I would like to think so, but the final singles by The Supremes with Jean as lead singer were terrible. Motown had lost its way, and I think Jean realized that.
Motown's operational model had changed by the early seventies. Unfortunately for The Supremes, they didn't have anyone in the group who could write or produce hits, or who could find hits for the group. Acts like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, who could write and produce their own music, did well in the 70s. Acts that couldn't, namely Diana Ross and separately The Supremes, didn't do as well.

Just being 12, at the time to me I think it was the best year of America. African-Americans were being realized as they too, were Americans. At least I saw it that way. I went all through school with Black kids, and I lived in a small Kansas town! I guess the small town I miss too. I pray America can feel this feeling again.

What i wouldn't give to have women like these singing today, their voices singing in sweet harmony,
with style and grace long past away when rap and computers came into our world, forever to stay...

+Franklin NJ I challenge anyone to give a logical reason why rap music can't be as good, to hate a genre that impactful is as bias as it is thoughtless. For the record hip-hop is one of the few genres that even keep this kind of quality music alive through sampling. Don't have different forms of creativity and free speech, all kinds are great!

I remember hearing and watching the 'Supremes" since 1964 when I was 9 years old. I loved all the members of the group and their music, and I was sad when Ms. Ross left, but loved her music afterwards. Then I heard this song and "Up the Ladder" I guess around 1970 and I was a happy white boy once more. Their music appealed to all ages and transcended race and color (and that was a big thing during those times).

This is a fantastic single. To me it has the flavour of 70s black pride, the kind of thing that we saw in lots of music of that time, eg Marvin Gaye with Abraham Martin and John and very soul versions of songs by the Four Tops eg Still Waters, Its all in the Game, etc. Soul music seemed to just spill out, whether TSOP or Stax or wherever. I think the Supremes were even better in the 70s. There was just an explosion of great soul.
