Frickin’ enginerds... You’ll know that a light isn’t working because it doesn’t turn on when you turn it on! I understand that you can’t help it, after sailing with a number of engineers, but I’ll never be able to understand the tendency towards numbers/software/readings/graphs/etc. when your own observations of heel/temp/sail trim/lights/etc. can be just as faithful and educational, if not more so. Note, I believe this my first curmudgeon sailor comment... lol, only down hill from here. On a positive note, thank you for producing these videos: you do beautiful work!
Agree, the varnished, warm look is much better than the "hospital" white everywhere. Things are really shaping up and looking great! Hope the freezer isn't "frozen" somewhere, those non-return phone calls aren't a good sign.
The love cave, AKA the V-berth will be much warmer and homey with more brightwork. Bright bed linens and plenty of LED downlighting will make it comfy and esthetically pleasing. You are getting so close to being able to move in. I bet the sharks are starting to circle around Obylix with an anticipated for sale listing coming soon.

Love the work you are doing! You might want to covering the electrical equipment in the forward hanging locker with clear plexiglass. Someone will throw some wet gear in there causing issues and the constant rocking of the boat will cause the hanging clothes to wear against your wiring.
It was great seeing Ava again. I like her long hair and she looks lovely. The varnish really makes the forward cabin look like a stately room. If the overhead is painted white it will make the cabin a very comfy feeling area to relax and just hang out. Thank you Mads and Ava for this weeks video. Take care and stay well.

In the clothing locker, I would add plexiglass covers for the entire setup. Moving clothing in and out may snag on something that you don't want it to. Two sheets of plexi would prevent a lot of headachs.

Another thing I learned from you is there is nothing you can't fix on a fiberglass boat. Athena is going to be the most sea worthy updated boat cruising when you are done. In case it helps anyone, here's an old trick with varnish that's usually most helpful with brightwork on deck but can be used on interiors; You can paint over cured varnish that has been properly prepped. Keep in mind the varnish has to be well cured, so that can mean a few to weeks to maybe 2 months since some varnishes take a long time to harden. People who have lots of beautiful brightwork on deck but plan to sail in the tropics will dread the gobs of UV that will slowly destroy the varnish will like this. The idea is that an opaque paint (usually white) will defend the surface layers of varnish, but because the grain has been sealed by multiple coats you won't get pigment staining into the wood fibers. So down the road its quite easy to remove the paint with a heat gun and then revarnish the bright work. Sounds like a lot of extra work, but trust me when I say it is WAY less work than sanding down UV split varnish to bare wood and starting from scratch. So on interiors you can varnish to seal it fresh, or if you have old varnish you really don't have to remove all of it to bare wood. The prep is the same as you would expect on any job, sand with 220 to scuff the surface, remove dust and tack cloth, then roll primer. This is a great choice if you are on the fence about painting something that was traditionally varnished but worried you might change your mind (or that a potential buyer will hate it).
For the in between layers of varnish, I have had great luck with using steel wool in the past. It will remove any fuzzies and make a nice matte surface for the next layer to bite into. A big big advantage of steel wool is also that it doesn't clog up like fine sandpaper.
Digital switching is excellent for simplifying wiring and reducing the amount of wire on the boat. It is also nice for timed activity such as turning on running lights at night if AIS is enabled; and if AIS is off turning on the anchor light. Meanwhile for something like pumps, it will let you know how often and how long they run.
Hey Mads, your command of English, including idioms, is really amazing. Here's a small thing though - when you say "plucking away" the actual idiom is "plugging away". Keep up the good work!
When I was watching the end of the video, I was noticing the proximity of the cooktop to the VHF radio. I see the cover on it and thought that's definitely a good idea to keep it safe from steam and oil. I'm thinking that a tempered glass splatter shield on top of the nav desk back would be a good addition. You could get it custom engraved too with a nice design. Maybe tall enough to protect the radio face. Would also keep oil splatter from landing on the whatever is on the desk surface too. No one wants oily charts. That's an easy project while you wait for the freezer.
A lot of tech stuff going on..its great...but I always fall back to keep it simple.....but its nice to see it in actual action...just worry about lightning and such...very nice work on the forward cabin, like the stain better then paint. Thanks for the video...John

@@br14nvg1 Yes -Fully. :) A lightning strike to the mast could easily 100% melt that board. making the built-in bypass jumpers useless! Have a small bag of premade bypass cable labeled with connectors already terminated could make keep a bad situation from becoming an emergency.

When you get to doing the floor, you might want to look into flexible luxury vinyl plank flooring. We just did our boat with it. As it is flexible and waterproof, it was the perfect match. So easy to bend it (once heated by leaving in the sun in the cockpit) to match the curves of the hull. You can always add a rug over it in the salon. Love watching your videos!
Very nice work. The digital switching is fascinating especially as you can create logic conditions. Something as simple as automatically changing lights when under power or sail to something more complicated.
Ava is looking really cute with her hair longer. That has nothing to do with the boat, but it is something I noticed as a hairstylist. I also like the V-berth being varnished. The white looks amazing on the rest of the boat, but the varnish looks really warm and inviting.
@Mads I have a similar space for home automation.. Consider a emergency battery powered light (standalone charge from boat) in case of technical disasters it will always be dark en the lights will not work to fix the simple issue at hand.. They gremlins seem to miraculously disappear when you install said light..

Four spacers and a sheet of clear Lexan will frugally 'short proof' your buss bars without making the present set-up obsolete. The Lexan panel can cover just the two bars, or the entire installation, keeping clothing from snagging or restricting air flow over the components.
I am in the middle of a refit of a much smaller boat and have been planning on using Czone controllers. In fact I have some on order to play with while it is winter, though I am far from ready to put them in. Seeing yours in action has cemented my choice. Learning lots from watching you. Thanks for taking the extra time to not only do, but film while doing.
I hope i have a little right to "yammering" before "glorious sanding" For long time follower of your videos (i believe over 5 years) i really miss your 5-10mins long but full of informative contents. when i am about to click your videos (nowadays) i know (roughly) first there will be 1min long throwbacks + 3mins long some plans + 3 mins long something planned but not happened because of something + at least 2 mins long what you planed for next week + maybe if i am lucky 3-5 mins real DIY content. This week, what you have done with czone & digital switching and interaction with garmin interface is mind opening, entertaining, extremely pleasant subject for me. It's also not consumed subject from sailing video channels. Tons of small details you can share and transfer to us. This is where Sail Life shine. But what i get is limited with 4 mins max shallow informative content. I normally don't comment on videos or read comments on youtube. Both of your projects Obelix and Athena are important for me. I want to see how they finish and how they sail away. But this content creating concept lost me year ago. It is lacking sailing entertainment (as you can assume from other sailing channels) and it never sell itself as sailing magazine. But it defines itself as "DIY Fun" which is getting shallower technically every week. First i met with your channel your contents were small portion of "homemade" meal. Full of aroma, honesty, effort. Delicious. Room for dreaming and learning. For awhile it tastes produced fast food for me and competition is over saturated for this type. I hope you get my message as honest longterm viewer review. I know i will watch all your journey until Athena sail away. But the experiences that i am getting from the journey almost lost. With appreciation and acknowledgement that you are trying to create every week and with best wishes in your journey.
I have to agree. Those thoughts hit me about three months ago. I guess if I could kick in a few bucks a month, I'd have a a stronger platform to stand on. But I'm a disabled veteran on a pension and there just isn't any room in the budget. Perhaps I can appeal to the Mads of two or three years ago. 5 years, nonstop, is a long time to put you heart and soul into such demanding and outstanding work. Electronic switching looks great - cable on the basis that it will be expanded, an additional box can extend existing switching - the sky's the limit, i.e. red night light in the nav. station, then the galley, then the cockpit and so on, all remotely controllable from existing switching, it's wonderfully flexible. Fingers crossed for the freezer. Great to see Eva. Right choice for the varnish, although a mix of paint and varnish does look good.

Smart move going with a satin finish over the gloss, gloss shows off any imperfections and just looks...too glossy! For a final finish I would suggest to rub it with #0000 steel wool with a wax lubricant, it will get rid of virtually all brush marks and feels so smooth, it's wonderful to touch. You're doing great!👍☺
Epethanes singlepak varnish can be used doing about 3 or 4 coats wet over tacky in a day, it takes a little while to get a full cure on it but so long as your gental with it for a week or so it's fine. If you want to get a high build in a single day epethanes make a 2 pak pu varnish that cures super fast.
Oh it was so nice to see Ava again. It has been a while. I can only imagine how much Mads must miss her. Counting down the days. It should be cameras off for a week while they get "reacquainted".

Except use bronze wool on a boat. Not steel and no rust bits.

Digital switching to old school varnishing! I still love varnished wood, as long as I don’t have to maintain it.
Epethanes singlepak varnish can be used doing about 3 or 4 coats wet over tacky in a day, it takes a little while to get a full cure on it but so long as your gental with it for a week or so it's fine. If you want to get a high build in a single day epethanes make a 2 pak pu varnish that cures super fast.
