Terrific! The 70s Supremes were far more soulful and it was great to hear Mary & Cindy's vocals higher in the mix. The harmonies were great. Between 1970-72the group was far more successful on the UK charts than back home in America.
Without Mary Wilson The Supremes would have ended with the departure of Ross in 1969. She fought to save the group she loved so much. Got no support from Motown (Mr Gordy). Long live the Supremes!
They probably would’ve kept it with Cindy, Berry treated her equally to Mary. Berry never signed off on those other Supremes they were hired under Mary as Supremes as she had partial ownership of the name. That’s why when she left Berry said no cause there was no original signed members
Who is watching this treasure in 2021? Rest in Peace Ms. Mary Wilson. 8-FEB-2021 Thank you for gracing ears around the world with your voice & your fire!
@@chaumari He pretty much tore his own company apart. Imagine the morale of Martha, Gladys and the other ladies who were superior singers and not getting any backing.
Yup! IF you could afford a color TV set!!! In my household, a color tv was a LUXURY item!! In 1970, we were still many decades away from having flat screen tv...only the Jetsons had that convenience!
This was the first single release after Diana Ross's departure, and probably their best song ever!!! Jean Terrell really hit the spot. Her brother was Ernie Terrell the WBA heavyweight boxing champion from 1965-67.
It's amazing that Diana Ross was only 26 years young in 1970! She, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and every other Woman in the Supremes and all over the Black Music spectrum in the 60s and 70s looked gorgoeous!
I watched this episode on TV 50 years ago. I was 12. I thought the Ladies were gorgeous. I was a white kid who loved Motown. I watched Soul Train on Saturday while my sister and I cleaned the house while mom was at work. Mom was working six days a week. So us kids "played" while cleaning. I was my job to vacuum....so I would dance while watching Soul Train. Never as good as the people there in the studio. But it made the chores better. Thank You Supremes miss you
That is very creative of you as kids to throw in some fun while cleaning the house! With the vacuum cleaner going, you must have turned the up the volume control to its maximum position!
Great performance! You can tell how relieved and happy Mary is at the end with that big smile on her face by enthusiastic cheering from the crowd. So much pressure on all 3 and they delivered!
A lovely song, performed with elegance and sheer talent, no reliance on vulgarities or crude displays. Should be required viewing for contemporary artists.
Be quiet musicians are who they are of any age. That's what making music is all about. If you don't like it DON'T LISTEN TO IT. YOU DON'T GET TO TELL CREATIVE PEOPLE HOW TO BE CREATIVE.
@@jondishmonmusicandstuff2753 On the contrary, we all get to judge the result of performers' creative endeavors. And why would I listen to music I dont like? You make no sense. At all.
I am pleasantly surprised to see how Jean/Cindy/Mary just seem to sing in one voice, but all three parts are equally beautiful! I believe this iteration of The Supremes would've been a renaissance for Motown if they promoted them like they did w Diana Ross.
I have always been very fond of this song all of my life, and I heard this song again the other day on my smalltown hometown oldies radio station, as I was going along in my truck to mow a customer's yard. I turned it all the way up, and toward the end the song is so thrilling at full volume that I could hardly contain myself. Jean Terrell's voice, along with everything in the background, was soaring! Now that is some kind'a song right there. AWESOMENESS!
People seem to think that the Supremes faded away after Diana Ross left the group. Not true! They had a number of hit records post Diana Ross. during the 1970's some of their biggest hits were up the ladder to the roof, Nathan jones, Floy Joy and Stoned Love. They also made many television appearances and toured the the world. The problems started when Berry Gordy and Motown stopped promoting and supporting the group in favor of creating a solo and film career for Diana Ross. This led to many personnel changes within the group and caused its demise in 1977. Mary Wilson is largely credited for the success of the 1970s Supremes and keeping their name and legacy in the spotlight for decades after they had disbanded. She was the only member that was a supreme from the beginning to the end. Mary went on to create a successful solo career, writing two bestselling books, appearing on numerous TV shows and performing in concert all around the world, supporting many charities and other worthy causes, etc. People also began to recognize her as a very good jazz and ballad singer with a powerful voice. She proved herself to be quite the trooper. R.I.P. Mary.
I love this song so much I can listening to this song all day and everyday Jean Terrell did her thing brought a new sound to the supremes after ms ross departure
An absolutely stunning performance, including the perfect lip syncing. Gorgeous gowns!! Mary / Cindy moving across the stage together, rather than standing in one spot, is subtle genius !! 🏆
I agree that it was probably lip-synced, since I'm so familiar with the record and this sounds just like it. I would've preferred a live performance, and Sullivan preferred his performances live, as well, but on some occasions, he would allow lip-syncing if it was difficult to recreate the sound of the original record live. That said, the choreography also stands out and is almost as much a part of the performance as the song itself.
I keep playing this over n over n over again.....I was just a boy during these times. Gee whiz....what has happened to today's music....if u can call it 'music'. ......
I keep watching this video over and over and it's sure take me back to when my mother and sisters used to wear those afros they don't have groups like tht anymore they all got it! Especially JEAN so fine.
You can tell both Mary and Cindy look at lot happier in this performance, compared to some from 68 & 69. It’s kind of funny how the supremes without Diana Ross actually out preformed her for the most part from 1970-1972 even though Motown was putting zero effort into the group, but was putting all their effort into Diana Ross. It’s just proves how special the Supremes truly were, with or without Diana, they were something truly spectacular!! Although, the supremes will always be Diana, Mary, and Flo, and nothing can ever change that!
Wow, I forgot about this song. I was in the 9th grade in 1970 when this song came out. Hearing this song February 19, 2021 takes me back into time 51 years ago to February 15, 1970. Lord, time went by so quick, and today I am 65 years old. 😭 Rest in peace Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson.

A favourite tune from my Welsh youth. Just learning 'You Can't Hurry Love' on guitar too and researching Mary Wilson, finding out what a decent person she was. Shocked and crestfallen to hear of her passing today - snatched away. Bye Mary.x
Jean was an awesome lead singer, if only gordy had given them the promotion they deserved. With ross out of the frame they were a proper group again, and sounding great.
....THIS was the moment, when The Supremes showed they CAN go 'Up The Ladder To The Roof'....of SUCCESS, without DIANA; Diana's solo success was faltering, while 'The 70's Supremes' were still charting, and changing.....It was short-lived (due to Music Industry backbiting tactics), but HERE!?...They glisten, shine, sparkle....and, are SUPREME. Mary is PROUD here, and SHOULD be....She may have passed on, but, will ALWAYS be....The ULTIMATE SUPREME. RIP Beautiful One...TOUCH.....
Yes, so sad how Diana’s career faltered and flopped. Whatever happened to her anyway? She’s been in showbiz for over 50 years selling records, making movies, and giving concerts and is worth $350 million dollars. What a failure. Maybe if she had stayed with the supremes she would have done well.
Very few songs from that time evoke emotions like this one. 1970 certainly shut the door on 60s music and this remains a bittersweet memory and by far my favorite Supremes song. I'm tearing up now. These wonderful ladies hit a home run, a 577 foot Mickey Mantle home run.

A toss -up between this and Stoned Love in my opinion !
I like Stoned Love (especially the album version) but I love Up The Ladder To The Roof, regardless of chart positions.
"Bad Weather"
I disagree it's Stoned Love imo
Oh Jean had a voice that commanded attention! I just loved the sound of her voice, and what she brought to the Supremes. She was the perfect replacement for Diana Ross.
Terrific! The 70s Supremes were far more soulful and it was great to hear Mary & Cindy's vocals higher in the mix. The harmonies were great. Between 1970-72the group was far more successful on the UK charts than back home in America.
1970: masterpiece
2023: masterpiece
This iteration of the Supremes is a great group and much underrated!
Without Mary Wilson The Supremes would have ended with the departure of Ross in 1969. She fought to save the group she loved so much. Got no support from Motown (Mr Gordy). Long live the Supremes!
XX
Wrong
Truth
They probably would’ve kept it with Cindy, Berry treated her equally to Mary. Berry never signed off on those other Supremes they were hired under Mary as Supremes as she had partial ownership of the name. That’s why when she left Berry said no cause there was no original signed members
You are so right about that once Diana hooked up with berry the whole concept change included the name Diana Ross and the. Surprises ❤❤❤
Who is watching this treasure in 2021? Rest in Peace Ms. Mary Wilson. 8-FEB-2021 Thank you for gracing ears around the world with your voice & your fire!
I'm watching March 2022.
Yes watching and loving
I still don’t understand why the 70’s supremes never seemed to achieve the success of the 60’s incarnations. They have some certified bops.
Berry Gordy stopped supporting them and all the girl groups. His obsession was Diana.
@@chaumari Plus he was having an affair with Diana
@@chaumari He pretty much tore his own company apart. Imagine the morale of Martha, Gladys and the other ladies who were superior singers and not getting any backing.
Mostly Brenda Yep, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, so many!
Berry Gordy and Motown lost interest in the Supremes after Diana left and barely promoted them.
They really maxed out the colors for the folks who could afford a color TV set!
Lol...!
I'm old enough to remember my parents using a colored screen and calling us having color tv. LOL
big improvement.
Yup! IF you could afford a color TV set!!! In my household, a color tv was a LUXURY item!! In 1970, we were still many decades away from having flat screen tv...only the Jetsons had that convenience!
My dad was still watching a black & white television in 1984 the year he passed away, he said he wasn't interested in a color TV at the time.
Mary Wilson rockin her stuff!! WOW.......what a woman!!
💯 bro 😎 hot hot hot
You can't beat those old school singers. They were the best 😊
Right on.
The lead singer that took Diana Ross's part on the song up the ladder to the roof is a beautiful woman and sexy too 💞😍
.....she really looked the way black women at the time would KILL to look like...curvy..womanly...sexy...
And can sing too.
Jean Terrell
Yes she is
She is the sister of boxer Earnie Terrell
This was the first single release after Diana Ross's departure, and probably their best song ever!!! Jean Terrell really hit the spot. Her brother was Ernie Terrell the WBA heavyweight boxing champion from 1965-67.
It's amazing that Diana Ross was only 26 years young in 1970! She, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and every other Woman in the Supremes and all over the Black Music spectrum in the 60s and 70s looked gorgoeous!
Yes, and I believe so was new lead singer Jean Terrell in 1970 here, singing in this clip alongside Mary and Cindy Birdsong. ❤🎶👍
Mary Wilson what a talented beauty RIP
Met Mary Wilson once at a book signing. She was gorgeous, gracious and very sweet.
Me too, and she was more beautiful in person, and so sweet and kind!
Jean was just as wonderful as a Supreme as Diana Ross was! She had a voice that stood out, just like Diana's!
Mary you have successfully gone up the ladder to the roof and now you’re in Heaven! Well done Mary ♥️ RIP
Thank You Supremes miss you
Me too i was a white kid who loved MOTOWN!!! I never realized until now that STONED LOVE AND UP THE LADDER TO THE ROOF WAS DONE WITHOUT DIANNA ROSS
Mary was ALWAYS ready! Always! RIP beautiful lady!❤
A lovely song, performed with elegance and sheer talent, no reliance on vulgarities or crude displays. Should be required viewing for contemporary artists.
Everything about this video is perfect. The singing, the choreography, the costumes, the song
I love the fresh purity and sweetness of their voice 💯🕵️♂️🙏
I have always been very fond of this song all of my life, and I heard this song again the other day on my smalltown hometown oldies radio station, as I was going along in my truck to mow a customer's yard. I turned it all the way up, and toward the end the song is so thrilling at full volume that I could hardly contain myself. Jean Terrell's voice, along with everything in the background, was soaring! Now that is some kind'a song right there. AWESOMENESS!
Loved this version of the Supremes, each member was allowed to sing ❤️
Ms. Wilson can now climb the ladder to the roof and see heaven much better. May she enjoy eternal peace.
That was beautiful
@@3BuckHead Not sure if that was meant for me, but if so, thank you.
just lifts you up
Still enjoying this fabulous song loud and proud 2024!
Jean Terrell had a great voice.Too bad they weren’t supported by motown.
@@williamhorwich2072 you right about that
An absolutely stunning performance, including the perfect lip syncing.
JEAN TERRELL WAS PERFECTION ! I RAN TO THE RECORD SHOP TO BUY MY COPY AFTER A WEEK WHEN THEY PERFORMED THIS HIT RECORD ON THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW !
I really liked this lineup.
🔥 - Didn't find this song till May 2024 - and Imma boomer. I love 1950s-1960s-style pop/R&B/soul music.
Glamour, Perfection, Supreme.
This is the song I first thought of upon hearing the demise of Mary Wilson. Rest with the angels Goddess of Motown.
Jean Terrell had a really pretty voice
I agree
She sounded like Diana a little bit but much better.
@@arlethalewis3318 Totally agree. Very few singers can do River Deep, Mountain High...she had the talent to.
Amen to that! Jean was just superb in this clip.
Jean Terrell also sung LEAD on Floy Joy too. That was good song. Who gives a crap about Diane (Diana)Ross.
Mary has taken that final journey - RIP Queen -
All the Supremes got to Shine on this tune. One of my Favorites❤
One of the best songs
Lol this is awesome. Saw this on living single and they had similar costumes and same color.❤❤❤❤
That was a great song and performance by all 3. Mary is my fave - God rest her soul - because my name is Mary, too. I LOVE that song!
RIP MARY WILSON...BEAUTIFULLY SUPREME!!
(2024) Beautiful Black WOMEN; covered from the neck down and serving Talent, Class, and BEAUTY... i love to see it, VS the near NAKED entertainers of today who reply on gimicks and cant let their True Talent do the talking for them.
A favourite tune from my Welsh youth. Just learning 'You Can't Hurry Love' on guitar too and researching Mary Wilson, finding out what a decent person she was. Shocked and crestfallen to hear of her passing today - snatched away. Bye Mary.x
Yes this was great and still is. Always turned up the radio when this came on.
One of my favorite supremes songs ❤
Jean was an awesome lead singer, if only gordy had given them the promotion they deserved. With ross out of the frame they were a proper group again, and sounding great.
Good bye Mary! You will be missed. Mary Wilson (March 6, 1944 - Feb 8, 2021)
always love this song it was in my head here I'm am
Living Single best show of all time has me here 2024
....THIS was the moment, when The Supremes showed they CAN go 'Up The Ladder To The Roof'....of SUCCESS, without DIANA; Diana's solo success was faltering, while 'The 70's Supremes' were still charting, and changing.....It was short-lived (due to Music Industry backbiting tactics), but HERE!?...They glisten, shine, sparkle....and, are SUPREME. Mary is PROUD here, and SHOULD be....She may have passed on, but, will ALWAYS be....The ULTIMATE SUPREME. RIP Beautiful One...TOUCH.....
BEAUTIFULLY SAID and I couldn’t agree more!! RIP to the one and only BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED MARY WILSON!!
This was perfectly worded.
Very few songs from that time evoke emotions like this one. 1970 certainly shut the door on 60s music and this remains a bittersweet memory and by far my favorite Supremes song. I'm tearing up now. These wonderful ladies hit a home run, a 577 foot Mickey Mantle home run.
Such a GREAT song ! 😊
I love these three angels.❤
Sing it, Jean!
Love this track
Great performance ladies
Their smiles say it all! Upbeat, sexy, talented and what a sound!!
Right on
A firm favourite from my childhood🥰
Classy and beautiful!! Love their movements!!
All the Supremes members are/were talented. Like Charlie's Angels cast changes, I enjoyed and appreciated all the talent and thrill. All deserve a special throw down!!
Great song. Such talent in the music industry back then.
What great singers! Wish there were more music like this today.
I don't think they are singing live
I really miss it.
@@TDH24Live - have you ever thought anything before ... that did not need to be written ?!? If so, the above is the first !!
Ms. Jeans voice was so beautiful
Love the song and the group
