Even though I’m a hvac technician by trade for over 20 years, I’m very new to riding motorcycles. Just started riding in late 2020 and just got my second bike, a ‘21 Low Rider S in February when I traded in my ‘20 iron 883 for it. What a difference! Anyway, I’m scared to death to “mess something up” on my beautiful, new, motorcycle so it’s inspiring to see how confidently and easily you guys do the job yourselves! Seriously! If you can still get them, using a cleaners folded shirt cardboard is great for directing oil filter change overflow. You can cut it to fit around your filter while installed on bike and use the treated side up for easy flow. Wipe off and use it again & again. Just a thought.
I love this. You guys have inspired me so much. I've ordered Oil Change In A Box. Went out and got a nice low profile oil pan, got a buddy with a lift about 15 minutes down the road. I'm all in. On another note- do you guys perform ALL the work on your bikes? For example.. the 5k or 10k service, etc, that Harley recommends. Is there a checklist you guys use to keep your bike tip top? Anyway... love the videos, love what you're doing, more maintenance vids please!! Thanks guys!! :)
Thanks for the comments! We do perform most of the work on our bikes. We use their checklist and just in general always looking to see what needs the love. More vids on the way and again thank you for the support. PS Question; did you know we offer the Oil Change in a Box on our site? I know our shipping was high but we fixed that. Look at us for your next kit or anything related to your bike. If we don have something we can get it.
You should wash after oil change in my opinion. During one of mine, I saw oil splatter at the top of my rear cylinder. Wiped clean, then kept an eye on it. It was there again. Valve cover gasket leaking. Luckily covered under warranty. Definitely can find issues during oil changes.
I have a tip for you guys take an old screwdriver or a punch and punch a hole into the bottom outside of the oil filter and then do a little hole at the top for a vent put a piece of plastic bottle that you cut out and run it into your oil pan when you punch the holes oil will run down into the plastic then into the pan😎
I bought a used 2018 hd fatboy from the dealer and it did come with brand new tires but the oil looked blacker than the blackhole lol I'm changing it Nomattter what How can they sell it like that Should have checked it when I was there

I did not see that filter come off either. It must have been that they edited out the part where oil went everywhere and drained down on the floor when they pulled the filter off the housing. I do it a little differently. I leave the bike on the jiffy stand so it is leaning toward the left (like normal). Then I take a small punch and knock a hole in the bottom of the filter followed up by another hole at the top of the filter (to let it breath). Put a piece of cardboard or tin foil under the filter to catch any oil that is coming out of the punch hole. This empties the oil filter before you pull it off and dump oil everywhere.
Thanks for posting..Primary oil reservoir? I don’t own a Harley big twin but am considering it. My 1500 cc metric cruiser I use to have I serviced. The engine and trans used the same oil, so only one drain plug to take out. It had a shaft drive. I’d change the oil for that during each service.. Great video…The lift would be a must..

Thanks for watching! That should be an OEM part as the interior side of the derby over is usually the same or similar enough to the original to use the same type of gasket. Hope that helps
We put four courts in about 1/8 in the oil filter. Do that first so it has time to soak in while your doing other things. And add another 1/8-1/4 of the quart. And the rest in the Saddle Bag. Each bike is a little different do what works for you.
What is today's cost for a 3 hole oil change kit for a 2014 street glide? I called a small local guy the other day and he said 80 bucks... seems strange....I can't find the stuff to do it myself for cheaper than that.

Great video, am doing mine today , bought from dealer with dirty fluids. I think only thing you could have improved on was the exact types of fluids besides the 20W50. I was able to blow up the one bottle a bit to read but I don't think you really stated what you put in transmission, or if you did think you could have held up bottle and said this is what we put in for transmission, this for Primary, yes I could read primary but no numbers, ran video back, I never heard you say what you put in for tranny. Yes I know you can use the 20w50 in all 3,I phoned Harley dealer he said that and added the dealer uses 20w50 for all 3, but he personally uses another product in his, a heavier synthetic , 80_140 something like that. Some confusion there for me did you use 2 or 3 different fluids , I have no idea

Check with your dealership or your manual. We have M8's and four plugs. But the answer is yes and no. You will only have two plugs and generally speaking they are located in the same area as what you see in the Vid. On the outside and top area of the Cylinders on the left hand side. Hope that helps.

I have a question on the type of oil! Do you need to use 3 different bottles for the oils (transmission, primary, motor) or can you use one that says it is for all 3 on the bottle?
Depends on the bike and oil. There are oils that claim to do all 3, and we've heard mixed reviews using that for newer bikes. We just like to use what's recommended to ensure the drivetrain is healthy for miles to come 👍

Hey guys instead of the strap wrench get one of the claw type with 3 arms that grip the filter. Harley tighten like a gorilla did it. it works great...
Typically, we put a drop of oil on there which usually gets the job done. We don't usually use anti seize, but as long as it's not a glob that could make it's way into the oil, then maybe that could help if you've had issues with getting plugs out before
Very important! We change our oil every ~3k miles, and do a complete 3-hole change nearly every time. It keeps your bike running smooth, and is just another part of essential maintenance to keep you bike running for as long as possible. Yep, we do it ourselves Thanks for watching, Roofer Rob!
Let me clarify. It takes between 30-32 oz's wet. Servicing your Harley is considered wet, while if you were rebuilding it is dry it could take up to 34 oz. Hope that helps.
Hey Tom. The M8's are known for the oil pressure build up. The Vented Dip Stick help's in releasing some of that build up. We really like the Feuling Model. More detail on the pressure build up in the description on the site. Under Engine Components. Costs a little more than some of the other brands but when you see the quality of the part people then understand. It has a quick release and is an actual dipstick. Many of the other brands don't have the dipstick incorporated so you have to carry your stock dipstick with you if you need to check your oil. Hope that helps! We tend to ride 50-60,000 miles a year with plenty of long trips throughout the year, so while we may not change it every 3k miles, we tend to be closer to 3k than 5k to ensure everything is fresh and good to go before a long trip where there may be high temps and other factors. The manual does recommend every 5k miles
Oil volume can certainly vary, and with the 120R having some different components and oil pressure needs, it's probably a little different. Somewhere between 4 and 5 quarts though
What lifts are ya using? Also you stated a 9/16 for your drain plugs, im running a 2018 Road Glide, and the drain plugs are 5/8. Did this change? I also had a 2006 Heritage, it was 5/8 as well. Just curious..thank you, Safe travels! Enjoy your videos

Thank God I didn't have to remove any pipes or anything in order to get the cam cover off to be able to inspect the tensioners, inner one looks brand new still, outer has very very little wear to it, couple small pits, so I'm going to fix that one real soon, I think I'm having just as much fun wrenching as I am riding. 😂
Thanks for your time. For the life of me why do Harley guys insist on never using a torque wrench on fasteners? EVERY nut and bolt on a Harley has a torque value. You seem to take maintenance seriously ........................but..........................no torque wrench? I just don't get it. You CAN NOT "feel" correct torque values no matter how many times you did it in the past. You were doing it wrong from the start.

I never saw a HD with 9/16" drain plugs, Usually 5/8"
It's 5/8. We would need to remove the download. Use a 5/8 socket. Made a mistake, we own it.

Didn't mention T27 bit for the derby cover screws. Basic oil change and makes it look easy.

4.5 quarts isn’t too much? My 114 takes about 4. It’s measures half the dip stick.

For the kits that we run, the full 3-hole kit is about 100 bucks. Either he's running a tight margin or using sub-par oil, who knows🤔

Typically, we put a drop of oil on there which usually gets the job done. We don't usually use anti seize, but as long as it's not a glob that could make it's way into the oil, then maybe that could help if you've had issues with getting plugs out before

How important is purging your oils and do y'all do that?
Very important! We change our oil every ~3k miles, and do a complete 3-hole change nearly every time. It keeps your bike running smooth, and is just another part of essential maintenance to keep you bike running for as long as possible. Yep, we do it ourselves

Let me clarify. It takes between 30-32 oz's wet. Servicing your Harley is considered wet, while if you were rebuilding it is dry it could take up to 34 oz. Hope that helps.

why do you run the vented oil dip stick?
Hey Tom. The M8's are known for the oil pressure build up. The Vented Dip Stick help's in releasing some of that build up. We really like the Feuling Model. More detail on the pressure build up in the description on the site. Under Engine Components. Costs a little more than some of the other brands but when you see the quality of the part people then understand. It has a quick release and is an actual dipstick. Many of the other brands don't have the dipstick incorporated so you have to carry your stock dipstick with you if you need to check your oil. Hope that helps! We tend to ride 50-60,000 miles a year with plenty of long trips throughout the year, so while we may not change it every 3k miles, we tend to be closer to 3k than 5k to ensure everything is fresh and good to go before a long trip where there may be high temps and other factors. The manual does recommend every 5k miles
Is it the same for a free wheeler?
It should be. Make sure to double check your manual for oil volumes👍

Oil volume can certainly vary, and with the 120R having some different components and oil pressure needs, it's probably a little different. Somewhere between 4 and 5 quarts though
"W" in 20W50 doesn't stand for "weight" it stands for "winter"

What lifts are ya using? Also you stated a 9/16 for your drain plugs, im running a 2018 Road Glide, and the drain plugs are 5/8. Did this change? I also had a 2006 Heritage, it was 5/8 as well. Just curious..thank you,

@@2LaneLife well, I found a very itty-bitty piece (just one) of yellowish plastic.
Thank God I didn't have to remove any pipes or anything in order to get the cam cover off to be able to inspect the tensioners, inner one looks brand new still, outer has very very little wear to it, couple small pits, so I'm going to fix that one real soon, I think I'm having just as much fun wrenching as I am riding. 😂

Thanks for your time. For the life of me why do Harley guys insist on never using a torque wrench on fasteners? EVERY nut and bolt on a Harley has a torque value. You seem to take maintenance seriously ........................but..........................no torque wrench? I just don't get it. You CAN NOT "feel" correct torque values no matter how many times you did it in the past. You were doing it wrong from the start.
