@John Maxwell-everybody likes different oils but what test have they done on Harley engines or transmissions? Harley tests their oils on Harley components. I'm pretty sure they got together with their oil supplier to find the best additives for their bikes, especially if they're putting a warranty on their products.
Managed to ride my Sportster maybe 5 miles at fwy speed without oil. Got oil back in it, and it's been running fine ever since. Maybe the fact that I use mobil 1 synthetic helped a bit, I figure most motors would have seized by tthat point.. @@CSIS-Spy
Hey John, me and my Dad we just run full synthetic, in all three... he's got 77,000 on his bike.. I got about 37,000 on my bike.. I got a 05 Wide Glide and my dad's got an 05 Fatboy... never had any problems except for the cam chain tensioners we had them replaced.. but that wasn't due to the oil.. I do my own service.. thanks for your cool videos!
That’s exactly what I run, Syn 3 20w-50 in the engine and HD Gear Oil 80-140 in the primary and transmission! Thank you for your content John, keep up the good work!
Hey John. Love your videos. I have heard the arguments against putting Amsoil in all 3 holes before. What gave me the confidence to put it in the gear box is that Amsoil posts all their oil test sheets right on their website. I took some time and looked at their shock tests, breakdown tests, and other tests between their synthetic engine oil and their gear and tranny oils. The results of the tests showed that the engine oil performed at or better than the gear specific oil. That's why I imagine that they can guarantee their oil safe for all three holes. Understanding that they have no liability in making that claim, I can appreciate the scientific method they used to come to that conclusion. As always, YMMV. Also, you spoke about convenience. With the SE110 motor, it takes exactly 6qts if you add up all three holes. If you get 3 different oils, you wind up with a little left over in one jug and needing to buy a whole other quart to cover a couple of extra ounces needed for one of the gear boxes. Using the same oil for all three holes makes it very convenient when ordering my oil change kits. Harley would DEFINITELY convert me if they made the gear oils in quantities that actually matched the capacities of the cases they were being poured into.
I'm a 69 yr old on an 06 1200 Sporty. I use Mobil 1 20/50 syn in engine and trying Spectro in trans, that was recommended by a local bike shop, since I installed a 9 disk Barnett clutch. Shifts pretty smooth.
"pick an oil that lets you sleep at night"...........lol, "have oil in your bike, that most important".........:-) great video, really enjoyed the dead pan delivery....
John. I'm an auto tech 35 yrs experience , learning about harley.i have an odd story. My 98 flats Evo was leaking at the front jug base gasket when I bought it. I was told run it for a bit then pull it apart if it got worse. I changed the oil installed Mobil 1 syn 20-50 v- twin. The leak stopped!!! I've ran it about 5k no leak I was shocked but hey I'll take it
i changed from Rotella to Mobile 1 in my semi's and ran 500k farther before rebuild. i even run it in my puckup & lawn mower now. Mobile 1 Vtwin is the best i believe in my wideglide anyway.
I am very curious about your experience (jug base gasket leak). I just bought a '76 FLH which is doing the exact same thing, and was told to run it until next winter and then replace the base gasket. My "inside" oil pump gasket is also leaking. I was told to run NOTHING but straight 60 weight oil in the engine & trans. So you went with Mobil 1 syn 20-50 v-twin huh? I wonder if it would stop MY oil leaks too. Sounds MUCH easier than ripping off the jugs, and doing an R&R on the oil pump..... Hmmmmmmmmmm
I have found that Amsoil works the best in my sportster 1200 which I have own for 18 years. Runs cooler than the HD synthetic. 100 degree day has never been over 200 degrees in oil tank. Engine probably about 220 to 230 temperature. I do all my own maintenance including changing the tires. Amsoil is shipped to your door. Works for me.
I have an 883 Sportster with 350,000 Mi on it I used regular Harley Oil I change the oil twice a year and I change the filter in every other shot two up in August in Florida my oil temperature rarely gets above 200 degrees
Thanks for covering "the basics". There are sexier things to cover, upgrades & such, but it never hurts to revisit the fundamentals. Timely, as well, as I am about to service my FXDC. Thanks, John. Excellent, as always.
Oh forgot to tell you. My 1997-Sportster 1200 is Nugget yellow and black . I sold it like a big dummy to a friend of mine in Pittsburgh..Steeler colors...lol..he's still running the bike with Valvoline synthetic..300,000 miles and never has had the motor worked on except tires and cluttches.. not bad!!!!!!!
I agree about the Syn3. I switched to it from the Harley 20/50 on my Sportster 48. Within 50 miles I was having valve chatter (I never had) when running thru the gears. Went back to the local Harley dealer...same one where the parts guy told me to switch. The mechanic I saw so NO, don't put Syn. in a Sportster, stick with dino. oil. So now I'm running straight HD 50 wt.. Bought the Bike new in 2014, now it is 5 years old with 10,000 on it. Never have had a problem with it. I live and ride in Arizona where its in the 110-115 (f) degree range now. This is my 3rd. Sportster since 1964...I keep them a LONG time.
That's funny, Tom- My dealer said, "Absolutely not!" to synthetic oil in my '86 (first year Evo) Sportster. "It's too slippery," he said which, I gotta tell ya, got my red flags a-raisin'. Oil...can be too...slippery? Anyway, I switched to full synthetic and the bike LOVED it. I live in Florida where it gets not, but not Arizona-hot ;)
Agreed 100% Straight 50 weight high zinc formulated conventional racing oil in my Sportster engine. I also run F type transmission fluid in the Primary/transmission in my 07 Sportster with 70k+ miles on it still running strong.
@@ThatBobGuy850 haha typical stealership buy our expensive snake oil bs lines. Great choice on the synthetic I bet that 86 is still running strong. I love the Sportster because they run forever, easy to maintain, plenty fast, reliable, and they will down dirt bike trails if necessary. I wont part with my Sportster it is my favorite of my bikes always will be.
John - you did an excellent job touting the best oil (for you) is whatever is the most convenient. As for me, I don’t spend $32K+ for my Harley only to skimp on a synthetic BLEND fluid because it says H-D on the bottle. Amsoil all the way for my baby!!
Thank you! I ran Amsoil in 2006 Heritage for 14 years, no issues. Just bought a 2018 Road Glide, Great information, Glad HD has stepped their game up. Keep up the good work!
Yep, lots of good options out there, lots of opinions, and lots of experts. For my twin-cam I use Mobil1 V-Twin full synthetic in all three holes. It is highly rated by both studies and users, it is readily available across the country, it is formulated for use in all 3 holes, and it is inexpensive - I pay 9 bucks and change per quart. Works for me.
Im a mechanic and I 100% agree with you use what is convenient when it comes to oil. I usually just order mine through one of my shops suppliers because where i work we dont work on motorcycles.
Mob 1 20/50 full syn actually made a noticeable difference in eng noise my metric bikes. Love the sound of that post-change warm-up with the new lube. My first HD in 53 years is a 2019 RG. Going with Mob 1 again. It's convenient and with some CBD (in me, not the bike) I should sleep like the, well you know. Enjoyed the vid. Thanks
Been running Lucas Oil for the last few years in my Ultra Classic and it does the job and runs a little cooler and is Synthetic. Trans shifts a bit easier also.
Good tips. 40 plus years of HD ownership. I don't run engine oil in the transmission. I like the synthetics for the engine. Most important, change oil when recommended. Cheap clean oil is better than expensive dirty oil.
just curious what do you run in your transmission synthetic oil, or gear oil? currently I'm just running Harley synthetic oil the same for all 3 holes n change the oil 3 times or more a year to keep it clean as possible, but now rethinking n running gear oil in the transmission after watching this , it just makes sense to me, but keeping it simple n clean and consitent has worked best for me over the years. I just don't have the 40 yrs of experience u have. so I value your input brother , thank you!
@@les6556 I,ve got a 1997 Evo which I,ve been running Mobile 1 Syn for the past 12 yrs and she runs great , bloody expensive though , unfortunately she has now picked up a small oil leak under the primary and i can,t tell where the hell it,s coming from cause the oil is the same colour in all three holes .
Great video and nice job explaining that "what ever makes you sleep at night" is what you should run. As a retired automotive instructor I have given the oil brand speech to hundreds of high school students and I agree with everything you discussed. I have been running Syn3 in all 3 holes since my first touring bike in 2003. NEVER had an oil related issue but I think I will switch to the new gear oil from the motor company next trans change. Yes, everyone will have a reason to run their favorite oil but you are correct, it is more important to have oil in the bike, the brand is secondary. One addition is that the oil should "meet or exceed manufactures specifications". To many people run an oil that does not meet the specifications and then feel there was something wrong with the oil when it was not rated to do the job asked of it. Keep up the good work John!
Ever since I bought my Harley all I use is Harley synthetic. Right after the first thousand miles I changed all of the fluids to Harley synthetics. That's all I have ever used. I take excellent care of my bike. Even my local dealership where I buy my parts have told me that I did not need to change my oil as much as I was. They told me since my bike was still under warranty I did not have nothing to fear by waiting longer to change my oil. I explained to them I wasn't going to sit around all summer waiting for the dealership to replace my engine. On one occasion I had changed my oil on a Saturday and the following Saturday I had taken my bike for a long ride. Coming back there was a huge accident and on this stretch of road you have to stay on it until you get across the bridge. It was a hot August day and my engine was so hot that it was burning me through my jeans. The oil temperature was 300°. I had to put the bike on the shoulder and get off of it. Finally the road opened up and once I was back up the speed everything went back to normal. As soon as I was back on the other side of the bridge I went straight to Harley. Everyone there knows me I have been using the same dealership for years. So I went inside bought everything to do another oil change and that's when the parts guy asked me what happened to the stuff you got last week. I told him what had happened and he went on to tell me that I didn't need to change the oil again that it was synthetic and it's made for that heating cycle. He did not persuade me enough not to change my mind so I got everything I needed. When I drain all of the fluids they all still look brand new. Even though the fluids looked clean I still had no problem with my decision to change it again. Every year when we come back from Daytona from bike week I change all my fluids before riding season back home. Enjoyed your video look forward to watching more of them.
I run AMSOIL and made my bike shift a lot smoother plus it eliminated the surge to move in gear, made it a lot quieter, I was so impressed by this oil I became a dealer. If you really wanna see the difference go watch the videos comparing different oils. The AMSOIL came out on top on each test against all oils. Plus I found out that the Harley oil is made by Sunoco, not a very reputable oil in my opinion.
Then why isn’t it ever supported by and sold by Parts Unlimited, Tucker Rocky, Western PowerSports etc? Why is the only real profit going to the guy who sells it, like you, not the dealer at .50 CEnts profit per bottle? It makes Zero sense to sell that oil at your store.
ART, I also ride a shovelhead, just inherited my uncles 1981 flh80,it has only 409 miles on it,i know nothing about it,my uncle bought it new and had disc surgery and can't ride at all,it sit in the shop for years,i've replaced all the valve springs and now I'm ready to ride,do you use 50 weight in the summer or cooler months,is 60 for summer only, thanks, names gary
I've been riding my 1983 FXDG doe 23 years. I use straight 50wt in crankcase and BelRay in trans. (Belt primary ) Go Willy "G" !!! Had a 76 FX before that ran straight weight in that until I totaled it. Thank You for a no nonsense fideo without stupid music!
I can attest to the protection provided by Amsoil. But make certain it is the variety made for air cooled engines. It can handle the higher heat better. My 2000 wide glide now has 85,000 miles and a recent check of the cam tensioners showed they are only half worn down. I plan to replace them just to be safe but that tells me the Amsoil is doing an amazing job of lubricating the chain and the tensioners.
Just did a 3 hole oil change on my Harley and a friend's bike. I also went with the Harley 80W 140 gear oil for my transmission. I used the synthetic 20W 50 in the primary same for the engine. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
2012 Fat Bob Stage II Barnett Scorpion Clutch I live in Phoenix and have run Mobil 1 in all holes for 3 years without issue. I ran Amz Oil & Redline before that. Barnett actually recommended Mobil 1 (as well as a couple others) when running that clutch.
I run Syn-3 in all my Harley’s and have not had any engine, trans or primary problems at all. My 06 Softail standard just went through a major up grade on rims, forks, chrome, paint, bars etc. I also put a 95 Screaming Eagle kit in it with Dunn ported and polished heads. The bike had 112,000 miles on it with Syn-3. When I pulled it down it was like brand new inside, everything was clean and fresh looking, did not find any wear on cams, rockers, lifters, oil pump or any other items. Even the rocker shafts showed no wear, made me a believer in Syn-3, I change it at 4000 to 5000 miles all the time. I don’t care that I spend a little more on oil because I change it more often then I should, I never had to do anything inside because something went bad do to wear from lack of lube or dirty oil.
Fantastic video. So many great tips. The reason I DO NOT run HD oil in my wife’s HD is that I always carry a quart of oil in my panniers of my BMW. I refuse to put HD sacreligous oil in my Beemer/GS but I want to carry the same oil for both our bikes. It’s the same reason I run Rotella in both my truck and my Honda. Because it’s there. Great stuff bud. Keep up the good work.
John, I really appreciate your videos! I have my HD since 2015 (Road Glide Special) and I have never been a wrench turning guy. Your videos make it easy to tackle some of the "easy" maintenance. Your videos are informative AND fun to watch!! Keep them coming!! THANK YOU!!
Hey there. Had a tech tell me that the synthetic oils exaggerated any issues with M8’s . I know you have heard all the talk. Also all the old timers talked up Bel Ray for the transmission. I tried it. Seems to shift better. Didn’t stop the transfer to primary. Then by accident the service rep at my local dealership instructed the Mechanic that there was supposed to be Bel Ray primary oil in the primary. Well that made a big difference in how things shifted when the bike was cold (first start up of the day) Been using those since . Shared info with my riding buddies. The experience the same . I know by the time I comment you have your own place . But hope you still look back on your older videos.
So John, now that we know HD`s syn gear oil is 80w-140, I`m guessing their formula+ is 80w-140 also? As for the synthetic motor oil, the correct amount, weight and changing at the recommended intervals is more important than what brand you use
good vids...I live in So Cal...always had great luck with Mobil 1 20 50 syn...got 90K trouble free miles on my 2003 HD police road king while escorting funerals ...which is very hard hot service, especially in the summer. It Never used any oil of left me anywhere..sold it to my best friend at 90K..he running it today...Only thing I ever did was change the cam tensioner ONCE, which it didn't even need. Mobil ALWAYS ranks either at the top of near the top in all the youtube tests I ever seen
Well, here's what I can share on the topic from my personal experience: running Redline Racing's 20w50 V twin oil has ALWAYS made my bikes run 10-12 degrees cooler, as per temp gun on the heads. It has also ALWAYS quieted some of the mechanical noises down. So, I'm not saying it's the best oil ever, but it's pretty clear too me that it's working some kinda magic. It's expensive as hell, but for less heat and less noise (therefore one would assume better lubrication and less friction)? I'll spend the extra $$$
Hey bud, my plan is ride down to bike week on Saturday the 10th. If you are riding that day it would be cool to ride with a celeb. Let me know if you want another in your group. In case you didn’t know you guys have done an amazing job making my bike the bad ass machine it is.
I love Ams oil. Started running it in 2005 on my motocross bikes. Never had any troubles. Eventually started running it in my rockets, my sportsters and now I run it in my duramax. I support amsoil all the way. 👍. Now Johns really got me wanting a new heritage and if I do get one, guess what I'll run in it. 😉. That heritage is sexy 🤤🤤🤤🤤
For the last couple of years I've been running 20/50 Maxima V Twin Synthetic racing oil in crankcase, Maxima V Twin 80/90 in Trans and Maxima V Twin in primary. 2008 Fatbob. I'm no expert, but all seems good. I subscribed to your videos. Great job and advice.
Great video. Straight and to the point. My brother has been a Master Harley Technician for the last 16 years and would agree 100% with you on the "all three holes" debate. You should NEVER use engine oil in your transmission. Period. There are specific gear oils for a reason. Nice work and keep the videos coming 🤘
I have run it in my 2003 Anniversary Electra Glide for 20 years with no problems! Convenience of using the same product and not buying 3! Harley does not make oil, Amsoil does they were first in synthetic oil! I use that shit in everything I own, no problems! No breakdowns on my vehicles and they run good and clean! 10k miles between oil changes! Also my bike has never leaked oil as some declare about Harleys!
I have run Mobil 1 5-40 Turbo Diesel oil in my last 5 bikes and well over 300,000 miles. I ride in the Palm Springs area where temperature runs well over 100 degrees and in Reno where I have ridden in 30 to 40 degree weather. The light weight works fine in all weather conditions.
Did a 3 hole service on my buddies 02 NightTrain while I put Apes on it and replaced his chain tensioners... Used RedLine's complete kit.... I was impressed on how smooth the transmission shifted and how smooth and quiet the engine ran. I'll be switching to the RedLine kit for my 02 Fatboy as well after seeing the results with his.
I just got the 5K mile service for my 16FLSS at my local HDD. Full Synthetic HD oil. Hell ya I sleep better at night John. Like you said made by Harley for Harleys what can be better in that! Thanks for making these cool info videos keep them coming. And enjoy your ride to Daytona. 👊🏼😎
I got my first 2002 Twin cam FLSTC I have only owned Fatheads Panheads and Shovels. This bike I am not sure what the oil level is. I read in a newer manual to check the oil with the bike level and I saw in an old manual to check the oil on the kick stands. I have a 2001 road king too and it is easy to check the oil in it. I am sorry I bought um I should have looked for a good Evo.
For me it's Lucas 20-50 full synthetic in the crankcase, Lucas full synthetic 75-140 in the trans, and Lucas primary chain oil in the obvious reservoir. Good tip, pick an oil and stick with it, probably not a good idea to switch between brands all of the time.
How long will oil last in the original unopened container. I have a bunch of Harley straight 50 weight I got back in the early 90's when a local bike shop closed so is it still good. I use it in a 72 H FLH but I have not used this old oil because I had it stored in a air conditioned area and forgot I had it./ I have 22 quarts. I been using in in my riding lawn mower.
So here is a data point. I have a 2017 MW8 Road Glide Ultra 42K miles. NH owner so limited winter riding. I have been running Syn3 in all three holes since the first oil change. Motor is running great, bike shifts just right, and clutch feel is still awesome.
I’ve been very pleased with Shaffer’s fluids, but I like the fact that the Motor Company offers a very good gear oil as an option for those who don’t run synthetic. Like he says, the most important part is that there’s actually oil in the bike.
The Bottle of HD Branded Oil that John Held up is Synthetic. I had to play the video at 25% speed in order to pause it on the frame 80W-140 Synthetic ..
Dude, I dislike Harleys for their noise (my personal preference, everyone else is entitled to their love of Harleys) but you have so much personality, I couldnt help watching.
I live 85 miles from the nearest Harley dealer, and 40 miles from the nearest Walmart. I run Amsoil V-Twin because I can get it at the local auto parts store (and Ive been running it in my bikes for years.)
JMHO, I use Schaffer’s 20/50 V-Twin racing oil in the engine. Harleys primary and transmission. Never had a problem. Depending on riding, I change primary and transmission once a year in late fall and engine oil as needed. Used to run Mobil 1, 15/50 but they changed the formula a few years back. I buy the Schaffer’s by the case. Works out to $7.50 a qt.
I have tried all oils over the years in my 80ci evo and have come to use now JOE GIBBS HR1 15w50 racing oil with extreme high zinc, it has completely quited my engines top end. In trans i use 75w140 valvoline synth gear oil and primary i use redline chaincase oil. Best combination!, my engine is dead quiet my trans shifts to neutral super easy and the clutch engages smoothly.
Thanks John, 03 Fatboy and 07 Street Bob, Mobil One V-Twin in the engine, Redline Red Shockproof for Transmission and Redline Primary for you guessed it the Primary.
Thanks John, really great info! I ride a 2010 FLHTK and I normally take it to the dealership for service. I am looking to do my own service in the future, and appreciate the insight.
'06 FLSTF, 41k, 97" and been running Mobil 1 15-50 since its 1st oil change. Zero engine issues. I also like Redline MTL in the trans, and i run Yamaha 10w-40 in the primary. I prefer "wet clutch" type lubes for the primary. Im not a HD Fanboy when it comes to lubes. I run what i trust from over 34 years of riding / wrenching my own bikes. BTW, im not a HD only fanboy , i own 6 different bikes, including metrics.
Zen, I literally told you to run whatever the hell you want. No 2 bikes have the same location for oil drain plugs. It’s in the service manual for your model, though. The oil filter. You need help finding the oil filter? It is in the worst, most obvious place ever on every model other than the V-Rod for the last 30 years....
@@TheHarleyTech ----On a 2019 M8 engine do you like to use the Harley 80-140 synthetic gear over the Harley synthetic 20-50 oil if you had an M8 engine?
Changed the oils in My 2003 1200 Sporster a few days ago ! I always use Harley Oils ! This time I used the 80 w 140 gear oil in the primary ! Wow ! I'm sold ! Shifts easier and cut down on the chatter and goes into neutral allot easier now ! Thought I may need to adjust the chain but with only 10'000 miles on it , it was right where it was supposed to be ! My Dad always said change that oil before its due and that engine will last longer then You ! He worked for Shell Oil many years ago . I think He was a Backyard Pitchman ! LOL
I run Amsoil 20-50 V-Twin oil in all 3 holes of my 2008 FXSTSSE2 and have for the past 25,000 miles. I also pop the oil return line back to the oil tank and run the engine until clean oil comes out every tine i do an oil change
I fill the oil tank, pop the return like and start it. Run it into a clear container until it’s flowing clean oil. Takes about an extra quart to do a change but it’s well worth it.
Great content as always John, I have a 99 FLHT that I run redline in all holes and change at 2500 being in the high desert of California and road temps over 130 at times it tends to break down quicker.
I was told by my H-D dealer that they put Redline in all New bikes after the break-in. So that’s what I have done my changes with. Who knows but I am with you, just make sure it’s got oil. 👍 Hope to make it down to meet up with your group for the trip to Paris this year. 18 Fatboy 124
John, You didn’t mention anything about the primary cover gasket. Are you replacing it every time you remove the primary cover? Also, thanks for the videos, much appreciated.
I’m running the Harley oil on all three holes , but next time around I’m going to use the gear oil. Last pile change I used the same for all three holes.
I have been running AMSOIL for nearly 40 years (yes, AMSOIL was The FIRST synthetic oil!!) so I run the AMSOIL V-Twin Engine Oil, Primary Fluid and V-Twin Transmission Fluid, along with an AMSOIL EaOM134 oil filter in my 2017 Road Glide Ultra.
Have always used Harley 20/50's in my 2000 Dyna, and formula+ for gear box and primary. I also add a Slick 50 gear box treatment at every gear box change ,it makes my gear box smooth with no clunky changes, at nearly 70,000 miles I am happy with my oil choices. Thanks for vid.👍🏍🏍🏍🏍👊
I've been using Mobil 1 v-twin engine motor oil for a long time and it has been treating my motorcycles very well and for half the price of the Harley oil. And you can buy Mobil 1 V-Twin oil anywhere in case you get low and you need to top off. remember Walmart's open 24/7 and so are some auto parts stores and they all sell Mobil 1 V-Twin and from what I was told by some people and a video I saw it's actually better oil than the Harley oil. As far as the gear and primary oil goes I get that from Harley. Thank you anyways for sharing your video.
The biggest and most impressive reduction in Temp I ever seen was when I switched from Syn3, to Amsoil 15-60 Synthetic. I had a LowRiderS, 110, and we all know that Engine ran Super hot. The Amsoil, reduced it at least 15 Degrees, just by simple comparison from my Digi temp/Dipstick. After the break in, I’ll never use anything else on my new FXDR but Amsoil. 👍🇺🇸
Clean oil is the best oil. People who neglect giving their bike fresh oil will pay in the long run.... My 99 RK (first year TC) went over 300,000 on the original engine with oil changes every 5,000 miles. That engine only got Castrol 20/50. My Panhead runs straight 60w just to quiet the top end. My 2017 RGU runs 20/50 Mobil One V-Twin because I can get it right down the street. I do run Lucas primary lube and 75/90 in the trans for gear lube. Again because I can get them down the street. Fresh oil is the best oil!
I have a 2002 ultra with the 95 ci conversion I ran syn3 for 30,000 miles and had to rebuild engine because flywheel bearings got out of spec , I have run amsoil ever since with gear oil 75_90 in trans and now I have 90,000 miles on it and she still running like a beast .
Ahhhh, glad to hear someone make sense. I sell oil in a bike shop and mostly this is what I also say. As long as you can find an oil that's from a reputable brand or seller, and the oil is made for your purpose, and you're running the correct amount of clean oil, go for it. Stressing out over BelRay vs Motorex vs Castrol vs Amsoil etc is gonna give you a heartburn. Don't, however, put long life car oils in there esp. if you have a wet clutch. That's going to be possibly really expensive. All that said: Of course more expensive synthetic oils *are* better. Conspiracy theories in a *very* contested market are just silly. We can look at dozens of videos and reports showing you that they *do* last better. Don't believe the myths that "synthetics make your bike leak" or "synthetic makes your clutch slip" and whatever. What remains for you as a buyer and user to decide is how much is that better oil worth to you and what can you afford.
@@NAT-rd8fl lol its my bike and my story so it's a MINOTAUR! But thanks. Tell your own story/joke and spell it how you want lol clearly at least 73 people knew what i ment
Ran Redline in my dyna for a week. It was garbage, loud as hell. Went back to H-D fluids. Did have luck running the Drag Specialties primary oil in my Sportster. Also, that primary funnel makes adding oil way easier than using a funnel.
I bought my first Evo in 85. Running a straight was definitely a no-no. That being said I live in Canada. I used ask service techs about running synthetic. I was told no, to slippery. After a while I went and had my top end cleaned up. Then I started using Amsoil. I will never go back to fossil. Harley doesn't make any oil. They tender it out to the lowest bidder, so essentially the cheapest synthetic you can find is your SYN3. I have had people and read that SYN3 was the junkiest oil. Too thin and a lot of noise. They went to another brand of synthetic. I found it underhanded that Harley would say don't use synthetic till they started marketing their own crap brand.
"I was told no, to slippery." - bullcrap, tell them to educate themselves. " Then I started using Amsoil." - 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin is PAO based, real synthetic. "They tender it out to the lowest bidder" - same with Honda GN, Yamalube and others. And they have different suppliers in different markets. Nothing special, everybody does that.

My Harley is a 2015 Softail Slim with the 103B twin cam engine. Now, with 30,000 miles, I have discovered that "BelRay 80W transmission oil" works best in the chain case. BelRay says it is "Created for all motorcycle transmissions equipped with wet clutches". I get the best smooth and complete clutch engagement and disengagement of any oil I have used, especially in cold whether when you have to rock the bike for and aft to break loose the clutch plates. I believe the product is of the GL3 speck. I am using MasterPro full synthetic 75W140, speck GL5, in the gear case. I get easy shifting and minimal "Clunk" between each gear. The engine oil tank takes 3 quarts of Harley "Syn3, 20W50" and I use the "K&N" brand oil filters. The GL5 gear oil and the K&N oil filters are in O'Reilly Auto Store locations in my area. The BelRay 80W comes from a scooter shop and the Syn3 comes from the Harley dealer.
I have a CVO. I run Harley Davidson syn3 20w50 in engine, primary, and transmission. That is what the engineers designed it to run on so why would I change it.
Mechanic 50 + years. Engine lube and gear lube require different lubrication qualities. Those "unique" oil holes in the Twin Cam pistons have been used by Cummins for YEARS. With pistons you have up and down movement with the rings making contact with the cylinder walls, in the gear box you have a "squishing" effect that varies between say hypoid and amboid gears vs. Helix cut gears. I use Mobil 1 in the primary and engine, and Amsoil Shockproof in the gearbox. Remember; HD is not an oil manufacturer.
Harley has put so many mistakes out of the factory and on the road , that the bikers FIX , then about 10 yrs later the factory will follow with the biker repair......just a few factory mistakes but not even close to all of them....they used to run motor oil through the Clutch / primary chain side then back through the motor oil as a continuous cycle of picking up debris in from clutch plates and miniscule slivers from primary chain and back into motor over and over!! Used to put only one bolt to hold ex pipe to the head !! their carburetors were not braced good enough to maintain the proper seal from intake to head spigot........I ain't gonna waste no more time on this BS .....these new ones are better B U T ....they got their issues, big time !!!
keith s. Every bike, car and plane has the potential of having a mechanical breakdown. If you hate Harley’s don’t own one. Your loss. Some of us like/ love our. Never had issues. I ride about 30k a year. So sit on your couch and act like you know everything.
I have run Red-line V-Twin and Amsoil V-Twin in all thee holes with four different Harley's over two hundred twenty thousand miles with no problems. Always used OE oil filters. I have never had to replace a clutch or primary chain doing that either. I am going to be using Amsoil 75-140 extreme gear in the trans of my bikes now because I closed my auto repair shop and retired and have some left over so the price is right. I would not have any issue running Harley oil or Mobil 1 as well. My Harley dealer is 15 miles away and Amsoil can be drop shipped at my doorstep. There is a very good independent shop near me that uses and recommends Mobil 1 so there you go!
Steven Wallace I do the exact same! I tried HD Syn and was getting a lot of engine noise and shifting noise. Did some research and changed to Amsoil; viola, no more noise! Recommend Amsoil hands down. Anyone disagrees, do the research.
In my 40 years of riding I have found you can use any properly rated oil as long as it is changed regularly with a new filter also. Only hard and fast rule I follow is if it has synthetic run only synthetic and use same brand if it has dino oil use dino oil , they should not be mixed unless it is an emergency where you are stuck somewhere but change it out asap when home.
Amazon basics 20-50 works great, price is right and it’s SN plus. Change every 3000 miles. Amazon anti ware additives are about 1500ppm on par with everyone else, redline is about 2900ppm but if your not racing no point in spending $19 for one quart.
You did not replace the O-rings on each plug. Tsk tsk. I use Amsoil exclusively. 20/50 in the engine and primary, Severe Gear 75w-90 in the transmission. Amsoil now has three oil kits - one for engine, one for primary and one for the transmission (same as Severe Gear 75w-90 but rebranded). Become a prefered customer and buy at wholesale prices. Amsoil also has excellent filters in black and chrome. Amsoil also has gasoline treatments. No, I am not a dealer, just a steady valued customer.
By becoming a Preferred Customer you can save 25% plus other benefits. www.amsoil.com/newsstand/other/articles/become-an-amsoil-preferred-customer/?ZO=5904350 These are the Amsoil products I use in my 14' SGS. www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/motorcycle/?=ZO5904350
Always had Pans and Shovels and didn't know much about synthetic oil or changing oil in three different places until I got a twin cam. This was helpful and straight foreword.
With over 50 years of riding under my belt, I have run engines with and without oil. I have to agree with John, with oil is better :)
😂
How long will an air-cooled VTwin last without oil? Lets me a UA-cam video
Jason Sousa you donate the bike bro 😂
Scams oil
I've ran it about 5k no leak I was shocked but hey I'll take it
You gotta love that EVO engine!
i changed from Rotella to Mobile 1 in my semi's and ran 500k farther before rebuild. i even run it in my puckup & lawn mower now. Mobile 1 Vtwin is the best i believe in my wideglide anyway.
I don't use ANYTHING but Mobil 1 in both my HD Screaming Eagle and my personal vehicles. Mobil 1 is awesome.
Hmmmmmmmmmm
@@tommydemis9094 not sure why it stopped I assume the oil was way past time to change. I'm preparing to fix it but not unless it comes back lol
I find oil very sexy 😉😘
I put the new primary and transmission synthetic oil in, and I feel they perform excellent. Finding neutral when it’s hot out is MUCH easier!!
Here too, I have roughly 500K engine miles on Mobile FS V twin with 3 bikes and no engine problems yet..
I use it in my new LowRider St and in my Ducati. It’s at Walmart it’s easy to get.
@@AmericanPatriot-cw9xe I myself run Mobil-1 in the engine and primary. I use Amsoil in the transmission.

Just bought my first HD, got me an '07FLSTF & this video was decent help with how to go about the fluid change & what to use. Thanks, my dude.
I used screaming eagle syn3 on all three oils yesterday. Bike is running like a banshee. So smooth and kicking ass !!!!
Since I ride a Shovelhead, I use a straight oil. 50 to 60 weight. I like your videos and subbed. I am 66 and still riding my 83 FXWG.
I use to use 60 all year long. When I got back to Washington in 92 used it still. The Harley shop stopped carrying it. So went 50. Now back to 60.
I will use it to then, thanks for the info art, looking forward to riding this old bike,i haven't rode in years, but I started early, thanks again
Straight 70 aircraft oil...79 shovel.
I've been riding my 1983 FXDG doe 23 years. I use straight 50wt in crankcase and BelRay in trans. (Belt primary ) Go Willy "G" !!! Had a 76 FX before that ran straight weight in that until I totaled it. Thank You for a no nonsense fideo without stupid music!
yeh I buy it at Harley too. plus our dealer gives veterans 10% off so that is nice. wonder if all dealerships do that.
My personal blend: Mobil 1 v-twin 20w50 in the engine and clutch, Redline in the transmission.
i want my clutch dry
That's my choice too.
Thank you. I am new to Harley. But this is exactly what I did on my first fluid change. I could not see putting engine oil in a gearbox.
Just did a 3 hole oil change on my Harley and a friend's bike. I also went with the Harley 80W 140 gear oil for my transmission. I used the synthetic 20W 50 in the primary same for the engine. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
“The most important thing is that the engine have oil in it”
Yes Sir it makes lots of sense,
I like that.
And don't forget to keep plenty of air in the air cleaner.
You will be AMAZED at how many lazy/dumb MF'rs DO NOT check thier oil level every 1000 miles!

I change my NightTrain oil every spring. May be less than 5000 miles, but clean oil keeps it happy.
Every 3500
Then by accident the service rep at my local dealership instructed the
Mechanic that there was supposed to be Bel Ray primary oil in the primary. Well that made a big difference in how things shifted when the bike was cold (first start up of the day)
Been using those since .
Formula + is approximately 90 weight
what about is castrol 80w90? is good???
good vids...I live in So Cal...always had great luck with Mobil 1 20 50 syn...got 90K trouble free miles on my 2003 HD police road king while escorting funerals ...which is very hard hot service, especially in the summer.
OMG! Not the oil debate!! 😳
Back in the shop...ahhhhhhh.
I use Mobil 1. That said, change your oil often. Oil is cheap.
Agreed 100% change often its cheap insurance.
Amsoil 20/50 and I sleep well
Thank you, I've been curious of that black silvery crap stuck to my drain plug, now I'm not so much..

Mobil v twin 20-50 synthetic in the engine and BelRay in the trans and primary. Been great so far!
Best Harley Oil Change Video, Ever , I' appreciated You honesty and straight forward video.
I use Amsoil in my bikes. My HD dealership stock multiple brands, all of which are available to purchase in multiple quantities.
Do you use amsoil 20x50 in the primary and transmission as well?
@@rednkitaln Whatever the service manual says....I replace with Amsoil
My FXDLS plows through SYN3. Switched over to Amsoil and haven't looked back.
100% synthetic is the only way to go. Designed for a purpose, rather than being dug out of the ground. Even the lawn mower gets it.
@Mike Greer - It burns it up and requires more oil to be added between changes
I changed to Amsoil too. Better oil pressure and way less noisy.
Changing my oil for the first time.
Going to drain all three holes.
Thanks in advance your video seems to cover the entire process.
I put mobile 1 20w50 in my sportster both holes an runs just fine
Changed the oils in My 2003 1200 Sporster a few days ago ! I always use Harley Oils ! This time I used the 80 w 140 gear oil in the primary ! Wow ! I'm sold ! Shifts easier and cut down on the chatter and goes into neutral allot easier now ! Thought I may need to adjust the chain but with only 10'000 miles on it , it was right where it was supposed to be ! My Dad always said change that oil before its due and that engine will last longer then You ! He worked for Shell Oil many years ago . I think He was a Backyard Pitchman ! LOL
John i run amsoil,my engine runs about 10 degrees cooler than harley oil..
Joe Singletary wow no way! 🙄
I run Amsoil 20-50 V-Twin oil in all 3 holes of my 2008 FXSTSSE2 and have for the past 25,000 miles. I also pop the oil return line back to the oil tank and run the engine until clean oil comes out every tine i do an oil change
Are you actually running the engine, or do you pull the plug wires and just turn the engine over?
I fill the oil tank, pop the return like and start it. Run it into a clear container until it’s flowing clean oil. Takes about an extra quart to do a change but it’s well worth it.
Great content as always John, I have a 99 FLHT that I run redline in all holes and change at 2500 being in the high desert of California and road temps over 130 at times it tends to break down quicker.
Just wanted to thank you John for taking the time to post all your tips for keeping my Harley right
Appreciate bro just want to add some before I take it to the shop for a change
I was told by my H-D dealer that they put Redline in all New bikes after the break-in.
So that’s what I have done my changes with. Who knows but I am with you, just make sure it’s got oil. 👍 Hope to make it down to meet up with your group for the trip to Paris this year. 18 Fatboy 124
I’ve run Mobil 1, Harley, Amsoil, and now currently Penns Grade. Change every 3000-5000 miles. Great advise and great common sense John.
John, You didn’t mention anything about the primary cover gasket. Are you replacing it every time you remove the primary cover? Also, thanks for the videos, much appreciated.
Every gasket...gets changed, nothing cleaned or re-used. ALL NEW . mostly 5/8 rubber o-ring.
standard for alot of tranny, engine plugs, the same.
Amsoil FTW!
Convenience for me is also Syn 3. I also change every 3-4K, all 3 holes. Old school thought I know, but it makes me sleep better...
Good video, the proper fluid amount is very important not to very fill
Riding Triumph Bonneville T100. Oil/filter swap out is 3.8 qts of Castrol 10-40 Semi-Synthetic. No worries about gear oil; all the same oil.
Al Sims Al, did you do anything to the timing chain guides on that TC??
In 300k, surely you upgraded the shoe material at least. ???
Did you run 75/90 for 300k in the trans?
Over 35 years , I have told someone "new" at least 10,000 times .
But that changed a bit once they finally took the zinc out .
@@macthemec yes, I always used gear oil.
@@macthemec yes I did.
Valvolane 20w50 syn 4stroke motorcycle oil at Wally’s: never a failure-
$8 quart -
When you want oil go to an “oil” co -
Far cry from hd $13 -
Ahhhh, glad to hear someone make sense.
I put bald eagle sweat in my bikes engine, unicorn tears in the transmission all other fluids i use pegasus pee.... MY BIKE RUNS LIKE A MINOTAUR!

Hahaha finally a truthsayer!! Same with Honda oil or Yamaha oil.
Zackly. 120,000 mi.took top end to Simon's performance. He said no way cylinders had 120,000 mi on them. That is with 15,000 mi ool changes. Save BIG $$ and....TIME. cross hatch still there, no ring land. Carbon scraped off with razor blade.
I agree 👍
Because some sofa-bikers know it better than the engineers.
Amsoil V Twin 20w-50 in engine n primary & Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 in transmission. I didn't like how it shifted with 20w-50.
John, have you or anyone else ever used the Scavenger Total Oil change system and if so, what are your thoughts?
I'm right there with ya. I've used it for years in all my vehicles and bikes. And saved money using Amsoil! Love the product.
Of course I replaced them, but who wants to watch that? Sounds boring. Haha
