Chirp will let you have multiple tabs open at once so you can copy and paste the contents/items from 1 radio into another. A quick tip when you download the repeater list put it in a separate tab and use the copy/paste function to move it over so you don't accidentally overwrite the memories in you radio. It also has a few premade requency list for like the NOAA Weather, National calling frequencies ect.

Held Down the 3 key and turned on the radio. The number is BFB298. Chirp says I'm only good to 296. The radio is a weirdo. It is labeled UV-5R (Baofeng) but it is an 8 watt version. Not labeled anything else but UV-5R anywhere including under the battery which is a double-sized battery and adds height to the unit -- fitting nicely on the back AND underneath the radio which makes it taller than the usual UV-5R. I have a regular old UV-5R too and I think its possible this cable came with that one which I have had for 4-5 years. Try putting in a transmit frequency that's right at the edge of a ham band, say 144.000. As I recall, each channel has to have a transmit frequency, even the ones you just listen to, like the wx radio.
on the Chinese import radios which one do you think would be the best of all of them. you played with most of them and then programming them with chirp and do I need the red cable since I have windows 10. Hi Dave - just got a uv-5r plus to start my HAM journey. Out of the box I can't receive much of anything. Will CHIRP program (and make the config changes) the needed frequencies to receive communications from those broadcasting or do I need to manually enter these in CHIRP? Any help would be very much appreciated.
It can only operate on one "codeplug" at a time. Saving a codeplug intended for your radio will enable you to upload it again later, provided you "save as new" before editing. In this manner you can have several different environments at your disposal within a few minutes of reuploading a different codeplug.
Hi Dave...I want to ask you if chirp supports any midland radios..I searched their website but I could not find any midland model...thank you in advance!!!!
Dave, hopefully a quick question. I have Chirp, I have Baofeng UV-5RA, I have the programing cable and have been able to move information back and forth to the radio. My issue is that Chirp will not allow me to populate ToneSql, DTCS Code, DTCS Pol, Cross Mode, Duplex, fields in chirp. I am not sure if the lack of data is the cause of my performance issue. (haven't been able to recieve anything). I see the fields populated in your example of chirp, I assume I should also be able to populate the data but I cant. I can get the drop down, select a value, but cant get the program to retain / save the data. Any ideas. Thanks Art.
Are you using the right model radio in chirp? If you're just using a similar model, you may not be able to program everything. If you're still having trouble, chirp has some user forums that might be able to help
I'm having a issue with port forwarding. I keep getting a could not open port COM4: [Error 5] Access Denied. Any suggestions. I'm using chirp and also running. Driver 3.2.0.0 for the cable.
There's a whole thing against Baofeng radios now, from the FCC. Apparently, Amcrest Industries, which runs Baofeng Radio US, is in violation of FCC's Part 90 restriction. Part 90 dictates that radios can only max out at 1.78W and Baofengs support double that, at 4W. In fact, my UV-5R variant boasts a whopping 8 watt power range. Long story short, I couldn't get CHIRP to work recently. I had it working before but I think CHIRP cut out Baofeng support for the previous reasons.
Dave i got the cable for my UV-82HP and downloaded CHIRP and runtime. When I go to the radio drop down I dont get the option for which "port" to use. I noticed on the video you have "com5" . Mine just says bluetooth. Any thoughts? It doesnt see my radio. It says something went wrong Any help appreciated.
Great video,My 2nd UV5RA gives ERROR : Radio refused to send second block 0x1f00 when trying to download from radio, any suggestions? No issue with cable or drivers since my 1st UV5RA is responding normally! web searching didn't help.. Thanks in Advance!
Dave, HELP - I purchased some Baofengs for our family vehicles in case of emergencies but when I try to dial in the NOAA weather reporting the radios say "Cancel" as I dial in the last digit. I read on the internet that CHIRP can be used to reset the lower and upper frequency range for VHF and UHF that can't be done thru the radio key menu on the handhelds. We are trying to make sure we receive weather and emergency information on these radios. Could you do a video showing how to use CHIRP for changing the frequency ranges to receive these vital stations? Thanks
The power level for most VHF/UHF handhelds and mobiles is not continuously variable. You have to pick from one of the preprogrammed levels, usually high and low, and in some cases there are intermediate levels. There should be a column in CHIRP for the power level.
David Casler I bought a second hand baofeng uv 82 . And i cant get it to scan any memory channels that i program into the radio. It will only scan channel 000 and 127 . Which seem to be preprogrammed into the radio. Any ideas on whats wrong with the radio?

I'm programming a baofeng to work with garmins. I'm wondering how to set up privacy codes. I understand that you set this under the 'Tone' column. It looks slightly different in the Baofeng than Chirp. For Example on the Bao, you set RTCS and TTCS i believe to whatever privacy code you want. How do you perform this in chirp ? You put it in the tone column and then which tone mode do I set it to ?
@@davecasler alright thanks i got it with some trial and error. You enter your main freq, then select TSQL for tone mode column, then enter privacy code under ToneSql column.
We have 5 wouxun KG-UV3D for the family and I program them for LA area Repeaters. Now we move to Utah Saint George, since I can't find the cable or de Software I use so we can't use them. CHIRP Radio Menu available have no KG UV3D and none of the others work. The cable a bought is the correct one and the mini-cd software and manual are use less. Do you or some one have information of how to reset to factory the radios. The regular way MENU-key won't work since is set to program.

Great video. Have you ever noticed any of your radios transmitting while communicating with the software? All my Baofengs do, and I have heard the tell-tale signs of others in my area programming their radios too. I recommend disconnecting the antenna before downloading or uploading.
Ah, I guess I should have suggested a dummy load or a Faraday cage. I was thinking more about the interference issue rather than SWR. Please let us all know what you find out.
hello david I have the chirp program but I don't have the disc and I'm 100% lost about programing my uv-5r and I don't know about the drivers I wish the was easer
The hard part is getting the cable working. The cable actually has a chip embedded inside the part you plug into your USB port. If that cable has a chip made by Prolific, your chances aren't good at getting it to work with Windows 10. See my video on the subject at dcasler.com/2016/11/14/baofeng-tyt-wouxun-programming-cable-that-works/.

Sounds frustrating! Go to baofengtech.com/download. They suggest using CHIRP (and note that CHIRP updates daily), but at the bottom of the page is the OEM software. Even the manufacturer thinks CHIRP is better, but you could give it a try. Good luck! 73, Dave
hey dave do uv-82 baofeng has the same steps in prog. using chirp ain't there any changes in the setting cause i tried doing your way it always respond "radio did not respond" what will i do??
You ought to do something like the old Saturday morning TV show, Watch Mr. Wizard, where you have someone who is new the amateur radio and talk them through the process and maybe do tests and experiments. I bet you'd find areas where you think it's a logical step but would confuse someone new. Pros are a little blind to how a newbie thinks and that's why I think going the Mr. Wizard route would work great. Not that your video isn't already very good. I used to sell cameras and over time I found that I was talking over their heads so I made the effort to slow down and explain step by step what I was talking about and why a feature would benefit them or not..
Chirp works more reliably (flawlessy?) under linux. Linux has a lot - a lot - of free Amateur radio software that can come bundled in one package. Linux, such as Ubuntu, is free to use, easy to install (about 10 minutes) and can sit next to Windows on your hard drive (you have a choice when booting which OS you want to choose). It also runs extremely well on old computers/laptops and newer laptops and netbooks making it great for field work. 73's M7AGG

nothing got saved... what am i missing ??
sorry , stupid me.. it was still in VFO .. went to memory and all was there lol
Can you modify the FM to transmit on AM in chirp as well as extend the frequencies?
I am not aware of any way to do this
Ok got it downloaded .now I am useing my baofeng for firefighter stuff ..car wrecks traffic control..but I would like to put some frequency's in .to Liston to..but not key up on ..while on a call..how do I do that.i put 22 frequency's in to talk on till I get my license..but just want to be able to talk an listen to dispatch..an police an stuff..can u do that.?
Try putting in a transmit frequency that's right at the edge of a ham band, say 144.000. As I recall, each channel has to have a transmit frequency, even the ones you just listen to, like the wx radio.
on the Chinese import radios which one do you think would be the best of all of them. you played with most of them and then programming them with chirp and do I need the red cable since I have windows 10. And yes I know we're getting to the line of the Chinese in port may not be possible anymore
Tnxs
The red cable sold by PowerWerx works for Wouxun and Baofeng radios so far as I know.
Just what i needed. Thanks
Hello Dave! How or where do I enter the transmit frequency on CHIRP
There should be a column labeled Transmit or TX.
Good day to you i have also tried to look for the transmit frequency column no luck
Why did the volume need to be turned up when you connected the radio
Once you save the img onto the radio, can you still use the radio with the original software?
It can only operate on one "codeplug" at a time. Saving a codeplug intended for your radio will enable you to upload it again later, provided you "save as new" before editing. In this manner you can have several different environments at your disposal within a few minutes of reuploading a different codeplug.
I can’t get chirp to communicate with the radio. I have tried all com port numbers. COM1 …etc. Is there something I am missing? I see you using COM6.
My new Baofeng UV-5R populated "COM4". That's what I used.
Dave,
Great job with the CHIRP demo, especially showing how to move memories from one brand HT to another. WB3BJU
Thank you
Hi Dave...I want to ask you if chirp supports any midland radios..I searched their website but I could not find any midland model...thank you in advance!!!!
If they don't list them, then CHIRP probably doesn't support them.
Hi dave I just got a baofeng uv 5r how can I program 33.98 into the radio
I'm having a issue with port forwarding. I keep getting a could not open port COM4: [Error 5] Access Denied. Any suggestions. I'm using chirp and also running. Driver 3.2.0.0 for the cable.
If access is denied, it could mean it's already in use by some other process.
I did this thinking it was a video on how to program uv82hp. Now I'm stuck. I don't have a wouxon
I had it working before but I think CHIRP cut out Baofeng support for the previous reasons.
chirp's website still lists many Baofeng products.
Yep, I was able to get mine to work with Chirp. I had a Prolific cable driver problem that I got straightened out.
Dave
i got the cable for my UV-82HP and downloaded CHIRP and runtime. When I go to the radio drop down I dont get the option for which "port" to use. I noticed on the video you have "com5" . Mine just says bluetooth. Any thoughts? It doesnt see my radio. It says something went wrong
Any help appreciated.
Dave how do I find the name of the repeater ?
Great video,My 2nd UV5RA gives ERROR : Radio refused to send second block 0x1f00 when trying to download from radio, any suggestions? No issue with cable or drivers since my 1st UV5RA is responding normally! web searching didn't help.. Thanks in Advance!
You might try doing a factory reset or else making sure the firmware is up to date.
Thanks
I think I covered that in some older videos. I'll keep this in mind as a potential topic.
Hello, David what programming cable do you recommend? Your video was great, thanks for going at a speed that’s easy to follow for a beginner!
Hi Dave, can you maybe explain where in Chirp, i can power down the Baofeng UV-5R from 5w to 0.5w?
The power level for most VHF/UHF handhelds and mobiles is not continuously variable. You have to pick from one of the preprogrammed levels, usually high and low, and in some cases there are intermediate levels. There should be a column in CHIRP for the power level.
@@davecasler thanks sir, found it
David Casler I bought a second hand baofeng uv 82 . And i cant get it to scan any memory channels that i program into the radio. It will only scan channel 000 and 127 . Which seem to be preprogrammed into the radio. Any ideas on whats wrong with the radio?
Dave- Great video. What is the cable you have that works with Beefing/Windows 10? The one I use requires me to change drivers every time I program it. 73s KJ4MFW
The "red" cable comes from PowerWerx. See ua-cam.com/video/nzkFVtyttKM/v-deo.html
What selection do I use to program the Uv-5r-ex
Did you find what selection to use for the UV-5R-ex?
i must be doing something wrong. i have completed every step on this video but when i go to the radio i cannot see the programmed channels. please help. Bogeng uv 9rplus.
I trust you uploaded the programming to the radio. Perhaps another reader has had a similar problem and can offer suggestions.
@@davecasler I had to turn off hold menu and turn on to get the radio into channel mode. I should have read basic functions 1st. I was afraid I was doing something wrong or bad cable because I couldn't find my programmed frequencies. Thanks for the video! This is a lot of information. I purchased the ham test book going to get my license soon. Again thanks.
HELLO DAVE, I AM HAVING MAJOR ISSUES WITH DOWNLOADING FROM MY GT-5TP RADIO USING THE CHIRP SOFTWARE, THE UV 82HP DISPLAYS A ERROR POP UP. STATING THAT THE RADIO IS NOT RESPONDING. CAN YOU HELP ME SOLVE THIS PROBLEM? MY APOLOGIES FOR THE CAPS.
Try turning the radio's audio to about halfway up. Make sure the radio end of the cable is plugged all the way in.
How should I write my Baofeng uv6 with the RX and TX frequencies?.I need both ,such as RX159.025 and TX159.100.
Help David Casler !
You do this with the programming software. Note that the two frequencies you mention are not ham radio frequencies.
Awesome Dave, very nice mformative video.
This is a use outside of ham radio, so I can't comment with any certainty.
@@davecasler alright thanks i got it with some trial and error. You enter your main freq, then select TSQL for tone mode column, then enter privacy code under ToneSql column.
My port option(s) has nothing listed... drop down blank too. Suggestions?
Your computer is not finding the programming cable. There are a few radios that use true USB programming. Perhaps you have one of those?
Reinstall USB driver or use a new cable that supports data.
Look at the Chinese version of the Wouxun website to see if they have programming software. Check also PowerWerx's website as they are the importer for the Wouxun.
@@davecasler Thank you David, I let you know the out come.😀
@@davecasler SO far, I have the wrong cable, the cable should be RED
I just bought two Luiton LT-458 and can't find any help on how to program these. I have ZERO experience, this is my first radio set. I managed to download CHIRPS on my MacBook (which was challenging enough) but I don't know where to go from here. Any help?
I'm not familiar with those radios. Chirp's website has instructions, but it assumes you know what all the values are all about. Your Tech license manual can help explain them.
should i reset my radio before doing the clone procedure? thank u.
Only if your radio's manual says to do so. I would think not.
@@davecasler thank you.
Sir.. higt hill whats is good work
Hi dave, i have a problem with my radio baofeng bf 888s. When i want donload from the radio there is notification...radio not responding ( i used chirp program ). My quetion is how can i solve that problem ( radio not responding ).
Thanks for your attention...
The problem is with the driver or the cable.
@@davecasler i have change three cables and same problems.
Could you give sugest for the driver?

GREAT VIDEO WILL CHIRP WORK ON A UV10 ???
According to chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home, it probably should.
Can you use CHIRP to select a frequency for the radio to use?
Yes.
@@davecasler I would appreciate a clue. I don't see it. Thanks!
VERY confusing and muddled after 11:23? "Offset by (mumble Or TO "100 " if you like)??" 100 What? Channels? Kilohertz? It became a mystery after that.
So thanks for the video it really goes in depth. however my Wouxun KGUV9DPlus is not working with the software. Any thoughts on when this will be available?
You'll have to contact the folks at CHIRP.
Very impressed.. do you have videos to program the TYT 8000E? I’ve been trying to program it but having issues..
AJ J now Chirps supports the UV8000D/E
I wish chirp came for android. and a micro usb cable.
chirp would not work in Java, which is what Android runs on. It couldnt be fully implemented
Great video. Have you ever noticed any of your radios transmitting while communicating with the software? All my Baofengs do, and I have heard the tell-tale signs of others in my area programming their radios too. I recommend disconnecting the antenna before downloading or uploading.
Disconnecting the antenna means an infinite SWR, which could be problematic. I'll look at mine and let you know.
Ah, I guess I should have suggested a dummy load or a Faraday cage. I was thinking more about the interference issue rather than SWR. Please let us all know what you find out.
Instructions state you should tune to an unused frequency when you're programming the radio.
I would like it if chirp would create a codeplug for the radioddity gd 77 .
I would too, but you need to use the Radioddity software to do so.
hello david I have the chirp program but I don't have the disc and I'm 100% lost about programing my uv-5r and I don't know about the drivers I wish the was easer
HEY DAVE WHEN I TRY TO IMPORT THE FREQUENCY FROM THE RADIO THE FRIST BOX THAT SAYS PORT I DID LIKE YOU SAID AND I GET ANY ERROR CODE POP UP I DONT KNOW WHAT IM DOING WRONG
Maybe you have your com port wrong or using a cable that doesn’t support data?
Hi Dave from UK, your Videos are first class , I have just got a WOUXUN KG-UV 9K and the RED Programme cable, I want to programme using Chirp but as yet this radio is not supported by Chirp but the KG-UV9D Plus is would it be ok to use Chirp as a UV9D for my UV9K , looking forward to your reply Thankyou
Not sure, but you could try.
Hi I just recently programmed my UV5R with CHIRP and wanted to program the same settings into my wife's UV5R and I am getting an error of "The upload was stopped because the firmware version of the image ( Ver BFB251 ) does not match that of the radio (HN5RV01 " anyone could help it be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Sounds frustrating! Go to baofengtech.com/download. They suggest using CHIRP (and note that CHIRP updates daily), but at the bottom of the page is the OEM software. Even the manufacturer thinks CHIRP is better, but you could give it a try. Good luck! 73, Dave

Another UA-camr got back to me. I needed to do " a read to write" . and it solved the problem. thanks
hey dave do uv-82 baofeng has the same steps in prog. using chirp ain't there any changes in the setting cause i tried doing your way it always respond "radio did not respond" what will i do??
Your query would be better directed to the folks at chirp (chirp.danplanet.com)
73's M7AGG
