“Butt” is the way your base metals are positioned. The two coupons you were spot welding together was a “butt joint”. “Lap” joint would be one BM lapped over another. “T” joint looks like a T. When you were spot welding those two coupons, don’t “zap, zap” the same spot. Try “zaaaaap”. Go with a longer zap. In regards to your settings, check under the door of the welder for a guide for settings based off the thickness of the BMs you’re welding. You can also find some online. When trimming the wire, hold the hollowed side of the cutters against the nozzle. It’ll trim the wire to almost the perfect length. Instead of holding your hands together, try holding closer to the nozzle to keep it more steady. It’ll be a little hotter but, it’ll help your welds. If you’re worried about straightness of your beads, run shorter beads. Work in smaller welding sections and “stitch” them together.
You have to tack the thin metal. It is like spot welding. It’s time consuming, but it will keep things from warping. Then repeat behind each tac after it cools. The metal is too thin for continuous bead. 😅 Then lightly grind your work for paint
I very glad to see that you’re protecting yourself better now. You have clear fair skin, one bad burn can really scar you. It’s frustrating, but rewarding when you get the hang of it. Take care Doris.
You’re already demonstrating one of the fundamentals necessary with welding that most struggle with and that is patience. You’ll be welding the floor pans into your projects soon.
Get a piece of sandstone so you can mark out your welds until you get the hang of it. It marks on metal and doesn't burn off until the welder gets on top of it.
Doris I think you are doing great. Metal working is a completely different art form and it takes time to get the hang of it. I saw that the "stick out" was a little too much, and maybe lower the wire feed speed a little if you are able to. My mig has switches and 5 different speed settings which suck. I have to adjust my travel speed to the machine. Variable speed works wonders. Love your channel and how you aren't afraid to learn anything to get your "babies" fixed up and perfect. ❤
The point is to slow down and adjust your feed of the wire and the power you are working with. The point is to penetrate the metal and you need to build up a pool while it’s hot and continue forward till the end. But you are getting better and trust yourself. Great job 👏 🎉
You're not dropping dimes. When I weld, I try to stitch the sides together. Some people like to make little circles, I like to make little cccc kind of like that. Welding angle iron is a good way to learn to weld.
Is it a bad thing to say I'm proud of you! you're out here taking big steps and learning how to weld and other things. I wanted to learn welding this year but couldn't. Plus you're brave for learning this out in this heat. Give it a month and you can enjoy the cooler weather soon.
If you're having problems seeing your weld hood may be too dark, I would recommend starting at shade 10 and go up if it's too light. Try dragging instead of pushing, pushing is harder to weld when just starting out welding
Great to see your first attempts working OK. When I started i took a 2 day welding class to get me over learning hump. Why don't you reach out to someone like weldcoach to speed up the learning a bit now. Have fun learning to MIG weld overhead :)
Watch for glare coming in behind your welding hood and reflecting off your lense back into your eyes. I had a lot of trouble seeing in the beginning, and once I blocked the light from coming in behind my hood, it helped a lot. Kinda of goes without saying i guess, but when you're starting out, there's a lot going on. Pretty cool vid tho. Keep it up.
Make sure your pant legs go past your boots if slag falls it won’t go into your boot and burn up your ankle trust me it hurts and it keeps burning until you get your boot off
HI doris " BORING "i think everyone will agree welding class with doris was fun and imformative, love watchin the build with these two old school cool motors cant wait to see how they turn out !
Doris, you need to watch the molten puddle. Also get comfortable, with the mig gun hose not pulling on you. Rest your hip or leg against the table, and steady your grip and make a "dry run" of the weld before actually welding. A skinny bead with no penetration is from your travel speed being too fast. A short but wide bead that builds lots of heat fast is from too slow travel speed. Practice running straight beads or make two equal sized coupons and weld them together. Practice makes perfect!
Turn the feed speed down and on thin metal extremely short burst works best😊. Also adjust the heat per gauge of metal it's not a one size fits all😊. Make a continuous c as you go.
You are catching on quite good. So you understand the term "but weld" is the act of welding two peaces of steel that are butted together. Also on thin material you will find it easier when the parts are touching each other. You have the right idea, just practice more. Good luck!
You are doing it right, practicing is the best way to get comfortable and get into a groove with welding, the more you do it the better and comfortable you get the better it will turn out. Just hang in there you will get it.
Hello from Australia 🇦🇺 , the way you are learning to weld is the same as i did 😅 there is nothing wrong with self teaching. You will be a pro in no time 😊 I will offer no suggestions because you will figure it out on your own.
Looks good so far. You need to get a chipping hammer and a wire brush to clean up the weld so you can see it after you done. Also, so the wire feed down until you feel comfortable and can push the puddle. Good Luck. Lots of practice makes perfect.
Check the number on your dark lens. It could be too dark. I personally found #11. Was comfortable for me. #12 was dark enough to watch the solar eclipse.
My sure the shade adjustment on the helmet isn't too dark for the amount of amps your machine is set on, or you won't see shit ! Also they should have magnifiers that slide into the helmet to help you see better. I use a 150 magnifier to see things.
Try welding without the big bulky gloves but use them when you touch the metal. It's a lot harder to weld with gloves on. 18 gauge has to be spot welded together with mig it's too thin and let cool down between welds. It better to use Tig welding on 18 gauge so practice that to.
hey, you are holding the gun a bit far off the metal, get in a little bit closer you will have better gas coverage and better penetration and your gun angle is a bit off, try to let the wire be a bit more straight into the gap, ohh counting helps when spot welding a 3 count is usually good, hope this is helpful..... sorry for being so critical, it"s some of the advice that i got that was helpful, your doing great for a beginner keep it up👍
Couple of variables to look at. You're either too cold (voltage), too fast (movement) or too much wire feed speed. Your beads are roped up and you're not getting enough heat into the weld for it to wet out.
Oh, I just saw the section about doing tacks for the whole weld. That's a type of "stitch" welding. It is MUCH weaker than doing a seam weld. I know it seems easier and better for a beginner, but it really is much better to do a regular seam weld. Especially for something like floor boards. It's ok to stitch the panels to keep them in place but it'll be better in the long run to do continuous welds between the stitches.
Cool welding helmet if its auto darkening your might be able to adjust the darkness so you can see better. Being able to see is the most important part of welding. Practice practice practice you will be great in no time. Finally starting to cool off so when you get to the floorboards it will be better. Your videos are the best.
Groovy helmet and weld boots. Watch your settings you can burn through sheet metal easily and warpage can be an issue but tacking is the way to go before a continuous bead. Where did you get the boots?
Try adjusting the settings on your helmet .... lower the sensitivity ... also learning how to set up your welder is also important as far as your wire speed and heat
Glad you are protecting yourself better can get burnt ve t y bad without the proper protection for you. Practice makes perfect. Good luck Doris glad to see you back. Have missed you only woman I have seen that is not afaird of automobile work.
Don’t worry about having a Harbor Freight welder. They have been stepping up there game with there tools. I love watching the Snap on fan boy cry to justifying spending a lot of money when Icon out performs snap on. And sweetheart. I think you are overprotected. You are doing simple welds. Not building a SpaceX launch tower.
It takes time, and it's not easy. Suggestion find someone that can weld and have them give you some pointers that can help you. There's no shame in a little one on one training, just to give you the fundamentals. Peace ✌️
I fully admit it. Yes i do know how to do a minimal amount Mig welding. But i also admit that im not a fan of welding. I admit it 😊 it hurts when you accidentally arc it on yourself. I leave welding to the Pros. I admit it. You welders are differently made breed. Im not designed for it 😂
Your absolutely right. Its hard to see with all the Personal protection equipment. 😂😂😂 thats another reason im terrible at it. Yes practice makes perfect. But i fully admit that.im not designed to be a welder. Now i dont mind being a Welders helper😂
I enjoy the explanation as from a beginner. It demonstrates the learning process, and steps to improve. But, I'm not buying the premise that no one will come to your shop to weld; Where I live they would be lining up for the chance to help you.
Can't figure out who's voice is worse my wife when she's drunk or listening to you complain and laugh oh wait Harris has you both beat where's my rolling papers
first get comfortable, with your arms hovering over your work piece your accuracy is greatly affected. watch your puddle it will tell you when to move, the puddle never lies. but thin sheet metal you're going to have to dance around the panel to avoid warping, just take your time you got it.

Straight lines have its applications. Try running circles, “V”s or zig zags.
You have to tack the thin metal. It is like spot welding. It’s time consuming, but it will keep things from warping. Then repeat behind each tac after it cools. The metal is too thin for continuous bead. 😅 Then lightly grind your work for paint
Yup.. If you run a continuous bead on those floor panels the will twist badly.
Is it because it gets so hot?
Oh nooooo...
I very glad to see that you’re protecting yourself better now. You have clear fair skin, one bad burn can really scar you. It’s frustrating, but rewarding when you get the hang of it. Take care Doris.

I think you did fine. In time you get the hang of it but at least your having fun. That's what is more important.
You're not dropping dimes. When I weld, I try to stitch the sides together. Some people like to make little circles, I like to make little cccc kind of like that. Welding angle iron is a good way to learn to weld.

Freaking Wedling sounds like so much more fun than just Welding!❤️
Like other commenters- heat control on sheet metal welding is the key to a good fit.
If you're having problems seeing your weld hood may be too dark, I would recommend starting at shade 10 and go up if it's too light. Try dragging instead of pushing, pushing is harder to weld when just starting out welding
You rock Doris . I have always wanted to learn how to weld too

I applaud you learning new skills. Keep at it!
Priceless
Nice job Doris , perfect practice makes perfect. I know you will get this. It is a shame no one will come to your shop to supervise or do the work

HI doris " BORING "i think everyone will agree welding class with doris was fun and imformative, love watchin the build with these two old school cool motors cant wait to see how they turn out !
Spot welding is not cheating 😎😎 Just keep on going, it will come to you.

I want to learn to weld but I’m going to learn in the winter lmao
I buy a lot of things from Harbor Freight too, for my shop. High-quality products with a great warranty. (As if a warranty is needed.)
YOU CAN CHANGE THE SETTINGS TO ADJUST THE FEED SPEED AND THE ARC POWER FOR THINNER METALS. ALSO THE VISOR SHOULD ALSO HAVE ADJUSTMENTS.
Doris you did great congrats just a little more practice you're getting there 🥰
Check the number on your dark lens. It could be too dark. I personally found #11. Was comfortable for me. #12 was dark enough to watch the solar eclipse.
Hi Doris I'm Vaughan from Australia practise makes perfect keep up the great videos keep smiling 😃

I think they say grinder and paint makes me a welder i ain't ? 🤣
Doris, you rock! Keep practicing. ❤ Peace
Sweet welding machine. 😎🤘. Welding is fun
Use a chalk to guide you with making a stright line, stick out should be about 1/8" ..... you got this Babe!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wonderwoman ❤
Practice weaving it and don't hold your breath...

I love your helmet, very cool
Great job 👍
Practice, practice, practice makes perfect because not everyone is a natural talent😊.
7:25 get some cheap readers. I always have a few sets in the garage.
Get into a comfortable position and be patient, you’re doing well by adjusting all of the parameters to suit your style.
I never complain of what you wear! 💙
When you're putting in floor pans you're doing more attacking than welding because you don't want to warp the pan when you get it too hot
Glad you are protecting yourself better can get burnt ve t y bad without the proper protection for you. Practice makes perfect. Good luck Doris glad to see you back. Have missed you only woman I have seen that is not afaird of automobile work.
Working progress
You work Good and you have truck very well congratulations ❤🎉🎉🎉
Try to put your elbow on something that way your not floating around. It makes it easier for straight lines.
your gaining xp once yo rank up a couple levels it will be easy as hell to you. Hands on experience is the best.
You need to keep the gas cup about a 1/4" from your work piece.
Keep going you get 😮
I'm a mechanic, too, but i stutter. Never had much luck with women. And watching women like you on UA-cam makes me feel so bad.
Una mujer soldadora tiene estilo a 2pac
Remember your wire feed speed is totally adjustable so play with your machine

You are doing a excellent job Doris what do you think about the new Mustang Dark horse have a good weekend ❤
Ms Doris you even look so beautiful 🤩 in PPE safety gear ❤❤❤❤💯💯💯💯🏁🏁🏁🏁🔥🔥🔥🔥
Like 427😮!!! Welcome to my thirty years job
excelente,parabens.
Was the Porsche or the Lambo a good car. Which one was it.
Wow you are hotter than a $2 pistol good luck with the welding keep up the good work and stay on the upside

😂😂😂 practice practice
❤❤❤
It looks like your sheild gas is a little low, you shouldn't have them black spots where you have welded.
I recommend getting a certified welder to work on your cars

Plus at least a round neck tshirt to protect your upper chest and lower neck. Tan lines can be sexy but this isn't gonna do it
