Another thing about this record: Notice how as Motown production reached perfection, you hear nothing but music. Every space in the background has sound, some subtle some louder, all driving the melody along. It's a "wall of sound" but not like Phil Spector's. It''s somewhat subtle. But this is what Motown records was about all along, making records you simply could not resist loving.

Oh my gosh, this is a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL video... Jean Terrell, Mary Wilson, and Linda Laurence... three incredible women, I could easily have fallen in love with each of them... what artists, voices, the way they move, the most amazing performers, the positive energy. I remember watching Soul Train when I was a kid... but now, as an adult, to see this again, gives me goosebumps and makes me want to cry like a baby! This song ("Stone Love" is the correct title) was written by Frank Wilson, who also wrote "Up the Ladder to the Roof" which Jean made famous. Two magnificent songs, which will be with us for eternity because of their immense beauty. Thank you for posting this terrific video and making my day!

I would like to think so, but the final singles by The Supremes with Jean as lead singer were terrible. Motown had lost its way, and I think Jean realized that.
Motown's operational model had changed by the early seventies. Unfortunately for The Supremes, they didn't have anyone in the group who could write or produce hits, or who could find hits for the group. Acts like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, who could write and produce their own music, did well in the 70s. Acts that couldn't, namely Diana Ross and separately The Supremes, didn't do as well.

The great Frank Wilson who wrote this rarely gets the credit he deserves.. Marvin Gaye's Chained is another of his, along with one of the most loved and recognised northern soul songs in history "Do I Love You".
