digital, times are changing, in the past analog radio was the best to communicate but nowadays the new technology "Digital" turned world into a new era of communication with different standards, now i see young people going into radio communications than before, myself I'm using digital radio with internet for longer range, so we need to improve in better communication, 73
You dont have to have a computer to use these radios. They will function just fine on analog repeater and you can set up simplex channels and talk radio to radio and do group or private call, send texts, have encrypted comms etc. Very useful radios for groups, no internet required.
I have been looking at several videos how to program the TYT 380. This is the first Video - that actually shows it step - by step - so it is understandable. Thanks for a very good video..... oz5agb, Denmark/Spain.
Only one problem, you dont need a scan list for a hotspot as you need to kerchunk to get access to the talkgroup so you will only be scanning the static channel.
Thank you for the clearest explanation of HOW DMR radio works ands how to make a Code Plug! It would be nice to see a similar video explaining how to download the DMR ID list to a TYT MD UV380. ;-)
How to program a DMR codeplug: 1) Set radio on fire. 2) Throw radio in trash. Sorry, I'm a D-Star fanboy. We've gotta keep up appearances and all with rival gangs....lol :-) Great and informative video, as always!
my md-uv380 is stuck on the TYT screen on powerup. I have tried firmware update but nothing. Any tips? Is my radio bricked or what? On power down I see a different screen saying POwering down and shows batt level. What am i doing wrong
Excellent presentation. A minor nitpick. 435-438MHz, inclusive, it set aside in all 3 IARU regions for satellite operations. From a practical standpoint, given the low power, etc, it probably would not cause a problem, though cases of interference have occurred. It would be better to use another frequency outside this range.
Thank you SO much for your video. On a whim, (A "Gotto" pronounced Got To as if I Got To have this, whatever, RIGHT NOW!) I purchased a Radioddity GD-77. I programmed my local analog 443.600 repeater and thought I would Never understand how to program the digital side. I watched Several other videos and got even More confused. I NOW HAVE HOPE!!! Your video was EXACTLY what I NEEDED!! 73 WD8BKH
I just got one of these and not got a licence yet but want to listen to my friends on DMR how to I program a repeater as there is other boxes to worry about like colour code for example, the radio cane with stuff programmed in already but I want to add more to listen too I don't want to add a jumbo spot just repeaters that my friends why and add different frequencies thanks
Just starting to look into DMR radios...when your test audio came through it sounded like Stephen Hawking, so odd to me. I hear some DMR chats on my Uniden scanner and it does sound very clear but very artificial (not sure what word describes it). I'm seeing the TYT 390 for only $129. Might pick one up for myself this Christmas. Thanks for putting this tutorial together. It'll definitely help me down the road.
If we move across County for a few months, what would need to be changed? I moved from Iowa to Alabama. I have a complete working code plug, but that doesn't do much good now.
Great, thanks Paul. Any way you know to use Linux for this operation? I can't get the MD380 software to run under WINE and there doesn't seem to be a Linux version.
Hello I have the Baofeng DR1801 I do not have a radio ID I just want to use the radio as a scanner on DMR. Is this possible? I would also like to disable Tx. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
Hey there. I have the 390 version which is pretty much the same radio. Do you know why I would not be able to hear audio back from a DMR repeater? I programmed as you did but just used the uplink/downlink repeater pair instead. thanks
I PROGRAMMED RADIO AS SHOWEN BUT RADIO WILL NOT CONNECT TO MMDVM HOTSPOT .ALL SETTING ON PI-STAR DASHBOARD ARE CORRECT AND STILL CAN'T GET RADIO TO CONNECT ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT
I dont have a Hotspot I do have a DMR repeater about 10 miles away Richland County , can I get the same information from the repeater instead of a Hot Spot?? N8CJT
Yes, this worked perfectly, I had this figured out on my own after I put my JumboSpot together. The problem I'm having now is actually getting the repeater to work. I've heard people talking on the repeater a time or two, but there are also times when the recieve light is on, but I'm not hearing anything, and when I key the repeater, the light is red while transmitting, then green as the repeater is saying something - that I don't hear - and otherwise is not working... Any thoughts?
How would you know what frequency to use where you put 438.00000 . Totally new to this :) The rest was great, really showed me what I needed to know to understand them better. Thanks
I really appreciate your video. It explains very well the process. Now I have one question. I use my radio with a Zumspot . If I want to use it on a repeater and keep the Zumspot ability too. Does that mean that I have to program each channel again but now with the repeater's frequencies? or is there some other way to do it?... I am kind of confused now if I want to use this radio with a repeater. thanks in advance.
All I want to talk to, directly, are several TYT radios and several Motorola CP200d radios. No repeaters or network. All on the same property, a racetrack. I'm trying to clone the TYT radios to the code-plug info I read from one of the Motorola radios...
Great video. I am new to HAM completely. I have a DMR Radio (RD-5R) and no license (Studying for the tests). QUESTION: When you were setting up the channels, you added Rx and Tx frequencies. Where are those coming from. I am looking at several call groups lists, and none of them show frequencies. Can you add some clarity on this?
Great video! I realize this is an older video but wanted to ask a question. I've programmed my radio just like this but when I select a channel, instead of seeing the name I see the channel frequencies. It's really confusing because I use a hot spot so every channel shows the same frequency instead of the channel name.

I’m still fuzzy on what exactly the “Group List” field does. Can someone clarify that for me, please?
very nice video for a beginner like myself success following your tutorial thanks so much.
I was hoping that you would do a video on DMR and digital radio. Great job Paul, well explained.
Best intro to DMR ever! Ohio radio operator too
Thank you 73
i"m not Licenced yet , can the 16 PMR 446 Channels Analogue and Digital be used on it , does it have Alpha Tagging for it to?
Thanks
how do you know what frequency you should be on?
thanks so much for the easy way you have shown what to do. regards Allan Stoke on Trent UK

If you need to program a private call but do not have a hot spot, do you use your local DMR repeater frequencies for programming it as a channel?
Thanks really simplified things for me.
Thank you i learned something new and the way you did the video i was able to understand it for the most part :)
I dont have a Hotspot I do have a DMR repeater about 10 miles away Richland County , can I get the same information from the repeater instead of a Hot Spot?? N8CJT
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Does this work with a baofeng ch6-DMR? Newbie question...
How do you program analog channels on a DMR radio?
Great job with this. Thanks for sharing.
One which owns a TYT should switch firmware to Open GD77. Makes a basic DMR to a beast of a radio.
Yes i think i got it but i want to add some 2 meter freqs also so i'll be able contact some my friends too !
Awesome video, Thank you so much W4BAF
Great instructional video. Thank you.
Please some times make a tutorial about oscilloscope vs spectrum analyser and Basics of spectrum analyser
How would you know what frequency to use where you put 438.00000 . Totally new to this :) The rest was great, really showed me what I needed to know to understand them better. Thanks
If I have no 'hotspot' in the house would that be my local repeater for when I'm out and about ?
I really appreciate your video. It explains very well the process. Now I have one question. I use my radio with a Zumspot . If I want to use it on a repeater and keep the Zumspot ability too. Does that mean that I have to program each channel again but now with the repeater's frequencies? or is there some other way to do it?... I am kind of confused now if I want to use this radio with a repeater. thanks in advance.
Why you have used same frequency for Tx and Rx?
Great video, when you were about to save the file you created what did you call the file ? I didn't understand
You can give it any name you like
All I want to talk to, directly, are several TYT radios and several Motorola CP200d radios. No repeaters or network. All on the same property, a racetrack. I'm trying to clone the TYT radios to the code-plug info I read from one of the Motorola radios...
Really interesting, dude! Really nice radio! 😃
Thank you for the video. It was alot of help!!!
They come from my "hotspot" if you have local repeaters, use those frequencies.
Where to get dp1400 codeplug any help appreciated.
Great video! I realize this is an older video but wanted to ask a question. I've programmed my radio just like this but when I select a channel, instead of seeing the name I see the channel frequencies. It's really confusing because I use a hot spot so every channel shows the same frequency instead of the channel name.
I dont know, sorry.
