    I've had my UV-5R for a while now and have procrastinated on studying for my Tech license. I finally bought the book last week and down loaded the "Ham Boss Tech" training app to my phone and started studying. I subscribe to David Canterbury's channel it was from there that my interest in Ham was rekindled. I happened to stumble across your channel and like what you promote so I subbed and will follow your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience and for taking the time to make these videos.

  • @darkencypher

    I just got my technician license a few days ago. Didn’t know a thing about Ham radio, but the class I took was literally nothing but studying the 400+ possible question, then taking the test at the end (which were 35 questions chosen from the ones we studied).
    I got 30 correct, which was a passing score.
    Now begins my journey to actually understand the theory behind the answers, lol!
    My recommendation is to find a club that puts on a 1 day course where you do nothing but study the possible test questions all day, then take the test at the end, taking advantage of your brain’s short term memory abilities. That way you can train hands-on with a club or on your own as a Licensed Technician. I’m going to look into joining a club soon to learn more and get some hands on.
    Thanks for the video bud!!! I look forward to learning from you.

    I've been toying with the notion that I need to get my Ham license for awhile. It started in the 70's and 80's when everyone had to learn "Code"... (Morse Code) before obtaining the appropriate license... Then, in the 90s, they gave you the OPTION to obtain a "no code" license... and now, once again, I am looking to get a HAM license.Since the 80's, I know that some frequencies have been reassigned (to military, etc.) and back then, you had to test to get certified for different bandwidths. I can across hoshnasi's UA-cam channel and am, once again ready to get this party started. Thanks for the wealth of information!

      +socksandtea NICE! I too used the Gordon West book and have talked with Gordo on a few ocassions now in person at the Ham Radio Outlet in Anaheim Ca. He is a great dude for the hobby!
      Keep me posted on how you're doing. What radio are you thinking about buying?

    • @socksandtea
      @socksandtea 8 років тому

      +hoshnasi Thanks very much. I recently bought the Baofeng UV-5R5 and some other goodies through your Amazon store. Using Chirp with its "stock config" pre-loaded options to program it was a breeze and made it so much easier to use. I really want to get a mobile unit for the jeep. Originally, I was going to just install a CB radio but then over the christmas break, I came across your series and the rest as they say is HAM history. My dream radio is the Yaesu FT-857D, far more capable than my limited current technician license will allow me to transmit on to fully exploit the full potential of it but it would future-proof me to a certain extent if I ever got the General license. Hmm..... :)

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  8 років тому +1

      +socksandtea Nice, the FT-857D is a pretty cool unit. Your technician class license grants access to all of 2m, 70cm and 6m. So you mind as well give it a shot if you wanted to buy that radio.

    • @socksandtea
      @socksandtea 8 років тому

      +hoshnasi I'd love to match it with a Yaesu ATAS-120 screwdriver antenna but its cost and the fact that it would be attached to the outside of the jeep might tempt some where I live to help themselves to it. I'd definitely have to detach it when I am away for extended periods from the jeep as our carport is pretty open. Our part of Palo Alto attracts a lot of enthusiastic daytime shoppers just on the prowl for a great bargain. 73!

    No one be afraid to learn , to get started, these days to attempt such a simple feat as getting the first VHF radio license. I mean, the knowledge part of it has been so degraded by the gov'ts by far that it's ridiculous. I mean, in Canada 40 yrs ago, the exam bordered on a real communications technician exam. We had 3 classes, now only 2 classes, novice and advanced and digital to use what we had was a crude form of radio bases internet plus 13 to 20 wpm morse op. Now the knowledge level is so awesomely ridiculous. But, the code challenged all to many and even the knowledge base I believe was lowered as the manufactures took the building your own simple station was not needed anymore - and numbers of ops were dropping year by year as other technologies like cell phones and the internet came in. But now, it's all married together, but lacking all other technologies - only Ham radio may save your life and help in civility in any disaster. I still am a CW person, as still today with all it's myriad ways of communicating is really the only signal that may only be able to get through the worst of conditions. Even CW is still needed in a Marine ships license. There hasn't been a better time to get your license, your gov't call letter and get deep into the unknown.

    Love your channel
    Question on part 95
    An Amateur radio would also be illegal if they can transmit on FRS above the .5 watt limit.
    The 888s is for dedicated GMRS or Amateur Radio use.
    Example : the Cobra CXT195 sold in blister packs at Walmart and online , they do have a fixed antenna and fall below the maximum power output, they cant be reprogrammed, they have been reclassified as FRS radios, they also dont have GMRS repeater access or the ability to program them for repeater use. (2017 )
    part 95 is antiquated or the Cobra CXT195 would be illegal.
    ( at least the 888s can be reprogrammed for amateur USE or Shared FRS/GMRS and dedicated GMRS frequencies for repeater use. )
    the 888s can be programmed for the FRS channels 8-14 but cant transmit on those channels because the maximum power is .5 watts
    you can monitor those channels and turn off the transmit ability on those stations. ( remember FRS channels are Free so they are a low priority for the FCC is a person transmits using a radio that goes above the .5 watt limit.
    the 888s also only has 16 channel memory slots if you programmed the radio with those out of the 22 available channels , it would be hard to identify an illegal user unless you transmitted in the FRS only stations because the 888s lowest power setting is above the FRS maximum limit.
    the 888s can be programmed for repeater GMRS use. and can transmit on GMRS and Shared GMRS frequencies with a GMRS licence ( $70 for 10 years, no testing, good for all family members, gmrs repeater use for increase distance )
    or on Amateur radio frequencies with a Amateur radio licence ( $15 to take test, passing score allows transmitting on approved frequencies.
    NOTE: An Amateur Radio Licence does not allow you to transmit on dedicated GMRS stations , or on FRS stations above the .5 watt range.
    the part 95 would make every piece of Amateur radio equipment illegal if they couldn't reduce the power watts to .5 because they still can dial in the 8-14 FRS frequencies
    95.1791 Sales of GMRS/ FRS combination radios prohibited.
    (a) Effective September 30, 2019, no person shall be permitted to manufacture or import, sell or offer for sale any radio equipment capable of operating under both this subpart (GMRS) and subpart B (FRS) of this chapter.

      This is true. Using an amateur radio on gmrs or frs is not lawful in the eyes of the fcc.

    Every once in awhile I start wondering if I might get back into Amateur Radio. I was formerly a holder of a tech license in the 60's & 70's After watching a couple of your vlogs I went to the broadcastify site to take a listen. About 3 minutes of hearing what was going on I was more positive then ever that I wanted no part of amateur radio. The very same inane crap is still what is most common. HAMS want to talk about, primarily, their job, their family and their rig. Just like 40+ year ago. SSDD Yawn

    for some local authorities to find you, they'd have to use (waste) a lot of physical and human resources, triangulate your position, depend on you transmitting long enough, and depend on you to still be there when they arrive........basically, the only abuse they are against is on police or government freqs, but many are just encrypting their own stuff. That's much cheaper than trying to hunt down a bored teenager.

      If the person is question is only transmitting on emergency frequencies. However, alot of people are illegally transmitting on the amateur bands and they generally do a good job policing themselves and reporting it.

      Yeah. The older videos are still good to go. There are some updates to the technician question pool. But the content is still the same pretty much.

    We watched your intro video and the wife and I are interested in ham radio for things like simple communications between us on camping trips and being able to get a hold of someone in an emergency where ever you might be, woods, forest, mountains, exttt. What are your thoughts? While I have always used a CB radio we have no experience on ham radios. Thanks

    I passed my Tech License "KM6DMG"(scored 100%) but do not know any HAMs and want to purchase a quality radio and make my first call. I just don't want to do it wrong! My older brother said: "The first thing you learn about any new hobby is you bought all the wrong stuff". So! What is the best handheld (that I can put a good vehicle rooftop antenna on) to get and why? i am not looking for the best deal, I want the best radio. Thanks to all you folks that know!!

    U rock, all the electronic HF and VHF & UHF should send you their radios to evaluate,
    and do a raffle for extra excitement (at their cost) we will pay for beer & evaluations.
