  • Good old Obelix needs a bit of cleaning before being ready for sale. In this video, I scrape the bottom, polish the topsides and apply fresh bottom paint. Aboard Athena, I install more czone digital switching boxes and get an annoying surprise.

Hi. I usually do not write any comments on the videos I watch in You tube, but I have taken the time to write to you because I believe you are amazing. I have been watching all of your videos since you started your refit on Athena and it wasn't until today that I finally caught up with the weekly videos. I have learned a lot and you have motivated me to finish all the small jobs on my boat. You're ingenuity, your preciseness, your constant attention to details, your pursuit of making everything just perfect and not just doing okay have made love your videos. There are not too many people that actually read the instructions, follow the manufacturer instruction, nor take the time to contact them for further instructions and ways to do it, and you are one of them. I can mention hundreds of times I was amazed of the attentions to details that you had in doing something in Athena, but the list would be too long. Before I go, I wish you all the best, and thank you, thank you, thank you, for inspiring hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Hope to meet you one day if you ever go to the Caribbean.

I have found the extent to which Mads just "keeps on keeping on" is stellar. I quit complaining altogether about the amount of work I have yet to finish on my cargo trailer conversion. I am humbled by Mads actually finishing everything on his list. My list? Not so much.

LEDs can have a low buzz when installed with a dimmer, if you connect them directly with just a on/off switch , the buzz disappears. That's why you maybe did not notice it while testing.

You may be able to defeat that with a simple filter. A capacitor/resistor pair tuned to cut the buzz frequency. Most dimmers are putting out a simple square wave that varies in total time on. All you need do is trim off the sharp edges of the on a bit. But the ones Mads has may make a little pop when they turn on regardless. But it is a cheap solution worth a try.

One lightning strike and all that digital doo-dad could be fried. Then, no lights, no joy. There's much to be said for simplicity, especially for simple (binary) things.
So I would (unsolicited) recommend some backup LED's etc, wired the ould fashioned way - to a battery through a toggle switch :)
Absolutely lovely work overall! You are an inspiration!!

You may be able to put some kind of noise filter on the line feeding the lights. You would need to find out the frequency of the noise and someone could easily make a filter with some simple electronics. If you have a trade school with an electronics dept., one of their students could probably build something as a class project. I went to school for electronics but it has been many decades.

I believe putting a capacitor in the circuit will eliminate the hum. Below is correct, dimmer LEDs must be installed to avoid hum. They have some sort of capacitor installed that stops the humm. Odds are you are not going to hear the hum while traveling and I doubt you will hear them over the ocean.

Mads- Your LED problem is likely NOT the LED but the type of dimming. Dimming can be done with a Pulse Width Dimmer or analog. PWDs dim buy turning LEDs on/off rapidly and are cheaper and the voltage clipping sounds like a hum so my guess is you have a PWD. Do some research for a good analog dimmer. These reduce current to reduce to the LED. Dean PS- Love your channel- an inspiration for me doing a major refit on an Orion 27,

The dimming is accomplished with something called pulse width modulation or PWM. If the PWM is a harmonic frequency, then you can hear it. If the controller is robust enough, this may be configurable.
Check the setting and see if there is an option to change the PWM frequency. Higher frequency will hum less. You can tell if it is the PWM frequency by powering one light directly and seeing if it hums.

    • @guy.h

hmmm, yes & no - the humming will be from the regulators on the LEDs themselves as it seems to be there when they are at full brightness.
I would hope that Garmin will have taken a little more care over their rfi (and afi) than the LED manufacturers.
P.S. harmonics are multiple of the fundamental frequency, so the humming will unlikely be a harmonic, but the fundamental frequency of the on-board regulators on the LED modules
Harmonics from LEDs or other switching transformers or power regulators etc *can* cause rfi which can knock out AIS & GPS receivers

    • @technicholy1299
      @technicholy1299 3 роки тому +1

@@guy.h Full brightness may just mean a duty cycle above 80%. I'm not very impressed with the garmin system for the price point. Also, his lights are not factory LED. He changed the bulbs for drop in replacements. Those don't have any regulators, they just add bulbs in series on the board until the hit the voltage drop they want.

Adding my two cents to the million comments here about humming LED's when dimming: We had an LED circuit that only started humming when all the bulbs were in. One bulb: quiet, smooth dimming; multiple bulbs: humming, flickering mayhem. We found and LED that was compatible with the dimmer and problem solved, but in other areas we skipped the smart switches due to compatability woes.
Not sure how smart your smart switches are, but is there a "play dumb" setting? In other words: only full on or off, no gradual dimming, always pulsing nonsense. As others have suggested. One simple solution is a filter in line with the LED's, or make your own with a capacitor/inductor.
    Good luck, and nice work.

I have actually found (from the personal experience of cleaning a bronze prop that had been submerged for years and was totally encrusted with barnacles and other shellfish) that plain old white vinegar did just as good a job as Hydrochloric acid, and was MUCH safer to use. (not to mention really cheap!) worth considering for the future.

OMG Mads, you don’t go for the KISS way of running your boat😳😳

You might want to consider a manual override for your old I interior and exterior lights in case of emergency where your digital switching doesn't work

Having sold three pocket cruisers and now owning a fourth, when they get all cleaned and detailed you get second thoughts on selling them... haha, but I did! Mads, Obelix looks terrifically spiffy!!! ⛵😁

The hum may be coming from the LEDs but it's really caused by the dimmer. It must be doing Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) at an audible frequency. I'd hope for what you probably paid for the dimmer they'd use DC dimming but apparently not. You could stick a sufficiently large capacitor on the output of the dimmer to eliminate the effect and also prevent flickering on-camera.

I couldn't say it any better myself ... Obelix does look pretty dang spiffy, especially being 50 years old!

The software engineer in me is geeking out on the electronics setup. The sailor in me is thinking, one lightening strike (or near strike) and KABAM! … all is toast.

The humming is either bad ballast on the light, bad grounding in the circuit (only takes one) somewhere, or wires crossing over a higher voltage and not enough insulation on the thinner, led wire.

Wow fancy having to go to all the effort of finding and then pressing the remote button when returning. Surely a gps fence can be setup so your phone location can trigger lights on? Totally hands free, although remembering to keep the phone charged may be a pain.

LEDs hum when they're on a dimmer circuit. You don't have to search for another LED, you have to find a better dimmer, or, perform some EEV magic, and use a hard stepped dimmer (i'm not sure that's what they're called) essentially, something that steps the voltage with physical preset levels. It's a bit bigger than the cheap or super expensive variants, but it's used for stuff like that.
Two other things: 1. unless you were on dimmer switch when you tested them, that's why you didn't hear them. 2. are those LEDs rated for dimmer applications?

Do the LEDs hum when run directly off the battery? Could be due to the digital switching using a pwm controller for the dimming?

I was thinking the same thing. His test were probably done on the 12v battery and now that they are on a pwm circuit, let the humming begin.

That’s a seriously impressive electronics suite you are installing Madz and if nothing else you may have secured a future consulting income stream, should you ever sell Athena.
Obelix is absolutely transformed both inside and out, impressively quick work by you (and Mum & Dad) and whoever buys it is going to acquire a very sound vessel indeed. Above all, they will know how to turn the lights on and off.😉
Keep up the spiffingly good work.😀👍⛵️

Well at least the guy looking at oblix won't want you to haul her out to see the bottom. Also a good time to get a survey if he wants one.

It's not common to get surveys on smaller boats here :) I told him about the only real weakness I know about with the Albin Ballads (mast step truss). He had already read about that online and he had a long list of questions :) It felt like he had done his homework! I think he'll take good care of Obelix if he ends up buying her. He's coming back again later this week to see the interior.

It could be that you did test your LED's there could be multiple reasons for them to hum like they are happy to be aboard :) Another reason could be that they are part of a different inferior batch. Not a thing you can do about either however one major variable you can check is the installation the cable run and the power supply is certainly different from when you tested them. Obviously you do not want to spend a lot of time/money on this problem. But dismount one of the installed ones just hook it up to a battery or however you first tested it.
If it still hums well back to the drawing board if not than maybe some sort of voltage regulator or some way to clean up your power supply would do it.
